JOHN’S LUTHERAN CHURCH “The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:11). When a candidate is ordained into the Ministry of Word and Sacrament in the ELCA, as our new Pastor of Faith Connections Ladd Sonnenberg was several weeks ago, the presiding bishop asks the candidate to answer a series of questions. •Will you assume this office, believing that the church’s call is God’s call to the ministry of word and sacrament? •Will you preach and teach in accordance with the holy scriptures and the creeds and the Lutheran confessions? •Will you be diligent in your study of the holy scriptures and faithful in your use of the means of grace? •Will you pray for God’s people, nourish them with the word and sacraments, and lead them by your own example in faithful service and holy living? •Will you give faithful witness in the world, that God’s love may be known in all that you do? And, in response to each of these questions, the candidate answers, “I will, and I ask God to help me.” It is a moving and powerful thing to witness a candidate, after years of diligent preparation and faithful study, respond to God’s call and publicly make these promises to be a servant in Christ’s church, acknowledging that it is only with God’s help that ministry is possible. How blessed we are here at St. John’s to welcome Pastor Sonnenberg and his wife Sara as they begin their ministry with us! As I have gotten to know Pastor Sonnenberg over these past several months, it has been most evident to me that Pastor Sonnenberg has a deep passion and enthusiasm for sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ both with God’s people and in the world. In addition to fully sharing in the ministries of preaching, teaching, and pastoral care, as Pastor of Faith Connections, Pastor Sonnenberg will work specifically to connect us with Christ, with each other, and with the world through Small Groups, Spiritual Gifts, Children and Family Ministries, Youth and Young Adult Ministries, Social Ministry, Evangelism, and Fellowship. I look forward to working with him as he challenges our congregation in new ways of being and making disciples of Christ, in response to God’s grace! Forty years ago, another candidate for ordained ministry made those very same promises and for the last 13 years has faithfully served as Lead Pastor here at St. John’s, Pastor Paul Olson. As we celebrate his 40 years of faithful ministry to Christ and Christ’s church and as we prepare to say goodbye to Pastor Olson and Evelyn upon his retirement, it is important for me to share with you what a privilege it has been sharing in ministry with him these past four years. Pastor Olson’s faithfulness, servant leadership, and tireless commitment to the work of Christ’s church have been an incredible witness to me as I have watched Christ at work in and through him. As I reflect on Pastor Olson’s ministry here at St. John’s, there is a single word that that stands out for me as a description of his ministry – steward. A steward is someone who cares for that which has been entrusted to him. In his ministry of Word and Sacrament here at St. John’s, Pastor Olson has been a most faithful steward of the many gifts entrusted to him, taking faithful care of this congregation’s members, taking faithful care of this congregation’s finances, taking faithful care of this congregation’s facilities, taking faithful care of this congregation’s mission and ministry. In thinking of Pastor Olson’s ministry of stewardship, I am reminded of Jesus’ parable of the talents in Matthew 25 in which the master says to the servant who faithfully used the gifts that were entrusted to him, “Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master” (25:23). Continued from page 1...Pastor Olson, you have been a most trustworthy servant of the gifts God entrusted you with here at St. John’s. More than anything else, you have taught me by your most gracious example that the best kind of ministry is shared ministry – a ministry that you have generously shared with me, with the staff, with the disciples of Jesus here at St. John’s, with LSSI and Augustana College, and with the world. Pastor Olson – I give thanks for you and for the ministry in which we have shared! And, Pastor Sonnenberg – I give thanks for you, as well, and for the shared ministry we are about to begin together! With God’s help, we will continue to live out the mission God has entrusted to our care - to be and make disciples of Christ, in response to God’s grace! Thanks be to God!

You can also bring coats of any size and shoes and handbags. Jeans of all sizes are always needed also. What not to send: no night clothes, no nylons or anything suggestive. Please remove all sharp objects from clothing. Thanks in advance for all you do. Extreme School Makeover SpringfieldSharefest,a team of Springfield-area individuals, businesses and organizations, is bringing help and hope to Harvard Park Elementary School July 30 - August 7. Imagine going to school every day in a building that’s 100 years old. Paint is chipping, carpets are grungy, and lights have dimmed because they are dated and dirty. Bathrooms are doubling as closets due to lack of storage space. Age-appropriate playground equipment is absent. Does this inspire excellence? Is this an optimal learning environment? Likely not. Together, as a community, we can catalyze change, if we’re willing to roll up our sleeves and take action! Contact SpringfieldSharefest to register or donate. Phone: 217-793-2800Email: [email protected] Web: www.springfieldsharefest.org

Books For Harvard ParkHarvard Park Elementary would like to begin a summer project to put books into the hands of their students. Many of these children do not have books at home, or easy access to books. The school is asking for donations of “gently used” children’s books for their “bookmobile” project. St. John’s Sunday school children have already collected over 400 books! Please bring your donations to church during the month of May. Any

children’s books pre-K through young adult that are in good condition, will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help.

Eagle Going Green! We are currently in the process of creating an electronic link to the Eagle. If you choose to receive the Eagle electronically instead of through the mail, each time the Eagle is published, an e-mail will be sent to your e-mail address. Click on the link and you will be connected to the Eagle and to St. John’s web site. During the month of May, we will be collecting e-mail addresses.

Sign up on the church website at http://www.stjohns-springfield.org/#/events/online-event-registration

Thank you for helping us Go Green (save a tree by decreasing the amount of paper we use) and decrease the $10,000.00 annual cost for printing and mailing the Eagle.

Thank You NoteWe just want to thank the congregation for all the wonderful support you give the Social Ministry Committee with all the projects that come up. We are always overwhelmed by your generosity. The Mother’s Day Bags for M.E.R.C.Y. House mothers were filled with wonderful goodies. This is just one of the many projects you support during the year and we can’t seem to thank you enough. Once again thanks in God’s Love. Your social ministry committee.

A Note of Thanks! The May 6 Middle School Dance for Diabetes held in St. John’s gym was a tremendous success! More than 150 kids and adults participated in the event, which featured DJ “Spud,” an incredible dance mix, and free blood sugar screenings. Dancers from Lincoln Magnet School and a number of area middle schools helped raise $710 for Noah Schlosser’s “Beta Cells” biking team. The “Beta Cells” are in 1st place for funds raised among teams entered in Springfield’s Tour de Cure on May 21. Noah is now in 3rd place for individual fund-raisers, having raised more than $2500 for diabetes research, education and advocacy. Thank you to the family of St. John’s for supporting this worthwhile cause!

ELCA Disaster Response Severe storms have caused major damage in many parts of the United States this spring. In areas of Minnesota and North Dakota, overland flooding of farm fields and rural roads has exceeded past records.Elsewhere, particularly across the south, tornadoes and heavy rain have devastated a number of communities. But in this Easter season, we are reminded of hope and new life. It is with this hope that the ELCA leans forward in response to disaster affected places, helping our sisters and brothers in need. ELCA DisasterResponse is supporting communities overwhelmed by rising waters and leveled by destructive winds. Our church is reaching out to the survivors of these devastating storms and assessing the needs—working together for as long as it takes.

Your help is needed today to bring immediate relief and ongoing support to communities affected by these disasters. Gifts designated to “U.S. Floods” or “U.S. Tornadoes” will be used in full—100 percent—to help disaster survivors clean-up, rebuild and recover. Donations given to the undesignated fund help to respond immediately and effectively where it is needed most. Because of your generous offerings of prayer and financial support, the ELCA walks alongside disaster survivors on their long road to recovery. Thank you!

You can use your Special Offering envelope or a pew envelope and simply designate it as “Disaster Relief.” Thanks for helping those in our country who need our support, prayer and financial gifts.
