It’s Time to Finish Strong!

With our calendars having turned to May, we will be stressing the importance of Finishing Strong at school. It is a concept that I write and talk about every year around this time because of the increase in potential distractions (e.g., many special events, looking ahead to transitions, etc.) from the habits and hard work we’ve been engaged in all year. Just as any athletic contest requires a strong push until the very end, this is the time of year when we all need to sustain our energy, determination, and focus on the present. So while we’ve been dedicated to our school-wide guidelines for success all year – Be Safe, Be Kind & Give Your Best Effort – it is now up to everyone to focus on these to an even greater extent.

As a staff, Finishing Strong means continuing to keep our expectations high for learning and behavior (in many cases, viewing this time of year as needing as much structure, explicit communication, etc. as during the first month of school). Teachers will also be reflecting on the extent to which they have achieved goals for individual students thus far, as well as their collaborative team goals, and making the most of the time we have remaining to further that progress.

At home, you can encourage Finishing Strong through a continued (or renewed) commitment to positive routines related to nightly reading and homework completion, schedule planning, healthy diet, hygiene, adequate sleep, and prompt arrival to school each day. With the (finally!) improved weather, the time is ripe to recommit to limited screen time (see https://www.commonsensemedia.org/screen- time for some very helpful resources for families). Look for moments when you can slow things down and be fully present with your child(ren). In other words, this final “push” need not be anything intense, just a rededicated focus on simple but important things that foster a child’s well being – and your own!

There are many opportunities for celebration to come in the next few weeks, representing much hard work, including our Second Grade Program (May 23), Open House (May 24), Field Day (June 1) and more. We are looking forward to a rewarding and focused finish to our school year. We hope to see you at Lyon soon!

Kevin Dorken Lyon School Principal

Happy May!

Given that we are about to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, I would like to recognize the amazing staff at Pleasant Ridge. Every day I’m reminded of how special they are. I feel fortunate to work with such dedicated people and professionals who care about children and give so much of their time and energy to improve the lives of our young students.

This is my 17th year working in a school, and the job of ‘Teacher’ has evolved much in that time. Every year it seems that teachers are being asked to do more and more and handle more and more. Yet, the teachers at Pleasant Ridge do this with grace and keep students at the forefront of all they do. I’m constantly amazed at their attention to detail and the passion they have for working with children and helping them along their journey. It is an honor to work with the staff at Pleasant Ridge and I hope you join me in sharing my appreciation for all they do.

During the week of May 7th, I invite you to share your appreciation with our staff. Please let them know how much you appreciate their efforts and the time they put into supporting our students.

On another note, I’m looking forward to the month of May and all the special moments that are on the calendar. From culminating musical assemblies (Chorus, Band, Orchestra), class celebrations, and special goodbyes for our 5th Grade class, there will be lots for us to celebrate together. Thank you to our staff and parents who have been planning these special events and celebrations, I know they will be fond memories for our students.

PTA News and Notes by Sharon Bux, PTA President

Wow! Where did the school year go? If your child hasn’t already informed you, we have just over twenty days of school left until summer break. Thankfully, the fun is not over yet! We have several exciting PTA events happening between now and the end of the school year.

Staff Appreciation Week begins Monday, May 7th. Our chairs Andrea Miller, Katie Chasen and Erika Sullivan have been hard at work planning a fun week for our teachers who will be treated to gift card raffles, lunches, snacks, wellness and good wishes all week long. Thank you to the many parent volunteers who assist in making this week happen.

Our last PTA meeting is Tuesday, May 15th at 9:15 am at Pleasant Ridge. Join us for our guest speakers Dr. Dane Delli for his year in review and future outlook. In addition, Toby Pleszkun and Esther Storrie will discuss ways to prevent the summer slide. Following the meeting, please join us to set-up for the Spring Book Fair and for our Volunteer Thank You Lunch. All are welcome!

Tax-Free Spring Book Fair and Literature Alive are Wednesday, May 16th and Thursday, May 17th at Pleasant Ridge. Book Fair Chair, Tara Call, Literature Alive Chair, Holly Higgins, and PR Librarian, Esther Storrie, have been very busy planning for this year’s event. There will be food trucks and fun literary stations. It is a great time to stock up on summer reading and a nice opportunity for incoming 3rd graders to check out their new school! Plus, your purchases are tax-free.

Fifth Grade Picnic will be held on Thursday, May 31st from 8am-2pm at Cole Park. Chairs Shari Isaacs and Kelly Blair have been busy planning a fun, memorable day for our graduating 5th graders

As we head into the home stretch, a big thank you to the PTA volunteers who made some special things happen recently: Environmental Chairs Laura Lane and Marney Schager handed out bookmarks and sunflower seeds during Earth Week! The Troops Project Chairs Kara Kline, Kristi Mariani and Kathleen McNeela along with the LY/PR families donated 100 boxes of care packages that will be sent to a member of our military currently deployed overseas to show our gratitude.

The PTA is still looking for a few more Board Members to serve next year. Please email Anne O’Neill at [email protected] for more information. Thank you to the wonderful staff and parents who have supported the PTA this past year through volunteering, book fair purchases, Annual Benefit attendance, spiritwear purchases, staff appreciation contributions, and more…. Your support has enabled us to enrich our children’s educational experience this past year through assemblies, print subscriptions, International Night, art enrichment, before and after school programs and over $18,000 in grants.
