organization that combines movement instruction

with medical and educational expertise, creating

new techniques to teach children with disabilities

and enhance their quality of life.

Foundation ...a Champion for Children with Disabilities

Allegro teaches more than 700 children with

intellectual disabilities, Down syndrome, orthopedic

challenges (wheelchairs and walkers), spina bifida,

autism, cerebral palsy, learning disabilities, muscular

dystrophy, visual and hearing impairments, children

“at-risk”, and children with cancer in FREE classes

every week! Allegro Foundation does not

discriminate against any type of disability!

When Damian first joined Allegro’s preschool program for children at risk with unidentified disabilities, he adamantly refused to engage with Allegro instructors. When pressed at his initial assessment, Damian broke down in tears, pushed the letters poster out of the instructor’s hands, and ran to the other side of the gym in a flurry of frustration and anger. Like many at risk four-year-old children, Damian had never been taught to recognize letters, numbers, shapes, and colors, so when tasked with this naming each during the assessment, he broke down. Through persistent instruction and enduring patience, Damian received the educational support that he needs to thrive in elementary school by pairing academic concepts (letters, numbers, and counting) with movement patterns to activate neural pathways that result in long-term memory. When Damian first joined Allegro, he would not identify any letters, numbers, or body parts, but by learning

the letter “S” through shaping his body into the form of an S, slithering like a snake, and sounding out the letter repeatedly in a meaningful learning activity, Allegro Foundation was able to teach Damian vital pre-literacy skills. At the completion of 26 weeks in Allegro’s classes, Damian obtained perfect scores on letter recognition and phonological processing as measured by the PF Scale.

Allegro Foundation is here to offer our help through our FREE Movement Education classes for children living with disabilities.

Through Allegro, I have the opportunity to impact the lives of our community’s precious children. Allegro is physically, mentally, and emotionally influencing the lives of the children we teach every week. So often you find that the students you are trying to inspire are the ones that end up inspiring you. My passion has always been to teach children living with disabilities and my spirit is renewed each time I step into the classroom with the Allegro students!

Skarleth Maradiaga and Emily Teves as

our 2016 Volunteers of the Year!

The passion Skarleth and Emily display in

working with Allegro students and in the

office show their willingness to go above and

beyond the volunteer requirements. Skarleth

is a wonderful volunteer to our students and

works extra hard to make them feel special in

class. Emily is an amazing office volunteer

and donates her time assisting staff and

completing office duties. In addition to

volunteering in the class and in the office

both volunteers have been a buddy to the

students in presentations. Allegro is so

blessed to have Skarleth and Emily serve as

volunteers and we wish them well as they

graduate high school and continue on to

college!
