2014 MCOA Board President

For the newer Members of Moss Creek who are asking, “Is winter al-ways this cold?” I can’t remember a January with so many days below freezing. We can only hope we will see glimpses of an early spring in February. The most frequently asked question of Board Members is “When will the outfall structure at Pond #1 along Moss Creek Drive be repaired?” The holidays at the end of December likely added a week or two to the process as the response time was delayed at every step which in-cluded obtaining bids from three contractors, securing OCRM and Beaufort County permits, and ordering a custom made pipe which con-trols the outflow. The pipe and other materials are scheduled to be de-livered next week and depending on tides, JS Construction will begin the outfall structure repair in the next few weeks. During the day, traffic will be rerouted through Stable Gate. Please drive slowly as the road has several blind spots for residents who need to back out of their driveways. The detour will be marked both at Stable Gate and Timber Lane. In 2013 MCOA was paid $1,445,500 for 84 certificates from the sales of homes, villas, and lots which represents the highest certificate in-come since 2005. For the last three years the total sales have been 72 (2011), 64 (2012) and 84 (2013). The other good news is that in 2012 there was only one home sale above $600,000 in Moss Creek. In 2013 there were 15 home sales above $600,000, a very positive trend that the market is improving and the Vision, Mission, and Brand of Moss Creek has appeal to current home buyers. MCOA finished the year with revenues slightly ahead of budget and expenses continued below budget for an operating surplus of $417,082. The yearend audited fi-nancial results will be released in advance of the Annual Members’ Meeting in April. At the recent January Board Meeting the Board Orientation program was conducted by Phil Newman of McGladrey, a large private club accounting firm and consultants. Newman’s presentation reviewed board governance and private community trends. As we toured the Moss Creek facilities the afternoon before, Newman asked about the classes at the Fitness Center, special events at the Clubhouse, and summer activities for the children and grandchildren of our Members. In his presentation he emphasized that any Community can build state-of-the-art facilities, but a sense of Community is nurtured by providing excellent programming that provides members with personal fulfillment. Programming at Moss Creek is provided by clubs and interest groups, committees, and staff. The Long Range Planning Committee will re-view Moss Creek’s offerings with this important trend in mind. John Miller, the new MCOA General Manager, was able to join the Board for the orientation session and Board meeting where he was

brought up-to-date on our efforts to find space for the dog park, continue negotiations for a cell tower on property, and review the construction costs for the Gatehouse. Some of you may have had a chance to meet him during Friday evening happy hour. After Miller joins Moss Creek on February 17, we plan to have an evening Community meeting for Stable Gate owners with MCOA counsel, Weston Newton, who will explain the future alternatives for the Stable Gate pool. Watch for an announcement about the specific date. Coastline Construction has been selected as the con-tractor for the new Gatehouse. Construction may begin before the end of February and is expected to take about ninety days depending upon weather. If you were not able to see one of the October presentations about the Gatehouse project, the new Gatehouse will be constructed approximately forty feet behind the cur-rent structure allowing easier traffic flow into and out of Moss Creek Village as well as more room for traffic waiting for a pass. The speed bumps will be replaced with pavers to slow the traffic down. The right exit lane will be longer along Moss Creek Drive. MCOA also plans to extend the bike path to 278 so bikers will be able to cross at the traffic light. We are working along with Beaufort County on this project. The Gatehouse Task Force and staff have meetings in early February to view proposals for cameras and the electronic gate. We expect construction costs, equipment purchases, and landscaping will be completed under budget. Watch This Week at the Creek for notices about the pond repair and later Gatehouse construction.

Helpful Reminders from the

• Any additions and/or remodeling of existing structures, including re-roofing and re-painting/staining, requires approval prior to commencement of any work.

• All necessary plans must be complete and must be prepared by an approved design profes-sional, and all work performed by a similarly qualified contractor. Lists of qualified designers and builders are located on the Moss Creek website.

• Interior work requires no approval, but notification of such work is necessary and a Moss Creek permit must be issued if trash dumpsters and/or portable toilets are to be located on site.

• As long as the same materials and colors are being used, re-roofing and re-painting also re-quire no approval, only notification and a Moss Creek permit from the Administration office.

• It is strongly emphasized and recommended that Members, their architects, designers, and contractors become familiar with the ARB Guidelines and Procedures, which are available on the Moss Creek website.

• Removal of any tree 6” or greater in diameter must first be approved by the ARB. Most re-quests can be reviewed by management and a decision reached within a few days. Members must complete a Tree Removal Request Form and mark the trees. Applications and forms are also located on the Moss Creek website.

Has a Moss Creek staff member gone above and beyond to make someone’s day special?

If so, there is a new way to recognize that employee.

MCOA has initiated the O’Fishially Awesome Award. In keeping with the marshland ambi-ence of Moss Creek, we’ve chosen a fish as the theme of this recognition program. It has been piloted among the employees since October and is now being opened to Moss Creek Members so that they can recognize exemplary members of the Moss Creek staff. Members who have “caught” an employee doing something beyond his/her job description can recognize that staff member. You’ll find nomination cards at the Reception Desk in Administration, the reception desk of the Clubhouse, the Golf Shop, Fitness Center, and Tennis Center.

All you have to do is complete the card with the fish on a line and drop it into the yellow O’Fishially Awesome bag. Note what special effort the individual has made so that they can be a role model for others. And don’t forget the areas where people work behind the scenes to make your experience a stellar event.

The nomination cards will be gathered monthly. All nominees will be recognized in the Advocate the following month and on flyers in all the employee areas. Each nominee will be presented with a certificate of appreciation for his/her exemplary efforts. Also, five lucky winners chosen in a random monthly drawing will receive gas cards and all other nominees will receive a box of Swedish Fish. In addition, one name will be randomly se-lected in a quarterly drawing to win a gift card for a local store.

Community News

The holidays are over and now that all the lights are packed away and life returns to normal, the short winter days are more noticeable than ever. With sun setting while it still seems like afternoon, drivers spend more time on the roads in the dark during winter months, whether commuting home from work or just going about their daily routines. While many local roads are well lit at night, visibility is still not comparable to daytime driving. For those living in more rural areas, night time driving can be even more challenging with more open stretches and less street lighting.

At first glance, it doesn’t seem to be any more dangerous to drive at night than during the day. But data shows that daytime fatal crashes and night-time fatal crashes between dusk and dawn are about equal. However, once you fac-tor in that about four times more people travel on average during daylight than night, the rate of fatalities per user are greatly increased.

Now let’s factor in as we get older. According to the National Safety Council, vision is limited at night including depth perception, color recognition, and peripheral vision. As drivers age, they require even more light to see, making night-time driving more difficult. Fatigue is an added risk as drowsiness dulls concentration and slows reaction time. Reduc-ing speeds during nighttime hours is even more critical than during the day as lower alertness makes accidents more likely. We all know that accidents at lower speeds can save lives, instead of ending them.

Hopefully everyone here at Moss Creek will drive safely through 2014 and beyond.

WOU Manager Announces Retirement After almost 38 years of service, James Buckner, our Water Oak Utility Manager, has an-nounced he will retire at the end of May.

James has been a tremendous asset during the development and growth of Moss Creek. He stated in his retirement letter “I will always remember the great people, throughout the 38 years, who made – and make Moss Creek such a great Community in which to live and work. My deci-sion to retire was not an easy one, but I feel that it is time for me to slow down a little and spend more time with my other Family.”

James will be greatly missed, but rest assured that his staff is licensed and able to carry on the operations after he retires. The MCOA Board of Directors wishes James and his family many years of happy retirement, and thank him for his years of service to Moss Creek.

Defining Shell Beds on the North Golf Course We began work on #6 North shell bed in January. Our goal was to de-fine, drain, and slow down the erosion in the shell bed. The work started with root pruning the outside line of the bed. Then we dug out the roots in the area between the bed and the fairway. The next plan was to build a slight berm on the shell bed edge that touches the cart path. We will use the cart path and berm to direct the water to a catch basin located on the edge of the cart path. This will direct water into the drainage system located in the fairway. The area we removed the roots from was prepped, leveled, and sodded. The final step was adding shell in the bed thus achieving our final goal for the bed. If this is met with positive results, we will plan to do #18 and #1 North in the near future. Here are a few pictures of the work on #6 North:

Twilight Golf January Recap

2014 is off to a great start with 68 players in the January 17th Twilight Golf event. The format was a Four-Person Scramble with a TWIST. The player who made the putt for the team, could not tee off for the team on the next hole. Con-gratulations to all of the winners and the next Twilight event is scheduled for Feb-ruary 7; the sign-up was posted on Janu-ary 24. Thank you for playing!

Director of Golf

THANK YOU!!!

5

Tom and I just want to say thank you again for your support of our Patriot Golf Day

Marathon in September. We congratulate YOUYOUYOUYOU on your efforts and support. We recently

received an update from the Carolinas PGA. Over 200 courses in the Carolinas Section

participated and Moss Creek was the 13131313thththth highest donorhighest donorhighest donorhighest donor! Awesome!

I think we can all agree January was not a fun golfing month. Old Man Winter certainly blew a lot of cold weather and frost delays our direction. Hopefully, Feb-ruary will bring us higher temperatures and more days on the golf course. The staff had a great trip to Or-lando for the PGA Merchandise Show. This is a terrific opportunity for us to network with fellow professionals and research products and services. We are on a constant mission to find new ideas to help us enhance the Member experience and improve your golf games! Assistant Professional, Josh Carmichael, had the unique opportunity to hit golf balls for Jim Hardy the Monday before the Merchandise Show. Before the Show I received a phone call from former staff profes-sional, Shane LeBaron. Shane is currently the Direc-tor of Instruction at the Wigwam Resort in Phoenix, AZ, and is one of only twelve Level 3 Plane Truth Golf Instructors in the country. Shane was assisting nation-ally acclaimed golf instructor and the founder of The Plane Truth, Jim Hardy, at Metro West Golf Club with a Level I Plane Truth certification school. Shane called to see if any of our staff could help out. One portion of the school is professionals watching Jim Hardy critique and teach students on the driving range. We sent Joshua to be the student hitting balls for Hardy and he had a blast and learned a lot. Another

example of Moss Creek creating great golf profession-als and how we keep in touch with each other to help grow and learn! Welcome Tracy Schooler to the Professional Staff!

Most importantly this month, I want to introduce Tracy Schooler. Tracy is from Charleston, SC, and has accepted the position of Assistant Golf Professional; he joins the staff

February 6. Tracy is a native of Lebanon, Indiana. Af-ter 23 years of being self-employed in the agriculture industry he moved south to escape the cold and fell in love with the game of golf. You will find Tracy to be a very positive and driven individual who is enthusiastic about getting the Membership excited about playing golf and providing outstanding customer service. Tracy was named Employee of the Year for the last three years straight in his positions at Dunes West Golf & River Club and River Towne Country Club. Tracy has completed all three Levels of the PGA Golf Manage-ment program, has passed his playing ability test, and will gain full Class A membership into the PGA of America in July. Tracy has two daughters and three grandchildren. His wife, Shelley, has three children. Please join me in welcoming Tracy to the Moss Creek team!

Valentine’s Day Social The Moss Creek Tennis Club will hold their annual Valentine’s Day Round Robin on Saturday, February 8, from 4:00-6:00pm. We have a new format this year for the Valentine’s event. It will be a flighted event this year with the 1st flight being 8.0+, 2nd flight will be 6.5+, and 3rd flight will be the social flight. The sign-up sheet is posted in the Tennis Cen-ter. Participants can sign up with a partner or ask us to put you together with a partner. Team Matches USTA Spring Season has started and Moss Creek will field 14 teams this year. Teams will be playing in the 55+ leagues, the 40+ leagues, the 18+ leagues, and 75+ leagues. Match schedules are posted on the outside bulletin board at the Tennis Center, as well as inside the Tennis Center. Stop by to watch some exciting tennis matches and support your fellow Moss Creek Members. College Tennis Collegiate Tennis is returning to Moss Creek for two dual matches again this year. The matches will be on March 10 and March 13. Times are still to be determined. Watch communications for more information.

7

As we start the USTA season, inevitably there is one situation that continually happens in matches, and no I

am not talking about forgetting the score, we will save that for another day. What happens when the receiv-

ing team reverses their returning sides in the middle of a set. If you read through the Friend at Court, it tells

you “any such error shall be rectified as soon as discovered but not while the ball is in play, and any points

completed under erroneous conditions shall be counted.” However, if you continue to read further, there

are exceptions to “rectify immediately.” One of which is this particular instance. If the doubles team re-

verses their court positions mid-set and it is discovered in the middle of a game the players shall finish the

current game in their “new” positions. They will then need to resume their original positions for all receiv-

ing games thereafter in the set.

Success comes with consistency. Whether it be working out, eating healthy, doing physical therapy, walking the dog, playing bridge, playing tennis or golf, meeting for a book club, or simply meeting friends for dinner. It seems that if you keep the meeting time, place, and day of week regular you are more likely to keep the appointment. That’s how many of us operate, we are routine and like it that way. Change is hard; especially if we are not the ones to initiate the change. Here at the Fitness Center we are working very hard to keep things consistent. We currently are a staff of four and have just added Jay Goodwin to our team as Head Trainer. I’ve been with Moss Creek since February 2012 and be-came Facilities Manager in August 2013, I bring organiza-tion and an eye for detail along with a willingness to listen to the needs of the Members. Amber Reynolds is our Per-sonal Trainer and has been with Moss Creek since April 2013, she has lots of energy and fun workout ideas along with recently getting certified as a Senior Fitness Specialist. We have a staff of two young ladies who work the front desk during evenings and weekends - Jasmine Shavers just cele-brated her one year anniversary here and Kristen Doerr

started in October. Know when you come to the Fitness Center you will be warmly greeted and we are always avail-able to assist with any questions you have regarding equip-ment or programming. Our class instructors are top-notch and we pride ourselves on offering classes that meet the needs of the Membership along with encouraging a bonding experience both during the workout and outside the Fitness Center. While our tenure may not be that long, I can assure you that we are all committed to the health, fitness, and safety of each and every Member and Guest of Moss Creek. We look forward to helping you achieve your health goals – whether it be through one of our upcoming seminars, a ma-chine orientation, a free evaluation, one-on-one personal training, or working out on your own. We are here to help! Moss Creek is a Community that is based on unity and we strive to consistently present that atmosphere at the Fitness Center.

WELCOME—Jay Goodwin, Personal Trainer

Jay has been an avid athlete his whole life which introduced him to training at an early age. His passion for anatomy and physiology led him to pursue a degree in Exercise Science from Lander University. While at-tending Lander University he was a four year starter for the Bearcats baseball team as well as being named Captain his Junior and Senior year. During this time, Jay interned with Furman University's strength and con-ditioning program. By his senior year, Jay was in charge of programming and implementing training protocols

for Furman University's men and women's golf program. Jay has been a certified personal trainer for ten years and holds certifi-cations through NASM, ISSA, Titleist Performance Institute (level 2), and is a NSCA certified strength and conditioning specialist. After years of seeing all the injuries that occur from sports and everyday life Jay saw the need to continue his education. This drove him to obtain his M.S. in Kinesiology, NASM corrective exercise specialist certification, and become a licensed massage therapist with an additional sports massage certification. Jay specializes in Golf Performance, pre/post rehabilitation, and weight loss. Whether you are a golfer looking to perform better or looking to improve your quality of life Jay is excited to help you on your journey to safely reach your goals.

Clubhouse News

Jim O’Connor

Clubhouse Manager

I hope that all our Members are safe and sound after Winter Storm Leon. It was tough to postpone the monthly “It’s Your Birthday” buffet, but every one of our Members that had reservations for the Wednesday Night came the next night to en-joy Chef Lenny’s wonderful feast.

We have a few events coming up that I want to make sure you all are aware of and then get into some Clubhouse re-minders. By the time you read this, we will probably have hosted our second Bingo Night on February 1, which will hosted by myself and the wonderful Melissa Sheire. I am proud to say that since the first bingo night back in the summer, we have doubled our participation. Our next event is the always well attended, Moss Creek Piano Recital. This event is always a sellout and continues with Mrs. Putnam’s help to be a tremendous success.

On Thursday, February 13, join us for our Valentine’s celebration. I know some of you are saying, “Why not hold it on Valentine’s Day?” The answer is, that to do a signature event, we would have to take away from a Member sacred event that happens every Friday at the Clubhouse with live entertainment and happy hour drink specials. On Thursday eve-ning, Bobby Ryder will serenade the couples as they enjoy a decadent meal prepared by Chef Lenny and team. There will be dancing and romance in the air, so if you do not have reservations, please call as space is very limited. This brings me to the Oyster Roast on February 22. We will hold 180 spots for any Member that wants to show off their shuck-ing skills and dine on the amazing treat of the fabulous gulf oysters. We will have live entertainment and the rare opportu-nity to wear jeans in the Clubhouse!

What a segue to my next topic—jeans. Please keep in mind, if you wear jeans into the Clubhouse, you can sit in the Grill Room only. It seems like we have more and more Members or family members coming to events or a la carte dining wearing jeans. If this happens, I will have to ask you to move to the Grill Room, as it states in our Rules and Regulations. Another reminder I should point out is the reservation policy. We have a standard 72-hour policy for all events. If we are within the 72-hour time frame before an event, we will bill you for the event if you do not find a replacement for your reser-vation. The second part of the 72-hour policy is the window to make reservations. We try our best to accommodate Members for special events within 72 hours of an event, but this makes things very difficult for ordering, preparing food and scheduling required staff. Please make all reservations prior to 72 hours of an event to assure your spot. See you at the Club!

Beginning this month we will proudly begin serving Thumann’s deli meats at the Clubhouse. As some of you know, we had been serving Boar’s Head deli meats for the past two years now, and for Boar’s Head devotees (like myself) I thought this decision required an explanation. Let me start by saying that I was skeptical that Thumann’s could match, or even surpass the quality and consistency of Boar’s Head products when I was first contacted by them almost seven months ago. Since that time, through sev-eral tastings and informational sessions, I have made the confident decision that making this switch is the best way to provide the highest quality, healthiest product available to the Membership here at Moss Creek. Many of you from the Northeast region may be familiar with the Thumann’s name, but for those that are not, I’d like to share a little information about the company and its products. Thumann’s was founded in 1949 in Wallington, NJ and from the outset it was a company driven to provide the highest quality products it could with minimal intrusions on the natural flavor of the meats. Every one of the products are certified gluten free, contain no MSG, and only use enough salt as required for the curing process. There are no fillers, extenders, artificial colors, or by-products in any of the meats. Many of the whole cuts, such as the pastrami brisket and corned beef round are still trimmed by butchers hands at their processing facility in New Jersey. At the risk of sounding like I’m giving the “hard sell” for these products, I would invite you to do as I did. Come by the Clubhouse and try one of these fantastic deli sandwiches. You see, all the health benefits and natural processing methods don’t mean a thing if it doesn’t make a great sandwich. Just bring your appetite and an open mind. I think you’ll find this was a change worth making.
