Term 1 of 2015 has brought with it some exciting developments with the official opening of Hstings Secondary College. Here’s your Term1 wrap up! Harmony Day Harmony Day was a roaring success at the beginning of March this term. Students from all grades partici-pated in showing their support for Australia’s great cultural diversity. The day started off with a morning assembly and a talk from Madeline Tait of Year 11 about her move from Canada to Australia. Students were then either given an orange balloon or official Harmony Day ribbon. A lunchtime dodge ball tour-nament was one of the highlights for students with all grades participating and a large cheer squad watching eagerly on the sideline. A beautiful Harmony Day banner was also made by students and can be seen hanging in the library.

Closing the Gap An assembly was held this term where students watched a short film about the Closing the Gap campaign. The Closing the Gap campaign is all about lessening the difference between the life expectancy of Australian's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-indigenous Aus-tralians.

Blood Red This term has shown the beginning of Blood Red broadcasting at Westport Campus. Four of our students on the leadership team Tahlia Miechel, Gabriel Herron, Madeline Tait and Reef Christen-sen attended the Sea Acres leaning how to be a blood Ambassador. Westport Campus was joined by Port Macquarie Campus, Camden Haven, Mel-ville Highs School and a school from the Great Lakes.

College Roadshows Student leaders represented Hastings Secondary College at ‘roadshows’ this term to talk about their experiences with the college to parents and primary school students. Madeline Tait and Emma Sinclair went to Hastings Primary School, Isabella Harrison went to Westport Primary School and Georgia Clarke and Gabriel Herron went to Tack-ing Point Primary. All Westport Campus repre-sentatives were accompanied by Port Macquarie Campus leaders.

Leadership Team This years Westport Campus’ new leader-ship team has been working hard to focus on making sure Hastings Secondary College and Westport Campus succeed to their full potential. Fortnightly leadership meetings have allowed a time to discuss any issues within the school and upcom-ing events. In order to make sure every-thing is covered the leadership team has been broken up on smaller sub com-mittees to alow for proper allocation of time and effort to each area of school life. These sub committees include: Fundraising Committees: with the

members Madeline Tait, Georgia Clarke and Gabriel Herron

Spirit Committee: with the members Emma Sinclair, Madeline Tait, Geor-gia Clarke, Tahlia Miechel, Isabella Harrison and Gabriel Herron

Sports Committee: with the mem-bers Reef Christensen and Blanchard Mwanza

Pigtails for Peace

On Friday – Westport Campus participated in the 2015 National Day of Action against Bullying & Violence. The students partici-pated in a number of activities including participating in Mrs Frater’s photo booth were they could take photos of themselves with their friends & post it up on their social networking page.

The hairstyles for the day were Piggy tails for the girls and comb-overs for the boys. This was to demonstrate that you can take a stand in a peaceful manner while still be-ing assertive. The Pastoral Care Connect classes had been discussing the story of “Pigtail Girl”. This was inspired by an event in America where a girl had been teased for wearing pigtails & the school responded in a positive way by all students & staff wearing their hair in pigtails as a show of support.

During Lunch 1 a free sausage sizzle was put on in the main Quad while Headspace held an information stalfor the students with re-source material, as well as give-aways. Tracey and Casey from Headspace did a wonderful job answering the questions that the students had for them and soon ran out of supplies due to the popularity of their stock. Headspace provides valuable mental health services to many and they are widely respected throughout the service industry.

Our postponed talks from Senior Constable Steve Jeffrey and a follow up from Head-space’s Tracey Hazel will take place early next Term.

CHS Swimming Jennifer Cooper attended the Combined High

Schools State Swimming Carnival at Sydney

Olympic Pool last Saturday to compete in the

14yrs Girls 200m Freestyle. As the only individ-

ual representing Westport Campus, Jennifer’s

qualifying time placed her in an outside lane of

the fastest preliminary heat. Competition was

pretty stiff but Jennifer held her own during

the race, finishing a commendable 8th with a

time of 2m 34.87s, narrowly missing out on a

place in the final. Congratulations Jennifer on

an outstanding performance and thank you for

a prestigious

event.

What’s happening in HSIE 2015 is the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign. This is a significant milestone in our history and commemoration calendar. The AN-ZAC legend is a key part of our identity as a na-tion. To commemorate this important event we are encouraging students to consider the continu-ing importance and contribution of Australian servicemen and women and the ANZAC tradi-tion. Students are invited to enter a poster in our competition or write an essay, addressing fol-lowing: The Gallipoli campaign defined our nation and is one of the most powerful influences on our identity. Details can also be found in the HSIE faculty. Ancient History Students in the HSC Ancient History class have been studying the ancient societies of Pompeii and Herculaneum. As part of their research on the daily lives of the citizens of these cities they recreated the dress of some tradesmen using

Anzac Day goes beyond the anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day on which we remember the Australians who served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. The spirit of Anzac, with its human qualities of courage, mate-ship, and sacrifice, continues to have mean-ing and relevance for our sense of national identity.” Australian War Memorial Anzac Day is an important national day com-memorating the service, sacrifice and contri-bution of our service men and women. Anzac Day is an important acknowledgement of our defence force personnel, both past and pre-sent. Westport Campus has a proud tradition of recognising and commemorating Anzac Day along with the Port Macquarie community in the ANZAC Day march. This year is the first year that Hastings Secondary College will march in the parade and represents an op-portunity to unite with Port Macquarie Cam-pus and demonstrate our gratitude to the Defence Force personnel, both today and in the past, who have sacrificed for our nation. We would like to warmly invite and encour-age all students to march with our college on Anzac Day, Saturday 25th April 2015. The stu-dent captains and leaders from both cam-puses, along with staff and students will par-ticipate together. It is an opportunity for stu-dents to demonstrate their appreciation of the defence forces, community spirit and citi-zenship. Participating students will be recog-nised and acknowledged by our school com-munity with a certificate and voucher on as-sembly. Students should

Street, near the

Pink Stumps Day 2015

Page 7

In week 10 of Term 1 WASCALS (Westport Aware Students of Cancer And Leukaemia Sufferers) along with the help of Hastings Secondary College – Westport Campus students raised $1100 to support the McGrath Foundation. Students in Years 7 and 8 participated in the Pink Stumps Day which was WASCALS’ way to help the McGrath Founda-tion fund McGrath Breast Care Nurses who provide im-portant care to families experiencing breast cancer.

For a $2 donation students participated in a variety of crick-et games during their sport time including trying to bowl out the two best batsmen at school – William Lewthwaite and Mitchell Buchtmann. There were plenty of great prizes given out including pink hats, pink sunglasses, pink wrist bands and pink bangles.

At the conclusion of the cricket games students enjoyed a sausage sizzle and a refreshing can of soft drink. A big thankyou goes out to all those involved especially super cooks Mrs Frater and Year 7 student Emily Stone.

WASCALS look forward to your continued support through-out the remainder of the year.

National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy 2015

LETTER TO PARENTS

In May 2015 the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. NAPLAN has the support of all State and Territory Education Ministers and will assess the literacy and numeracy skills of students across Australian schools. The results of the tests will provide important information to schools about what each student can do, and will be used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating their child’s level of achievement. Each student’s level of achievement will be reported against the national minimum standard. Student background information (student name, gender, date of birth, language background and Aboriginality) will be collected as part of the National Assessment Program. This information is treated confidentially and held securely to ensure that every student’s right to privacy is maintained. The NAPLAN tests will be conducted from 12-14 May 2015.

In the Numeracy tests students do not require any measuring tools such as rulers or protractors. In Years 7 and 9 there will be two Numeracy tests: one where a calculator is allowed and one where calculators are not to be used. For the calculator test, the student should use the calculator that they currently use at school.

Friday 15 May – A ‘catch-up’ day is scheduled for students who missed a test or were absent on a test day. Students may be considered for exemption from the tests if they:

are newly arrived in Australia (less than one year before the test) and with a language background other than English, or

have significant intellectual disability and/or significant co-existing conditions which severely limit their capacity to par-ticipate in the tests. All other students are expected to participate in the tests. Disability adjustments which reflect the student’s normal level of support in the classroom may be provided. Large print, Braille, coloured paper versions and electronic tests are avail-able to meet the needs of individual students. Access to disability adjustments or exemption from the tests must be discussed with the school principal and a parent or carer consent form must be signed. Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by parents in con-sultation with the Principal. If you wish to withdraw your child from the tests, a parent or carer consent form must be signed. Please make an appointment with the principal of the school your child attends if you would like to discuss your child’s participation in NAPLAN. Additional information about NAPLAN can be found at www.nap.edu.au/NAPLAN/Parent_Carer_support/index.html.

A second ‘White Card’ course was held during the week with participants from Years 10, 11 and

12 involved. On behalf of all students from both groups I would like to thank Joe Marshall from

Port Macquarie TAFE who conducted these induction courses. He was most complimentary of

the work ethic and attitude shown by all students and wanted his congratulations passed on to

participants. Six Year 12 students who hope to be involved in the Health Industry travelled to Taree last week

to attend the Newcastle University Health Careers Forum. Our Aged Care School Based Train-

ees, Brooke Anderson, Kylah Mahoney, Hazel Kirkbride and Mikaela Parker along with Megan

Cooper and Kaylie Mepham took part in workshops and activities that showed off the facilities

available for training of Health Care workers. All six believe the experience was most worthwhile. Year 10 students will be offered the opportunity to attend the Mid Coast Careers Market to be

held at the Racecourse on Tuesday 12th May. Local employers and training providers will increase

awareness of vocational pathways, training opportunities and post school options. Year 10 stu-

dents will gain keep insights that will help greatly with subject selections for the senior school

which will take place in Term 2 and therefore all in the year are encouraged to attend. Permission

notes need to be returned ASAP. Enjoy the coming holiday break and remember to check your school email account for all the lat-
