It has been 665 days since there has been decent rainfall in these areas and many of them have not had a viable income for the last two years. They have not had an income from their own crops due to a lack of rainfall and the ground cover of grass to feed their own livestock is all but gone. Most farmers are at the point where they have to order in grain and hay to feed their animals. They spend most of their day handfeeding their animals just to keep them alive. The cost of ordering in hay is in the vicinity of $9500 for a semi-trailer load including freight within 900 kilometres and the cost of grain is as high as it has ever been. There has been situations where once the hay arrives it is mouldy where top dollar has been paid for an inferior product. Breaking News …. Fiver for a Farmer raises $3000
Fiver for a Farmer
As you know our farmers are “doing it tough” at the moment, particularly in
NSW and Queensland. It has been 665 days since there has been decent
rainfall in these areas and many of them have not had a viable income for the
last two years. They have not had an income from their own crops due to a
lack of rainfall and the ground cover of grass to feed their own livestock is all
but gone. Most farmers are at the point where they have to order in grain and
hay to feed their animals. They
spend most of their day handfeeding
their animals just to keep them alive.
The cost of ordering in hay is in the
vicinity of $9500 for a semi-trailer
load including freight within 900
kilometres and the cost of grain is as
high as it has ever been. There has
been situations where once the hay
arrives it is mouldy where top dollar
has been paid for an inferior
product. Many farmers have had to
sell half or more of their livestock
due to a lack of food while some
farmers have had to shoot their
cattle before they starve to death.
While farmers are resilient people
this dire situation has seen an
increase in the mental health of our
farmers and the subsequent impact
on families in these communities.
As a school community we want to support the farmers by way of donations
to ease some of the financial burdens they face. Today, Friday the 17th August
we held a Fiver for a Farmer fundraiser. This idea came about by a 10 year old
school student at Freshwater on the northern beaches as a way of
supporting the famers. As such we asked that each student and staff

member donate $5.00 towards this cause.
Students and staff were asked to wear a straw or
wide brimmed hat today to represent the farmers
and a sausage sizzle was held at lunchtime. All
proceeds will go to support the farmers.
This was an SRC initiative and we thank these
students and Mrs Linda Jones for leading this
fundraising exercise. It makes me very proud to
be a part of the Crestwood Community where I
see the generous nature of our students, their
families and staff. Wanting to help others when
they need it shows great character and generosity
of spirit, of which our students here at
Crestwood have it in abundance. Thank you in
anticipation to everyone who has contributed to the Fiver for a Farmer fundraiser. We encourage our
neighbouring schools to also take part in this initiative.

The Turning Page - English and Drama News
Crestwood’s Book Club gathered together at lunch time on the 16th
of August to discuss their thoughts on John Green’s novel ‘Turtles All The Way Down’.
Despite conflicting opinions, students were encouraged to think of a positive and negative on the novel.
“I enjoyed the philosophical aspects of the book and how it gave the perspective and view of a person
experiencing a mental illness. It was a really interesting read.” – Natarina Ramdhana
“I enjoyed the poetry and deep thinking done by the character Davis. I didn’t like how quickly the plot
passed at the end.” – Lana Vidakovic
“John Green’s ‘Turtles All The Way Down’ was both intriguing and disappointing at the same time. It was
interesting to be inside a person with anxiety’s head, however I felt the main points of the story weren’t
executed to the standard expected from John Green.” – Lillian White
“I liked how in two chapters or so, the story was narrated in second person. I really disliked the title
‘Turtles All The Way Down’, as it was completely irrelevant to the story and made me believe in ‘don’t
judge a book by its cover’ in a counter-productive way.” – Danial Yazdani

We have continued congestion around the school in the morning between 8:00 and 8:30 and in the afternoon
between 3:00 and 3:30. As a result, the Hills Shire Council, in partnership with the Hills Police Local Area
command have installed a few more no stopping signs and no parking signs. Please take care when parking and
moving through the school zone.
Please remember the following rules;
No Stopping – You must not STOP at any time. Stopping includes when the vehicle is not moving but the
engine is still running.
No Parking - You can stop only to drop off or pickup passengers or goods and you must not stop for
more than 2 minutes and the driver must stay within 3 metres of your vehicle. Stopping includes when the vehicle
is not moving but the engine is still running.
Bus Zone – You must not stop your vehicle in a Bus Zone unless you are driving a public bus. Stopping
includes when the vehicle is not moving but the engine is still running.
Drive ways - You must not park your car over or block access to a driveway. You can stop in a
driveway to drop off or pick up passengers BUT only for less than 2 minutes AND the driver must stay with the car.
Parking
It is illegal to:
Park a vehicle within 10m of an intersection
Park a vehicle within 20m approaching a Bus Stop sign and 10m departing a Bus Stop sign
Park on a footpath or nature strip (public area between road)
Not park in the direction of travel (wrong side of the road)
Park within 3m of a continuous centre dividing line or strip
Park within 1m of another vehicle
Unreasonably cause obstruction to another vehicle or pedestrian
To ensure the safety of all of our students the Highway Patrol will continue to patrol the streets around the
school.
Max Potential
Two of our students, Himaja Dave and Grace Lanyon have completed the Max Potential program in association
with the Future Achievement Australia Foundation and Castle Hill RSL. Himaja and Grace presented their Max
Potential showcase this week and received rave reviews. The Crestwood community sends congratulations to
these two amazing students.
Trial HSC Examinations
Trial HSC examinations begin today. These examinations mirror the expectations of the HSC for the year 12
cohort and the rest of the school in supporting Year 12. We wish them well for the Trials and for the last few
weeks of preparation for the actual HSC.

We are about to launch a new competition to modernise our school logo open to all members of
our school community. We feel that our current logo looks “dated” and in need of a re-vamp.
We will make entry forms available at school, in a future edition of the school newsletter and also
on the school website. Stay tuned!
Crestwood New Logo Design
The graphic on this logo is representative of pine trees in the school and the
local area. It was designed by a Creative Arts teacher in approximately 1983.
The “vision and progress” was developed by a student after a school-wide
competition.
This logo was modernised by Mr Carthew in 2016. The aim was to change
the logo to introduce colour, whilst maintaining the aesthetics of the original
logo.
Criteria:
Maintain the “Vision and Progress” motto
Incorporate the school colours
Hints:
Keep it simple
It should be instantly recognised
Ideally, it should look good in B&W or colour
It should represent Crestwood HS

This week our school community came together to show its support for Australia’s Farmers who are
doing it tough.
Fiver for a Farmer is an initiative started by a 10 year old Sydney boy, Jack Bernie.
He had been learning about the drought and the farmers and heard that there are kids that are skipping
school to help out on their farms.
He and his school mates wanted to fundraise for the Farmers—”A fiver for a Farmer”
All funds raised will be forwarded to Rural Aid — a central point of focus to provide assistance and relief
for farmers in distress and poverty and Drought Angels—A unique service offering drought relief through
support for rural families in need. A small charity run by big hearts.
A huge thank you to all students and staff who raised just over $3,000 from donations and the sale of sau-
sage sandwiches and thank you to all who helped out. Doyle and Ward
houses raised $900 each house, a fantastic effort!
Week 5 will be our SRC elections held on Thursday morning in home
group. Congratulations to all who nominated including:
