Anzac Day It was wonderful to see so many of our students
and staff engaged in the ANZAC Day activities. Our
students are learning to be wonderful members of
the larger community. A special thanks to Makaila
Gordon, Brennah Aumua and Alice Potter who
spoke at the various ceremonies.
2015-2017 School Plan The three year school plan has been put up on our
website. Thank you to all who contributed to the
process. I am excited that we will be making a real
difference with the processes that are being put in
place.
Tell Them From Me Survey Last term students completed the Tell Them From
Me Survey. We have received the results which we
are currently analysing. The results also compare
Cobar High School to a pilot group of NSW Public
Schools. Shortly we will also receive a comparison
to all the NSW Public Schools who participated in
the survey in Term 1.
New Staff We welcome Mr Frank Zart who is replacing Mr
Phillis who is on sick leave. Mr Zart will be in the
Maths Staffroom. Ms Kym Sutton is doing Ms
Jacklin’s leave and Ms Paige Jermyn is doing Ms
Donaldson’s sick leave.
It is wonderful to be back at Cobar High School.
Thank you to Shane Carter and John Carswell who
so capably led the school whilst I was Relieving
Director. It is great to see the wonderful things that
our students and staff are doing on a daily basis.
Shane and John will continue in the relieving
positions two days a week when I am Principal
School Leadership.

Outback Science and Engineering Challenge
Tuesday 28 April 2015
Thirty one students from the Year 9 and 10 Science self-select classes attended the Outback Science and
Engineering Challenge on Tuesday to compete against seven other schools
from Western NSW.
There were eight challenging tasks that required students to think
logically, creatively and dynamically as well as display patience and team
work skills. Not only did the students perform to the best of their ability
during each task; they showed respect to each other, event volunteers and
students from other schools. Students were commended for their excellent
behaviour from community members and organisers of the competition.
The tables below show the final score tally and Cobar High School’s
ranking for each challenge.
A special mention must be made to our catapult team consisting of Owen Potter,
Jessica Nicholson, Dylan Menadue and James Anderson, as they built and tested
the best catapult for the day. Well done!
The challenge allowed the students to engage with Science, Maths and
Engineering in a fun and practical manner and gave them a taste of what Science
can involve beyond the classroom. Thank you to the Rotary Club of Cobar, The
University of Newcastle, and all other sponsors for allowing our students this
opportunity.
Well done to all students on their excellent display of knowledge, skills and team
work!

Soccer Report Soccer, football, round-ball; call it what you
will, really is the world game. It incorporates
fast movement, in-depth thought processes,
and well devised stratagem. It is a game of
wits, strength, speed and, above all else,
enjoyment.
Cobar played host to a game that encompassed
all the features that make Soccer the world’s
most played game. A hard fought battle took
place between Cobar High School and Broken
Hill High School, on the luscious arena that is the Cobar
High School Sporting Field.
Both teams fielded formidable teams, and the game was
played at a high pace. Cobar began the game with immense
ferocity, lighting up the gathering crowd. It looked as
though they would score on numerous occasions, but the
Broken Hill defence persevered. The first ten minutes
was all Cobar, and Broken Hill management were looking
worried.
They, Broken Hill, did, however, bounce back, and were the first to
score. With a well-played move that split the otherwise tight Cobar
defence. This was the encouragement Broken Hill needed, and they
began to play with a newfound skill level, reminiscent of the great
Manchester United team of Yesteryear.
Cobar did, however, stand tall, and played with their hearts on their
sleeves, creating many opportunities, and, at times, passing the ball
with great efficiency. The game ended up going to Broken Hill, but
our boys played their hearts out, and must be congratulated on
their sportsmanship and perseverance.
Honourable mentions to Dylan Menadue, Nicholas Buckman and Jye
Robinson, for their high quality efforts.
A special thanks to Mr Ford who kindly offered his time to referee
the game and provided some world class officiating.
We’ll be back next year, and with this experience under our
proverbial belts, we’ll be ready to take on the world.
Premiers’ Reading Challenge
It is a requirement of the students in the Self Select classes to participate in the Premiers’ Reading Chal-
lenge each year. The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students,
and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student
to read, to read more and to read more widely.
Students must keep a record of the books that they have read and record this information online. Years 7-9
must read a minimum of 15 books with a maximum of 5 choice books (books of their own choice). Stu-
dent reading logs can now be entered online. Entries close 21st August, 2015.
English Teachers will assist in the organisation and entering of reading logs. Please visit the school library
or the town library for appropriate books to read.

Tax File Numbers (TFN)
Cobar High School has received formal notice of the termination of the Secondary Schools Tax File Number (TFN) Program between the Australian Taxation Office and all schools from 31st December 2014.
Why was the program terminated? The Australian Government is strengthening proof of identity (POI) processes through a standardised national approach for government agencies. The Secondary Schools TFN program does not comply with these guidelines which require sighting and verification of original proof of identity documents.
How can students apply for a TFN? Applying online and presenting POI documents at a participating Australia Post Office is the fastest and most convenient way for students to get a TFN. More information on applying online can be found at ato.gov.au by searching for ’QC27248’
Students who are unable to visit a participating Australia Post office will need to complete the application form Tax file number - application or enquiry for individuals form (NAT 1432). More information about lodging this form can be found at ato.gov.au by searching for ’QC22604’
Please see Mrs Nicholson if you have any questions or concerns about this process.

Each year our students are offered the opportunity to participate in external competitions run by the University of NSW, The Australian Geographical Society and the History Teachers Association of Australia. These competitions provide our students with valuable experience of testing procedures outside our school environment. Dates for 2015 entry fees and competition dates are:
Payment must be received by the due dates, or if you prefer, several/all entries may be paid in advance. It would be appreciated if correct money (cash or cheque) could be brought to the Administration Office as we do not carry change.
All students are invited to participate in any/all of the competitions. If your student is not in a Select Class, information and return slips may be obtained from Year Advisers or the Front Office. We wish your student well in the competitions and thank you for supporting your child’s learning.
