We are beginning our fifth year of the BackPack Ministry for children attending Wylie Primary School. This is our church-wide mission project, and over the past five years, we have had the opportunity to help more than 150 less-fortunate children in our community. All of this has been due to your love and generosity of time and donations. We hear so much about hunger in different parts of the world when in fact, hunger is a reality right here in our own community. According to recent statistics, one in four East Texas children is at risk of hunger. When a child does not have enough food to meet basic needs, he or she is considered to be “ food insecure”. The BackPack Ministry provides meals and snacks to children whose primary source of food is the school cafeteria. By providing a backpack with food items to help sustain them until returning to school for a meal, their nutritional and overall well-being needs are met. Each week, on a scheduled day, usually Thursday, a church volunteer travels to the PALS Food Bank in Henderson on Jacksonville Drive. The volunteer picks up the pre-packed food that has been delivered from the East Texas Food Bank in Tyler. Once the food is picked up, it is delivered to the Wylie Primary Campus. A school representative then assists the volunteer with unloading the food packs. The backpacks are discreetly distributed to the children each Friday afternoon and the last day before an extended holiday vacation such as, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Spring Break. The food provides them with nutritious meals throughout the weekend. The cost of providing backpack meals for a child the entire school year is $162. Donations can be made for the full amount or for a portion of the cost, and any amount given is greatly appreciated! We are beginning our fifth year of the BackPack Ministry for children attending Wylie Primary School.
This is our church-wide mission project, and over the past five years, we have had the opportunity to
help more than 150 less-fortunate children in our community. All of this has been due to your love
and generosity of time and donations.
We hear so much about hunger in different parts of the world when in fact, hunger is a reality right here in our own community.
According to recent statistics, one in four East Texas children is at risk of hunger. When a child does not have enough food to meet basic
