St. John’s Lutheran Church NEWSLETTER Volume 2015 • Issue 10 OCTOBER For St. John’s disciples Andy, Jennifer, Jake, and Lucas Read, it’s all about connections. Since joining St. John’s in 2006, the Read family has experienced deep connections with many in the congregation through their active involvement and participation. Andy, who works as the Assistant Director of Marketing for Campus Recreation at Illinois State University in Normal, greatly enjoyed serving as a small group leader for confirmation and looks forward to the fellowship hour each Sunday morning when he can visit and catch up with other disciples at St. John’s. In addition, Andy serves as a reader for the 8:00 a.m. sanctuary service. For several years now, Jennifer, who works as the Project Manager at Resource One, has taught our 3 rd Grade Bible class as part of our midweek Sprout! ministry and greatly values the relationships she has formed with both the youth and their parents. In addition, Jennifer currently serves as the team leader of our Stewardship Vision Team, working closely with other team members Dennis Bomke, Lisa Hartzler, and Adam Reiss. For the Read boys, Jake and Lucas, it’s the friendships they have developed with other youth at St. John’s that they value the most. Through his involvement in confirmation, Encounter, and Leadership Lab, Jake, a sophomore at Southeast High School, has developed close relationships with the other St. John’s youth both from Southeast and other area high schools. Lucas, a sixth grader at Franklin Middle School, also enjoys the friends he has made through Sunday School and other church activities and looks forward to starting confirmation next year. In Jake and Lucas’ own words, “St. John’s has helped us be more connected to Christ and to go out and connect others to Christ as well!” The Read family greatly appreciates the variety of options available in and through St. John’s to help them learn and grow in their faith and discipleship. They also value the way St. John’s challenges them to go out and share their faith in the community through both their words and their actions. As they look to the future of our congregation, the Reads recognize the need to grow our staff in order to maintain the growth in discipleship and relationships with Christ, with one another, and with the community. Thank you, Read family, for your faithful discipleship to Christ here at St. John’s! IN

NEWSLETTERVolume 2015 • Issue 10OCTOBER
For St.
For several years now, Jennifer, who works as the Project Manager at Resource One, has taught our 3rd Grade Bible class as part of our midweek Sprout! ministry and greatly values the relationships she has formed with both
the youth and their parents.
John’s has helped us be more connected to Christ and to go out and connect others to Christ as well!”
The Read family greatly appreciates the variety of options available in and through St.
John’s!
Ready…Set…Grow! Our hope and prayer is that this fall theme will encourage you as disciples at St. John’s to get Ready…Set…Grow in your relationships with God, with one another, and with the community. So how do you grow in your relationships with one another? This sounds like such a simple question, but when I say grow, I am not simply asking how do you learn more about someone via Facebook or Instagram or a quick, “hello” in the hallway at church or at work or even at home. I am talking about growing relationships in an intentional and sincere way. I think the best answer to this question cannot be found in modern society, which focuses on social media as its primary means of rela-tionship growth. Instead I think we need to turn back to scripture and see how God has grown in His relation-ship with us.
Three points stand out to me about how God has cultivated a relationship with us. First, He recognized that He and we were created to be in relationships with other people (Gen. 1:27). We were not created to be isolated from others. It is in God-given relationships with others that we begin to have a foretaste of the love God has for us. Second, He realized that the only way to grow in relationship with others is by leaving our comfortable confines and entering those of others (John 3:16). We see this best when God sent Christ into the world to dwell with us in the flesh, Immanuel. For us this happens when we force ourselves to slow down and take the time to truly sit down with those around us and not be in such a hurry to get to the next thing. Last-ly, God realized that to grow in relationship with us He had to put others before Himself. This is why we hear in Mark 10:45 that Christ “came not to be served, but to serve.” We serve our neighbors when we focus more on learning the stories of others than on sharing our story.
God grants us opportunities each and every day to grow in our relationship with others by acting upon these three things. The challenge for each of us is to not just know about them, but to act upon them. Therefore this
October we are setting aside time and space for people to once again realize they were made to be in relation-ships by connecting with and learning about others. There are a host of relational stewardship events which you can learn more about on page 7. In addition, opportunities continue to work side-by-side with others through the Rally Around Habitat for Humanity home build for Sundae and Darviel Johnson.
Already through the Habitat Build, disciples here at St. John’s like Carol Lange have been able to meet people who are not a part of the St. John’s community and invite them to church (and welcome them when they came). Other disciples like Mark and Jennifer Butler have cultivated deeper relationships with others in our community of faith by participating in their small group, Parenting the Early Years.
So how are you going to get Ready...Set...Grow into the relationships that God has created for you so that you may better know and share His love?
In Christ ,

Heartfelt letters, books, stickers, cards, and drawing & writing paper were all sent to a little boy in Tanzania who wrote back that it “feels nice to have people who love him.” Please sign up on the poster by Kathy’s office if you would like to sponsor Samson for one month. OUTREACH AND MISSION
Parish Nurse Ministry Immunization Clinic It’s that time of year for Flu Shots. Nellie Weitekamp will be giving immunizations on Saturday, October 3 from 4:30-5:00 p.m. and again Sunday, October 4 from 9:00-10:30 a.m. We will also be doing blood pressure checks on these dates.
Meals on Wheels Volunteers NeededThe Senior Services of Central Illinois has asked for help with the Meals on Wheels Program for the timeframe of September 28 through October 30. There are approximately 26 different routes that potentially serve 183 individuals during this time that need to be filled. ThanksgivingAgain this year we will have a Thanksgiving food collection for Grace Food Pantry. On the weekend of October 31 and November 1 grocery bags will be handed out after Church and Sunday School. Donations will be received on November 7 & 8 and November 14 & 15. Your donations will be delivered to Grace Food Pantry on November 17 in time to brighten the Thanksgiving tables of those in need. You have time to look for bargains and check the sales. While there will be a list of suggested items attached to your grocery bag, anything is welcome. We just missed the goal last year, so lets see if we can beat the total of 3,000 items that we collected in 2013!
Storybook by Normajean SandersFor many years now, St. John’s has been a strong supporter of LSSI’s Storybook Project. The project continues to thrive and is growing with the help of wonderful people like you. In the last fiscal year that ended June 30, we mailed 4,703 packages, held 102 events, and parents reported that their 7,153 children benefitted from storybook!! At Lincoln, where we go monthly, volunteers sent 620 of those packages, held 11 events, and were told by the men that their 971 children benefitted.
We hear from one incarcerated parent: “I don’t see my son that much, so it’s truly a blessing to be able to send him something he can hear my voice on.”
To those of you who donate books regularly, there have been some changes. The only hard backed books we can accept are The Golden Books and Dr. Seuss. All the rest of the books have to be soft back books. So that we can keep the program going and growing, we need help from all of you. Our needs are CD’s and the jacket they go into, envelopes, volunteers, and cash to pay for the postage to mail the books.
Just this month a young man came into pick out a book for his 5-year-old son. It was his first time coming to storybook and he asked me if it would be alright to send the book to his son via a case worker. “Of course,” I said. He then told me how much this means to his son and him. The Storybook Project is a blessing!!! Please help us continue to make it happen. For more information, contact the church or Normajean Sanders at 726.5230.

ELCA World Hunger Walk for Water! The global water crisis doesn’t always make headlines. But the truth is that it claims more lives each year than war. Globally, 1.8 billion people — that’s about one out of every four people in our world today - drink from contaminated water sources. Unsafe water leads to illnesses that claim the lives of 840,000 people each year, almost half of whom are children under the age of 5.
This year, ELCA youth will join together for ELCA World Hunger’s Walk for Water. The goal is to raise $500,000 for ELCA World Hunger-supported water projects around the world. Through these gifts, local communities will be equipped to provide water for drinking and growing crops, sanitation and hygiene, as well as ongoing health education, training and maintenance. Learn more about the water crisis and ELCA World Hunger’s efforts at www.ELCA.org/walk4water.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is one of the largest Christian denominations in the United States with more than 3.8 million members in 10,000 congregations across the United States, Caribbean, and U.S Virgin Islands. Known as the church of “God’s work. Our hands,” the ELCA emphasizes the saving grace of God through Jesus Christ. We are a church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work. ELCA World Hunger’s Walk for Water is a way for youth to take a stand against global poverty by starting with one of the world’s greatest needs: water. Together, we accomplish much more than we ever could alone.

Stewardship is, First and Foremost, about RELATIONSHIPIt is about money, but … it’s not all about money. At its heart, Christian stewardship is really about relationship – our relationship with Christ, our relationship with one another, and our relationship with the community. Zacchaeus is a great example of true Christian stewardship. As a result of his new relationship with Christ, Zacchaeus is moved to share half of his possessions with the poor (relationship with the community) and to pay back (with interest!) all those who he had defrauded (relationship with one another). True Christian stewardship flows out of the loving relationship we have with Christ and the loving relationships Christ frees us to share with others.
Here at St. John’s, we believe that the more we grow in our relationships with Christ, with each other, and with the community, the more we will grow in our generosity as well. During the month of October, everyone in the congregation is asked to attend at least one of the fun, relationship, stewardship events that are planned (see page 7).
These events are designed to help us grow in relationship with one another even as we learn how we are being called to grow our generosity for the sake of Christ’s mission and ministry in this place. Please come and be a part. Zacchaeus’ life was changed. Maybe yours will be as well.
STEWARDSHIP
“Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, ‘Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much’” (Luke 19:8).
