What are the chances of getting a rela- tively uninterrupted 10 weeks this term I wonder... School Update School Fees: Due to the unprecedented interruptions to this year, as a once off, Bartle Frere SS will not be invoicing parents for their book packs this year. Uniforms: These have been ordered and should arrive by the end of August! The P&C have generously volunteered to purchase one shirt for every child this year and addi- tional shirts will be on sale from the front of- fice at a cost of $30. Adult shirts will also be available for $35. We cant wait to get them and see our students proudly wearing our new school uniform! Student Code of Conduct: Every Queensland state school is required to now have a Stu- dent Code of Conduct. This is the schools behaviour policy, with information about school rules, consequences and processes for addressing bullying and the use of tech- nology. From 2020, the Student Code of Con- duct replaces the Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students. The Student Code of Con- duct is developed in consultation with each local school community, is published on the school website and provided to every student and family upon enrolment. The BFSS Draft Student Code of Conduct will be available early in Term 3 to any members of our school community that would like to provide feed- back. Please e-mail [email protected] if you would like to be involved in this process. 2020 Holloways Beach Camp: Due to COVID-19 closures in Term 2, our scheduled camp was sadly cancelled. In lieu of that booking, Holloways Beach Environmental Education Centre have been able to squeeze us in for a one day excursion. We have elected to have a day of boating activities which entails a study of the estuary by boat on Richters Creek, Thomatis Creek and the Barron River and fo- cus on the sustainability aspect of the curriculum and the human impacts on the environment. Explicit Improvement Agenda Our previous newsletters have spoken about how, every year, the school chooses 1 or 2 areas to really narrow our focus on in order to achieve improvement in line with school needs, regional and state directions. This year, our 2 areas to focus on our the improvement of reading in the P-2 years and the implementation of a cluster modera-tion cycle. The next part of the Big 6 to investigate is Concepts of Print. This aspect focusses on the basic un-derstandings of reading such as how books work. Eg read-ing left to right, understanding words have a consistent message, moving from one line to the next, the different parts of books, etc all the way along to tables of contents, index pages, why bold print or italics are used for the upper grades. Our staff are constantly modelling these skills and explicitly explaining them to our students to show children how reading “works”. PBL and Students of the Week Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) provides the framework for a whole school evidence-based approach to behaviour support. PBL recognises that schools need to teach the behaviours needed for success at school and be-yond. School-wide PBL can be described as the consistent implementation of proactive, research-informed practices for classroom management. The focus for this fortnight has been “Be safe and wear your shoes at all times”. You may see the following posters around our classroom to remind students of why we should have shoes on at all times! Term 2 Week 6: Safe Student of the Week: Luke Respectful Student of the Week: William B Learner of the Week: Eli Our Gotcha Rewards Party will be scheduled towards the end of Term 3. If you have any ideas on what we could do for those students who reach their Gotcha tick-et goals, please communicate them to our student leadership team. Celebrations Happiest of birthdays to our illustrious school captain Joshua for July 18! We know it was weekend but we hope you had a fantastic time! Happy birthday to our creative Music Teacher/school photographer Mrs Rees for July 16! Congratulations Mrs Zappala for becoming a Nanna again in the holidays! What a lucky baby boy to have you and Sam to dote on him! Welcome to our new casual Groundskeeper Jodie! Jodie is joining us after years of mak-ing Mirriwinni SS look amazing and we’re very confident we can work her same magic with BFSS. Welcome aboard Jodie! Container Refund Scheme

Thanks once again to FNQ Roofing Solutions for their generous donation late last term! We continue to be busy collecting containers! Please bring your re-cyclable plastic, aluminium and glass bottles and cans to school for collection OR drop your containers to your nearest container collection point and quote the BARTLE FRERE STATE SCHOOL refund code: C10006696. When you quote this code, the proceeds of your recycling will be donated to the Bartle Frere State School P&C.

Stay safe everyone! Chris Lees
