Principal’s Report CLASS REP PROGRAM

I would like to begin my final newsletter for the year by recognising the wonderful

work of our parents who have enthusiastically undertaken the role of class reps

throughout 2016.

This unique platform helps to establish a robust educational link between the

school and families, so that a strong and purposeful framework of support is

established for all students. We hope the distribution of the eNews each fortnight

has facilitated lots of discussion at home about school and our learning

programs, as well as strengthening your connectedness to the school.

Our class reps have contributed many hours to this important role throughout the

year and we are extremely grateful for all of their efforts to enhance the school’s

communication processes. Further thanks also to Julie Noonan and Toni

Burton, who have once again done a great job in coordinating this platform.

STUDENT REPORTS

We have our fingers crossed that the upload of our student 2016 December

Reports onto Compass will go smoothly on Friday afternoon. We will send out

an SMS to confirm their availability.

Please note that the school will not be providing printed copies of these reports.

If you have any issues accessing the reports on Compass, please don’t hesitate

to make contact with the main office on 93975722.

TRANSITION PROGRAM – MEET THE TEACHER

The final stage of our transition program will be undertaken on Friday 16th

December with all new and existing students meeting their teacher for 2017 in

their designated classroom with their fellow classmates for next year. No doubt

you will hear about all of this when your children arrive home on Friday

afternoon!

Please be assured that each child’s placement has been very carefully

considered. Like you, we want the best for all of our students again in 2017 and

through their considered class placement we aim to establish the learning

FAREWELLS

As we wrap up the 2016 academic year, we will sadly say goodbye to many families leaving the school. We hope

that you will all fondly remember your Willy North days!

This year, we sadly have a long standing member of the staff also leaving us – Annemarie Honeybone. We

congratulate Annemarie on her successful appointment to Reservoir West PS, (which is five minutes around the

corner from home for Annemarie!). Whilst the decision to leave Willy North has been a tough one, I’m sure we

can all appreciate the added benefits of not having to traverse the perils of the city traffic each day!

Annemarie is an outstanding teacher, who has a genuine love for her students. She has been a dedicated and

supportive staff member over the years. We are certainly going to miss her presence and her witty charm. On

behalf of the school community, we deeply thank Annemarie for her enduring commitment to school over the

years and we all wish her well for many happy years of teaching at her new school.

CLASSROOM & LIBRARY BOOKS

We would be grateful if you could scout around the bedrooms and the house over the next few days to ensure that

all classroom and library books have been returned to the school. Our annual stock take of books is almost

complete. We invest heavily each year in the books that are available for students to read and take home. Your

ongoing support with our books is greatly appreciated.

GREEN READING SATCHELS

When our students meet their new teachers on Friday, they will also hand over their internal school files to their

new teacher. This has important work samples, assessments etc; that will help their new teacher ascertain their

achievement levels and learning journey over the years. During this transition session, the students in our junior

and middle classes also take their green reading satchels with them to hand over to their new teacher. If your

child’s reading satchel is still at home, we would be grateful if you could send this to school over the next few

days.

SOCIAL NIGHT PROCEEDS

I’m delighted to confirm that the proceeds ($8,293) from the Social Night held in August this year are going

towards the purchase of a demountable stage for our Gym. The new stage will be purchased early next year.

Thank you again to the organizers, attendees and sponsors of this wonderful event – what a terrific outcome for

parents and students!

BOOK PACK DAY

For all families that will have students on Years 3 – 6 in 2017, don’t forget that Wednesday 25th January has been

designated as the day for the collection of student Book Packs. We will issue an SMS reminder early next year for

your convenience.

PRINCIPAL REFLECTIONS & THANKS

As another school year draws to an end, I continue to reflect on how fortunate I am to lead such a dynamic,

inclusive and vibrant learning community.

I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank our hard working teachers and our Education Support staff,

for the extra yards they put in every day of the school year to nurture and support the individual needs of all of our

students. How exciting it was to have the daily efforts of all staff recognised this year with the Victorian Education

Excellence Award!

Throughout 2016, I have continued to be wonderfully supported by a fantastic office team, who all help to keep me

so organised! My sincere thanks to Judy Coleman (reception), Debbie Dorgan (Business Manager) and Belinda

Gill (Communications Officer) who are a pleasure to work with every day. They have even had to endure a recent

office rearrangement to accommodate our second Assistant Principal next year!

I would also like to thank the highly talented members of the school leader team for their unequivocal support

throughout the year. It has been a big year for the school as we undertook a whole school review and developed a

new Strategic Plan 2017 – 2020. As a high performing school I can’t thank our leaders enough for the countless

Page 3: Newsletter - willynthps.vic.edu.au · Attendance—gill.belinda.a@edumail.vic.gov.au Dates to Remember 2016 2016 Term Dates ... congratulate Annemarie on her successful appointment

hours they have put into supporting the administrative and educational platforms of the school. Many thanks to

Wendy Emin, Crissy Samaras, Giorgia Moss, Sarah Nobbs, Melissa Ziebowski and Sue Peterson.

Behind the scenes, we have continued to be highly supported by Win Brown (Grounds person) and Keith Field

(Maintenance). I thank Win and Keith for facilitating such a high level of school presentation.

To our wonderful parents and broader school community, my deepest thanks for your support throughout 2016. It

has been a year of many achievements of which we can all take enormous pride in. We enter into next year with

a new Strategic Plan and some reframed directions for the school’s future priorities, which aim to make our

provision for our students stronger and our school even greater. We look forward to our strong partnership with

all families again in 2017.

I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and I hope that the time you spend with the family over the

coming weeks is filled with much happiness and joy.

Enjoy the break

eSmart School Through lots of hard work over the last few years, Williamstown North Primary School is very proud to announce that we have achieved status as an eSmart School! eSmart is an initiative of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation, a national charity committed to protecting children from violence and is a guiding framework for schools to manage Online Safety and wellbeing. This accreditation recognises how our teachers, students and the whole school community embrace the benefits of technology, whilst reducing our exposure

to cyberspace risks such as cyberbullying, identity theft, online sexual predation and accessing or sending inappropriate images and content. eSmart. Our work towards achieving eSmart status involved integrating online safety into our learning technologies policies, establishing clear procedures to deal with incidents, building teacher confidence in the planning and delivery of curriculum around the smart, safe and responsible use of technology.

Student Safety Please take the time to regularly remind your child/ren about safety, especially when going to

and from school. Here are the important points to mention:

Do not to talk to strangers and never accept a ride from a stranger, or accept lollies or gifts from a stranger.

Immediately report any issue or problem you may have when going to or from school, to your mum and dad, or to your teacher, the Principal, Assistant Principal or office staff.

Always get permission from mum or dad before going to play with a friend after school and always let mum and dad know where you will be and what time you will be home.

We advise that, wherever possible, children should travel to or from school with an adult or with their friends, rather than travel alone.

______________________________________________________________________________________________

Early Release All children collected from school before 3.30pm must be signed out at the Office. Parents will be handed an ‘Early Release Pass’ to hand to the supervising teacher. If a child is signed out at Recess or Lunch time, the Office staff will call the child to the Office and then ensure the Early Release Pass is given to the supervising teacher.

______________________________________________________________________________________________

Bikes & Scooters Many children ride bikes and scooters to school each day. All bikes and scooters must be locked up in either the Bike or Scooter Enclosure to prevent theft. Please ensure your child has a chain and a lock. All children who ride a bike or scooter must wear a helmet which is a requirement by the Government . The school regularly reminds all children about wearing helmets for their safety. All bikes, scooters, skateboards, ribstic and helmets must be labelled, with your child’s name and class. Children are reminded they must walk their bike, scooter, skateboard or ribstic to and from the school gates. No bikes are to be brought through the school

buildings and we request, where possible, that scooters are also not walked through the building.
