SATURDAY SAMPLER PROGRAM 2017 ~

“Hazel’s Diary Quilt” HOSTS ~ MARILYN & JERRY PETERSEN (& Assistant Lauren

Bauman!) What Is It? Saturday Sampler 2017 is here and this is your one and only chance to be part of this exciting12-month program for the year. About the Quilt: This year we are using the book, “ a SIMPLE life, Quilts Inspired by the 50’s” by Shelly Pagliai. Hazel’s Diary Quilt is a beautiful medallion quilt that features blocks that include both piecing and applique. This quilt chronicles the life of Shelly’s mother Hazel in the 50” from her freshman year in high school to the night before her wedding. The quilts and blocks are inspired by her mothers diary entries, and by that period of time in the early 1950’s when life seemed so much simpler. Our version Of this quilt features a variety of fabrics that result a beautiful rendition of this quilt. You just have to see the sample at the shop or check at our social media posts. (No, it is not fabrics from the 50’s)

For those that are inspired (and ambitious) there are an additional 8 projects in the book. They feature different layouts of the blocks, an embroidery project, etc. The book is included in the class fee. If you already own it, then consider gifting it to a friend. Sorry, there are no substitutions or returns.

Applique and Piecing: For those of you that are applique novices, never fear, Marilyn is here to help you step-by-step using the easy fusible raw edge method. Still not convinced, that is okay, you do not have to add the applique if you do not want to. The book shows the blocks completed sans applique. Our sample was completed using fused, raw-edge applique and the blanket-stitch (instructions provided at first meeting). There is plenty of fabric in the kit for those that would like to needle-turn or starch-turn applique pieces (instructions not provided). If you do want to complete using the fusible applique method, you will also need to purchase fusible web. We have available for purchase extra wide fusible web for this project as the frames require this size.

Made as shown, the quilt is 95” x 95”. The start up cost will include: book, fabric for blocks/appliques and the scrappy inner border inset. Our quilt is made with red and white check outer border rather than a scrappy outer border to make use of the extra red fabric from the scallop frames. YOU MUST POVIDE YOUR OWN white, grey and red background fabrics. However, we will have those fabrics available to pre-order at the time of class sign-up with the amount required and available at a 15% discount. We will be asking for a deposit to secure your order. We appreciate you supporting the shop when making these purchases. This Is How It Works: On the designated Saturday of each month, we open the shop before regular store hours. The block is introduced along with a short demonstration of a technique or tool that is used to make the block. If you make the block and bring it back the following month (no waiting 2 or 3 months allowed), then the fabric for the next block is free. Can’t make the block in time or make it to one of the meetings? Then, you must purchase the next block for $8.50. You must be present with block in hand at the one of the class sessions to get your next block free of charge - there are no exceptions!!!! You can attend either the 8:30 am or 9:15 am session.

We have limited the class to 100 people, so we will be handing out “priority” tickets (limit 2 per person) starting at 8:30 am on sign-up day, December 10th (first come, first served) which will guarantee your spot (if purchased on December 10th only). This means that you can get your priority ticket and come back later in the day, if desired, to sign-up for this program as well as other classes. You will be allowed to sign-up a maximum of one friend (you must have 2 priority tickets in hand). On-line registration is not available for this program. Sign-ups will be not taken for this program after 12/10. If any additional spaces still exist, they will be sold as Block-of-the-Months kits. Confident Beginner ~ $8.50 plus one time program fee of $40.00~ total of $48.50 due on sign-up day. This program starts in January and runs through December 2017.
