M y D e a r M e m b e r sI have so much to share with you. The last newsletter we printed and sent out was back in 2008. I am happy to announce we are bringing the news-letter back!

We tried to go to an e-newsletter and it didn’t give me the feedback I need to justify the work that goes into each one. I loved the responses and feedback I used to get with the printed newsletter.

The internet is filled with so much information, but I personally still value printed materials. Not to worry, we are mindful of the impact printing has on the earth so we are using green printing methods for our newsletter.

Our company has gone through some changes in the past few years. We have discontinued over 800 items and are now focusing on unique products of uncommon quality that are recommended by our nutrition advisory board.

One of the exciting new items I want to bring to your attention is Moringa. This is such a potent protein from a plant! S ay “good-bye” to tooth decay, gum disease, bad breath, loose teeth, bleeding, and receding gums, and say “hello” to a bright white smile

and healthy pink gums. How is this possible? With oil pulling! Never heard of it? Well, it’s time you had.

Oil pulling is simple. Put a spoonful of oil into your mouth and swish it around for 15 to 20 minutes. That may sound like a long time, but if you involve yourself with other things, such as preparing breakfast or reading the newspaper, time flies by quickly. The oil is “worked” in the mouth by pushing, pulling, and sucking it through the teeth. As you work the oil, it sucks up bacteria, toxins, pus, and mucous. Don’t swallow it! Spit it out, and then rinse your mouth with water.

After eating, brush and floss your teeth as you normally do. Oil pulling can be done one to three times per day, on an empty sto-mach; just before meals are good times. If you have good dental health, one time a day should be adequate; but, if you have any oral issues, then two to three times a day is recommended.

We have billions of bacteria living in our mouths, many of which produce toxins as by-products that damage the teeth and irritate the gums, causing inflammation and bleeding. An overgrowth of bacteria leads to tooth decay and gum disease and, eventually, tooth loss. Discolored teeth, plaque (bacteria colonies), tarter (calcified plaque), cavities, bleeding gums, sen- sitive teeth, and chronic bad breath are all signs of an overgrowth.

Despite regular brushing, flossing, and the use of antiseptic mouthwashes, tooth decay and gum disease are major health problems. According to a recent study in the British medical journal The Lancet, gum disease affects up to 90 percent of the population.

Data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Pre-vention (CDC) shows that by the time you reach the age of 65, your chances of having lost all of your teeth are one out of three!

Teeth are meant to last a lifetime, and they will if you take care of them. For most people, regular brushing and flossing isn’t enough. Oil pulling, however, offers you a way of protecting your teeth and gums so that they remain healthy for a lifetime.

Studies show that oil pulling at least once a day can signifi- cantly reduce dental plaque and gingivitis (i.e., gum disease). Antiseptic mouthwashes can reduce plaque by 23 percent and gingivitis by about 13 percent. Tooth brushing reduces plaque by 19 percent and gingivitis by 16 percent. Oil pulling beats them both. Oil pulling reduces plaque by as much as 30 percent and gingivitis by an amazing 60 percent!

Oil pulling isn’t only good at preventing oral infections but can actively fight them as well. The oil pulls the infection (bacteria, toxins, and pus) out of the tissues, allowing the body to heal itself. Inflammation is quieted, gums stop bleeding, loose

teeth tighten, and pain and sensitivity vanish. Teeth become whiter, and gums become pinker and healthier looking.

Chronic bad breath is a sign that the mouth is overrun by potentially harmful bacteria. Brushing and antiseptic mouth- washes provide only temporary relief and often only mask the odor. Oil pulling puts a quick end to bad breath. For that reason alone, oil pulling is enormously useful. If you know someone who could benefit from having fresher breath, tell him or her how oil pulling can help. If you have to be around them frequently, you will be grateful you did.

For some people, the results from oil pulling are almost immediate, while for others, the battle lasts longer. The reason for this is not only due to the amount of bacteria in the mouth but to the type as well. Some people have a larger number of the more troublesome microbes, in- cluding virus and fungi. Our diet plays a very important role in determining the microbial populations growing in our mouths. Sugar, refined carbohydrates, and overly processed foods contribute to an imbalance in our oral flora.

The simple oil pulling procedure described here is a good start, but for optimal oral health you also need a good diet, one rich in whole foods. The details of the oil pulling process, along with dietary recommenda- tions, aids for healing chronic infections, and a procedure for detoxing heavy metals for those who have amalgam (mercury)

T here is a lot of controversy and confusion about cod liver oil. Alison Birks, MS, AHG, CNS is a nutritionist and researcher who has looked

into the issue of cod liver oil, fermented and otherwise. She has written an article for us that I have found very helpful in clarifying the confusion. We hope you will find it interesting and useful.

Is fermented cod liver oil (CLO) a health food? Can fermented CLO provide crucial nutrients in a manner compatible with traditional diets? Or is fermented CLO (as some critics claim), an invention that is based on myth or marketing hype? Or worse, is fermented CLO a putrid by-product of the “rotting process”? Fermented cod liver oil is a natural product that is made by the prolonged soaking of wild cod livers in brine, allowing the liver to naturally ferment, then draining off the resulting oil that accumulates on the top. Fermentation is an ancient practice that has been used worldwide to adequately preserve food (including meat and fish) when other methods of preservation have failed.

Submerged Culture Fermentation

During the process of preparing cod liver oil by fermentation, salt tolerant, lactic acid-producing bacteria (LAB) ferment the fish and yield various components in the final product. This allows liver glycogen to be broken down by microorganisms to yield lactic acid (which acts to further preserve the food product). In addition, proteins are degraded into free amino acids as well as biogenic amines and various flavor/aroma compounds; fats are broken down into free fatty acids, and these can be further oxidized into other flavor/aroma compounds.

Enhanced Vitamin Content, Natural Forms of Vitamins

In general, the process of fermentation enhances the nutrient composition of the final product. For example, in a comparison study of fermented versus non-fermented garlic, fermented garlic was shown to contain more vitamin

E, B2, and amino acids than an unfermented form. Fermentation also increased the important antioxidant SOD (Superoxide dismutase) enzyme activity of garlic by more than 13 times that of the unfermented form.

Some of the naturally occurring nutrients that are enhanced during the fermentation process include the fat-soluble vitamins A, D and K. Non-essential nutrients such as non-vitamin K Quinones may also be increased. Because the fermentation processing method naturally increases the vitamin content of the oil, no synthetic antioxidants are added to the oil. Green Pasture™ Fermented CLO is also free of synthetic vitamins that many find objectionable.

Natural Fats: Enhanced Bioavailability

In the process of cod liver fermentation, it is likely that the resulting oil exists in both natural triglyceride and in free fatty acid form. Significantly, both intact triglyceride and free fatty acid forms are equally well absorbed and are highly bioavailable to the human body. Both of these natural forms are superior to synthetic ethyl ester forms. The ethyl ester form is made by reacting free fatty acids with ethanol (alcohol) in order to concentrate the EPA and DHA to levels greater than that found naturally in fish. This process is called molecular

distillation and the resulting product is completely synthetic. Please note that most of the commercially available fish oil, including CLO, is the synthetic EE form. Fermented CLO provides a natural form of important omega-3 fatty acids.

Reduced Toxicity

In general, the process of fermentation has been shown to reduce toxic components in food. In one dramatic example, a recent study showed that the deadly nerve toxin in “fugu” or puffer fish, (terodotoxin) was virtually eliminated by prolonged fermentation, and that it yielded a non-toxic, edible food product. It is also well established that anti-nutrients in plant foods are degraded during fermentation. Based on these assumptions, fermented CLO quite possibly may have less naturally present toxins than other forms of CLO.

Putrefaction versus Fermentation

Putrefaction or “rotting” is very differ-ent from lactic acid fermentation. The formation of putrescine and cadaverine are biomarkers for incomplete lactic acid fermentation. Both are foul-smell-

ing, toxic biogenic amines produced during putrefaction and both are com-ponents formed during decomposition of the proteins in rotting meats through anaerobic bacterial action. Green Pas-ture™ Fermented CLO has repeatedly tested free of these undesirable bio-genic amines.

Summary

Fermented cod liver oil is a traditional food that delivers natural forms of important fat-soluble vitamins, such as vitamins A, D and K. The fermentation process enhances the nutrient content, which can vary widely from batch to batch. Fermented CLO also provides essential omega-3 fats in their most bioavailable forms. It is also likely that Fermented CLO is naturally lower in to- xins than its unfermented counterparts.

What are EMF’s?

T here are many names for EMF’s such as electromagnetic fields, electromagnetic radiation, electromagnetic frequency, and electromagnetic energy. Some of these

are natural and some are not.

Those that are found in our environment – the earth, the sun, and ionosphere, are all natural sources of EMF’s. Natural EMF’s are organic, as we are organic. Humans have experienced centuries of exposure to natural EMF’s and because they are organic they flow through our bodies causing no harm.

We find artificial EMF’s in our home, baby monitors, school, workplace, vehicle, shopping malls, and our backyard that are not from natural sources; these sources are manmade. How Have EMF’s Changed through the Years?

The study of harmful effects of EMF’s started many years ago. The first scientific study to attract serious interest and attention was done in 1979, by Nancy Wertheimer. She was looking for possible causes for a number of childhood leukemia cases in the Denver area. It was found that children with leukemia were more than twice as likely to have lived in homes near high current power lines, where consequently the electromagnetic fields were stronger.

From the time of that research, there have been many studies on the effects of EMF’s to humans. But subsequently, we, as a human culture, have increased our level of exposures to manmade EMF’s with new technologies and the forward trends in our lifestyles. Elec- trical wiring brought our first home ex-posure, then telephone wires, cordless phones, home computers, microwaves, cell phones, increased amounts of other electrical devices, laptops, notebooks, E-readers, and more! In the environment outside our homes there have been increases in x-ray use, hospital technology, grocery scanners, Smart Meters, and the list goes on to include any and all wireless technology.

In order to meet the de-mands of the transition to higher levels of tech-nology, the EMF’s have grown in intensity and in frequency. Low level EMF’s such as what is

given off by our electrical wiring, elec- trical appliances, and air conditioning units have been shown to increase our body’s stress levels and alter the cells’ immune defenses which erode our immune system over time.

The higher frequency EMF’s developed in the last few years to meet our tech-nological needs, have all of that, and more! Multitudes of research have shown that cellphones are dangerous, even to the point of causing brain da- mage and other catastrophic illnesses, diseases, or syndromes.

What Specific Effects do EMF’s have on Our Bodies?

Independent research has shown that cellphone radiation will also negatively affect our DNA structures. Man-made EMF’s have a chaotic energy and fre-quency that is different than natural EMF’s, and can disrupt or distort orga- nic energy patterns. dous, inflicting damage to human DNA, disrupting ionic conductances, and weakening cellular metabolism.

The latest studies confirm what the cellular phone corporations do not want you to know. Even casual use of a cellular phone can damage the DNA in sensitive areas of your brain. A landmark study conducted by Dr. Henry Lai of the University of Washington showed that even at low levels, exposure to radio frequency electromagnetic fields and radio frequencies (EMF/RF) caused DNA damage to brain cells of rats, resulting in loss of short and long-term memory and slower learning. A study done at Penn State University concluded that EMF exposure produced no effect for the “first few minutes, . . . then a cascade of microbial destruction occurs.” The effect of this damage has been linked to cancer, memory loss and even sterility.

I n all my years of practicing medi- cine, I have yet to see one item provide

such miraculous effects on the body as iodine does. In this article, I will show you the wonders of iodine and why you need to take a close look at your supplement regimen to ensure you are getting enough iodine daily.

There are so many myths about iodine, but I will focus on two main myths pro-pagated by many conventional doctors. Myth No. 1 is that we get enough iodine in salt, and Myth No. 2, that taking iodine as a supplement will cause or worsen thyroid disorders.

Because of these myths, people have the mistaken idea that iodine is a toxic substance that needs to be avoided.

How prevalent are these myths? Let me share with you an e-mail that was forwarded to me, originally sent by an endocrinologist in the United States.

“We only see iodine deficiency in Third World countries. We have never seen it here in my past eight years as a physician and the experience of other endocrino-logists that I know as well. So, I don’t trust books and information that are out there. Our salt is iodine fortified, so just eating a regular diet, we get about 10 to 20 times the recommended amount of iodine in the diet.”

Unfortunately, this is the prevailing opi- nion of most endocrinologists and of mainstream doctors. The reason this doc- tor has not seen iodine deficiency in eight years is that he has not tested for it. And, of course, he also mentions the salt myth.

The iodization of salt was hailed as the first public health miracle. However, iodized salt is inadequate to supply the body’s need for iodine, particularly in our toxic environment.

miniscule amount of iodine found in it falls far short of the amount necessary for promoting optimal thyroid function. Furthermore, refined salt fails to provide enough iodine for the rest of the body’s needs.

Remember, the RDA was set to prevent goiter in the vast majority of people. The average American takes in 4 grams to 10 grams of refined salt per day. That’s more than the recommended daily allowance. So, why don’t we get enough iodine from salt?

Research shows that just 10 percent of iodine in salt is bioavailable, that is, completely absorbed by your body.

That means that iodized salt provides somewhere between 30 to 77μg a day — markedly below the recommended amount.

Additionally, approximately 70 percent of the salt used by commercial industry in the U.S. is not iodized salt.

Not only is iodized salt a poor source of

iodine, but we have been conditioned to avoid salt by the media and by mainstream medicine. Presently, less than half of U.S. households use salt. As a result, iodine levels have fallen by more than half over the last 30 years, reports the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey form the Centers for Disease Control. This is a recipe for making a whole population iodine-deficient. That is exactly what has happened in the United States and many other Western countries.

If Myth No. 2 were correct — taking iodine will cause thyroid disorders — declining iodine levels would help prevent thyroid disease. Yet this has not been the case.

As iodine levels have fallen over 50% during the last 40 years, thyroid dis- orders, including hypothyroidism, Ha- shimoto’s disease, Graves’ disease and

thyroid cancer, have been increas- ing at near epidemic rates. We would expect the opposite to occur — thyroid illnesses on the decline — if iodine were the cause. In fact, it is impossible to ex- perimentally induce autoimmune thyroid disorders in animals unless the animals are iodine-deficient.

After twenty years of practicing medi- cine, I can state that it is impossible to treat thyroid illness if there is an inade- quate level of iodine in the body.

The largest amounts of iodine occur in the oceans. Sea vegetables and ocean fish contain large amounts of iodine and are the foods that provide the most usable iodine for the body. Diets lacking in seafood can predispose one to iodine deficiency.

The RDA for iodine (150 μg/day) is inade- quate to supply the body’s need for iodine. When you couple in the increa-sing exposure to toxic halides bromine,

fluoride, and chlorine derivatives, our iodine requirements have increased over the years. My experience has shown that iodine in doses ranging from 6-50mg/day is adequate to provide iodine for the vast majority of the popu-lation. Finally, it is important to use the right kind of salt — unrefined salt.

The conveyor belt is also a vital component of the global ocean nutrient and carbon dioxide cycles. Warm sur-face waters are depleted of nutrients and carbon dioxide, but they are enriched again as they travel through the conveyor belt as deep or bottom layers. The base of the world’s food chain depends on the cool, nutrient-rich waters that support the growth of algae and seaweed.

Growing one of the strongest natural superfoods has not been a easy

task, but it has been the best experience ever! Mastering the art of producing the highest quality Moringa has been a constant learning curve; I've been fortunate to meet the right people all along this journey.

When my partner told me we need to bring this ancient “miracle tree” Moringa powder here into the new world, I asked “What is this Moringa powder?” So, of course I researched for days which turned into months and I continue researching not just on Moringa, but also on these other amazing tropical superfoods such as Baobab, sorghum, and bissap, which now grow all around our farm.

But today, I am only going to talk to you about Moringa and little bit of the bumpy journey… Bumpy, well, because it is a bumpy ride out to the farm, but the ride is well worth it. The area is all untouched agriculture land with thousands of baobab trees and this was important to us because Baobab only grows on soil with the highest tenacity of calcium.

From first falling under the charm of this high mineral land and numerous meetings with the rural communities we have since built wells and water towers, and installed drip ir-rigation. Ideally we want to have a model plan of sustainable agriculture practices for all other growers in the area.

We did not aggressively look for this land; it kind of just found us and from there things got better. Back when I first started researching Moringa, I learned of a man named Dr. Fuglie. I feel he is the reason we have the knowledge we have of Moringa today. I learned so much from him and his intensive Moringa project in Senegal, which he used as a tool to fight malnutrition. He was a great advocate that Senegal is one of the greatest places to grow Moringa, due to several favorable growing conditions for tropical crops; he shared the same opinions as David Wolfe that Senegal’s high selenium level in soil is good to fight cancer; he also believed that climate and soil in the region provide critical enzymes for nutritional and superior flavor for taste (I still think about this every time I taste one of my favorite delicious Senegal popular fruits: mangoes, papayas or ditakh).

Does it get better? Yes! During my research, I came across a university that

was developing machinery. We contac-ted them, and the Penn State engineering department came out the next year deli- vering our first prototype depulping machine. They came out again this year of March 2014 to deliver the second-generation machine. One of the most vital parts of the development of quality pro-duct was to develop our plans to build a GMP facility for consistent quality products.

So why Moringa? Moringa powder is a green superfood. One of the most nutritious and amazing foods on the pla- net, raw Moringa powder comes from the dried leaves of the Moringa Oleifera tree. This powerful food is used in West Africa to fight malnutrition, and is recom-mended to the people there by the World Health Organization because of its in-credibly high nutrient content. Moringa is also known as the “Giving Tree” as it is a perennial tree — multiple harvests are possible each year.
