Are we having fun yet? With 2/3rds of 2017 over and the last rose of summer in front of us, I hope that you’ve been having fun - enjoying life!!

PACE/PACENET with Medicare Part D is now called PACE Plus Medicare. This means cardholders may enjoy the best benefits both programs have to offer. If you have a Medicare Part D prescription plan, and Pace, show both cards when you go to the pharmacy. Should your card be turned down, immediately have the pharmacist contact the PACE program. You should remain there until it is resolved. Pennsylvania continues to offer one of the most generous prescription plans for seniors in the country. The PACEplus program is here to stay. Another plan for Seniors is the Property Tax/Rent Rebate program. Applications based on your 2016 income have been extended to 12/31/17. Rent Rebate income limits remain at $15,000 and Tax Rebate household income limits are $35,000, as shown on the table. The applications already filed for rebates for property taxes and rent paid during 2016 are now in process for distribution.

Getting or know someone who is ready to collect Social Security? Plan now to come to the Medicare 101 class on Monday, September 18th at 12:45pm or Monday, October 9th at 7:00pm. We will have information and resources available to help you transition to the world of Social Security. Many of the programs available are governed by dates and you don’t want to fall into lapses of time that cost you penalties and/or no coverage. Ignorance may be bliss, but is also expensive!!

You can now apply for Retirement or Disability benefits, get a replacement Medicare card, request a benefit statement, and change your address online. Just go to www.socialsecurity.gov Stop by if you need help and Colleen or I can help you get online. It’s easy and secure.

Open enrollment for Medicare Part D plans begins Oct. 15th. You need to check out your options, call for an appointment. The plan you have now may be changing fees, formularies and/or deductibles. December 8th will be too late to change. I’m starting to take appointments now starting October 16th. Don’t wait or take the chance that your plan will be “OK” next year! As some of you found out the hard way, prices & coverage do change from year to year. Doesn't cost anything to check it out!

Regarding the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare as many refer to it, we are doing our best at finding out areas that apply to seniors. Most that are on Medicare will not see any differences, but those not eligible for Medicare yet or spouses of retirees not on Medicare will have some options with the insurance exchanges. Open Enrollment for these plans begins October 1st. We will do our best to assist you with this offering.

As you can see, time marches on. Things change, programs change, people change, but the Center is here for you to help you enjoy your senior years! Call if you have any questions. Have a great September. Take time to smell the leaves burning, take a walk, & enjoy the beautiful weather.

The Senior Voice Page 10 Adults Need Vaccines, Too

Your need for vaccines doesn’t end when you become an adult. People’s immune systems can become weaker with age, which places older adults at increased risk for infectious diseases, which can result in complications and death. Regardless of age, we ALL need vaccines to protect against serious, and sometimes deadly, diseases. Protection from vaccines you received as a child can wear off over time, and you may be at risk for new and different diseases.

The specific vaccines you need as an adult are determined by your age, job, lifestyle, health conditions, where you travel, and which vaccines you have received in the past. Throughout your adult life, vaccines are recommended to get and maintain protection against diseases:

Seasonal Flu Pertussis (whooping cough) Tetanus and diphtheria (every 10 years Shingles (for adults 60 and older) Pneumonia.

Other vaccines you may need include those that protect against Human papillomavirus (can cause cancer), meningitis, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, chickenpox, measles, mumps, and rubella.

Take this quiz (http://www2.cdc.gov/nip/adultImmSched/) to determine which vaccines may be recommended for you and follow up with your doctor.

Adults can get vaccines also at pharmacies, community health departments, travel medicine clinics. To find a place near you to get a vaccine, visit: HealthMap Vaccine Finder (http://vaccine.healthmap.org) Most health insurance plans cover recommended vaccines. Check with your insurance provider for details. If you do not have health insurance, follow up with your local health department for assistance.

FLU &

PNEUMONIA VACCINES

The Oxford Walgreens is pleased to offer

Influenza (Flu) & Pneumococcal (Pneumonia)

Vaccines on

Thursday, September 14, 2017

Walk-in (no appointment necessary)

9:00am-12:00pm

Citizens ages 65 and older are at increased risk of developing serious illness, complications and death if flu is contracted. A person’s immunity declines in the year following immunization, therefore everyone needs a flu shot annually. Standard Flu Vaccine & High Dose Flu Vaccines available. Walgreens will not be able to immunize anyone allergic to eggs, latex, gelatin or thimersal and anyone with an adverse reaction to a prior immunization. Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs usually caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi or other organisms. Elderly people are more susceptible to pneumonia. Experts recommend getting your first dose when you are in your 50s and your second dose at age 65, and then a new dose should be administered every five years. The vaccines are free for clients with Medicare Part B. Clients are asked to present all insurance cards. Insurances accepted are Medicare and most Major Medical Supplements.

Slow Down: Back to School Means Sharing the Road School days bring congestion: Yellow school buses are picking up their charges, kids on bikes are hurrying to get to school before the bell rings, harried parents are trying to drop their kids off before work. It's never more important for drivers to slow down and pay attention than when kids are present – especially before and after school.

Federal Trade Commission - Tech Support Scams

Some scammers call and claim to be computer techs associated with well-known companies like Microsoft or Apple. Other scammers send pop-up messages that warn about computer problems. They say they’ve detected viruses or other malware on your computer. They claim to be “tech support” and will ask you to give them remote access to your computer. Eventually, they’ll diagnose a non-existent problem and ask you to pay for unnecessary – or even harmful – services.

If you get an unexpected pop-up, call, spam email or other urgent message about problems with your computer, stop. Don’t click on any links, don’t give control of your computer and don’t send any money.

Please visit this website (https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0346-tech-support-scams) for more information on how the scam works, if you get a call or pop-up, if you were scammed, refund scams and how to report scams. Copies of this article will also be available here at the center at the Hostess Desk. In addition, if you have any questions, feel you have been scammed or not sure if your computer or other devices have been compromised, please stop in to one of the Tech Help/Q&A’s and I will be happy to help you.
