Class Five On Thursday years 4, 5 and 6 went to Our Lady and St Benedict’s in Wootton Wawen to rehearse for next week’s carol service. The children needed to get used to the acoustics of a bigger room and practise singing with the amplifier. The service is at 6pm in church on Tuesday and everyone is welcome. Class Four Class 4 has been using their knowledge of electrical circuits to create an interactive snowman with flashing eyes and a spinning bow tie. Class Three We had great fun building our own type of transport out of junk modelling. We had super, creative ideas as we drew our own designs and thought about what materials we would like to use before creating it. Class Two We have been learning all about Admiral Nelson. We researched why there was a statue of him in London. We role-played the Battle of Trafalgar. Class One We have been exploring teen numbers and the place value of each number. We worked as a class to make a numberline to twenty using Numicon tiles. S T . M ARY S H ENLEY Newsletter – 15.12.17

Saxophone The saxophone assembly for children in Class 5, which had to be postponed due to the school closure on Tuesday, has been rearranged for Tuesday 9th January 2018 at 2.40pm. Everyone is welcome. Punctuality Due to the adverse weather conditions and in particular the very slippy pavements, no-one who arrived late this week has been given a late mark. Normal service will resume next week so please make every effort to arrive on time. Keith Thank you very much to everyone who contributed to the collection for Keith. Thanks to your generosity, we raised nearly £60, which along with Henley Primary’s collection has been used to purchase vouchers. Pantomime The deadline for paying for the pantomime is Monday 18th December. Please pay £8.50 in ParentPay before then.

Page 3 – School news Advent Mass

On Monday 4th December we had a mass in school to celebrate the start of Advent. Children who are taking their First Holy Communion and Confirmation in 2018 did all of the readings and the offertory. Lorcan in Reception lit the first advent candle and Father Damian gave a lovely homily as always, getting the children excited that as well as Father Christmas, Jesus is coming.

Page 4 – School news A Miracle in Town

Last week we had the first two (of six) Christmas performances. The focus started with the children of Reception and year one who wowed us with their performance of ‘A Miracle in Town.’ They were brilliant. They had so much to learn; lines, the words to many songs, direction and they made it all look effortless. The best bit was the enthusiasm with which they sang and participated with a smile on their faces, it brought a tear to many an eye. Well done to Miss Duxbury, Miss O’Leary, Mrs Cooke and Miss Fitzgerald who should be very proud of their production.

Page 5 – School news Christingle

On Wednesday 6th December, the children from years four, five and six, attended a Christingle service at Coventry Cathedral. The service was a special one for primary school children of Coventry and Warwickshire. It was a lovely child-friendly service helping children understand the meaning of Advent and Christingle. During the service, our children performed one of their favourite Christmas songs ‘Love Shone Down.’ It sounded beautiful in such an impressive building and it was an experience they will never forget. After the service, we took the opportunity to explore the Cathedral and the old bombed Cathedral, which of course they all recognised from the film ‘The Nativity.’

Page 6 – School news Advent Wreaths

Class 4’s homework for the first weekend in December was to make an advent wreath. The objective, where possible, was to upcycle and forage resources and materials to avoid great expense. The standard was exceptional; I know we always say this but it truly was. Any one of them could have won, but in the end; Benjamin was chosen as last week’s artwork of the week winner, Brooke as the winner from year 3 and Alexander from year 4. Well done everyone. They are all on display in Mr Walker’s classroom, please ask if you would like to come and see them.

Page 7 – School news After Show Party

In recognition of their hard work during rehearsals and performances, Miss Duxbury and Miss O’Leary threw all of the children an after show party on Friday afternoon. They played many games, danced to music and finished with cake and squash. As you can see from the photos, they had a great time.

Page 8 – School news Snow

We would like to thank all of our parents for their support and understanding of our decision to close on Monday and Tuesday this week. Thank you for sending all of the children into school in appropriate clothing which meant we were able to make the most of the snow and send the children out to play before the big thaw. They all loved it especially the bit where they bombarded Mr Roberts with snowballs (video on twitter).

Page 9 – School news Christmas with the Aliens

Another week, another stunning performance. This week it was the turn of years two and three to shine in their performance of ‘Christmas with the Aliens.’ This was a modern twist on a traditional nativity as four aliens crashed into earth and spent their time on our planet learning the story of the birth of a King. The children were brilliant, the songs were catchy and there was some impressive acting on stage. A special mention must go to Dylan in year 4 who was a last minute replacement due to another child’s absence for Wednesday’s matinee. We are very proud of all of them and a very well done to Miss Armstrong, Mrs Prescott and Miss Higgins for a very successful production.

Page 10 – School news Christmas Jumper Day Next Thursday is Christmas Jumper Day. In return for coming into school in your most ‘Christmassy’ outfit, we are asking every child to bring in £2 (or more). Please don’t go out and buy a Christmas jumper if you don’t have one or have outgrown last year’s (and that’s just the adults), you are welcome to wear Christmas colours instead. It is not compulsory and anyone not wishing to participate is welcome to wear uniform as normal.

This year, all money raised will be going to St Michael’s Catholic Primary School in Nanka, Nigeria. Nanka is Father Damian’s hometown and St Michael’s is where he was educated. All of the pupils at St Michael’s are so grateful to be educated and feel blessed and proud to be one of its pupils. As you can imagine, they have much less than us in the way of materials and resources and we would like to help them. We have been in touch with the Head teacher who has agreed to ask the pupils to write to us in 2018 to tell us what they have bought so that we can become pen pals. This is

a wonderful opportunity to support children in Africa and know the money is going direct to where it is needed to help their education.
