Term 2, Week 5 May 24, 2019 Li-Li and the poison Principal's Editorial Here is the story of a young girl named Li-Li. A long time ago, she got married and went to live with her husband and mother-in-law. In a very short time, Li-Li found that she couldn’t get along with her mother-in-law at all. Their personalities were very different, and Li-Li was angered by many of her mother-in-law’s habits. In addition, she criticised Li-Li constantly. Days turned into weeks and weeks in to months. Li-Li and her mother-in-law never stopped arguing and fighting. But what made the situation even worse was that, according to ancient Chinese tradition, Li-Li had to bow to her mother-in-law and obey her every wish. All the anger and unhappiness in the house was causing the poor husband great distress. Finally, Li-Li could not stand her mother-in-law’s bad temper and dictatorship any longer, and she decided to do something about it. Li-Li went to see her father’s good friend, Mr. Huang, who sold herbs. She told him the situation and asked if he would give her some poison so that she could solve the problem once and for all. Mr. Huang thought for awhile, and finally said, Li-Li, I will help you solve your problem, but you must listen to me and obey what I tell you. Li-Li said, "Yes, Mr. Huang, I will do whatever you tell me to do." Mr. Huang went into the back room, and returned in a few minutes with a package of herbs. He told Li-Li, "You can’t use a quick-acting poison to get rid of your mother-in-law, because that would cause people to become suspicious. Therefore, I have given you a number of herbs that will slowly build up poison in her body. Every other day prepare some pork or chicken and put a little of these herbs in her serving. Now, in order to make sure that nobody suspects you when she dies, you must be very careful to act very friendly towards her. Don’t argue with her, obey her every wish, and treat her like a queen." Li-Li was so happy. She thanked Mr. Huang and hurried home to start her plot of murdering her mother-in-law. Weeks went by, and months went by, and every other day, Li-Li served the specially treated food to her mother-in-law. She remembered what Mr. Huang had said about avoiding suspicion, so she controlled her temper, obeyed her mother-in-law, and treated her like her own mother. After six months had passed, the whole household had changed. Li-Li had practiced controlling her temper so much that she found that she almost never got mad or upset. She hadn't had an argument in six months with her mother-in-law, who now seemed much kinder and easier to get along with. The mother-in-law’s attitude toward Li-Li changed, and she began to love Li-Li like her own daughter. She kept telling friends and relatives that Li-Li was the best daughter-in-law one could ever find. Li-Li and her mother-in-law were now treating each other like a real mother and daughter. Li-Li’s husband was very happy to see what was happening. One day, Li-Li came to see Mr. Huang and asked for his help again. She said, "Dear Mr. Huang, please help me to keep the poison from killing my mother-in-law! She’s changed into such a nice woman, and I love her like my own mother. I do not want her to die because of the poison I gave her." Mr. Huang smiled and nodded his head. "Li-Li, there’s nothing to worry about. I never gave you any poison. The herbs I gave you were vitamins to improve her health. The only poison was in your mind and your attitude toward her, but that has been all washed away by the love which you gave to her." In China it is said: The person who loves others will also be loved. It’s worth a thought. Nurturing Young MindsProblematic Internet Usage (PIU) and how to manage it - ‘7 Deadly Signs’ How does a concerned parent go about determining whether their child may be developing an internet or gaming problem, and how might they begin to tackle it?

A key starting point is that there will be early warning signals that all parents should be on the lookout for: 1. Playing computer games or spending time on the web, for longer and longer periods over successive weeks or months. 2. Going online as soon as the person wakes up. 3. Neglecting daily family routines or responsibilities, such as household chores, daily hygiene or homework. 4. Minimising, or overtly lying about, their time spent online when confronted by a family member with concerns about their excessive usage. 5. Getting irritable, angry or even aggressive towards those family members if their ICT usage is blocked or curtailed- such as by confiscating their device or installing time-limiting software. 6. A drop over time in the young person’s grades at school, their ability to concentrate in class or on a homework assignment. 7. A noticeable decline in ‘real world’ activities, such as sports or hobbies, or going and seeing friends for general play.

Improve process: 1. Take an inventory, collecting data of activities and usage. 2. Monitor change of habits. 3. Consider parenting styles. 4. Collect information of real-world (off-line world) activities. Having an adequate amount of external activities, interests and friendship groups has been shown to be correlated with having a healthy mental well-being. 5. Are there any other mental health factors? 6. Have there been recent stresses and strains in the young person’s life? (Bullying on and offline, arguments, losses, perceived failures). All these may affect a person’s self-esteem. 7. External help needed? By this stage it can be identified whether a young person has PIU. A reasonably informed judgement can be made of contact with a health professional needs to be made, as there may be the presence of anxiety, depression or low-self-esteem.

Secondary News

Festival of FaithThis week has been a very special one for our high school students, as we’ve celebrated our annual Festival of Faith. Each day, our guest speaker, Andy Litchfield, has shared a message about the good news of Jesus. Students were encouraged to trust God in their lives, and to see the amazing things God can do in them.

As mentors in the lives of young people, we as staff see the challenges our students face. They battle with external pressures to follow unhealthy lifestyles, with strong temptations to allow various sins into their lives, and with a culture of materialism that entices them to pursue ‘things’ over meaning. What we’ve seen in Andy’s messages this week is that God’s alternative is to pursue a life of meaning through connection with Him, and through loving service to our fellow man.

We’re so proud of our students here at the College. So many of them came together this week, taking on various roles in our Festival. We’ve loved seeing Grishma, Tala, Brooklyn, Asam, Angad, Alec, Jamie and Michael serving hot chocolate, Diesel cooking up a storm with our pancake BBQ, Declan singing his heart out, and Christian and Stephen manning the audio visual desk. There are so many others who we could name. We’re so stoked to serve beside each of you, and we eagerly look on as you continue to grow in your lives.

May God guide you every step of the way!

SSV Division AthleticsLast Friday, a record 33 students represented the College at the SSV Division Track and Field Carnival at Meadowglen Stadium.

These athletes represented the school across the varying track and field events that they won at the school carnival a month ago. With students entered in 98 individual events and in 7 relay teams, the students managed to finish in 5th place as a school group; however, the gap to 2nd place was incredibly close.

A number of Gilson students won their events and will continue on to represent not only the College but also the Whittlesea Division at the Northern Metropolitan Regional Carnival later in the year.

Great work to all our athletes!

Inter House Boys NetballLast week our Boys Netball match took place which resulted in an incredibly close and high scoring match.

Many of the boys it seems have been learning to understand their positioning and how to hustle for ball within the rules of the game.

At the final buzzer Barnett reigned victorious 14 points to 12 over Corliss, making it their fourth consecutive Interhouse win within the past weeks. Corliss, while they may have lost the last four competitions, they won the previous five in a row themselves and still lead the competition.

Next we cast our eyes towards the remaining Badminton competitions and upcoming Futsal matches.
