QUALITY CATHOLIC BOYS’ EDUCATION

In the Edmund Rice Tradition

I’ve been speaking to your parent-grandparent- rela-tive-friend over the past few weeks in the lead-up to, and at, my son’s Baptism. They made a comment in conversation that they wished you would baptise your child and that they were worried about it.

Now I’m sure you get comments from them all the time, and that every man and his dog wants to have a say in our parenting but, as a young parent, I want you to know a bit more about Baptism.

People these days seem to be putting off baptising their children for some time. Sometimes it’s only done just before they need to get into that Catholic high school they want to send them to. Maybe this is because there is a lower infant mortality rate, or because people are practicing their faith less fervent-ly, or because many Protestants baptise later, or be-cause people seem to trust today that an infant would not be excluded from Heaven.

Baptism isn’t just another ceremony, a big fuss of taking your child to church and then having to organ-ise something to have afterwards. The Catechism calls Baptism “the priceless grace of becoming a child of God.” Baptism is receiving the grace for salvation. This gift speaks of the love that God has for every individual he has created and of his desire to have everyone in a relationship with him, a relationship that will grow from infancy with the beautiful faith of the child.

Baptism allows the child to become a member of the Church – the largest institution in the world, found

internationally and with a rich tradition that allows unlimited opportunity and experiences (after all, this is God’s Church). Opportunities and community that don’t come through being “nothing.”

People often say that they won’t baptise their child but will support them in their decision later on if they choose to go down that route. As a child, I re-ceived the sacraments later in my teen years, rather than at infancy. I found that way much harder than, say; I had grown up in the faith. There was a frus-trating few years of waiting, wanting to receive the sacraments that would allow me to more greatly live the faith I had chosen and conform to the faith of my wider family.

It was a struggle to find someone to work with to organise receiving catechesis, and then the actual sacraments.

And while Baptism is a great gift, Baptism alone sure-ly isn’t enough. Faith, by nature, grows by hearing and seeing. As part of the ceremony of Baptism, the parents are individually blessed to receive graces to aid the nurturing of the child. In my opinion, with parenting being one of the biggest challenges that I will undertake in my life, every grace is needed to help with all that we face in trying to grow the best child we can.

So you may presume your child will reach Heaven with Baptism. But through Baptism, you can have confidence in knowing your child will be reclaimed for Christ and welcomed into Christ’s kingdom. To

Dear Parents who haven’t baptised their children,

Student on-line Competition

Sunday 29th July is Caring Sunday.

The Caring Foundation is holding an on-line competi-tion for all students attending Catholic Schools or Catholic Parishes so they can learn more about the great charity work funded by the Foundation here on our “doorstep”. Students can go to our website www.caringfoundation.org.nz. They will be able to read about how to make an auto-matic $3.00 donation by texting (subject to parental approval).

Please encourage your children to take part in the competition and learn more about the work of the Catholic Caring Foundation helping families and children in need here in our Diocese.

quote Catholic writer, Holly Rutchik, as a parent, even when my child’s not with me, I need to know where she is.

There is some urgency about Baptism. So much so, that canon law says that parents are obliged to see that their infants are baptised within the first few weeks and if in danger or death, to be baptised with-out delay. I admit, though, that it says something that as a passionate Catholic I learnt of this urgency a few weeks ago, even after my son had been in neo-natal intensive care.

You’ll have to excuse that this is written by a mother and not a theologian. This is merely why I think Bap-tism is something important and person-changing for my children.

Sincerely

A young mother

SENIOR RETREATS Last Friday saw the last of the senior retreats take place at the Friary in Mt Roskill. These five days of

retreats for all students at Years 11 and 12 are an important part of College life and help build on the Edmund Rice Spirit of Presence, Compassion and Liberation. Father Kevin and the team from LOGOs introduced these groups to the themes of: “Flip the script: making good choices”, at Year 11 and “Preparation for Catholic Leadership”, at Year 12. The team engaged and challenged the students in many ways each day. As Daniel, one of the LOGOs leaders said: “being male is a matter of birth; being a man is a matter of choice.” There has been very posi-tive feedback from many of the boys about their day on retreat.

24 hours, 13 Prefects, their quest - funds to raise It all started at 1.30pm Thursday 21 June and finished 1.30pm Friday 22 June. Thirteen Prefects rowed continuously in shifts to raise funds for the Catholic Caring Foundation.

The Prefects, lead by James Devereaux, rowed non-stop on a rowing machine powering a light bulb for 24 hours. They were not out to break any records but to raise funds.

The Erg-a-thon is fundraising for the Catholic Caring Foundation which the Prefects chose to support, as they support over 40 organisations in and around Auckland including Edmund Rice Camps, The Logos project and Attitude.

In the breaks the Prefects were planning for term 3, studying, playing games and reflecting on the year so far.

This group of young men wanted to challenge them-selves and create an awareness of the Catholic Caring Foundation among the students. Mr Roberts, the Year 13 Dean, said that he was “very impressed with the initi-ative taken by the Prefects to organise and participate in a such an event in an effort to raise funds for the Catho-lic Caring Foundation.”

James said that this year’s Prefects were out to find a different way to raise funds for charity. As a number of the boys had rowed for the school, the idea of using an “erg,” that many of them had trained on for rowing, seemed like a good idea.

Fundraising for the Catholic Caring Foundation was supplemented by a mufti day and a sausage sizzle or-ganised and run by a number of Year 12 students. The events raised over $2500.

Eddy’s helpers, aka the Edmund Rice Service Group, is set to become an active part of the parish scene in West Auckland. On Saturday 16th July, this group of enthusiastic Year 11, 12 and 13 students, led by a dedicated group of Liston College Prefects, participated in its first ser-vice exercise on at Te Atatu Holy Family Parish.

Eddy’s Helpers was established at the start of Term 2 by a group of Pre-fects with other senior students joining them. The aim of the group is to offer practical support to those in need in our community, in the Ed-mund Rice Tradition.

As Mrs Cathrine Skelton, the Director of Religious Studies, said “it is great to see that the tradition of service is alive and well in the young people of today.”

The group began clearing away what had become a rubbish area. This made way for bark to be laid and would eventually lead to the land being used by the parish and community. The Parish Priest and Old Boy of Liston College, Father Andrew Matthew, was very thankful and pleased with the work the group had done.
