KURUNJANG PRIMARY SCHOOL ~ “Learning Together” NEWSLETTER 1 - 2017 Thursday 2 nd February, 2017 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT A very big welcome back to all our Kurunjang Primary School families; particularly the 12 new families who had enrolled at the end of 2016 and the 10 families who have enrolled this week. We have children who have moved into Kurunjang from other areas of Melton; from within Victoria, including Ballarat; interstate, including Albury and Townsville and internationally, including Sudan and Samoa. This time last year we had 489 students enrolled. We are currently on 555 - and climbing! We also welcome our 53 teaching, education support and technical staff, including Melinda Price (Foundation) Lisa Condon, Estelle Van Sittert, Angella Templeton and Krystyna Edwards (Year1/2), Fiona Hayden and Stephanie Gilmour (Year 3/4), Roisin McGettigan and Jessica Roso (Year 5/6) and Stacey Williams (First Aid/Administrative Assistant). Attached is a list of all staff, classes and room/building location in the school. If you haven’t already, we encourage you to visit your child/ren’s classrooms to see their learning environment and to meet this year’s teachers. As in past years we will be conducting our first interviews on the 2 evenings of Tuesday 7 th and Wednesday 8 th of March. Details of the interviews, including booking times, will be forwarded closer to the time. We also encourage you to regularly communicate with the staff throughout the year in order to keep abreast of your child/ren’s progress or share information that will assist their learning and wellbeing. If there is something that the teacher should know at the beginning of the day, please let them know while being conscious of the start of instruction time. If the information requires a longer time, please ask the teacher for a mutually agreeable time before or after school. (Staff and team commitments and meetings are scheduled Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3.30-4.30). Staff will also contact you by phone. Please ensure that all contact details are updated at the office as necessary. Today you have also received information regarding signing up for the school’s portal COMPASS App. Existing families are able to update their personal details via this App and keep abreast of school events etc. This year we will be extending this service to include ongoing electronic reporting of your child’s progress. Traditionally a report has been forwarded at the end of the first semester and second semester. From week 6 of this term all parents and carers will have the opportunity to access the unit overviews in Maths, English and Inquiry and receive regular progress assessments of their child/ren throughout the year. You will receive further information regarding this but please ensure that you have returned the return slip if you have not done so previously, in order to receive your personalised login details. Another difference is the time of our whole school assembly. Instead of first thing on Monday morning, the staff would like to trial assembly at 2.30pm on Friday afternoons. It will allow all children to settle immediately into the routine of the school week and learning in their classrooms on Monday morning. We are hoping that as many parents who are available, will be able to join the children and staff at this new time. This will commence not tomorrow but next Friday 10 th February. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Next Monday will be the first day of school for our Foundation students. This week, each have participated in their assessment interview and we thank the Foundation parents for attending at their individual time and assisting the Foundation teachers with additional information about the children. Local Police together with members of the Highway Patrol are running an operation to mark the start of the school year. Operation Schools Back will target the safety of students arriving and departing school with the major focus being the enforcement of the 40kmph school zones. Motorists are asked to be vigilant before and after school as there will be increased pedestrian, road and pushbike traffic. Please allow an extra 5 minutes to find a safe and legal park to ensure your children’s safety. When driving through school zones please adhere to the speed limit and be aware of all staffed school crossings. Failing to stop /remain stationary at school crossings is a $379 fine and 3 demerit points. Stopped-Double parked is a $91 fine and exceeding the speed limit by 10kmph but less than 15kmph is a $303 fine and 3 demerit points. This is just an example of some of the fines; however we, in conjunction with the police, urge all to drive and park safely as the fines are never the worst that can happen for children in cars and on roads. We look forward to a great year working with you in the education and care of your children. \ ~ Learning Together ~ FORWARD PLANNING Monday 6 th February All Foundation Students Commence Full Time Tuesday 7 th & Wednesday 8th March Parent Teacher Interviews – more details next week Tuesday 7 th March School Photo Day Tuesday 14 th March Curriculum Day ~ Students not required at school CENTREPAY You can pay for your child’s Essential Education Resources through Centrepay.
