The wide area network, pro- vided by Amcom, went down about 11.23am yesterday. All government depart- ments and Parliament House were knocked out until all lines were back at 4.28pm. Some public servants were stood down and dismissed for an early weekend. Chief Minister’s Depart- ment chief executive Gary Barnes said ‘‘most govern- ment services across Darwin continued to operate’’. ‘‘Individual departments operated normally for most of the day, with schools, hos- pitals, police fire and other essential services continuing to deliver services,’’ Mr Barnes said. ‘‘While most staff stayed at work today, some agencies made individual decisions about staff who were most af- fected by the loss of services.’’ Information Services De- partment chief executive Kathleen Robinson said: ‘‘While the outage mainly af- fected service provision in Darwin, there were some in- terruptions to services in the region,’’ Ms Robinson said. NT News has heard agen- cies in Katherine and Gove were also affected. Visitors to Berrimah Jail were unable to book visits for today. Customers were unable to pay bills at Power and Water, the Motor Vehicle Registry, call Legal Aid or the Govern- ment Dentist, or contact dozens of other services. Royal Darwin Hospital and NT police headquarters were back online about an hour af- ter the upset. Calls to 000 were unaffected. Amcom chief technology officer Richard Whiting said is was a major service failure and engineers were sent to fix it. ‘‘The incident is in our network and we’re investig- ating,’’ he said. ‘‘The root cause is to be determined. Telstra’s networks were unaffected. TIO’s ATM net- work was working, and branches were open, but staff only had limited access to computer systems. Which street will emerge with a clean sweep? IT’S time to make an extra effort to pick up rubbish on the Territory’s streets. The Tidy Town compe- tition aims to find the com- munity which makes the best effort to bend over and rid the scourge of trash from its neighbourhood. Keep Australia Beautiful Council NT chief executive Heimo Schober said the event would be launched with a cake-cutting and a commun- ity clean-up at Bagot in Dar- win on Tuesday from 9am. ‘‘Territory Tidy Towns provides significant social and environmental benefits to urban, regional and re- mote communities through- out the Territory and has done so for the last 32 years,’’ he said. All are welcome to help pick up some rubbish at the launch. Asim Razi and Ashleigh Ascoli received the Most Outstanding students awards last night Education excellence rewarded THE NT Board of Studies (NTBOS) awards recognised 2013’s top students in a cere- mony at Parliament House last night. Across 24 categories high- lighting primary and high school achievements, 47 stud- ents were awarded for their efforts by various members of parliament. They have been recognised for merits and other areas like vocational education and training, and the top 20 NTCET students. Education minister Peter Chandler said before the event students could now reflect on their hard work in the months af- ter finishing their studies. Ashleigh Ascoli and Asim Razi were awarded the Most Outstanding Stage 2 NTCET student awards. Ms Ascoli, 18, from O’Loughlin Christian Col- lege was the indigenous re- cipient, and said it was a good feeling to be recognised. ‘‘It’s really amazing, Year 12 was a really stressful year so I’m glad we’ve had time to let it sink in,’’ she said. Mr Razi, 17, attended Dar- win High School, and said while the awards were hum- bling, getting into university was just as satisfying. Both are studying at CDU from next month. Miss As- coli will study a Bachelor of Psychology while Mr Razi will study a Bachelor of Clinical Sciences.
