What our customers are saying

e d i to r i a l t est i m o n i a l s

“The V-locity product really takes care of the fragmentation on the Host and VMs automatically without the need of manual intersession or overhead of creating scripts and jobs – the central reporting and confi guration management really facilitates ease of management and metric transparency. This software is absolutely transparent on our virtual systems; it just works.”

Richard Webb, Sustainable Evolution, Inc

One major feature of V-locity is the built-in functionality to compact the VHD fi les. My hard drive was running low on space, but I knew my VMs weren’t using that much and V-locity told me which VHDs to compact. I did that and it freed up a lot of space which then gave V-locity more room to defrag the hard drive. It is also unobtrusive.

Chris Gahlsdorf, Northwest Human Services

The new V-locity technology is an outstanding feature that again puts Diskeeper ahead of any competition. Fragmentation is a huge issue. V-locity solves that problem with the easiest possible interface. It takes just a few minutes to install and it’s ready to go.

Back when the glass counter in the candy store was slightly above my eye level, I’d slam dunk a dime down and get handed a chocolate bar (with almonds) in return. Was it worth 40% of my allowance? Oh, you bet!

Getting more value than you paid for is a good thing, but these days estimating worth has grown a little fuzzy. Value is based on an exchange of needs. One can lose sight of true value if they don’t clearly understand what need they’re fulfi lling.

You may buy a washing machine, but what you need are clean clothes. Simple. But because Information Technology involves complex and interrelated dependencies that constantly evolve, getting what you need can be a challenge.

Current corporate budgeting makes these necessities more crucial than ever:

1. Do more with less.

2. Eliminate waste. Conserve energy.

3. Maximize throughput. Eliminate bottlenecks.

4. Consolidate.

5. Minimize downtime.

The aim of virtualization is to address these points, but its design has not eliminated some of the core performance and effi ciency issues that have haunted networks for decades.

This is why we’ve just released V-locity™ 2 virtual platform disk optimizer. Because it works with virtual platform technology to ensure these needs are met, it delivers a major value to the enterprise far beyond its cost.

V-locity 2 is a vital asset for any serious network productivity. But in terms of value, you can think of it as a big virtual chocolate bar...and it costs a lot less than what a dime was on my allowance.

V-locity synchronizes virtual platforms automatically, in the background.

he intensifi ed demand for greater datacenter effi ciency, control and fl exibility has brought about the phenomenal growth of virtualization. To ensure underlying virtualization performance issues are

handled, Diskeeper Corporation has released new V-locity 2, designed to deliver invisible background optimization of all Windows Guest operating systems running on the VMware ESX and Microsoft Hyper-V platforms.

Effectively shared resources are of critical importance in a virtual environment but are severely impacted by three key barriers:

1. I/O bandwidth is a critical hardware resource for virtual platform performance. Fragmented fi les and fragmented free space create more I/O activity than is needed to directly get a job done. This excess use of a virtual platform’s limited bandwidth occurs in both host platforms and the virtual machines.

2. Virtual machines compete for shared I/O resources. Excess and unnecessary use of disk I/O channels from any VM will impede performance across all other systems running on the host.

3. Virtual disks set to dynamically grow don’t shrink when users or applications remove data. This bloats space and wastes what could be allocated to other virtual systems.

InvisiTasking resource usage graph in V-locity (on Hyper-V Host) Idle resources Idle resources used by InvisiTasking Resources used by system

Manually trying to determine which VMs to shrink is a time-consuming chess game which robs valuable man hours and performance.

The SolutionV-locity 2 optimizes the performance on your entire virtualized platform from the host disk to the VMs. It eliminates resource management priority conflicts, operates automatically in the background without affecting active system resources, maximizes I/O bandwidth efficiency and eliminates “bloated” free space on thin/dynamic disks. V-locity 2 is the only solution of its kind and it does it all automatically.

V-locity consists of several components. The V-locity Host is installed in the VMware ESX Host or Windows Server 2008/R2 operating system running Hyper-V. The V-locity Guest is installed in all Windows virtual machines. For VMware ESX platforms, V-locity also includes a third component, a small application that allows you to remotely connect from your Windows desktop to the V-locity Host component on an ESX system.

On Windows® platforms, each V-locity component will optimize its respective OS, prevent up to 85% of all fragmentation, immediately eliminate existing fragmentation of files and

consolidate free space. This minimizes unnecessary I/Os passed from the OS to the disk subsystem and aligns data on the drives for previously unattainable levels of speed and reliability.

Eliminating Resource Management Priority ConflictsUsing InvisiTasking® technology, the V-locity component on the host virtualization operating system will coordinate I/O optimization routines across all guest systems to ensure optimal automated disk performance with zero resource impact to the productivity of those systems.

How InvisiTasking Works in V-locity:• Invisibly monitors CPU, memory and the significant

hardware bottlenecks of the disk drive and network on the Hypervisor host.

• Taps into unused system resources (e.g., CPU and I/O bandwidth that are almost never fully utilized) on host and guest systems to allow automatic defragmentation.

Page 6: Newskeeper Vol 4, Issue 19

• Takes a proactive approach to instantly detect resource

usage from any virtual machine.

• InvisiTasking is specifically engineered to allow

defragmentation to operate with zero impact across a

virtual platform.

• Maintains complete granular control over its own activity,

and never preempts users or services or virtual machines.

Getting the Most Efficiency from I/O Bandwidth

Diskeeper Corporation’s proprietary IntelliWrite™

fragmentation prevention technology is a highly adaptive

and intelligent technology that prevents up to 85% of all

fragmentation by writing files contiguously to the disk.

The recovery of I/Os that would have been wasted on

fragmentation produces a boost in system performance

and efficiency, resulting in system performance gains

previously unattainable.

IntelliWrite is 100% compatible with copy-on-write

solutions and lowers the I/Os needed for changes to data

at block level.

Copy-on-write technology is also applied to special

virtual disk types such as the VMware Linked Clones and

the Microsoft Differencing Disks. These virtual disk types

are popular for use with desktop virtualization. V-locity

is specially designed to automatically detect these special

virtual disk types and use IntelliWrite to prevent the

majority of fragmentation and disable defragmentation

by default.

Here’s what some of our field testers said…• Allows VMs to stay “tuned” for

peak performance.

• No worry about I/O bottlenecks due to “idle” VMs defragging.

• Keeping the host and virtual systems separate and able to do the job designed.

• The awareness between virtual machines and virtual hosts. Coordination of defragmentation.

• VHD compaction.

Solving the Bloated Virtual Disk Problem

The V-locity Virtual Disk Compaction feature is the first of

its kind to provide a window on how much a thin/dynamic

virtual disk can be shrunk. It also allows the sys admin to,

with a single click, compact any of those selected virtual

disks. As a result, better allocation of storage resources on

virtualization platform(s) is not only possible, it’s easy.

V-locity user Requirements: Host requires Windows 2008 (or R2) server with Hyper-V role. VMware: ESX server 3.5 or later. Guest supports the following operating systems:

Windows XP (requires SP2)Windows VistaWindows 7

Windows Server 2003Windows Server 2008 (or R2)

What are the biggest benefits of V-locity 2?

Page 7: Newskeeper Vol 4, Issue 19

4 innovations that make V-locity 2 unique—and why they matter! While some of the issues related to virtual platform performance and compatibilities are broadly known, only V-locity 2 squarely addresses them with real solutions.

Managing a virtual platform is a commitment to greater effi ciency and cost-savings. The combined technologies in V-locity are designed to ensure greater compatibilities between related functions and maximum I/O effi ciencies across the platform. In short, you get the effi ciency and economy you paid for—benefi ts that are not possible without V-locity 2.

1 IntelliWrite

The only technology that prevents up to 85% of fragmentation before it can happen. In addition to writing larger sequential disk I/Os from Windows VMs (for much better overall performance), it makes less work for copy-on-write technology which copies/tracks every write. Less need for defrag means less writes to track and fewer I/Os used.

2 InvisiTasking

Applications and services within VMs cannot effectively prioritize I/O because they have limited knowledge of Host hardware resource usage. Without InvisiTasking, a background defrag process will cut across the production needs of other VMs. InvisiTasking guarantees completely invisible optimization of all Windows operating systems on supported virtualization platforms. It also eliminates the need for scheduling or monitoring defrag where it’s needed, even when VMs are dynamically added or removed.

3 Virtual Disk Intelligence

V-locity automatically detects special virtual disk types such as the VMware Linked Clones and Microsoft Differencing Disks and creates as close to a zero fragmentation state as possible to avoid having data movement from defrag recorded to “change disks.” This results in faster performance for users of these special disks.

4 Virtual Disk Compaction

Over time, Thin/Dynamic disks only ever grow. They never shrink by themselves, even if data is deleted, because they accumulate free space “holes” that will never be reused. These holes take up space on the host fi le system that could otherwise be allocated for other VMs. Virtual Disk Compaction provides a GUI window showing how much space will be saved with compaction and a one-click ability to initiate this compaction.

1 faster system boot-ups As more applications are added

or profiles expand, boot-up times

become longer and longer. While

there are some “instant-on” solutions

that boot into a thin software layer

or cloud-based application, they

don’t actually accelerate boot-up

and can create issues in a corporate

environment. Look for solutions that

accelerate full computer start-up

and boot the PC directly into the

operating system. Placing system

“boot” files in the optimum logical

sequence and location, makes it boot

faster and with less effort/energy

from the disk drive.

2 environmental footprint Proactive prevention of

fragmentation is among the most

efficient methods to lessen power

consumption, optimize system boot

times and improve disk access

speeds. By also removing any

existing fragmentation, read activity

becomes more efficient, which

reduces power costs.

3 the end may not Justify the means

An automated defragmentation

approach eliminates the need

for time-consuming weekend

defragmentation costs and also the

possibility that a defragmentation

task may be overlooked. The

reduction of backup times with an

automated defragmenter running has

also allowed for less overhead in

terms of manpower, as well as energy

usage of running systems when

they would normally be offline, i.e.,

nights and weekends. VARs should

look for solutions with zero system

overhead for applications that must

run frequently or continuously.

4 Virtual environments and fragmentation

Defragmentation plays a major role

in aiding the transition to virtual

systems, as file fragmentation

causes the operating system to pass

extra and unnecessary I/O traffic to

the storage sub-system. As virtual

machines (VMs) share a common

10 Guidelines for Enterprise Systems Optimization

Manny Salinas is Chief Marketing Officer at Diskeeper Corporation, and has been instrumental in positioning the organization as an innovator in performance and reliability technologies. He resides in Los Angeles and is the proud father of two daughters and grandfather of three grandsons.

Increasingly sophisticated software and hardware is being used in modern storage environments—from disk-level technologies to massively scalable network storage facilities. There are a number of myths and misconceptions regarding the continuing need for a solution to manage fragmentation in these environments. From the time nonvolatile storage was introduced decades ago, there have been layers of abstraction added between the users/applications and those devices. The fact that modern data centers go well beyond the single direct attached drive and employ advanced storage infrastructures with additional layers of abstraction, does not eliminate the need to address fragmentation issues. To help VARs handle what may be lurking in their enterprise customers’ storage arrays, here are 10 guidelines to prevent fragmentation, which reduces disk write activity, saving energy and reducing operational costs. These best practices bring to light the hidden costs, real impact and potential “gotchas” in keeping complex enterprise systems performing optimally.

Page 9: Newskeeper Vol 4, Issue 19

Vo lu m e 4 | i ss u e 1 9 9

hardware platform, excessive and unnecessary use of hardware/storage resources by one VM slows not only the requesting VM, but all other VMs on that platform.

5 rapid delivery of essential data Placing data that is frequently

accessed in the optimal performance region on disks minimizes the amount of disk head movement to collect data files scattered across the disk, reducing wear and tear and power costs while speeding access to frequently used “important” data.

6 compact free space Free space fragmentation is

often overlooked and will inevitably increase the likelihood and degree of fragmentation of data and system files. The ability to consolidate space into a small handful of very large segments in order to improve future file-write performance is an important consideration. Consolidating free space prevents file-write performance degradation for future write activity on a given volume. VARs should look for ways to achieve this automatically and consistently, without administrative intervention.

7 daily check list and fragmentation

Rather than allowing files to fragment when written, look for solutions that prevent fragmentation from occurring in the first place, by intelligently writing contiguous files to the disk so system resources are not wasted creating fragmentation. Systems that operate reliably and

without complaint (i.e., help desk calls) are less likely to be replaced. They’ll be used until new production requirements dictate more powerful hardware, which is a real business reason to upgrade and not a “break-fix” reactive reason. This enables site owners to postpone refresh costs and the attendant overtime overhead that goes with it.

8 metadata and system files fragmentation challenges

Seek a solution that offers an effective way to handle crucial system files and metadata files. Some defragmenters offer only online defragmentation modes and cannot solve fragmentation of most metadata files as well as system files, such as the paging file or hibernation file. A fragmented hibernation file, for example, can dramatically increase the time for a hibernating laptop to return to a usable state and, if free space is not effectively consolidated, expansion of the paging file on a system has a very high likelihood of fragmenting.

9 solid state drive (ssd) optimization

Information stating that SSDs should not be defragmented is based on unproven and incorrect theories related to NAND Flash performance characteristics. The issue with NAND Flash storage is not the medium itself, but rather the software/firmware that controls it. Scientific investigations have clearly shown that, as free space fragmentation increases, the write-performance of

many SSDs decreases. It is important to implement solutions that can automatically detect and maintain SSD write-performance at peak levels.

10 centralized performance management

Thorough reporting and event alerting on applications running in production environments has become increasingly important. IT departments and service providers are often tasked with meeting particular service level agreements (SLAs) for uptime, performance, etc. This requires greater involvement and knowledge regarding all applications, processes and services that contribute to—or detract from—meeting those defined service obligations. Look for a solution that provides reporting, alerts and centralized management. The ability and responsibility of IT departments in enterprise organizations to control a process or program cannot be understated.

summary In short, no matter how or where your customers store data, solving file fragmentation is as vital for peak system performance and reliability as it has ever been. Eliminating fragmentation increases the speed of boot-up, backups, anti-malware scans, and other system utilities, while preventing system conflicts, hard drive crashes, and data corruption. Reducing disk activity improves performance and reliability, while reducing energy costs and IT support requirements—all a bonus to VARs and their customers.

“Not only does the IntelliWrite technology speed up disk defragmentation—since it prevents fragments from occurring—and not only does the software simply perform its functions much faster than did earlier versions, the benefits of improved disk optimization means the systems run faster all the time. Every function seems faster, especially those that use large disk files like PhotoShop or AutoCAD. I was afraid that the IntelliWrite feature might become a system resource hog and slow performance, but the opposite is indeed the fact.”

— David Yohn, Ph.D., Director, Marchi Thermal Systems

“With the Diskeeper 2010 upgrade with IntelliWrite, we shaved over four hours off the backup time, and saw SCOM errors about disk read times go away.”

— Bryan Gifford, Standard Pacific Homes (200 Diskeeper Servers)

“We have been running Diskeeper 2010 EnterpriseServer for two months on an HP EVA SAN 4000 and 4400, with four drives of one TB each. Diskeeper removed over 45 million fragments in the last two months on a specific volume that had only 15% free space, and IntelliWrite prevented 24,000 fragments. I believe that will be even better as soon as we can extend this volume to two TB.”

— Jean-François Poirier, Technicien Telecommunication, Spectra Premium Industries Inc.

The Chief Technology Officer of a large travel agency was in charge of the specialty and emerging markets which were running close to 350 servers—both physical and virtual—in their four data centers. He told us they use a pretty complex environment with six high-end Dell blade servers that host approximately 230 virtual servers in a four-node active failover configuration using two EMC Clariion SANs as the storage base.

He has been happy to give an endorsement for V-locity virtual platform disk optimizer and Diskeeper performance software, and will be adding more licenses. As they process a million and a half dollars of business a day in credit cards, the computer systems have to be reliable. They have one full-time Data Center employee whose responsibility is to manage I/O response time.

“V-locity is fabulous. We have seen a significant performance increase after installing Diskeeper—working its magic on the six physical servers which each has 40 virtualized Windows 2008 R2 servers. It has been great,” reported the CTO.

the challenge:The agency has at least 200 virtual Hyper-V servers deployed at any given time. They have two EMC SANs, a Clariion CX340b and a Clariion CX700. The CX700, which is fairly old technology, uses low-end 5400 RPM SATA drives—not the fastest drives around but very inexpensive; a 300-gig drive costs $50. They run 240 of these drives.

A mini-experiment was run and they discovered that the V-locity product allowed them to put the majority of the

virtual servers on low-cost, low-end drives while continuing to get the same performance out of them that they had been getting out of a high-end fiber channel 15,000-K drive. This was due to the disks at both the host and guest level being so optimized by V-locity. This change reduced storage costs by literally hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The IT staff had to do some specialized configuration on the EMC so that the throughput could be maximized at the hardware level, but that was reasonably easy to do. They were concerned with the fact that during the virtualization of the VHD files, a lot of those servers use dynamically expanding files for disk space reasons and conservation primarily. With V-locity, instead of putting virtual machines on $550 disks, they were able to put them on $50 disks. The cost difference was phenomenal.

the solution:A large fiscal budget was allocated for procurement of the higher performance drives because of the slow systems and the virtual servers not performing up to expectations. The CTO figured a unique way to leverage the licensing costs to alleviate the $300,000 worth of new hardware needed. The cost difference between SATA drives and fiber channel drives is very big. A SATA drive is $50 to $75. For a 300-gig fiber channel drive they were paying $900—a huge difference.

A re-configuration was done on the SAN with V-locity deployed on both the host and guest level. The average response time went from 50-60 milliseconds down to less than five milliseconds. The V-locity solution was more than satisfactory and everything was performing much, much better.

When you install Diskeeper or V-locity via Diskeeper

Administrator, those installations are preconfigured to

then send report and alert data back to that instance

of Diskeeper Administrator. However, there are many

means by which to install Diskeeper that do not include

our central management piece. While you may have

alternative preferred methods for deploying Diskeeper

and V-locity across your network, you may well be

interested in using some of the many other robust

management aspects of Diskeeper Administrator. For

most of those features, you’ll want to ensure that the

end point installs are aware of the location of the

management app, and are sending it data. Having the

clients aware of the Administrator supports valuable

IT management functions like license management,

performance reports, alerts and more.

Good news is that there are a number of ways Diskeeper

and V-locity installations can become “aware” of

Diskeeper Administrator in order to send it information.

The easiest discovery method is: using Diskeeper

Administrator, scan the network and discover Diskeeper

or V-locity clients on networked computers. A discovered

system automatically becomes aware of the presence of

Diskeeper Administrator and will start sending it data.

What our customers are saying continued from page 3

The bottom line for me is that I can’t imagine running an environment without Diskeeper. I don’t consider Diskeeper to be optional. It’s a requirement as far as I’m concerned.

We have an overwhelming amount of constant change going on with our systems—more RAM, new disk controllers, new disks, new video cards, change the operating system, different apps, reconfiguration of apps. It’s constant and fast.

With Diskeeper running, it’s one huge thing that I don’t have to worry about. I know I’m getting the best performance out of my disks that I am going to get and that it’s going to happen with a minimal amount of admin time. It’s also hugely helpful to get disk usage reports every day. Our production stations use an enormous amount of local storage.Tom Salciccia, IT Operations Manager, In-Three, Inc.

Diskeeper stood out because of the claim that it runs as a background process and is capable of operating only in the very short moments while the file was not being manipulated. I just installed and let IntelliWrite do its thing. After we installed Diskeeper, we were very happy to find that it did, in fact, complete the defrag job. Not only did it repair the initial fragmentation issues, but it does, in fact, keep on top of the fragmentation over time.

I am usually VERY wary of installing services that are always running on production servers. I have to say this tool does have a very small resource footprint for both CPU and Memory, and the net effect of Disk I/O by far is in the positive. As our standard practice, we now install this tool on all of our production database servers.Bryan Rustrum, Database Administrator, Centercode, Inc.

“I love the Diskeeper EnterpriseServer product and the fact that you support the 64bit Itanium Operating Systems is a huge benefit to us. These systems are very critical and the fragmentation prior to using Diskeeper was really hurting performance. If I recall correctly the drives were at about 90% fragmentation and with Auto Defrag enabled they stay around 3-5%. That feature alone makes the product worthwhile.”Rick Sadley, Windows Systems Administrator Barnes & Noble Distribution

As for an install time solution, there is a command line

option in setup that can be used to specify the Diskeeper

Administrator’s location. The setup command line to specify

a Diskeeper Administrator computer name with a Diskeeper

or V-locity install is:

Setup.exe /s /V“/qn ADMINNAME=\“DKAdminComputerName\””

In summary, even when you use alternative means to deploy

Diskeeper and/or V-locity across your network, there are

many options to set up clients for central management via

Diskeeper Administrator.

The data (Diskeeper Administrator computer name) is stored

in a text file on each Diskeeper client. So, another way to

direct end points to Diskeeper Administrator would be to

copy this text file, with the Diskeeper Administrator name

already listed, to any/all Diskeeper client(s). This can be a

handy option for image-based deployments.
