Editorial
Dear Porsche Club Presidents,Dear Porsche Club members,
As a Porsche works driver I’m particu-larly delighted that Porsche AG has lit-erally raced ahead since the start of2010. A number of new Porsche mod-els are “revving up”, demonstratingfrom their “starting positions” thatPorsche deserves its current spot asthe largest and most successful sportscar manufacturer in the world.
Take the new Cayenne, which now notonly boasts an increased and more effi-cient performance, but is also up to180 kg lighter, reminding me of thestandard Porsche motto that is the ba-sis for all our racing car designs –“Porsche Intelligent Performance”.
However, the Porsche 918 Spyder con-cept car took me by surprise, as it fol-lows this credo and has proven to be anexceptional athlete in every aspect. This combination was new to me – theperformance of a full blooded racingcar with the emission rates of a smallcar – it arouses the curiosity about theuse of this plug-in hybrid technology forfuture Porsche sports cars.
The racing car Porsche 911 GT3 RHybrid, where an innovative hybridsystem works in tandem with a flywheelstorage system, helping us to driveeven more efficiently, shows that this isfar from an unrealistic, distant dream. When developing this car, the objectivewas to achieve the same performancealongside lower consumption. Our goalduring the race will be one or maybe twopit stops fewer than the competition.
With the beginning of the motorsportseason, the much loved Porsche Clubevents spring up once again. A glanceat the Porsche Club event calendar
shows there’s something for everyPorsche enthusiast again this year. Wecan look forward to the very best ofPorsche magnetism and motorsport, from excursions and slalom events tothe Porsche Club Cup and the exclusivePorsche Sports Cup Series races:events for young and old, beginnersand “veterans” alike – all around theworld. I wish you great success and allthe best for your events.
Porsche Clubs really do form an im-pressive “family” where drivers like usfeel very much at home. The AmericanLe Mans Series races in particular al-ways give my colleagues and me thechance to meet inspired Porsche Clubmembers and share our love of motor-sport.
Fans of historical motor racing will cer-tainly get what they came for at thisyear’s Le Mans Classic (8th–11th ofJuly): every metre and every second willcount as motorsport legends such asthe Porsche 908, 917 and various 911RSR models battle it out. PorscheFrance and the French Porsche Clubumbrella organisation will again offer anexclusive package to Porsche Clubmembers, allowing Porsche drivers topark on the infield of the racetrack, forexample.
I’m also excited about the first PorscheSports Cup European Final — the re-spective winners of the three PorscheSports Cup and Porsche Super SportsCup Series in Germany, Switzerlandand Scandinavia will meet between22nd and 24th of October in Hocken-heim to mark the end of what we hopewill be a successful motorsport season(see also page 22).
I’m looking forward to the upcomingraces and to seeing all those PorscheClub members at the trackside.
Wishing you all a great start to the season.
Kind regardsJörg Bergmeister

Porsche AGis demonstrating a further increase inits hybrid expertise. The 918 Spyderprototype combines cutting-edge rac-ing technology and electromobility, re-sulting in a fascinating range of quali-ties: on the one hand it has the smallcar emission rate of 70 grams of CO2per kilometre at a fuel consumptionrate of 3 litres per 100 kilometres, while on the other hand it offers thedriving performance of a super sportscar, acceleration from 0–100 km/h injust under 3.2 seconds, a top speed ofover 320 km/h and a lap time on the

a high-speed V8 engine producing over500 hp and a maximum engine speedof 9200 rpm, as well as electric motorson the front and rear axles with an over-all mechanical power output of 218 hp(160 kW). The V8 is a further develop-ment of the successful 3.4 litre driveengine in the RS Spyder racing car andis located in the mid-engine position infront of the rear axle. The superb bal-ance of this design structure guaran-tees maximum performance on theracetrack. Power is transmitted to thewheels by a seven-gear Porsche Doppel-kupplung (PDK), which also feeds thepower from the electric drive to therear axle. The front electric drive pow-ers the wheels at a fixed ratio.
Energy is stored by a fluid-cooledlithium-ion battery behind the occupantcompartment. In a plug-in hybrid model, the battery can be charged by pluggingit into the mains. In other models, the ki-netic energy created when the carbrakes is converted into electric energyand fed into the battery, which providesadditional energy for acceleration.
A control knob on the steering wheellets the driver call up four different driv-ing modes: choose “E-Drive” for elec-tric power alone, with a driving range ofup to 25 km. In “Hybrid” mode, the 918Spyder uses the electric systems aswell as the combustion engine, with theindividual drive components adapting
themselves to the relevant driving situa-tion for either optimum consumption ormaximum performance.
“Sport Hybrid” mode also uses both drivesystems but with the emphasis on per-formance. Most of the drive power goesto the rear wheels, while a Torque Vector-ing system further improves the drivingdynamics. In “Race Hybrid” mode, thedrive systems are focussed on pure per-formance and excellent driving dynamicsfor the racetrack, operating to their topperformance limits. With sufficientcharge, a “Push-to-Pass” button can beused to give the car extra electricalpower (E-Boost), for example, when over-taking or for even better performance.

The huge range offered by the hybridengine means the 918 Spyder can ei-ther achieve racing car lap times — forexample, less than 7:30 minutes on theNordschleife at the Nürburgring — oremit just 70 grams of CO2 per kilome-tre when driving more economically.
Like its drive system, the motorsportgene is also discernible in the 918 Spy-der’s lightweight body. Its modularstructure with a monocoque made fromcarbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFP)and selective use of magnesium andaluminium means not only that the bodyweighs in at just 1490 kg, but also thatthe high level of torsional rigidity opti-mises driving precision.
The 918 Spyder’s typical Porsche de-sign, reminiscent of legendary, suc-cessful racing cars such as thePorsche 917 Le Mans and today’sPorsche RS Spyder, arouses powerfulemotions. The combination of classicracing car proportions, a clearly struc-
tured design with perfectly finished sur-faces and innovative details results inan aesthetic, balanced and dynamic de-sign, and embodies the perfect symbio-sis of form and function inherent in thePorsche design DNA.
The perfect balance between traditionand progress guarantees excellent roadholding. The variable aerodynamics inthe rear spoiler, typical of Porsche, set afuturistic yet traditional tone.
The protruding shells extending fromthe 918 Spyder’s headrests are de-signed both to improve aerodynamicsand to conceal the retractable ram airintakes.

engine speed (centre) and energy man-agement (right) seem to take their in-spiration from the racing cars of the1960s and embody a philosophy ofclear driver navigation.
The raised centre console in the 918Spyder has a touch panel for intuitiveuse of the driving functions. This contin-ues the theme of reducing visible con-trols while maintaining the sense of di-rect operation. The driving controls areconcentrated mainly on the three-spokemultifunction sports steering wheel. The characteristic Porsche driving sys-tem variables feature a “map switch” tocall up the various driving programs.
This also doubles as the “Push-to-Pass”button, which activates the E-boosterdesigned for overtaking and similar ma-noeuvres. The controls are lit either ingreen for consumption-oriented modesor in red for performance-oriented driv-ing programs.
The 918 Spyder also offers other inno-vative functions such as the range man-ager. When this is switched on, it usesthe map in the navigation system toshow the remaining range before refu-elling on the centre display. The drivercan influence this range by changingthe driving performance settings. Incities with low-emission zones, it also
shows whether you can reach your des-tination using electric power alone. Youcan use these indications and the infor-mation on drive-specific energy charg-ing stations to choose the best driving, charging or fuel-filling strategies.
With its unique combination of ex-tremely low consumption, exceptionalperformance and long electric range, the 918 Spyder symbolises a signifi-cant milestone in the Porsche electro-mobility strategy.

previous models. This is because, likeevery Porsche, the new Cayenne wasdeveloped according to the “PorscheIntelligent Performance” principle:more performance, lower consump-tion, greater efficiency and fewer CO2emissions.
It achieves this via a number of factors, including a new eight-speed Tiptronic Sautomatic transmission with an auto-matic start/stop function and a wide ra-tio range, thermo management for en-gine and transmission cooling circuits, onboard power supply recuperation, variable fuel cut-off and, last but notleast, an intelligent lightweight design.By fine-tuning the weight of the materialblend and making overall designchanges on the car, such as the newactive and lightweight four-wheel drive

The high-light of the new generation was theworld premiere of the Cayenne S Hybridwith a technologically advanced parallelfull hybrid drive and consumption of 8.2litres of fuel per 100 km in the New Eu-ropean Driving Cycle (NEDC), corre-sponding to a CO2 output of just 193g/km. This means the six-cylinderCayenne S Hybrid combines the per-formance of an eight-cylinder with sig-nificantly reduced consumption rates.
Led by the Cayenne S Hybrid, all new-generation models are miles ahead oftheir respective classes in terms of effi-ciency and performance, with a con-sumption rate up to 23% lower than

els consume less than ten litres of fuelper 100 kilometres in the NEDC and, what’s more, two of the models emitless than 200 grams of CO2 per kilome-tre. At 193 g/km the Cayenne S Hybridhas the lowest CO2 emission rates notonly among the Cayenne models, butfrom the entire Porsche range.
The intelligent interplay between thethree-litre V6 supercharger engine andthe electrics allows the Cayenne S Hy-brid to achieve the greatest efficiencyfrom the system as a whole. Dependingon the driving conditions, this isachieved when just one of the two
and greater flexibility, while the totallength has been increased by 48 mil-limetres. Despite the larger outer di-mensions, the new Cayenne generationhas a much more compact and dy-namic feel. A glance into the com-pletely redesigned, very high-quality in-terior reveals the front-raised centreconsole with a high-level selection orswitch lever, lending the inside the feelof a cockpit. The rear seats can bemoved 160 mm backwards and for-wards, and the backrests have threedifferent angle settings.
The Cayenne was launched for sale inEurope on the 8th of May. Porsche hasa model to suit every customer: theCayenne range starts with the 3.6 litreV6 engine. Although it now has a 300hp drive gear, at 9.9 l/100 km, itsNEDC consumption with the optional 8-speed Tiptronic S is 20% less than itspredecessors’. Another model using20% less fuel – 7.4 instead of 9.3l/100 km – is the Cayenne Diesel, whose three-litre V6 diesel engine pro-duces an output of 240 hp (176 kW)and a maximum torque of 550 Newtonmetres.
Porsche has even made the powerfulCayenne S more economical, reducingits 4.8 litre V8 engine’s consumption by23% to 10.5 litres per 100 kilometres. The drive gear now achieves an outputof 400 hp instead of 385 hp and offersbetter driving performance, as do allnew Cayenne generation models, in-cluding the Cayenne Turbo. At 11.5l/100 km, its 4.8 litre, 500 hp (368 kW)V8 bi-turbo engine now has an NEDCconsumption of 23% less than its pred-ecessors (14.9 l/100 km).
So, along with the Cayenne S Hybrid, atotal of three of the five Cayenne mod-
drives is working or when both are op-erating in conjunction. The 34 kW (47hp) electric system is the ideal partnerfor the 333 hp supercharger engineand its high torque/low rpm ratio.
Together, they deliver a top system per-formance of 380 hp and a maximumtorque of 580 Nm at an engine speedas low as 1000 rpm, reaching perform-ance levels on a par with the Cayenne Sand its V8 drive gear.

However, the electric engine can deliver an addi-tional boost for sporty accelerationwhen starting.

Porsche has produced cars in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen for 60 years
In the world of cars, the name of theheadquarters of today’s Dr. Ing. h.c. F.Porsche AG, has a very special ring toits name: Zuffenhausen. Zuffenhausenmeans much more to Porsche AG thanjust a production site steeped in history, because Zuffenhausen is where theheart of the company lies. The head-quarters have been here for 70 yearsand more than one million Porschesports cars have been produced inStuttgart since 1950.
Back in June 1938, the Porsche designoffice relocated from Kronenstraße 24in the centre of Stuttgart to a newly builtcomplex in the suburb of Zuffenhausen.Key chapters in automobile history werewritten at the original Porsche plantfrom the very beginning: this is where
the pilot series of what would later be-come the Volkswagen “Beetle” was de-veloped in 1938, while in 1939 it wasfollowed by the forefather of all subse-quent Porsche sports cars, Type 64.Originally designed for the long-distancerace from Berlin to Rome, these aerody-namic, streamlined vehicles are re-garded as the groundbreakers for allsubsequent Porsche models.
After the first Porsche 356s werecreated in 1948 in Gmünd, Austria,Porsche came back to the car’s home,Stuttgart, at the end of 1949. As thePorsche plant in Zuffenhausen was stilloccupied by American forces, Porscherented a hall from the neighbouring bodyplant owned by Reutter & Co. GmbH,and started planning production in early
1950. On the 6th of April 1950 the firstType 356 was produced; 369 of thesecars would be made by the end of theyear. The success of the Porsche sportscars can not only be deduced from thesales figures, but also from the furtherexpansion of the Zuffenhausen produc-tion units. In 1952 the complex de-signed by architect Rolf Gutbrod wasbuilt for Porsche Plant 2, and in 1956the 10,000th Porsche 356 left the con-stantly expanding production halls. In1960 ensued Porsche Plant 3, housingthe sales and customer service depart-ments, among others.
Right after the launch of the 911 in1964 the company, then Porsche KG,took over Reutter’s body plant togetherwith its 1000 employees. Today, the

4Porsche numbers games
4th anniversary. Already propelled to international stardom.Winning poster at the end of the 1952 motorsport season, four years after production started.
As we mentioned in the last Porsche Club News, every edition from 2010 onwards will feature a “number game”, presenting anumber that fits in with the general theme of our Club magazine. On the topic of motorsport we have chosen the number 4,because just 4 years after production of the Porsche 356 started, the still-fledgling Porsche company managed to win 75 inter-national races – as you can see from the historical poster below.

Porsche Clubs worldwide
Porsche Clubs around the globe unite brand enthusiasts and admirersalike. A small trip through the multi-faceted Club scene highlights thefact that it is the people as well as the cars that make up the Porsche legend.
Dear Porsche Club Members, As you know, Porsche Club Coordination is proud of thePorsche Clubs’ numerous activities around the world andholds the voluntary commitment of their members in veryhigh esteem. Porsche Club members make a valuable contri-bution to creating and sustaining such a positive brand im-age, constantly underlining the core values of the Porschecompany. We were therefore particularly excited that at thestart of the year we had the chance to dedicate a lengthy re-port on the international Porsche scene in the Porsche cus-tomer magazine, Christophorus.
To present the lively and colourful world of Porsche Clubs,Edition 343 of Christophorus featured interviews with a totalof nine Porsche Club Presidents representing their Clubs innine countries and revealed some very interesting and previ-ously unknown facts. At this point we would like to thank allthe Porsche Club Presidents who took part for their activesupport and the editing team of Porsche’s Christophorus fortheir helpful cooperation and for providing us with the originalarticle to print in Porsche Club News.
Ernesto Rodriguez is a globetrotter when it comesto fashion, hot rhythms and motors. The Cuban is amusic professor who has shared the stage with ErosRamazotti and is regularly seen playing drums at thefamous Montreal Jazz Festival. He has his own fash-ion label in Italy: his creations are based on tradi-tional Cuban fashion with an Italian twist. And Ro-driguez is President of the Porsche Club Cuba, which is a regional Club that belongs to the PorscheClub of America. All Porsche drivers on theCaribbean island gain membership to the Club.“When I was small my father had a yellow VW Beetlewhich I adored because of its distinctive engine noiseand design,” explains Rodriguez. “When I got older Ifound out that the Beetle was developed by Ferdi-nand Porsche. And that’s when I understood theclose connection between the Porsche 356 thatdrove past our house every morning and my father’sBeetle.” He now owns a 356 himself and exerciseshis passion for Porsche in the Caribbean, too. In theevenings, Rodriguez likes to sit outside a Havana barto enjoy the sunset with a Mojito or Daiquiri. But hisview of the crystal-clear water of the ocean is onlymade perfect by the Porsche 356 waiting for him atthe side of the road.

Nevertheless, it is withconfidence that the President of the Porsche Club Tirol steers up thepasses and back down to the valley in his 450 hp Porsche. The PorscheClub has worked closely with the Tyrolean Association for the Blind and Visu-ally Impaired since 2006, highlighting a social responsibility to which manyother Clubs are also actively committed. “We wanted to give our event adeeper meaning and give the blind and partially sighted a wonderful experi-ence,” says Demanega. “Travelling in a Porsche is an unforgettable experi-ence for the driver but even more so for the passengers with their excep-tional sense of hearing and touch.”

From Russia with love: Andrey Gerasimov drives aCarrera RS, but his heart lies with other Porsche classics
Andrey Gerasimov remembers exactly how it all began. Watch-ing movies such as “Harper” starring Paul Newman, he wouldmarvel at the 356 A Speedster on the big screen and then throwhimself with starry eyes into every magazine that featuredPorsches. It was a long-time dream of his to drive along Russia’sroads in a 356: a dream he fulfilled years later. Since 2008, Rus-sia has a Porsche Classic Club as well as the Porsche ClubRussia. And it’s no surprise that Gerasimov is the Club’s presi-dent. Even in the remote Vladivostok numerous people are nowdriving classic Porsches. The oldest car owned by a Club mem-ber is a 356 C Cabriolet from 1964. Gerasimov himself owns a911 Carrera (964), a 911 Carrera RS (964) and a Cayenne S. It’sunusual to restore classic cars in Russia — you often have topay customs fees as high as the price of the car itself to importa classic. “But we want to do our bit to see these exceptionalcars driven on the streets of Russia,” says Andrey Gerasimov.

Klaus-Dieter Jänicke was the first to find the stuffed fox. In PorscheClub Westfalen’s traditional hunt through the heart of the Ruhr district,he discovered all the routes in his 911 Carrera S Cabriolet. Last year’swinner, Michael Bonnemann, had lined the streets with sawdust. Theroute, covering more than one hundred kilometres, took Jänicke aroundleafy Dortmund, following in the tracks of the founding fathers and pastthe Hohensyburg before he could hold the trophy in his hands. “It’s minefor a whole year now,” he says happily. The celebrations took place in atraditional German country pub, the perfect place for a proper awardsceremony accompanied by cabbage, fried potatoes and smoked Ger-man sausage. The man from Dortmund is proud to have added hisname to the long list of winners of the traditional event. The fox huntwas started up by the founders of the world’s oldest Porsche Club, reg-istered on the 26th of May 1952 as the Porsche Club Hohensyburg. Andthe first fox hunt took place the very same year. Since then, the“Porsche pack” has been let loose on the fox every year on All SaintsDay. Split into groups of no more than 10drivers, each group was assigned aPorsche driving instructor who clearlyenjoyed giving us a light-hearted insightinto the sophisticated techniques ofsafe racing.
There was more than enough room topractise these – the Porsche trainingground is an impressive 7 km long and1 km wide.
As all practice runs are carried out onpure ice (hence the name “Ice Force”),all Porsche cars are fitted with studdedtyres, which build up the grip you needin these extreme driving conditions.
There are several handling tracks of va-rious degrees of difficulty, which wetackled at different speeds. Althoughboth cars had a surprising amount oftraction thanks to their four-wheel drivesystems and performed reliably on theice, these exercises showed the diffe-rences in design between the rear en-gine Porsche 911 and the front enginePorsche Panamera.
However, we were all more than a littlesurprised by the light-footedness of thePanamera, making it very hard to de-cide which of the sophisticated Por-sche sports car models was more funto dance with on the ice.
Only one thing was clear to all partici-pants: we would all love to do it again.

Ruben Ledesma, who was one of the founders of thePorscheplatz concept, was clearlytouched by this personal gift andthanked everyone involved.
Later on racing drivers and managers ofthe Flying Lizard team joined those in thePorscheplatz marquee and gave detailedanswers to questions from Porsche Clubmembers. This exciting session wasrounded off by interesting contributionsfrom Porsche Motorsport North Amer-ica, who not only brought the newPorsche 911 GT3 Hybrid under the spot-light but also gave an insight into up-and-coming Porsche motorsports products.
On the Saturday morning, no less than156 exquisite Porsche gems lined up onCorner 17 to form a kaleidoscope ofcolours from every Porsche generation. From the Porsche 356 to today’sBoxster models, from the Porschetransaxle sports cars to the newPorsche Panamera, every conceivableversion and construction year was repre-sented and surrounded the Porscheplatzmarquee. But it isn’t just cars that make thePorscheplatz marquee a special place tobe – presentations given by officialPorsche cooperation partners such asMichelin complete the experience and at-
tract Porsche enthusiasts from well be-yond the borders of Florida. It has be-come a tradition for Michelin to present anew set of tyres to the team that trav-elled furthest. The winner of this “longdistance award” was of course de-lighted; after all, he had driven 3400miles from Grants Pass, Oregon, to gethis “place in the sun” at the Porscheplatzin Sebring.

All under one roof: Six Porsche Classic Clubs reunited at Retro Classics 2010!
The tenth Stuttgart Retro Classics fairbroke all previous records – more visi-tors, over 1150 exhibitors, more than3000 cars on show in the halls cover-ing an area of 100,000 m2. Six plant-approved Porsche Classic Clubs wererepresented again in Hall 3 at a Clubstand – equipped for the first time thisyear with exhibition furniture from thebrand-new Porsche Classic Club Kit,which Porsche Club Coordination pro-vided for use at the four major Classicsfairs. A successful premiere!
Two more Club cars were presented atour stand than last year. In our “pole po-sition” (exclusively lit up with colourfulspotlights) was the private Porsche904 of a 356 Club member. A great-looking 914-6 appeared in the secondposition at our stand. Other Club carsincluded: a black Porsche 356-S90, aslate metallic 928-S4, an Indian redPorsche diesel Standard tractor, agreen and white Carrera 911 RS, theyellow 914-6 mentioned above and themint green 968 Cabriolet belonging toour member, Herbert Hintz. Every carwas a highlight in its own right.
Although the platform was full with theseven Club cars, there was enoughstanding room and seating to have achat. But when the multiple rally WorldChampion, Walter Röhrl, spent half anhour at our stand on the Saturday, therewere so many onlookers that there washardly an inch to spare between thecars. He signed dozens of autographsand posed for plenty of photos.
The motto of Retro Classics 2010, “Crème de la Chrome”, deli-vered on its promise: from the 11th to 14th of March, more than 60,000 car lovers visited the biggest classics fair in southGermany.
Even when visitor numbers are at theirhighest, the excellent cooperation withthe Clubs is demonstrated. We’d like tothank all the stand assistants for theirefforts and the Porsche Club Coordina-tion team for their excellent support.
According to the information from thefair organisers, the Stuttgart OldtimerFair was visited by people from morethan 15 nations. As 34% of visitors trav-elled in from outside Baden-Württem-berg where the event was held, mostcoming from Bavaria and Hesse, weshould use this fair more than ever torecruit members in south Germany. Wecould hold some preliminary talks.
Our overall conclusion: Retro Clas-sics 2010 was truly a “Crème de laChrome” event, as a poll has revealedthat 98% of visitors would come to thenext fair on the 10th to 13th of March2011.
