We soon equalised with a well-taken finish from Jonathan Marsh. As the game entered the last 10 minutes we really started to put the pressure on and a neat interchange of passing lead to Jakob Carl being put through only to be taken down and a penalty rightly awarded. Jakob stepped up and despatched the penalty very well to put us 2-1 up with 5 minutes to play. The boys managed to see out the last 5 minutes and once again now move on to play their third final in 4 years which is a remarkable achievement. The boys have also retained the District Premier League title for a fourth consecutive season winning 4 out of their 5 games scoring 20 goals in the process. The boys now march on to the final at the EBB stadium (end of May) to face the Robert Mays School. Please come out and support the boys on this momentous occasion for them all. Team: Joe Fitzjohn, Cameron San Emeterio, Joe Terry, Matthew Barnett, Dan Simmonds, Josh Ford, Ben Glassar, Alex Emery, Stanley Grosch, Jonathan Marsh and Jakob Carl. Man of the Match – Joe Terry

COLLINGWOOD STUDENTS INSPIRED BY AUTHORS On Wednesday 18 April we were privileged to receive a visit by Anthony McGowan. He led two conferences for Years 9 and 10, two workshops and an informal talk with the student librarians and reading club members. His talks were deeply inspiring and passionate and we had some great feedback from students, teachers and management. The range of questions that the students asked were very pertinent and thought-provoking. Anthony explained how his writing was inspired by his childhood, growing up in a rather violent and challenging neighbourhood of Leeds. His books include “The Knife That Killed Me”, as well as his latest book “Rook” - when Kenny and Nicky rescue a rook left for dead, Kenny is determined to keep it alive. Nicky doubts the scruffy bird will make it, but then Nicky has plenty else to worry about – a school bully, his first love, and the fact that everything is about to go very, very wrong. Rook has been nominated for a Carnegie Medal. When Anthony read passages from his books, he portrayed his characters so well and students realised that boring reading was no more! At the end of the lectures, students applauded him. Finally, Anthony answered questions from the students and gave away six books to the students who asked the best questions.

As a member of Collingwood College’s community, we are writing to you to let you know of the excellent training opportunities available to you with us and I can think of no better place to train than here or in one of our partner schools. Collingwood College is committed to ensuring that we have high quality teachers for all of our students and in order to fulfil this, we need to train and develop undergraduates. Whether you are in your final year of your degree course, or you have been working in industry for a number of years, you are eligible to apply for one of our teacher training courses. The teacher training bursaries have been announced and for some shortage courses, trainees could be eligible for up to £26,000 and £15,000 for English. We are really proud at Collingwood College to be the lead school in our own School Direct alliance which is a School and University based teacher training programme whereby trainees qualify within the school year with QTS and/or a PGCE. We work with the University of Reading and four other schools: Kings International School, The Winston Churchill School, The Magna Carta School and Bishop David Brown. The beauty of the School Direct course is that you are recruited by the school that you will be placed in and you can therefore have more ownership of your own training Programme.

Art and Design Biology Chemistry Physics Maths English Computing Geography Art and Design History Modern Foreign Languages PE.

We are also part of Teach Surrey, a partnership of Surrey based schools providing School Centered Initial Teacher Training accredited by the highly respected and well-established George Abbot SCITT. You could train here at Collingwood College, supported by an experienced Mentor on a training placement, within a wide range of subjects and all three key stages. We have an excellent success rate and hope that you might go on to be one of them. For further information please look on our website or email me directly on [email protected] to arrange a visit.

ART STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN CREATIVE TECHNOLOGY DAY

On Monday 26 March a group of Years 9 and 10 Art students were invited to Wellington College for the day to take part in a range of activities that might inspire them to pursue their love of art in the future. They were divided into five groups where they rotated around the different sessions and worked with different schools.

Pearson College London gave the students an opportunity to take part in an interactive workshop showcasing careers in VFX, computer animation and game art. Ravensbourne University provided advice, support and information on various careers and further education in all areas of creative arts. Advansys gave the students an opportunity to look at aspects of web design and the varied skillsets involved. The Bush Consultancy demonstrated and allowed the students to experience the use of visualisation and modelling software in the architecture and construction industries. Finally Joshua Design Group gave the students an

opportunity to investigate all aspects of social media and marketing and the changing landscape of advertising. The Collingwood students enjoyed the day and had this to say: “We loved participating in the Joshua Group ‘Instagram’ session. We were able to advertise a product using our own ideas.” “Pearsons visual effects were amazing.” “The chocolate chip cookies were very good!!!” “Wellington College is amazing. It’s like a different World.” “I think I now want to be an architect.” “I loved the experience. Thank you.” “I have been given new ideas about future careers.”

ORDERING SHORTS FROM BRENDA’S

If you would like your child to wear shorts after the May half-term break, please ensure that you visit Brenda’s by the end of the first week in May to guarantee receiving them in time.

Brenda’s will be restocking as shorts are purchased but there could be a delay between deliveries if everyone comes in to buy them at the end of May.

YEAR 8 STUDENTS ‘UNLOCK POTENTIAL’ AT WELLINGTON COLLEGE

On Tuesday 27 March fifteen Year 8 students travelled to Wellington College to take part in an ‘Unlocking Potential’ day. The day consisted of the students rotating around 5 different sessions whilst also experiencing the delights of the College restaurant! The students were able to look at strategies for success, learning skills for study, well-being, how to cope with stress, how to improve confidence, different mindsets and resilience. They were also able to do some team-building activities. The presenters were very enthusiastic and dynamic. Many of them had written books about their specialism and were able to engage our students on the topics. Here are some of the comments made by students following the event:

“The ‘orange’ man Steve was amazing. He really helped me to understand how to use my memory.” “The leaders were all really enthusiastic and friendly.” “Very good food and nosh!” “The leaders were good, loved the activities and the food was amazing!” “I gained useful information about how to study.” “Exciting activities and useful information. Thank you.” The students represented Collingwood extremely well and were a pleasure to take on the trip. Thank you.

YEAR 7 GIRLS ENJOY SPORTS HALL ATHLETICS

On Wednesday 28 March six of my Year 7 students took part in the annual Year 7 Sports Hall athletics event at SJB in Woking. This was a very last minute decision to enter due to it being Academic Review day and I must thank the girls and also parents for giving up their time to take the students to the event to compete. The girls performed fantastically well without any practice before the event and were a credit to the College. Looking at the talent that was on show I have very high hopes for the Summer Athletics programme. Team: Chloe Connor, Freya McCormack, Andrea Samuels, Blythe O’Mahoney, Connie Goodchild and Lyv Stevenson.

EXAM CERTIFICATES

Exam certificate postage payment is now available on ParentPay. Please ensure payment is made as soon as possible to ensure your child receives their exam certificates from the Summer 2018 season. This is of particular importance for those students in Years 11 and 13 who are leaving the College. To avoid certificates being lost in transit or left crumpled at the bottom of a school bag, we encourage payment to be made for Years 9 and 10 too. For those that make payment for postage, exam certificates are usually despatched in December using Royal Mail’s ‘Signed For’ service. Certificates will be required by future employers and further education institutes. If you don’t have your certificates when you need them in later life, the exam boards can provide a replacement statement of results but it is very costly.
