Editorial/Presidents Message

Dear ISIR Member,

To survive a society must continue to attract new members and it is therefore with great pleasure I welcome those who have just joined the ISIR. I urge allmembers of the ISIR to encourage others to join and make the society even more vibrant. Whilst work from the committee of a society is vital, so to is theparticipation by members and we hope that we will see as many ISIR members as possible at the 10th ICIRD in July. I have always found ICIRD meetings to be academically stimulating as well as excellent social events and the meeting this year promises to be as good as ever. However, the success of a meeting ultimately relies on the participation of delegates.

Several years ago I attended an ICIRD meeting in which I invited the ISIR to meet in South Africa. At the time I discovered that several other

society members were also bidding to host the conference. This competition to host the conference is the mark of very active research communities and I found that I had to persist with my bid to convince the committee that I was capable of making the conference work. For some reason competition to host ICIRD meetings has declined and I would encourage ISIR members to offer their services to the society by bidding to host a meeting. Whilst this is hard work, and you may not have your bid accepted immediately, it is worth persisting, as conference organization is very rewarding. A final way in which members can ensure a thriving society is by publishing in Invertebrate Reproduction and Development. Let us see everyone becoming involved. I hope to see you all in Newcastle!

Finally on behalf of the ISIR I would like to congratulate Professor Motonori Hoshi on his election as President of the International Union of Biological Sciences. Professor Hoshi is a long- standing member of the ISIR, one of its former Presidents and organizer of the largest conference we have ever had. Well done!

Call for newsletter items

Newsletters clearly need information. The next newsletter will be produced in the second half of the year and will contain a report back on the Newcastle meeting. The newsletter, however, needs more information than this so please let the newsletter editors have information! Let us have your opinions – we will print you letters so use the newsletter as a forum to voice you views. What else should the ISIR be doing for its members? What would you like to see the newsletter contain? Send newsletter items etc. to either [email protected] or [email protected]

25th Anniversary of ISIR

This year the International Society of Invertebrate Reproduction can celebrate its 25th birthday. Invertebrate reproduction and development are research areas, which are not less important today than 25 years ago. New methods und techniques allow exciting approaches and solutions one could not dream of 25 years ago. During our Newcastle meeting there will be time to look back, to remember the first years of our society and to discuss its future in view of the latest research progress presented at our conference.

10th ICIRD – Newcastle University, U.K., July 2004

The 10th ICIRD will take place at the Life Science Centre in the centre of Newcastle from Sunday 18th of July (evening registration and ice breaker) to Friday 23rd of July 2004, when the conference will close at midday.

There will be three and a half days of scientific sessions, a 1 day excursion on the Wednesday and evening events including the conference dinner on Thursday night which will take place at the Great Hall at Durham Castle overlooking the city of Durham. County Durham is known as the land of the Prince Bishops (Bishops were allowed to raise an army) and is steeped in history. This promises to be a night to remember.

Five main scientific themes are planned: Fertilization and reproductive strategies; Comparative aspects of regional organization and development; Biorhythmicity and seasonality; Oogenesis and spermatogenesis; Chemical communication. In addition there will be a "Hot topics in reproduction and development" session.

Delegates can find out more about the conference (e.g. maps of venues, how to get to the venues etc.) register, book accommodation and excursions via the conference web site:

http://www.ncl.ac.uk/icird2004

e-mail [email protected] or [email protected]

Please note the following deadlines and conference fees:

EARLY BIRD (prior to March 31st) £140; Standard ISIR member £175; Standard non-ISIR member £190; Student £95; Conference dinner £35.

Registration fee includes welcome reception, lunch on Monday, morning and afternoon teas and coffees, programme and abstracts.

Deadline for abstracts is March 31st.

Grants for Students The ISIR will sponsor up to five students to the 10th ICIRD. Sponsorship includes the cost of registration and up to six nights accommodation in a university residence only. Sponsorship is on a competitive basis and students must send a letter of application to the secretary of the ISIR, Dr Jeff Ram ([email protected]). In order to qualify students must be intending to present a platform paper. The application should be accompanied by an abbreviated CV, letter of motivation, and an abstract. The deadline for applications is March 31st. Results of applications will be made known towards the end of April.^

This year's conference dinner will be taking place at the Great Hall of {HYPERLINK "http://www.durhamcastle.com"}Durham Castle. Construction on the castle began in 1072, just after the Norman Conquest, under the orders of William the Conqueror, and it is a typical example of a motte and bailey fortification. It was initially used to control the rebellious Saxons who populated northern England. From the 11th century onwards it was used as the seat of power of the Prince Bishops appointed by the British Crown to rule the Palatinate of Durham, the remote area of northern England vulnerable to attack from the Scots.

A note from the IRD editors

Invertebrate Reproduction & Development: Resurgence of a

Discipline!

We write to you to bring you up to date with recent developments. We are making a significant change in the relationship between the International Society of Invertebrate Reproduction and its official journal, InvertebrateReproduction & Development. In the future, members of the Executive Committee of the ISIR will automatically be offered places on the Editorial Board of the Journal. Other new members are also being brought onto the Board. We believe these changes will strengthen both the Journal and the Society.

We also write to ask you to play your part in developing our scientific discipline to which you are a contributor, and the related scientific community of which you are a member. You can do this in two ways.

First, please continue, renew and increase your support for the journal, Invertebrate Reproduction &Development, now in its twenty fifth year of publication. Put simply:

The Society can have a successful and high quality journal only if society members give

it their strong support!

You can do this by submitting some of your best work to the editors each year (yes, the occasional paper to Nature, Science, etc., is permitted!). The stature of the Journal is almost exclusively determined by the calibre and amount of material offered to it for publication. For their part, the editors and publisher will make a renewed effort to process manuscripts with efficiency, courtesy, and understanding. You can also support the Journal by subscribing to it on a personal basis or - even better - getting the library of your institution to take it. Details are available on request from the Publishers (see below).

Bid to Host the 11th ICIRD in Panama

During the upcoming 10th ICIRD meeting Rachel Collin will present a bid to

host the 11th ICIRD meeting at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute

(STRI) in Panama during 2007. This would be the first ICIRD meeting in Latin

America and would attract a number of participants new to the society. The

venue would be a conference-equipped hotel in Panama City. Rates for such

hotels currently start at $60US/night and there is a range of hotels to choose

from for accommodation. Panama City is served numerous international air

carriers with direct flights from Los Angeles, Miami and several other US

cities. Panama is quite safe for tourists, the currency is the US dollar, and the

water throughout the majority of the country is potable. Panama city has a

rich history and the country offers a wide variety of marine and terrestrial

habitats. Field-trips could include (1) snorkeling on Caribbean reefs, (2)

hiking and bird watching in lowland tropical forest, and (3) tour of historic

Panama City and the Panama Canal.

Suggestions for symposia are welcomed by the organizers. Members who wish

to suggest themes or speakers for symposia should contact Dr. Rachel Collin
