The work – which was about 4 km in total, was completed mid-August.The Highway 57 proj-ect is part of the 2012-13 Highways and In-

frastructure budget of $581.5 million. This is the fi rst year in the province’s four-year commitment to invest $2.2 billion into the provincial transporta-tion system.

Motorists are remind-ed to slow to 60 km/hr when passing workers and equipment in the Orange Zone. For more information about con-struction zones, visit: www.highways.gov.

Saskatchewan residents and visitors from the province’s neighbours to the east, Manitoba, enjoy the beauty of the lakes, trails, golfi ng and campgrounds this out-door recreational mecca offers.

“This year’s slate of nominees is an inter-esting combination of established businesses with proven achieve-ment records and more recent enterprises that truly show the innova-tive nature of the latest generation of Saskatch-ewan entrepreneurs.” This year will mark the 29th anniversary of the ABEX Awards, Saskatchewan’s largest celebration of private sector achievement. The event is hosted by the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce, and pre-sented by Conexus Cred-it Union. The ABEX is open to any private sec-tor business registered within the province, re-gardless of size, location or industry. The 2012 ABEX gala, set for October 20th at the Delta Hotel in Re-gina, is themed as a tribute to commemorate the 130th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Tickets

for the event are on sale now at www.saskcham-ber.com. Announcement of the 2012 recipients of the Hall of Fame and Busi-

ness Leader of the Year will be made prior to the event. The Business of the Year ABEX Award will be announced at the event October 20.

With the new school year underway, the Canadian Centre for Child Protection wants parents to put some-thing on their checklist besides the usual sta-tionary supplies required by students. The Canadian Centre is urging parents and teachers to add child personal safety to the list and use the Billy Brings his Buddies pro-gram to teach children the Buddy System safe-ty strategy. “When children learn and use the buddy sys-tem they reduce their likelihood of being vic-timized and increase their personal safety,” says Lianna McDonald, Executive Director of the Canadian Centre for Child Protection. “Research shows that children who go places alone are at a greater risk of being harmed, so it’s important for parents to talk to their kids about the impor-tance of always bring-ing a buddy along.

Teachers can also help reinforce this safe-ty strategy by using the Billy Brings his Buddies program with students throughout the school year.” Sponsored by Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the Billy Brings his Buddies pro-gram is a part of the Canadian Centre’s Kids in the Know interactive child personal safety program for students from Kindergarten to Grade Nine. The Billy initiative is for Grade One students, and includes a website (billybuddy.ca) where parents and educators can access an online storybook, interactive games and other activi-ties to help them teach young children about the buddy system. Teachers can also download a free copy of the Billy Brings his Buddies Grade One Teacher Kit, which includes a lesson plan and poster for the class-room as well as at-home

activities to send home to parents to complete with their child. “Whether it’s walking to and from school or playing at the play-ground, teaching chil-dren to never go places alone and to always bring a buddy along is essential,” adds Tom Buckmaster, President of Honeywell Hometown Solutions. “We are proud to partner with the Canadian Centre for Child Protection to bring this important safety program to schools and homes across Canada.” The Canadian Centre and Honeywell Hometown Solutions want to make sure that back-to-school excite-ment is paired with the teaching of strategies that will help children stay safe all year round. They encourage all Grade One teachers and parents of young children to visit billy-buddy.ca to learn more.

Ed, my neighbor next door, was really indif-ferent when I wanted to tell him about our visit to The Grotto, in Portland, Oregon. The more I tried to tell him about it, the less he wanted to hear. I finally gave up when he observed that a 62 acre garden that doesn’t sell produce is ridiculous. Ed scoffed at hearing about a garden for out-door summer church services and a place of solitude, peace and prayer. “I bet only a few weird people like you have ever visited it,” Ed asserted. I did not reply to Ed’s assertion. Instead, I offered him an apple and some plums from my garden and a nice big red tomato. Ed’s dis-taste for gardens, big or small, doesn’t trouble him when offered fruit and vegetables that he likes to eat. Why it doesn’t bother him that they are from a despised garden I’ll never under-stand. The only valid garden for Ed is one that provides vegetables or fruit. Gardens pro-ducing flowers and shrubs are a waste of time and money. Don’t ever tease Ed that he may end up gardening as a hobby in retire-ment, as his reply to you will need to be cen-sored. The Bible speaks of a garden in Jerusalem known as the Garden of Gethsemane. It was a

garden of olives trees where Jesus took his disciples to pray. It offered Him a place of solitude, peace and prayer. It became the place of His betrayal by Judas and His arrest. It is an ever-changing world, but the more it changes the more it stays the same. Another name for a grotto is a cave. In ancient times, often caves had a spring of water in them. In the Roman era, homes were built beside the caves with a supply of water. Wealthy homes often had gardens developed by the grotto and stat-ues of their gods and goddesses were found there. They were places of beauty, solitude, peace and prayer. The Christian world has had many grottos, shrines, and gardens through the years also. The Grotto at Portland, Oregon is a famous present day one. Father Ambrose Meyer was serving in the Archdiocese of Portland in 1923 and found prop-erty ideal for his dream of developing a beauti-ful garden of prayer. The asking price was

$48,000.00, but Father Mayer offered all he had which was $3,000.00. His offer was accepted and in the base of the 110 foot basalt cliff, a grotto or cave was carved out of the stone cliff for the altar. Above the altar was placed a full-sized replica of Michelangelo’s Pieta. In 1983, The Grotto was designated a National Sanctuary. Through the years, more than ten million visitors of all faiths have marveled at this natural garden in the huge Pacific coastal trees. We know that Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. A beautiful church or gar-den can encourage us to pray, but Jesus gives us the guidance that is most important. He says, “When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep babbling (with many words); your Father knows what you need before you ask it.”

According to the province’s week-ly crop update, signifi cant harvest progress was made this week due to warm and dry weather. Producers now have 38 per cent of the 2012 crop combined and 33 per cent is swathed or ready to straight combine, accord-ing to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. The fi ve-year (2007-2011) provincial harvest prog-ress average for this time of year is 26 per cent combined and 32 per cent swathed or ready to straight com-bine. Harvest progress varies across the province. The southwest has 69 per cent combined, the southeast 56 per cent, the east-central region 28 per cent, the west-central region 23 per cent, the northeast 14 per cent and the northwest 12 per cent. Ninety-nine per cent of winter wheat, 24 per cent of spring wheat, 45 per cent of durum, 29 per cent of barley, 31 per cent of canola, 65 per cent of mustard,

73 per cent of lentils and 86 per cent of the fi eld peas have been combined. Across the province, topsoil mois-ture on cropland is rated as six per cent surplus, 64 per cent adequate, 25 per cent short and fi ve per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as two per cent surplus, 59 per cent adequate, 27 per cent short and 12 per cent very short. Rainfall this week ranged from trace amounts in the majority of the prov-ince to 34 mm in the Dorintosh area. Some areas of the province received strong winds that have blown cano-la swaths across fi elds and shelled standing crops. Hail has caused some damage in the west-central region. Farmers are busy harvesting, seed-ing winter cereals, hauling bales and controlling weeds on harvested acres. Follow the 2012 Crop Report on Twitter at @SKGovAg.

Concrete DrivewaysConcrete DrivewaysParking Lots • Patios • Sidewalks

6 STEPS TO SUCCESSA concrete driveway represents an investment that is designed to last a lifetime, providedproper procedures are followed. The average homeowner will not normally be able to install a concrete driveway without expert assistance. It is strongly recommended that a qualifi ed contractor be engaged to ensure a satisfactory job.To provide a quality driveway, the following guidelines should be carefully observed.(Concrete should be placed between April and September. If placed outside this time frame, additional precautions will be necessary.)

1. DETERMINE THE REQUIRED THICKNESS (MINIMUM)

a) For cars and pick-ups 100 mmb) For light trucks 125 mmc) For occasional heavier trucks 150 mm(placed on competent subgrade)

2. SITE PREPARATIONConcrete can be placed directly on uniform subgrade after removing the topsoil, or on deteriorated asphalt pavement. Excavate or bring to grade as necessary using granular ‘A’ as leveling course (typically 100 mm).a) Make sure subgrade is uniform, well compacted

and contains no frozen material.b) Slope away from buildings at 2%.c) Install isolation joints using asphalt impregnated

board strips (see Figure 1).d) To form driveway, use stiff wood forms kept in

position with stakes not more than 1 metre apart. Top of stakes should be fl ush with, or slightly below the top of form at fi nished grade [see screeding – section 4(e)].

e) Plan exact position of concrete joints [see part 6] before starting the project and mark the locations on the formwork prior to concrete placement.

FIGURE 1

DO NOT ALLOW power fl oats or trowelsto be used. Overworking the fresh concrete causes scaling. This extra fi nishing is not required and will reduce the durability of the slab.

3. PLAN YOUR REQUIREMENTS FOR LABOUR AND MATERIAL

a) Concrete: Class C-2; 32 MPa; 0.45 w/cm ratio; 5%-8% air entrainment; 100 mm slump (maximum), for all exterior slabs on grade as required by CAN/CSA-A23.1 & OBC using quality proven aggregate. 48 hours advance notice of delivery should be provided.

b) For coloured concrete, it is recommended that the colour be integrally mixed with the concrete at the time of batching. Air entrainment (5%-8%) must be measured after the colour has been mixed in.

c) Make sure adequate labour is on hand when concrete will be delivered – normally a minimum of 3 persons, but more for larger jobs or when placing on hot, dry days.

d) Check list of tools and materials needed: • large roll of plastic sheeting (protection from rain)• wheelbarrows and shovels • water supply for curing and wetting subgrade• long handled bullfl oat about 120 mm wide

minimum (preferably wood or magnesium for air entrained concrete)

• straight rigid board for screeding • vapour retardant concrete broom for texturing • curing materials (burlap and water or chemical

curing compounds).

4. ORDER AND PLACE CONCRETEa) Dampen the subgrade without leaving freestand-

ing water. Oil the forms before placing concrete.b) A 100 mm slump is adequate for placement.

Adding water to increase the slump or workability has a very detrimental effect on both strength and durability of the concrete.

c) Distribute concrete using wheelbarrows (or directly from concrete mixer truck if possible); use shovels to bring to rough grade avoiding segregation.

d) Strike off the concrete to fi nish grade by using a straight board on edge between the forms – use “sawing” motion. Tap forms to consolidate the concrete.

e) Screeding: Smooth the surface using the long handled bullfl oat (use edging tool to fi nish edges) – DO NOT USE STEEL TROWELS.

f) For fi nal non-slip fi nish use a concrete broom, burlap drag, magnesium fl oat or impressed mat fi nish.

g) IF PLACING ON A HOT, DRY OR WINDY DAY, TAKE SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

• protect fresh concrete from rapid moisture loss by covering with plastic after screeding to keep surface moist, or use wind screens, fog nozzles, vapour retardants, etc.

• be prepared for fast setting during warm weather• protect hardening concrete by curing concrete

immediately after fi nal fi nishh) During cold weather, longer time is required

before performing fi nal fi nish. Do not perform fi nal fi nish while concrete is still bleeding.

NOTE: Improper procedures can result in a poor quality job.

5. CURING AND SEALINGa) For proper curing, moisture must be retained in

the slab for an extended period. Curing must start immediately following fi nal fi nish and is accomplished by using:

(i) curing membranes/compounds, which can be easily rolled or sprayed on as soon as the fi nishing operations are complete. MAKE SURE THAT THE MANUFACTURERS’ RECOMMENDED DOSAGE AND COVERAGE IS OBSERVED.OR(ii) wet burlap, soaking hoses, waterproof paper or polyethylene fi lm to keep the surface CONSTANTLY wet for 7 days.Do not place hoses on surface.b) DO NOT APPLY DE-ICERS (e.g. SALT)

UNTIL THE CONCRETE HAS GONE THROUGH ITS FIRST WINTER. DO NOT USE AMMONIUM BASED DE-ICERS AT ANY TIME.

c) If the concrete is placed in the late part of the year below 5°C, use polyethylene fi lm or other cold weather curing methods. An air drying period of one month after the curing period is required before de-icing salts can be applied. A PENETRATING SEALER can be applied as caution against chloride penetration.

d) Under normal conditions the concrete may be sealed with a PENETRATING SEALER according to the recommendations of the manufacturer:

(i) after 30 days if a curing membrane has been used

(ii) after a period of air drying if water-cured.

6. CONTROL JOINTSAs concrete ages initially, it shrinks because of water evaporation and cooling of the concrete. CRACKS will occur at random locations unless they are controlled in a pre-determined manner.a) Control joints (preferably sawn) shall be:(i) cut as soon as possible without pulling the

aggregate out, usually within 4 to 12 hours after concrete has been placed (can be much longer in cold weather).

(ii) cut 1/4 the thickness of the slab – this is the minimum depth.

(iii) not more than 3 m apart for 100 mm thick slab, 4 m apart for 125 mm slabs, and 4.5 m apart for 150 mm or thicker slabs.

(iv) control joints should be cut in a square pattern.
