Youth work monitored If you are aged 16 or under you need to know there are provincial laws in place when it comes to enter-ing the working world. The province is reminding Saskatchewan youth aged 14 and 15 are that they must complete Saskatchewan’s Young Worker Readiness Certificate Course (YWRCC) and abide by Saskatchewan’s Minimum Age Employment laws if they want to work during the school year. Employers are responsible for ensuring that each young worker pro-

vides them with a YWRCC certificate, which must be kept on file. Employers must also adhere to the labour stan-dards, occupational health and safety, and minimum age employment laws. “As school is a priority, it is impor-tant that youth with part-time jobs are aware of the minimum age laws,” Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Minister Don Morgan says. “There are limits on the hours per week they can work and the start and end times of their shifts.”

Ed, my neighbor next door, has been watch-ing me pick up apples every day. Our one apple tree is covered with apples. It has been the first to ripen, and to shed its apples, on the ground each day. When I brought up another pail of apples to the house yesterday, Ed called out, “I’ll tell you how to make cra-bapple wine if you want to know. You can use your regular apples to make it.” I declined his offer. Ed hadn’t expected me to take him up on his recipe for home-made apple wine. When I mentioned freezing the apples as apple sauce, and baking a pie or two his attitude became a little eager. He said, “I don’t care for apple sauce, but a good apple pie is just about unbeatable.” “Do you want some

apples so Ruby can make a pie with them?” I offered. Ed refused my offer saying regret-fully that Ruby won’t bake pies because he eats them too fast. Ruby claims she would have to lock them in a timed vault to have a pie last more than an hour. Hearing Ed was under a pie band, I asked him if he wanted a piece of pie that I had baked. He was torn. He loves pie but hated the thought that I was being nice to him. His stomach won out. When I presented Ed with his piece of pie, he

was tentative. He asked, “Where’s the pie crust on the top? Why does it have dream whip on it instead? I haven’t seen apple pie like this before!” he stammered. “Just try it Ed, it is good pie,” I assured him. The first bite was hesitant, but his next one was eager, and in seconds the piece of pie was a thing of the past. In spite of hating to do it, Ed did confess that his piece of pie tasted surprisingly good. Unfortunately, he didn’t stop there as he also said, “I can eat

anyone’s cooking, except my own. Doesn’t matter how bad it is, I can usually clean it up.” One thing that I real-ly like about my neigh-bor Ed is that, he speaks his mind. I could never say he hides what he thinks. You always know where you stand with Ed. Most of all, he never says anything about you, that he hasn’t already said to your face. Ed is not one to flatter folks. He does not pretend to be some-one that he is not, to impress others. God is never fooled by our outward appear-ances. Jesus had a dis-like for religious lead-ers who were fastidious about outward appear-ances and rituals. For example, they were concerned about the neglect of ceremonial washing before meals, but not about the greed and wickedness hidden

inside their hearts. God knows if we act in jus-tice and love and if we give to the poor. It is good to give a tenth or tithe to God, but not while still being greedy and wicked at heart. Religious leaders in Jesus’ day loved to claim the most impor-tant seats in the syna-gogues. What does God see us claiming for our-selves before others? What does he see going on inside our hearts?

Young workers under the age of 16 must have the consent of their parent or guardian to work; are not allowed to work after 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; cannot work before school starts in the morning; and cannot work more than 16 hours during a school week. The YWRCC is a mandatory ready-for-work course that teaches youth about occupational health and safe-ty, labour standards laws and their rights and duties as employees. GETTING READY – The Health Foundation’s Farming for Health program is moving into the fall, with the local implement dealers donating time and equipment to help swath the field.

This September, con-servation champions across Saskatchewan have a chance to win big while celebrating Ducks Unlimited Canada’s (DUC) 75th anniversary. The DUC Conservation Champions Lottery is a new and innovative way to raise funds for wetland conservation. The lottery features many prizes, including a $75,000 cash Grand Prize, a $5,000 cash Early Bird prize, and over 90 additional

prizes. The proceeds will stay in Saskatchewan to help protect and conserve the marshes and ponds throughout the province. In total, only 9,000 tickets will be sold. The Early Bird Draw will take place on November 14, 2013, followed by all regular draws on December 3.
