Studies show that busy traffic routes lit to a higher category with an even lighting distribution help to decrease the risk of accidents occurring. A LED luminaire, such as the Teceo, with the flexibility to reduce energy costs by precisely controlling the direction of the light, is an ideal solution for lighting busy roads. The Royal Borough of Greenwich certainly agreed.

MAXIMISE YOUR ENERGY SAVINGS ON LED LUMINAIRE REPLACEMENT PROGRAMMES FOR NO EXTRA COST

36

For those considering switching their stock of HID luminaires over to LEDs, there are often significant energy savings on offer. It is also worth considering the additional savings available if the LED luminaires are programmed to switch on and off at 10 Lux, rather than 35 Lux.

DECEMBER 2013

For authorities with large stocks of older HID technology who want to explore the use of LEDs for residential street lighting, the Axia offers a cost effective, high quality option. We spoke with two London Boroughs to see how their LED trials went, which compared our Axias to 70W SON lanterns.

“As the end of another year approaches, it is worth reflecting on the speed at which the exterior lighting industry continues to change. This change is being driven by the application and uptake of new technologies to combat the pressures of rising energy costs and the need to offer the end user the right lighting levels, on a stretched budget.”

“Sales of LED luminaires continue to gather momentum and are beginning to outstrip those of HID in some areas. At Urbis Schréder we are continuing to invest in the development of LED technology to ensure we can meet our customers’ needs.”

“For those looking to enhance the built environment and bring town centres back to life, our new SCULPcollection of LED floodlights offers the very best in terms of flexibility and photometric performance.”

“The arrival of the Ampera LED luminaire in 2014 also offers a high quality lighting solution for a wide range of applications, at an even more affordable price. We see the Ampera as similar to our ZX lantern, only this time the luminaire uses the latest LED technology and a key priority is conserving energy by providing only the ‘right light’ on every scheme.”

“In the quest to offer our customers the optimal solution, we are also starting a debate on whether LED luminaires should be switched on at 10 Lux rather than 35 or 55 Lux. Your thoughts on this would be welcomed.”

“Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!”

Sky’s wind turbine at their West London office was constructed during 2012 and is now one of the key landmarks visible as you enter the capital along the M4 corridor. The turbine towers over 50m above ground level and its unique curved column support really makes it stand out. The turbine generates 133MGW per annum, enough to cover all of Sky’s broadcasting office’s power needs. To make a feature of their wind turbine and ensure their brand presence was highlighted after dark, Sky decided to invest in new lighting. Using LEDs to minimise energy consumption also fitted neatly with the low carbon energy produced by the wind turbine.

Chris Allum, Managing Director of Electrical Management Services, worked closely with us throughout the project to install the lighting. He commented, “we looked at a number of options for lighting the turbine, but it was Aquila’s1 Neos that gave us the optimal lighting solution for the lowest capital outlay.”

“This was a challenging project from start to finish. Firstly we had to ensure we met the Civil Aviation Authority’s requirements, in order to prevent the turbine lighting being confused as it is so close to Heathrow’s airport flight path.”

“To resolve this we carefully positioned the Neos units close to the turbine’s base in order to create a uniformed wash of light over the entire structure. This set-up meant the units were hidden from view and would not produce any glare as aircraft descended. By ensuring a uniform lighting distribution it also removed any potential ‘hot spots’ on the turbine, which could be confusing to approaching aircraft.”

The first design involved installing eight Neos units at ground level to illuminate the front two sides of the turbine. However, due to the shape of the curved structure and the fact that it is made of perforated metal sheets, it meant the lighting design required alterations to achieve the required impact.

Chris explained, “the final solution involved positioning 16 Neos units around the turbine to light its surface with three units mounted internally. The use of internal units prevented any odd shadow effects previously visible through the perforated sheets. The impact is superb.”

WHEN STEVE HOLFORD, HEAD OF ENGINEERING AND ENERGY AT BRITISH SKY BROADCASTING, COMMENTED THAT “RENEWABLE POWER HAS NEVER LOOKED SO SEXY”, IT WAS CLEAR THAT OUR NEOS LED FLOODLIGHTS HAD DONE A GOOD JOB.

08 www.urbis-schreder.com

To ensure the integrity of the system, we supplied Electrical Management Services with the 19 Neos units prefabricated with the cables and fitted with 96 LEDs. Each unit is populated with red, green, blue and amber LEDs and, when mixed together, the colours produced complement the structure’s surface material and match Sky’s corporate colours. The colours are set-up to scroll from the bottom of the turbine to the top, over a two minute period.

Chris stated, “as we wanted to avoid drivers becoming too distracted as they passed by on the M4, the team analysed the average speed of the traffic. This allowed programming of the Pharos LPC1 DMX controller to ensure that around two subtle colour changes would occur as a vehicle passes by. No doubt regular commuters will start keeping a quick eye out for the turbine lighting as they pass, which will help to lift Sky’s brand presence.”

To offer the maximum amount of flexibility, Sky also has the ability to remotely alter the colour change sequence of each individual unit.

Chris said, “for example, Sky can pre-programme the colours to match those of the teams taking part in a key sporting event, or use just green on St Patrick’s day. The whole team deserves great credit for delivering an innovative project which has delighted a major brand name.”

Mark Beck, who managed the project for Sky, said “this was always going to be a project where we needed to test the design on site. However, the team at Electrical Management Services and Aquila1 were excellent at working with us and altering the design to achieve the best possible outcome.”

11www.urbis-schreder.com

The SCULPcollection is a fresh approach to using LED technology for architectural lighting. We spoke with Andy Harrison, Urbis Schréder’s Mechanical Product Leader, about the range’s development and the benefits it offers to users.

So Andy, what is the SCULPcollection all about?

“The SCULPcollection is a new family of LED light projectors. One of the key advantages is that the projectors complement each other in terms of their design, the way they are controlled, the colour balance you can achieve and the applications they are suitable for. In summary, they offer a full package of architectural lighting options for users.”

Does the SCULPcollection offer anything different for the illumination market?

“Indeed. The whole range is designed to utilise the latest LED technology whilst producing a lighting distribution similar to those delivered by HID floodlights. Although LEDs are regularly used for floodlighting, you can end up with a brighter concentration of light at the centre of a lit area, with levels then falling away more sharply outside of this.” “The SCULP’s photometry allows for softer edges and a more even distribution of light. We also have an asymmetric option, meaning we can offer customers the advantages of both LED and HID technologies.” Are there lots of lighting options available?

“Yes, the SCULPcollection was developed to offer the user the maximum amount of flexibility. The aim is to deliver the optimal distribution by directing the right level of light precisely where it is required. Or as we say, providing the ‘right light’.

“To achieve this, the range is fitted with external diffusers which can be easily altered to change the lighting distribution to fit the scheme’s requirements. Importantly, as the filters are external, there is no need to compromise the integrity of the base unit each time a change is made. Anti-glare louvres can also be supplied should further control of the light be required, such as preventing spill onto a window.”

“As the majority of the range can be rotated up to 90 degrees, this allows each unit to be mounted and angled to match a structure’s façade. For example, if you are lighting a narrow recess and are limited with where you can place the fitting, having this level of flexibility gives you more options when directing the light to exactly where it is needed.”

Is the range easy to install?

“It is and this is another important aspect we considered. In particular, we have ensured that the process of mounting and aiming the floodlights is simplified by providing orientation markings on the bracket. This way the installer can simply line up the markings to ensure the fitting is pointing in the correct direction first time.”

“Adding a new unit is easy because all the electrical connections are plug and socket so you don’t have to open the product during installation, you just plug it in and away you go.”

“The whole range can be wall fixed or pole mounted, with the SCULPflood and SCULPdot products also having a ground spike and extension arm to cater for a wide range of scenarios.”

Page 12: NEWS / PRODUCTS / DESIGN / INSTALLATIONS - … / PRODUCTS / DESIGN / INSTALLATIONS DECEMBER 2013 ... Sky’s wind turbine at their West London office ... of options for lighting the

12 www.urbis-schreder.com

Is the range compatible with the built environment?

“A key feature of the whole range is its ability to blend into its environment, be it a building or a bridge structure. This ensures the feature being lit remains the centrepiece, which is often a key element of any floodlighting scheme. The units are designed to look good at any angle though, should you want to take a closer look at them.”

What happens if you want to use the whole collection on one scheme?

“As the whole range uses the same connectivity, a DMX 512 controller, it means the user can control all the fittings from a central point. For example, you could have a number of SCULPdot units changing colour to highlight a sculpture and SCULPflood units washing the wall of a nearby building with a constant white light. This ‘plug and play’ functionality gives the user the flexibility to tailor the lighting over time to suit their specific requirements.” A dynamic setting offers tunable white light. This allows for a dynamic lighting effect on large scale buildings such as a cathedral.

And what about maintenance costs?

“The SCULPcollection is designed with effective thermal management as a top priority and we have taken great care to ensure that heat is effectively removed from the LEDs and drivers.

This helps to extend the life of all the components and ensures that the unit maintains its maximum output for as long as possible.”

“Being a Schréder product, the optical compartments are sealed to an IP66 rating. The units are also designed to operate in a temperature range from -20ºC to +50ºC, so they are easily able to withstand anything the UK weather can throw at us.”

“The use of LEDs and flexible photometry ensures that no ‘over lighting’ occurs, which also helps lower energy consumption over the lifetime of the scheme.”

Thanks Andy

The table highlights how the four products in the SCULPcollection can be used to cater for a wide range of floodlighting applications.

The dynamic illumination scheme for Grand Place in Brussels was inaugurated in November 2013. This LED solution was designed by Schréder using an earlier version of floodlighting technology. The Sculpcollection will provide similar lighting effects yet offer more control and dynamic lighting effects whilst significantly reducing energy consumption.

In addition, any luminaires incorporating the LensoFlex®2 photometric engine are now also using these LEDs. This includes the Neos range and a number of decorative luminaires.

Bryan Shortreed, our Project Engineer, explained why we have made this switch. “The use of these LEDs means that users now have 10% more flux for the same power consumption compared to the previous generation, both for neutral and cool white options.”

“All luminaires using these new LEDs now benefit from the improved colour rendering index of 70, which means that they easily meet the requirements of white light as described in BS5489-1:2013. This allows the use of S/P ratios to reduce lighting levels and power consumption.”

“The LEDs also offer better performance for longer, as the lumen output is maintained at a minimum of 90% after 100,000hrs, as compared to 70%. In addition, warranties for the luminaires incorporating these LEDs now run to 10 years as standard depending on application and installation conditions.”

We asked Jon Gibb, Urbis Schréder’s Product Development Manager, about how the Ampera can deliver this winning

combination. He explained, “the range is designed in line with our philosophy of providing the ‘right light’ for a

scheme.”

“This means giving the user the flexibility to meet a defined lighting level throughout a scheme using the

optimal number of LEDs. The ultimate aim is to remove any over lighting to reduce the number of units and lower

energy consumption to a minimum.”

As shown in the table, the Ampera range consists of three versions to cater for a wide range of urban and rural

external lighting applications.

Jon said, “the Ampera offers flexible photometry. Firstly, users can select from a range of the latest CREE XPG LEDs. You can also use a wide variety of modules from 8, 16, 24 or even up to 64 LEDs per PCB. This allows the designer to optimise lighting distribution and save energy. For example, you can have just 8 LEDs in the Mini and up to 128 in the Maxi version.”

The Ampera range is also equipped with the latest LensoFlex®2 photometric engine, which now offers 6 new options to cater for narrow and wide roads. Replacing the photometric engine to take advantage of new technology is straightforward as no tools are required. Installation is made easier by using a universal slip over bracket to allow for side entry or post top mountings.

Jon stated, “energy consumption can be further reduced by using the basic options of custom dimming or motion detector sensors (PIR) and of course the Ampera is compatible with remote management systems. This includes our smart control system, Owlet.”

“Users can also rest assured that the Ampera is built to last with a IP66 rating. We also offer a seven year warranty for the mechanical, electrical components and LED engine.”

“All round its an excellent option, particularly for those looking to shorten the time it takes to recoup their investment when switching from HID to LED technology.”

Constructed in 1877, Albert Bridge is located in the centre of city. Eight elegant Gothic wrought iron columns support the rail overbridge, giving it a unique appeal. However, the poor quality of the lighting made it less appealing to pass under at night.

Middlesbrough City Council’s Street Lighting Engineer, Rob Warner, explained, “the original lighting illuminating the road and footways under the bridge emitted an odd blue glow and really needed replacing.”

“A key factor when selecting a new fitting was its ability to deliver the lighting levels required from the existing mounting positions. To explain, any new lighting positions would have required us to seek permission from Network Rail and that brings with it an additional cost implication.”

“As Urbis Schréder’s Neos floodlight comes with a stirrup bracket, it means that there is a wide range of mounting options available. This feature allowed us to use the existing lighting points, whilst ensuring an even lighting distribution over the road and footways.” In total, we supplied the Council with 30 Neos units, each fitted with 16 LEDs. These produce a white neutral light, which has dramatically improved visibility for pedestrians and drivers passing under the bridge. Rob stated, “the street lighting department also has a rationalisation programme running, which is designed to reduce the number of street lighting products we install and maintain. Having used the Neos to good effect on a nearby scheme in Zetland Square, continuing its use on this project fitted with this initiative.”

NEOS TRANSFORMS BRIDGE LIGHTING

EFFECTIVE FLOODLIGHTING CAN HELP TRANSFORM A BRIDGE’S STRUCTURE AT NIGHT AND PROVIDE A SAFER ENVIRONMENT FOR USERS. THE MOUNTING FLEXIBILITY OF OUR NEOS LED FLOODLIGHT PROVIDED THE IDEAL SOLUTION FOR UPGRADING THE LIGHTING UNDER ALBERT BRIDGE IN MIDDLESBROUGH, WHILST ALSO HELPING TO KEEP COSTS DOWN.

HOW OUR NEW CENTRAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM CAN HELP SAVE ENERGY AND REDUCE COSTS

23www.urbis-schreder.com

TO HELP CUSTOMERS LOWER ENERGY AND OPERATING COSTS WE ARE NOW OFFERING A FLEXIBLE CENTRAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (CMS) CALLED OWLET.

We asked our Project Engineer, Bryan Shortreed, to talk us through this new system.

So, Bryan, how does the Owlet system work?

“Owlet is, first and foremost, a CMS service. To set it up we put a node in each luminaire and you can have up to 150 nodes talking to a Segment Controller (SeCo) using radio waves. Each SeCo communicates back to the base using the Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM).”

“The user can then access the Owlet website and can view and control each SeCo and node. Similarly, the system can send information about failures and events, as and when the user requires the data.”

“We can provide customised versions of the Owlet systems ranging from a simple, pre-configured set-up to ‘high-end’ solutions. With the full system, users can control each light point individually at any time.”

Can you use Owlet on existing street lighting units?

“Yes you can, as the Owlet range can be used with all types of lamps and ballasts. The controller has an energy meter, switching and dimming functions, as well as using open protocol, reliable ZigBee communication and a fault reporting system.”

Is it easy to operate?

“If you have you ever booked a flight on the internetor used a search engine, then you should have no issues operating Owlet. Also, you do not need expensive controls, or a special computer structure to operate it.”

“The use of open technologies enables the system to be installed wherever you like and allows you to remain independent of suppliers and not get tied into using a manufacturer’s specific components.”

“The web interface can be used with any browser, either on a stationary or mobile device. All recorded data is saved in a MySQL database, which means that you can analyse the data over time, or make a comprehensive fault diagnosis when required.”

Once operational, is it time intensive to manage the Owlet system?

“We have worked hard to keep the time that users need to spend managing the system to a minimum. Once configured, the system works autonomously with only minimal supervision required, for example, when a failure is reported. A photocell and the integrated logic also ensure reliable lighting levels are maintained, even if individual components fail.”

“The stand-alone timed dimming function can be used in any electrical environment, although the sensor control option may need to be used on a metered supply. It is also possible, if required, to revisit the site and reprogram the units with a hand-held device.”

“We would advise users to start with a small scale trial of output along a typical street and then, once the potential savings are properly assessed, to roll out the system across their stock.”

What happens if you don’t want the high-end solution?

“In cases where users don’t require a complete monitoring and control solution a simple, effective stand-alone solution can be used instead. This is called Owlet LuCo-AD (Lumen Controller Autonomous Dimming).

“Using this system you can program each node to carry out certain functions, such as dimming between midnight and 6am to a certain lighting level. The user can ask for the nodes to be programmed before installation, or they can take a hand held device to site and carry out the task themselves.”

Page 24: NEWS / PRODUCTS / DESIGN / INSTALLATIONS - … / PRODUCTS / DESIGN / INSTALLATIONS DECEMBER 2013 ... Sky’s wind turbine at their West London office ... of options for lighting the

24 www.urbis-schreder.com

“Once programmed, each node will do the same thing every night. You could also programme the ballasts or drivers, which are widely available, but these are more difficult to re-program if you change your mind. Once set up, the system runs automatically and a server is not required.”

“A key advantage of the Owlet system is that you can revisit the site with your hand held device and re-program the nodes from the ground. For example, it offers the potential to easily change the dimming level or time, or you could reduce the lighting level following a change in the lighting standards. The idea behind this approach is to maximise energy savings for the user in the most cost effective way possible.” But, what if you want additional functionality from the stand alone system?

“There is a more dynamic version of LuCo-AD available where the user can program the nodes to respond to external inputs such as motion sensors. For example, there could be a motion sensor at the corner of the street and, when a person or vehicle is detected, the node in the luminaire connected to the sensor brings up the lighting level of that luminaire and also sends a signal to a pre-determined number of other nodes to do the same.”

“There is still no need in this system for a SeCo once programming is done, which keeps the operation of the system simple. However, in the UK most street lights are unmetered and to give an unmetered light a known energy usage you must know when it dims and for how long. This is possible for the LuCo-AD system without motion sensors, but not with them. If you do have a metered supply, then this approach could really help save you more energy.”

“In summary, Owlet gives the user the opportunity to provide sophisticated, intelligent lighting levels to meet the exact requirements of any road or area, whilst keeping their energy and operating costs down.”

For those who want to know, how does the web interface work?

“The segment controller (SeCo) is the link between the individual luminaire controllers and the web interface. Each SeCo controls a segment of up to 150 controllers and transmits any manual adjustments to them directly.”

“The SeCo records all data via ZigBee and sends it to the web server over a secure internet connection. What is more, it saves energy data for the entire

segment, enabling consumption to be invoiced precisely. The SeCo is easy to program and entirely customisable. Areas requiring different lighting, such as junctions or pedestrian crossings, can be put together in logical groups and operated simultaneously. This makes managing your lighting stock more simple.”

And how does the controller system work?

“Each controller (LuCo) is fitted directly to each luminaire and can be used in all electrical environments, such as 110-277V, 50/60Hz or a 0-10 volt/DALI dimming signal.”

“The controller receives the SeCo signals via ZigBee and then controls the ballast or driver accordingly. The controller continually measures the energy consumption, saves the values and forwards them to the SeCo. A photocell and the integrated astronomic clock ensure that the lamps switch on and off properly, even if it’s not possible to access the system.”

What other features are available with Owlet?

“The Autonomous Dimming (AD) controller built into every lamp saves its individual dimming profile. So, when in idle mode, the controller switches on to a time-dependent basic lighting level. It only switches to a high level of lighting when motion is detected. This allows the user to maximise energy savings, whilst ensuring a comfortable lighting level is maintained for the end user at all times.”

“The small LuCo AD controllers are easily integrated and, thanks to their universal design, can be used in all electrical environments. Sensors connected to the controller wirelessly control any number of other controllers in the network.”

Thanks Bryan.

ENERGY CONSUMPTION ALMOST CUT IN HALF ON A MAJOR CYCLE AND FOOTPATH NETWORK LED LIGHTING UPGRADE MILTON KEYNES COUNCIL IS MAKING A MULTI-MILLION POUND INVESTMENT TO IMPROVE CARRIAGEWAY SURFACING AND THE BUSY NETWORK OF ROUTES FOR PEDESTRIANS AND CYCLISTS THAT LINK THE KEY AREAS OF THE TOWN. OUR AXIA LED LUMINAIRE IS PROVIDING THEM WITH SIGNIFICANT ENERGY SAVINGS, WHILST DELIVERING A HIGH QUALITY LIGHT OUTPUT IN LINE WITH THEIR OBJECTIVES.

When Milton Keynes was built during the 1960’s, one of the key aims was that people should be able to move around the town on bike or foot using routes separate from motor vehicles. As a result a 330km network of red tarmac, known as the Redways, was built. The routes link all the residential estates to the town centre, parks and industrial areas and are lit at night by around 10,000 fittings.

Forty years on, the Council are in the process of upgrading the infrastructure to create two ‘super Redway’ routes. One is set to cross the town East to West and the other North to South.

Steve Lain is the Council’s Lighting Manager and he explained, “as part of a £10m investment during this financial year we are making improvements to these two Redways. In particular, we wanted to switch from the 50W SONs to a white light source to improve lighting levels and make significant reductions in our energy consumption. We also found that a number of the square lighting columns were starting to badly corrode after 40 years of good service.”

“With these aims in mind we reviewed the LED luminaire options for upgrading the lighting on the North to South route, which covers about 300 fittings. We had recently used Urbis Schréder’s Axia on a small footpath scheme and were really impressed with the results. The figures showed that on this main route it was also a very strong performer in terms of the quality of the light output. From our perspective, it also offers good value for money.”

Since Spring 2013, we have supplied 250 Axias to the Council, equipped with 24 LEDs. The Axias are mounted on new 5m columns and produce a neutral white light.

Steve said, “we opted for a narrow optic, which means that the lighting distribution achieved on the cycle tracks and pathways meets our needs perfectly. To date, we have installed 130 units on the North to South route and the initial feedback from people is very positive. In particular, the installers have commented on just how good the lighting levels are and people have also mentioned how good the Axia looks during the day.”

To reduce on-going maintenance costs, the Axias are mounted on ‘hockey stick’ shaped brackets to ensure that the fittings are not covered as the trees lining the routes start to grow back.

Steve commented, “when we converted the underpass lighting over to LEDs we reduced our running costs by £400k per annum. We are expecting to make even larger savings now we are switching the main Redway lighting over as well. For example, the Axias are delivering energy savings of close to 50% and we should also see reductions to our on-going maintenance costs through a combination of installing new columns and using LEDs.”

“By early 2014 all the Axias should be in and then we can move on to the next phase of our relighting programme. Going from the SONs to white LEDs has made a massive difference to the quality of the light and we want to continue this theme.”

FOR AUTHORITIES WITH LARGE STOCKS OF OLDER HID TECHNOLOGY WHO WANT TO EXPLORE THE USE OF LED’s FOR RESIDENTIAL STREET LIGHTING, THE AXIA OFFERS A COST EFFECTIVE, HIGH QUALITY OPTION. WE SPOKE WITH TWO LONDON BOROUGHS TO SEE HOW THEIR LED TRIALS WENT, WHICH COMPARED OUR AXIAS TO 70W SON LANTERNS.

Ron Thorogood is the Lighting Asset Manager for the London Borough of Newham. He said, “we have been considering using LEDs for residential street lighting for a while now. When the opportunity arose to carry out a trial, we decided to replace the existing 70W SON lanterns along Bridge Road with LED luminaires.”

“Having used Urbis Schréder in the past, we asked them for advice and they suggested their Axia LED luminaire. The design calculations using 48 LED Axias, mounted on the existing 6m columns, looked good so we went ahead on that basis.”

The 5 Axias we supplied were installed during August 2013, achieving an immediate impact.Ron commented, “the before and after photos clearly highlight how effective the Axias are at improving the lighting levels and we have had no complaints from residents. So, it’s a good result all round.”

In the London Borough of Redbridge, the Axia was also selected for a LED trial scheme. A Borough Lighting Representative explained, “we were looking to undertake a comparison between a 70W SON lantern and a LED luminaire, along a typical residential street.”

“We had already used LEDs for a footpath scheme, but this was the first test to see how they performed on a residential street. Eventually we settled on Langley Crescent, as it is a fairly long street and has a semi arc shape.”

We supplied the Borough with 11 Axias, equipped with 40 LEDs, mounted on the existing 6m columns. These are run at 350mA, consuming 45W.

The Representative said, “not only does the scheme look good during the day, it has also improved the lighting levels for residents and made the area feel more secure. In particular, the uniformity of the lighting is excellent and the photos show just how visibility has improved since the units went in during August.”

“As this trial has made such a positive difference, we have looked at our capital funding programme

IAoptions to see what LEDs can deliver compared to Cosmo lamps mounted at 6, 8 and 10m. With at least 1,000 lamps to replace over the next few years, we need to ensure we take all the different factors into account.”

“Based on the evidence from this trial scheme we have opted to use 24 LED luminaires run at 500mA consuming 40W and 32 LED units run at 500mA consuming 52W on all new 6m columns falling under our replacement programme.”

A road safety investment in the Blackheath area, included traffic calming measures, car parking upgrades and an overhaul of the existing lighting.

The Borough’s Public Lighting Manager is Tony Hutchinson and he explained, “the roads under consideration are in what we call a ‘conflict zone’, due to the close proximity of two busy roundabouts. The existing lighting was provided by 250W SONs, but it was obvious that some stretches of the road were over lit and other sections were under lit.”

“We looked at the best way to address the uneven lighting distribution and asked Urbis for their advice. They put forward the Teceo as a LED solution that could help us achieve the light output levels required and improve our control over where the light is directed.”

We supplied the Borough with 28 Teceo fittings, equipped with either 64, 114 or 144 LEDs. 24 of the fittings are mounted on the existing 8m or 10m columns, with four new column positions added to provide the optimum lighting levels.

Tony added, “one of the Teceo’s most attractive features is its use of modules, allowing you to vary the number of LEDs in each unit. This feature allowed us to carefully control the light and ensure we did not over or under light any sections of the road surface.”

“We used the 144 LED Teceos to light the roundabouts where we required higher lighting levels, with the other versions used to light the approach roads. The end result is an even lighting distribution and lower energy consumption.”

“Given the success of this scheme, we are definitely looking to increase our use of LED technology for road and residential street lighting where we can demonstrate the business case.”

MAXIMISE YOUR ENERGY SAVINGS ON LED LUMINAIRE REPLACEMENT PROGRAMMES FOR THOSE CONSIDERING SWITCHING THEIR STOCK OF HID LUMINAIRES OVER TO LEDS, THERE ARE OFTEN SIGNIFICANT ENERGY SAVINGS ON OFFER. IT IS ALSO WORTH CONSIDERING THE ADDITIONAL SAVINGS AVAILABLE IF THE LED LUMINAIRES ARE PROGRAMMED TO SWITCH ON AND OFF AT 10 LUX, RATHER THAN 35 LUX.

John Fox is the Managing Director of Lucy Zodion. He explained the key issues that Local Authorities should be aware of when looking to take advantage of this potential saving on LED replacement programmes.

So John, why is it that we can even discuss this topic?

“It is all to do with the arrival of LEDs as a viable technology for use in street lighting. If you consider that with traditional lamp types, such as SOX and SON, it takes around 5 minutes for them to warm up to full output.”

“However, a LED luminaire is operating at full output almost instantaneously so you no longer need to take a warm up period into consideration. This then raises the question of why not turn the light source on later when the light starts to fade.”

So, this is all to do with Lux levels?

“Correct. For many years, the industry used the 70 Lux level to trigger lamps switching on and then, more recently, 55 Lux then 35 Lux started to become the norm. Today, with the increasing use of LED luminaires, the industry should seriously be

Page 39: NEWS / PRODUCTS / DESIGN / INSTALLATIONS - … / PRODUCTS / DESIGN / INSTALLATIONS DECEMBER 2013 ... Sky’s wind turbine at their West London office ... of options for lighting the

39www.urbis-schreder.com

considering switching to a lower value, for example 10 Lux. You could also argue that the luminaires should be switched off at 10 Lux as the dawn starts to break.”

“Although this might sound like a big change, the key point is that the process is straightforward. For instance, the latest photocells are now a reliable technology which gives you the flexibility to select the precise Lux levels at which your LED luminaires turn on and off. So, all you need to do is tell your supplier that the luminaires need to be pre-programmed to the 10 Lux level.”

Why 10 Lux and not lower?

“This is probably the lowest level that ensures you are not compromising the lighting levels on the road. A LED luminaire switching on at 10 Lux still provides you with a similar level of light on the road surface as a HID luminaire which turns on at 35 Lux several minutes earlier and then slowly warms up to full power.”

“Also, on a night with a full moon the light levels are at around 1 Lux, so 10 Lux keeps you well clear of the situation where the lights don’t turn on at all. When you look at all the variables, 10 Lux is arguably a pragmatic figure when using LED luminaires.”

And what sort of energy savings are on offer?

“Potentially there are lots. However, at first glance, the savings might not look much as you are only saving a few minutes in terms of operating time in the morning and evening each day. For example, you are probably saving 50 – 100 hours of operating time a year per LED luminaire, depending on the Lux levels your existing units were turning on and off at. From this figure you can then work out your energy saving, which probably won’t blow your socks off.”

“However, if you then multiply this number by the quantity of LED luminaires you have running it quickly mounts up to a more significant figure. And don’t forget this is a long-term saving you can make at no additional capital outlay when you make your investment in the LED luminaires.”

Could changing the switch on time impact end user safety?

“In theory it could. For example, you could argue that the street lights turning on and warming up at an earlier time acts as a helpful guide for road users to turn their vehicle lights on and that it also provides them with a route map for the course of the road. With the LEDs turning on slightly later when 10 Lux is reached, there is that small window of time to consider.”

“You also need to have in mind that, as LEDs reach full power in an instant, any sudden change in light levels might cause a distraction to road users. On a clear summer evening the LEDs turning on is unlikely to be noticed, but on a murky winter’s evening the impact could be more noticeable.”

“Having said this, we are talking minutes in the changes to switch on and off times which on the vast majority of days are unlikely to go noticed by road users. In reality, these scenarios are the worst case but it is important to carefully consider all the variables before making a decision.”

Thanks John.
