TEXAS PLAINS HERITAGE TRAILS PROGRAM The Texas Heritage Trails Program has been working hard to educate our legislators on the demonstrable economic benefits of our program, based on the timely release of the Economic Impact of Historic Preservation in Texas study in February 2015 — more than $7 billion of the state’s $67.5 billion travel & tourism industry is attributable to heritage tourism. And the Heritage Trails are Texas’s most vigorous marketing program in this arena. We’re a program that makes money for Texas, rather than costing the state money. The Heritage Trails serve every one of Texas’s 254 counties, large and small. For many rural and smaller counties and communities (especially in the Plains and Panhandle), the Trails program is the most significant tourism marketing they have. Furthermore, our broad community base of support also engages volunteers and local contributions. Here are the latest aggregate figures for the 10 regions: (see http://www.thc.state.tx.us/about/fast-facts#cat_306_)
$1,915,856.16: Regional cash contributions supporting the Texas Heritage Trails Program
$3,176,730.82: In-kind contributions supporting the Texas Heritage Trails Program 71,633.5: Hours contributed by volunteers through the Texas Heritage Trails Program More facts and figures from the Texas Travel Industry Association and the economic impact study are digested here, along with infographics: http://www.texasheritagetrailsprojects.com/facts---figures.html We expect that this information will be most fully considered in the budget conference committee, whose members were named a little over a week ago. We’re confident that our legislators and governor’s office understand the value of the Trails program, and will see fit to replace our lost federal funding with $2 million per year in general revenue to continue generating $7 billion annually.
