The secret for creating “magic” in our careers, our organizations, and our lives is simple: outstanding leadership—the kind that inspires employees, delights customers, and achieves extraordinary business results.

No one knows more about this kind of leadership than Lee Cockerell, the man who ran Walt Disney World® Resort operations for over a decade. And in Creating Magic, he shares the leadership principles that not only guided his own journey from a poor farm boy in Oklahoma to the head of operations for a multibillion dol-lar enterprise, but that also soon came

to form the cultural bedrock of the world’s number one vacation destina-tion. But as Lee demonstrates, great leadership isn’t about mastering im-possibly complex management theo-ries. We can all become outstanding leaders by following the ten practical, common sense strategies outlined in this remarkable book. As straight-forward as they are profound, these leadership lessons include: Everyone is important; Make your people your brand; Burn the free fuel: appreciation, recognition, and encouragement; and give people a purpose, not just a job.

Jared Ward’s passionate personality was nurtured early in life while growing up as a proud Southerner. While he describes his childhood

self as “hell on wheels,” that zest for life — something that caused his teachers so much grief at one time — may be the defining quality that makes him so successful today. He now channels that passion and spark into his role as Divisional Sales Executive at New American Mortgage, where he uses his gift for forming new relationships to recruit loan officers.

Ward’s life motto — “all in or all out“ — not only means that he is dedicated to his job, but equally so to his wife and sons. Sundays are a sacred time in the Ward home. The day is declared a Sabbath, and he avoids distractions by turning off his cellphone in order to fully engage as a husband and father. His “self-care plan” involves golfing, but he doesn’t just hit balls for fun. His competitive spirit keeps him active in his club’s golf tournaments. Both Ward’s ambition and enthusiastic outlook on life make him an asset to New American Mortgage.

What inspires you about NAM?The leadership — I love that Casey and Toby have a vision to serve others. So if you asked me why I came here, it was that NAM of-fered me the opportunity to be myself more than any other company that I have ever worked with in the past. And I love the vi-sion that they had to be the largest privately held mortgage bank in the country.

How would you define “being your-self”?In past companies I have not been able to re-ally share the spiritual side of myself. I haven’t been able to share my faith openly and I like that with the leadership that we have — with Deran, Casey and Toby — they hold you accountable for how you are not just from a PNL standpoint but also from a spiritual standpoint and how you treat and relate to others.

Where did you grow up?

Athens in Gainesville, Georgia.

Has the South been where you’ve lived your entire life?Pretty much my entire life. Absolutely. I love the South. I love the weather, I love the tradi-tion, I love the pageantry, I love the passion that people in the South have compared to anywhere else in the country.

Are you a sports fan? A huge sports fan. Absolutely. Go Dawgs. And you print that in the article with three exclamation points afterwards.

Tell me about your family. Who are when you go home?At home I get to unwind and just be a jokester. Absolutely. I am the husband that gives my wife a very hard time [laughs] and the dad that reads 1,000 books and plays with a lot of Legos. I have two little boys, soon to be seven and soon to be four, and my wife is a stay-at-home mother.

Would you say that you have a passion for life? I do. It’s everything I do. I do it passionately or I don’t do it at all. My favorite motto is “all in or all out.”

If your current career path had not panned out what might have you pur-sued instead?I would be a professional golfer. Not like PGA professional but professional club pro. I’m playing in my club championship this week — four day event.

What is your handicap? It’s actually gone up a little bit just in time for the tournament [laughs]. It went from a 6.1 to a 7.8.

What is your favorite type of cuisine?French probably—Duck—Moullard style. It’s really good.

Do you get to go out to nice French restaurants with your wife often? We do date night once a week. Gotta have good date night, keep the passion there, and then stay in communication. Because in my role I’m travelling a lot, so you’ve got to be diligent about making time to spend with your wife and kids. So we do date night once a week and on Sunday no phone gets turned on at all. We keep the Sabbath. It is truly a family day. No work — the kids don’t even have to clean their rooms. It’s really just

about spending time with one another.

What music are you playing on repeat right now?Mumford & Sons (their new “Babel”), All Sons and Daughters, and Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeros.

Who is Edward Sharp and the Mag-netic Zeros? Hippie music. Absolutely hippie music. I was a big granola guy when I was in high school and college. I’ve seen in my lifetime over 20 Grateful Dead shows and over 50 Phish shows.

If you were a super hero what powers would you have?I would only need one. The power to read minds. If you’re sitting in a presentation to an office, you can read the mind of someone — when you see that you see you’re going down the wrong rabbit hole you can quickly reverse course and you can actually tell them what they need to hear.

What is the most fulfilling part of your job?Relationship development and talent devel-opment of the people that we’re bringing on.

Stay tuned for Toby and Casey’s quarterly selection for our employee spotlight.

New American Spotlight is an initiative to highlight our best of the best. At our company we have “Raving Fans” and “NAM Heroes,” but we want to showcase those that go above and beyond. This individual will be hand selected by Toby and Casey each quarter. This employee will be someone who exemplifies our standard of excellence.

4th Quarter

Several months ago, we were experiencing great frustrations with several mortgage companies doing business in

Charlottesville, VA. Like many of you, I have found success with individual loan officers. They are the key to a successful process for our clients. If an LO is attentive to my client’s needs, is organized, cares, and knows how to work hard, their deals get done and our purchasers are happy and well taken care of. It seems

that these LO’s have processors and underwriters working with them versus against the process. Their loan packages are tight and they do not make extra work for the processors or underwriters.

Piedmont Realty & Construction just endured one of the most painful experiences of my career with one of our purchasers (I will not share which mortgage company.) The home was ready the last week in August but we heard every excuse as to why the loan was not ready. The drama continued until the third

week in September (not wanting to start over because of additional delays) — until we saw no end in sight and had to “pull the plug.” Mike Buczynski from New American Mortgage stepped in, met with the clients and ran head on with the loan application, new appraisal, and processing. He successfully closed the loan in just over one week — yes, 9 days in total. The bonus: our clients got a better rate! This does not happen in this market and this story needs to be shared.

DREW HOLZWARTH PRINCIPAL AT PIEDMONT REALTY & CONSTRUCTION, CROZET, VA

A business acquaintance recommended that I refinance my home through a VA loan based on my particular

situation. I looked into it and decided it was time, so I started my search for mortgage lenders. I talked to Bank of America (existing mortgage lender), USAA, Wells Fargo, and NFCU. NFCU had the best rate and being a long time NFCU member I figured that I would probably end up going with them so I put in the initial request online to get the GFE. Then I “Googled” local mortgage vendors for Virginia Beach, VA and New American was one of six that came up in a list. I then called all six and only New American had: (1) a person answer the phone and (2) that person make sure I was connected to a live loan officer rather

than a voicemail. Grace was the person I spoke with. So then it was down to two, New American and NFCU. I still figured I would end up with NFCU because I knew nothing about New American but that I would give Grace a shot. Finally, because of her persistence, patience, and willingness to get things done, New American got my business and closing before the NFCU person assigned to my application contacted me in person. Was everything perfect and went without a hitch? No. Did Grace take care of all the issues to get the loan closed in record time? Yes. First phone contact was September 5 and closing occurred on September 27. May not be a record in your book but was an incredible feat in my view when other lenders said it would take 45-90 days. And in case you were wondering, yes, New American did beat NFCU’s rate. Although if it were not for

Grace being so proactive, available, and immediately answering any questions throughout the process, I easily would have opted for NFCU if it appeared that New American was going to be difficult to work with. And just so you know, although I may not be the most difficult person Grace has had to work with, I am probably in the top tier. I know I am very demanding and ask many questions, but Grace maintained her composure through it all and if she could not answer a question to my satisfaction she wasn’t too proud to get someone who could. In my company we have a “Star Award” program that recognizes excellence and includes a small monetary bonus for exceptional work such as what Grace did. If you have a similar program, from my view, I believe she deserves that recognition.

WNew American’s flexible, ever-evolving atmos-

phere is what Phil Robinson loves about coming to work every morning. He knows

that he would be bored if he were preforming the same task every day, cooped up in his own office without the open-air cubicles. Robinson’s itch for change makes it appropriate that he was recently re-assigned to the new position of Closing Coordinator.

When not at work, Robinson loves spending time with his large, close-knit family. He describes their gatherings as exciting, loud, and full of singing. Mu-

sic has naturally become a large part of his life and he is passionate about singing on his church’s worship team every Sunday.

Robinson is energized most when people surround him. He admits he is actually shy, but you would not know it based on the many friendships in his life. When asked how he would hypothetically use the power of invisibility in a practical situation, he said he would stop a robbery by secretly apprehending the culprit. His answer reveals the depth to which he cares about others.

What is your role at NAM?My role at New American is now the Clos-ing Coordinator.

You said “now,” did this recently change? As of yesterday. It’s been exciting. That’s one of the things that I like about here. You’re al-ways changing, nothing is ever monotonous, you’re always doing something new and dif-ferent if you want to.

How long have you been with NAM? A year and four months.

What inspires you about NAM?The happy, positive, upbeat staff — the em-ployees are just awesome. That inspires me because I actually enjoy coming here. Also, the overall flexibility and just the out-of-the-box thinking of the company, being that much different than everyone else and show-ing the results by growing at a crazy fast pace.

Tell me about your family. I have a sister that is 43 and when she was off at college I was two so I really didn’t grow up

with a sibling I just kind of consider myself as an only child. I have a crazy, exciting fam-ily. They always love to sing. There is always some kind of singing or music playing going on in my family’s house. We just have a lot of fun — great time.

Music is central to your family gather-ings — is it important to you?Absolutely. I love it. I’m always singing or doing something musical. I’m a worship leader at church. I kind of play the piano. I’m not good at it at all but I can pick up cords by ear and play a song by ear if you give me long enough.

Where did you grow up?I grew up here in Hampton Roads and moved to St. Augustine, Florida when I was 17 and then I moved back here at the age of 19. I just up and left. I thought it would be fun. Then I moved to Atlanta, George for a year or two and came back.

If your current career path had not panned out what might have you pursued instead?I would probably be in the hotel management industry. I was the front desk manager at a hotel for a year and a half and I loved it. You get to see the people that come in regularly and people that aren’t from the area. You get to brag about this area, tell them about the beach and a lot of local places that are good to eat at and things like that, so it was really fun. I don’t know if there was really anywhere to go in the hotel industry though ...

Is being around people important to you?I love people. I’m always wanting to be in-volved in some kind of interaction with people. And that’s why I like the openness here because you can see and yell across the cubicles to people [laughs]. If you’re in your own office all day by yourself it would be very boring.

Do you feel that being a worship leader is a way that you connect with people well?It is. It’s actually raised my confidence as far as talking to new people because there are a lot of people that go to my church and I don’t know all of them: “Were you singing on

stage?” So that is an icebreaker as far as talk-ing to people because I’m really, believe it or not, a shy person so it helps.

If you were a super hero what powers would you have?I love this one because everyone thinks my answer is lame. But I would definitely pick invisibility. If I was invisible I could maybe go and discreetly fix something or change some-thing that’s about to happen without giving it away. Let’s say someone was being robbed right now. I would just walk up to somebody and punch them and they wouldn’t have any idea. Or maybe I could scare people [laughs].

How would you say that you have influenced the people that you work with?I would say that I am a positive influence because I try to look at the good in all situ-ations. You know, it can be very stressful at a mortgage company but I normally try to remind people as horrible as your day is just be thankful that you have a job because there are so many people that don’t. Welcome the stress and embrace it and be thankful that you have it because you could be at home doing nothing. So I think I’ve been an encourager.

What isMovement Foundation?

In 2011 Movement Foundation was created by the two owner’s of New American Mortgage, Casey Crawford and Toby Harris. New American Mortgage is a privately held company with a strong vi-sion and clear values: God, family, commu-nity, and business. One advantage of being a privately held company is that it is not always about the bottom line, or value to

share holders, or profit, profit, profit. Yes, we take all of those things very seriously, but it is also about doing the right thing by giving back and serving the communities in which we work. Movement Foundation was es-tablished to act as a giving conduit for NAM, because we believe firmly in what the Bible tells us in Luke 12:48 that, “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” New American Mortgage recent-ly achieved the honor of being known as the fastest growing mortgage bank in the United States. We are humbled and hon-ored by this achievement, such that we are inspired to do more, to give more, and to

love more — to love our neighbors. Matthew 25:35 talks about a group of people who are considered “bless-ed.” In today’s society, “blessed” can take on many different meanings, but mostly we understand and interpret the defini-tion to be those who dress in fancy clothes or those who drive nice cars or live in large homes. What Matthew 25:35 tells us is

that those who are blessed are the ones who gave Jesus something to eat when he was hungry, something to drink when he was thirsty, and clothes when he needed them most. In this context, the group of individuals had their eyes open to the needs around them, the needs of their neighbors. New American Mort-gage’s reach stretches from

the East Coast to the West and from the North to the South. Through Movement Foundation, we want to know and meet the needs of communities that we work and to love our “neighbors” with our time and resources. For, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” Together as a company we can change our commu-nity through the practical gift of lov-ing our neighbors! Thank you for joining us on this journey and for doing your part!
