Dear readers of HKIA News,
This is my first message since I assumed my new role as CEO of the Airport Authority on 1 October. I am truly honoured to have the opportunity to manage Hong Kong International Airport, one of the world’s best and busiest airports. Since coming on board, it’s been a delight to meet so many of my colleagues from different departments, and I’ve enjoyed the chance to be walked through all the various aspects of airport operations.
Operating a 24-hour facility that serves over 160,000 passengers each day is no easy task. It hinges on the
seamless coordination of every organisation and staff member working on the airport island – from giving directions to aircraft in the sky, to swift manoeuvring on the apron, to every nut and bolt in every piece of equipment. We are lucky to have a troop of dedicated professionals, working day in and day out to ensure that everything runs perfectly. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the 65,000-strong airport community for building such an enviable reputation for HKIA.
I have been reading a newly published book that traces the history and development of our airport from the Kai Tak era to the present day. Seeing these stunning photos and reading all the illuminating oral histories reminded me that it took the airport more than half a century to be transformed from a simple airstrip into the present-day, modern facility that serves almost 60 million passengers a year. Our status as an international aviation hub has not come easily. It was built on the hard work of generations of Hong Kongers. It falls on our shoulders to maintain this valuable asset well for Hong Kong, and to continue its success for generations to come.
To do this, we must maintain our top-notch service standards and unsurpassed passenger experience, even as we face formidable capacity constraints. We must also proceed full steam ahead with the development projects we have in the pipeline, including the North Commercial District and three-runway system, to safeguard our airport’s competitiveness and Hong Kong’s status as a world city. Along the way, we must also develop the next generation of future airport operators and aviation professionals.
HKIA belongs to the people of Hong Kong, and it is inextricably linked to the future of the city. I am confident that, as all our new projects are realised one by one in the coming years, we will help Hong Kong reach new heights of prosperity.
Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) promoted energy conservation by co-organising a “Saving Energy, Going Green” interactive exhibition with CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power). The green showcase was on full display at the Meeters and Greeters Hall of Terminal 1 from 15 to 24 October.
At the heart of the exhibition was a 2.4 metre tall tree-like structure featuring recycled glass bottles with environmentally friendly LED light bulbs placed inside. The LED lights were connected to two stationary bicycles, which viewers could pedal on to harness the power of electricity and illuminate the display. In addition, visitors could snap photos of themselves pedalling on a separate bike and then share the images to friends and families through various social media.
Sharing the spotlight at the exhibition were two Step Power Generators developed by CLP Power that enabled attendees to experience the process of electricity generation by stepping on the spot. Travellers also got a kick out of playing a multimedia soccer game, “Energy Saving Football Striker”, that suggested energy-saving tips which players could put into practice in their daily lives. The exhibition also showcased the numerous environmental initiatives adopted by HKIA.
Speaking at the launch ceremony on 15 October, Airport Authority (AA) CEO Fred Lam reiterated HKIA’s commitment to environmental protection. “HKIA handled close to 60 million passengers last year and is one of the busiest airports of the world. We have implemented various initiatives in the airport for environmental conservation and energy-saving,” Lam noted. “By participating in our interactive exhibition, visitors will earn a deeper understanding of sustainability and conservation efforts.”
CLP Power Managing Director Paul Poon also stressed on the importance of public education to the success of promoting energy efficiency. “In addition to introducing a series of tools and customised solutions to assist our customers on energy saving, we have also initiated various public education and promotion programmes, aiming to raise awareness about environmental protection.”

Lam first made a trip to the Integrated Airport Centre, the heart of Hong Kong International Airport’s (HKIA) operations, to look into the real time operations and the contingency plans in place at HKIA. He then proceeded to observe the Baggage Handling System, especially the application of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. Capping off his comprehensive tour, Lam explored the facilities at the SkyPier, followed by a visit to Terminals 1 and 2.
Later in the week, Lam took in a different view of HKIA during an overnight visit, observing the airport’s nighttime operations and maintenance work at the Automated People Mover depot and Baggage Handling System. He then rounded up his visit with an up-close look at the different runway maintenance works, including rubber removal, grass cutting, marking, repainting, and repairing of airfield ground lights.
The AA recently welcomed its new Executive Director, Human Resources & Administration Florence Chung, who joined the airport community on 6 October. Chung will oversee key areas at the AA, including corporate culture development, human resources planning, talent management and succession planning, compensation and benefits policies, in addition to handling stakeholder management for human resources-related matters.
With more than 25 years’ experience in general and human resources management, Chung held senior positions at sizeable commercial and public utility companies such as HKR International Limited, Hutchison Port Holdings and CLP Group.
Commenting on her appointment, Chung said, “I am excited to join the AA at a pivotal time when HKIA is writing a new chapter in its illustrious history. Human resources will play a central role in the future development of the airport and I look forward to contributing to the airport’s soaring growth.”

The AA has been honoured with a Safety Performance Award at the 13th Hong Kong Occupational Safety and Health Award hosted by Occupational Safety and Health Council. The award adds to the AA’s current winning streak in the category, having earned the distinction every year since 2004. This year, the AA also added the Silver Award for Safety Culture to its list.
The AA is committed to fostering a culture of safety at HKIA. Last year, it launched the airport-wide Safety 2013 Campaign. A series of informative workshops, training programmes, competitions and an Airport Safety Ambassador Programme were held throughout the year. As a result, HKIA recorded an Airport Composite Safety Index of 5.32 in 2013/14, a drop from 5.72 in 2012/13 and was 2.2% better than its stretch target. Following last year’s success, the AA has again implemented the Safety 2014 Campaign.
HKIA was once again recognised at the TTG Travel Awards 2014 Ceremony and Gala Dinner on 2 October. The Awards also celebrated its silver jubilee this year. As one of the highlights at the ceremony, the 10 TTG Travel Hall of Fame awardees were presented with trophies on stage.
HKIA was inducted into TTG Travel’s Hall of Fame in 2013 after winning the Best Airport award for 10 consecutive years. Ten companies and organisations have so far been conferred to the hall throughout the Awards’ 25-year history.
HKIA recently claimed top honour under the Cleanest Data Category at the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Fieldwork Awards 2014 organised by the Airports Council International. The airport is a participant of the ASQ Survey, a unique passenger satisfaction benchmark programme covering over 200 airports worldwide. Passengers are interviewed at the departures gates when the airport experience is still fresh on their minds. In addition, a strict fieldwork methodology has been specifically designed to ensure accurate and comparable results.
HKIA was lauded for strictly adhering to the fieldwork methodology and data processing guidelines in conducting the survey. The amount of usable information was controlled at an optimum level. During the 2014 ASQ Forum Asia/Middle East/Africa, awards were presented to the respective winners from the three regions.

In memory of Dr Marvin Cheung 悼念張建東博士(1947 – 2014)
The Airport Authority (AA) expresses its deepest sorrow over the passing of its former Chairman Dr Marvin Cheung on 13 September. Aged 67, Dr Cheung held multiple key positions in the public services sector. His tenure at the AA spanned over 10 years, serving as a member of the Board from 2003 to 2008 prior to assuming the role of Chairman between June 2008 and May 2014.
A highly esteemed leader, Dr Cheung dedicated himself to guiding Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) towards unprecedented heights and further strengthening Hong Kong’s status as an international and regional aviation centre. He oversaw a number of expansion projects at HKIA and was instrumental in setting the airport on a path towards a three-runway system.
On 26 September, AA Chairman Vincent Lo led AA senior management and staff in paying their last respects to Dr Cheung at the Hong Kong Funeral Home. Some AA colleagues also attended the memorial service held on the following day.
Colleagues of the AA will always remember Dr Cheung’s invaluable contributions to HKIA, and will continue to carry on his legacy in shaping Hong Kong as a world-class aviation hub.

As the Director (Operations) of Hongkong Post, Leo Yan has witnessed the fascinating evolution of airmail spanning from the Kai Tak era to the present HKIA, with the items transported by airmail being reflective of the changes in society and lifestyle over the years.
He recalls that during the 1980s, letters, postcards and greeting cards were main items sent through airmail, as the Internet and long-distance phone calls were costly at the time. Films were also popular items for tourists to send back to their home country prior to leaving Hong Kong. During the city’s booming textile days, some tourists would order a tailor-made suit in Hong Kong, which the seller would later send to the buyer through airmail.
While the quantity of traditional airmail items has reduced in recent years as the Internet has soared in popularity, there has been an increase in large-sized airmail items. This is caused by the rapid development of air freight consolidators who send the items via Hong Kong to capitalise on lower costs. Meanwhile, HKIA’s extensive network has also led to growing transshipment demand from Mainland China.
Yan adds that the airmail centre in Kai Tak was located opposite to the passenger terminal building, which was separated by the apron. Back in those days, staff would ride on bicycles to get to the other side. However, this is no longer possible due to the increased danger resulting from the larger apron area today.
The two-volume history book is now available at major bookstores, get a copy to enjoy more interesting stories of HKIA.
With its emphasis on fostering a welcoming environment, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport launched a customer service competition between different airport service units. Participants were judged on the friendliness of staff, their service standards and customer service initiatives.
As part of the campaign, an award presentation ceremony was held at Terminal 2 on 15 August. Twenty-five airport staff and 15 airport service units were recognised for their exceptional customer service. With healthy traffic growth, Hongqiao Airport will continue to strengthen its customer service efforts to deliver a holistic airport experience.

settinG oFF with siAM AiRSiam Air became the youngest member of the HKIA family when it launched the daily passenger service between Bangkok’s Don Muang International Airport and Hong Kong commencing on 6 October. Famed for its delectable cuisine, rich cultural heritage, and its numerous shopping malls and markets, Bangkok continues to make a name for itself as a popular destination for travellers worldwide. The new service further enhances travellers’ convenience in flying off from HKIA to the renowned food and shopping paradise.
Passengers travelling through Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport were recently taken on a cultural journey prior to boarding their flight. As one of the venues hosting the 2014 Shanghai Book Exhibition, over 500 travel books, children’s books and interactive pop-up books were on full display at Terminal 2 from 13 to 19 August to enrich passengers’ airport experience.
Alongside the book display, the airport also held “The Star Fairy Tale” exhibition that showcased 50 artworks produced by children diagnosed with autism. Jointly organised with charity organisations Shanghai Qingcongquan Training Centre for Children with Special Needs and Beyond Autism School, the drawing exhibition helped create an artistic environment at the airport while increasing the public’s awareness of autism.

busY beinG GReen上班添綠意HKIA continued flying towards a greener future by participating in the Biz-Green Monday campaign as an Anchor Corporation alongside other leading Hong Kong companies.
The initiative is one of the highlights of the Hong Kong Green Building Week (HKGBW) 2014 co-organised by the Construction Industry Council and the Hong Kong Green Building Council Limited. HKGBW is an annual campaign aimed at promoting green building development, raising public awareness on a green lifestyle, and driving changes in the public’s mindset and behaviours through a series of programmes. This year, HKGBW joined hands with Green Monday, an organisation that actively promotes sustainable living.
As part of Biz-Green Monday, the AA encouraged staff to “Dress Green, Eat Green and Travel Green” on 15 September and contribute to environmental protection by making individual behavioural changes. The initiative suggested staff to dress in light yet professional attire to stay cool, hence minimise the need for air-conditioning. They were also encouraged to eat more vegetables and less meat, and to travel to work by public transportation to help reduce carbon emissions associated with meat production and private vehicles use.
In addition, an AA representative exchanged ideas on a wide spectrum of environmental topics with counterparts from fellow Anchor Corporations during a breakfast gathering on that day.

As part of its ongoing efforts to cultivate a healthy lifestyle in the airport community, the Hong Kong International Airport Recreation and Community Engagement (HKIARaCE) organised a series of Shaolin Ba Duan Jin classes in September. Participants performed a variety of simple stretching exercises aimed at stimulating the meridian systems throughout the body. The traditional practice is considered to be beneficial in restoring one’s health, and preventing illness and imbalance in the body.
HKIARaCE also held a Chinese medical seminar in the same month to help attendees address cervical spine pain, which is common in the workplace. During the session, a Chinese medical practitioner was on hand to explain the cause and effects of cervical spine pain, and later demonstrated beneficial exercises to help alleviate the discomfort associated with the condition.
A team of AA staff broke out a sweat during the 6th Victoria to Peak (VTP) Challenge on 1 October, which was organised by non-profit organisation Club Balance. Stretching from Victoria Harbour to the Peak, the race started from Justice Drive this year and climbed eight kilometres up to the finishing point at Peak Galleria.
Ascending to a commanding elevation of almost 400 metres, the race took runners on a challenging route weaving through iconic sites, such as Hong Kong Park and Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens while testing their endurance. Runners were also able to take in a stunning bird’s eye view of Victoria Harbour near the end of the route. The event culminated with a post-race breakfast, allowing runners to wind down with a hearty meal and mingle with fellow participants.
