The Commonwealth Games may be over but they will leave a lasting memory for Logan Hospital Systems Integration Officer Haeley Reeves.
A flash quote reporter on the finish line at Cararra Stadium, Haeley said she was tasked with chatting with athletes when they finished their event to get their comments online.
“I was an ABC community correspondent so I will be back out using some of those skills.
“I’m looking forward to the celebrity spotting as well as finding the underdog who has achieved a personal best.
“It’s always exciting to see someone who beats their personal best or achieves something or a for a sport they have been training years for.”
outcomes for Logan womenWhen it comes to all things babies there isn’t much Michelle O’Connor doesn’t know.
The new Midwifery Unit Manger (MUM) at the Logan Maternity and Child Hubs said she had worked for many years as a midwife in a community setting, following women and families through their pregnancies, births and postnatal care.
Michelle said being part of such a wonderful time in a family’s life was a rewarding experience helped by a model of care that had many benefits for women and their families.
“Our vision for the Hubs is that they will provide a unique location and model of care for women who are not accessing our services for a range of reasons,” Michelle said.
“Once we identify these women, we can offer them care as part of a team that is local, culturally relevant, and provides a diverse range of services in one community space.”
Michelle said the team of midwives brought with them a wealth of experience and passion for continuity of care to women and families.
“We join with health professionals at the Hubs to provide an integrated approach to care provision and we are invested in closing gaps that may exist and identifying opportunities for connection and support, providing safe, inclusive and women-centred care,” she said.
“Continuity of midwifery care has many known benefits. Most importantly, women are very satisfied with this kind of care compared with standard care.
“There are also fewer pre-term births, there may be a reduced need for interventions and often we see higher breastfeeding rates.”
Michelle said there was often a high level of trust developed between a woman and her midwife in a continuous relationship and that it was this trust developed in the Hubs, that she hoped would lead to more women in the community accessing care more often.
She said the Logan Maternity and Child Hubs had been developed with a shared vision to improve health outcomes for Logan women and their families in
partnership with Metro South Health and the Queensland Government.
“We are excited about this opportunity to engage with women and care for women and families across our diverse community.”
“The Hubs had been developed
with a shared vision to improve health outcomes”

Commonweath Games spectacularLogan Hospital patients undergoing rehabilitation caught Games fever last week holding their very own Commonwealth Games event.
Physiotherapist Rachael Bell said the ‘Rehab Games’ gave patients an opportunity to be a part of the festive spirit whilst completing their rehabilitation.
“All the patients and families from rehabilitation and palliative care were invited to participate with approximately 20 patients attending the games as well
as staff from across medical, nursing, clinical services and allied health,” Rachael said.
She said the games were tailored to the specific capabilities of each patient and that all patients participated in at least one game.
“Many patients also helped with preparation activities including making and hanging decorations.
“The games program included opening and closing ceremony songs, welcome to country, Mexican waves,
sideline cheering, basketball free throws, shot put, sit to stand competition, balloon tennis, Wii Fit boxing, word generating game and a mobility relay which included wheelchair users, mobility aid users and walking.”
Rachael said the games benefitted all the patients who were able to to use speech and language practise, mobility and balance training, upper limb retraining, interacting in social environments, cognitive skill practise and an overall feeling of fun, friendly competition, community spirit and inclusiveness.

I have been a patient here and I was quite scared at the time but I was seen quickly which was reassuring. It was busy and everyone was working really hard. The compassionate team cared for me so well and addressed all my concerns which gave me a lot of confidence in how my own family would be treated.
