Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of god in Christ Jesus for you. (I Thessalonians 5: 16-18) My house shall be a house of prayer. (Matthew 21:13)

Can you believe that another school year is about to begin?!? In just a couple of weeks both Richmond and Columbia county schools will be back in session. Many of our members at Advent who are teachers have already begun the process of setting up classrooms. For many of our members who are students, they are enjoying the last week(s) of summer break. For parents, you can almost hear the joy in their voices as their children prepare to go back to school. As the children, youth, teachers, and par-ents/grandparents/godparents prepare for yet another school year, now is a perfect time to wrap each other in prayer.

St. Paul reminds us in his letter to the Thessalonians to pray without ceasing and to give God thanks in ALL circumstances. What better time to be reminded of our call to pray in all circumstances. Many of us have enjoyed the summer break or time of Sab-bath. As we enter into August, we are reminded that fall is right around the corner and along with fall many of the old and even new ministries at Advent will be begin-ning.

As people of God at Advent, let us enter into this new time, this new season with prayerful hearts. Let us lift one another up in the faith. Let us give thanks to God for all we have been so graciously given, and let us remember in prayer those who are struggling in their faith and in life.

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” We are very thankful to be pastors in this place. We believe that God is at work in the life and ministry at Advent. As all the ac-tivities of the church begin to rev up once again, may we be centered in our prayer life both personally and as a church. We believe that God hears all prayers.

Even more so, Jesus is very clear that He wants to hear our prayers. In fact, Jesus commands it! This is especially true for our time of worship, for Jesus says, “My house shall be a house of prayer.” Notice Jesus does not say my house shall be a house of prayer from the pastors and assisting ministers. He says, “My house shall be a house of prayer,” period. Jesus wants to hear all our voices as we lift up petitions of thanksgiving and concern for our loved ones in pain. There is a specific place in the prayers of the people where we pause to give everyone a time to lift their voice. The prayer usually goes like this: “Let us pray now for those we name aloud or in the si-lence of our hearts.” Let us all be bold in offering God our prayer during this time. How glorious is this cacophony of sound and prayer!

We indeed praise God, offer our prayers, and give God thanks for the blessings He be-stows upon us all in abundance, especially His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; to Him be all praise and glory. In Christ’s love—Pastor Andrea and Pastor Jason

Service Ministry God’s Work. Our Hands.

September 6th and 7th will be here before we know it and the ELCA-wide community will join together in performing volunteer activities across the country. How awesome it would be to have a huge participa-tion of our church! Closer to the volunteer days there will be a meeting to discuss each project in more detail.

Advent has chosen several projects, both for outdoors and indoors.

September 6th your choices are in downtown Augusta:

To mow, rake, trim and tidy up the yards at 2 locations—the GAP building on Greene Street and the Family Promise transition house on Walker Street

Pick up litter at Pendleton King Park on Troup Street Pass out plates of food in support of the “under the bridge” ministry in downtown Augusta Clean the rooms, van and bus at the Family Promise headquarters on Central Avenue

September 7th your choices are in Advent’s Fellowship Hall:

Bag up rice and hotel toiletries Double bag plastic grocery bags Prepare and deliver lunches for residents of Maxwell House Prepare a buffet for the volunteers when they return from their volunteer activities

The target time for each of these activities in about 2 hours. In preparation, we need to order the t-shirts—$6 for children and adults (sm, med, lg, xlg) with an additional few dollars for larger sizes. The shirts are 100% pre-shrunk cotton. The pastors plan to have a photo taken of everyone in their bright yellow shirts for posting on our website.

Monetary donations are certainly accepted to support the purchase of items for the activities—just be sure to designate it specifically for this project. Please bring your plastic grocery bags to church, as well as the regular items we collect for the GAP ministry, eyeglasses and hotel size toiletries. We also collect pop tops for Ronald McDonald House and Box Tops for Education. All items can be dropped off on the Service Ministry table outside the adult Sunday School classroom.

Any questions, please call the pastors, Linda Law-rence or any member of the Service Ministry,

August is here! For many

families that means school is

just around the corner!

Shopping for school supplies,

books, and fall clothes becomes a

part of everyone's schedule.

Here at Advent, on Sunday, August 3rd, we want to celebrate and

bless the beginning of another school year. Students, preschool

through adult, bring your backpacks or lunch boxes to worship at 9:15

a.m. The service will lift up children and students of all ages, dedicat-

ing them to God's glory as we begin a new school year. These back-

packs and lunchboxes are our children’s constant companions as they go

about their school days. Therefore, it is very important to have them

blessed, along with reminding our children of God’s presence in our

lives.

This blessing is not limited to backpacks or lunch boxes. Bring any-

thing your child uses that is important to him or her so these too can

be blessed.

Teachers, aides, principals, administrators, secretaries, cooks,

librarians, janitors, and bus drivers…come to church to be blessed,

affirmed in your vocation, and encouraged as you serve children and

families in your daily work!

Love is Up for Renewal!

One of the ways God has worked His love in us and through us at Advent is by calling us to pray for one another. You are invited to join this year’s Prayer ADVENTure and grow in your ability to love. On this adventure, you will pray for about ten assigned members and visitors by name each week for one year. The Holy Spirit will lead you in knowing what to pray (so will checking in with the individuals from time to time).

A New Missionary

Members of our congregation for many years have given financial and prayer support to Ted

and Jane Zimmerman, ELCA missionaries in Hong Kong. They retired in June and are return-

ing to the U.S. As of July 1, we will be giving our support to Rev. Michael Parker. Rev. Parker

serves as the Director of Graduate Studies at the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo,

Egypt. His work includes curriculum development, arranging classes, coordinating professors,

and overseeing the work of the graduate students. He also teaches Church History for those

seeking their Bachelor of Divinity degree. If you would like to help Rev. Parker financially,

please add your name to the “Support Our Missionary” form in the Narthex.
