Adventus Incorporated, an innovative software publisher based in Halifax, is interested in partnering with an educational institution in Atlantic Canada on a research project to measure the impact of a music program on students learning math and literacy. In order to facilitate the end result in a classroom setting, Adventus has proposed a practical research project to the Department of Education. They have endorsed the program, but it remains partially funded. The research project would deliver the Adventus music program, and measure the impact on the students enrolled, for 4 years in duration, in 8 schools, with 1600 students participating. We expect to show a significant impact can be achieved across the entire student body, at a reasonable cost, while at the same time increasing community support for music. Adventus has the support of principals at 8 schools and their music teachers to implement the program, endorsements by the Royal Conservatory of Music, Maritime Conservatory of Music, and other education organizations. The research component of the project that would measure the impact of the program is currently not addressed. Adventus is interested in discussing this possibility with interested faculty members. In light of the current results for math and literacy testing in Nova Scotia, and the resulting questions around how to improve the math and reading success rates of our students, Adventus believes this to be an extremely important, timely, and interesting project.
