Just 45 minutes for a great Mitzvah!
H I N E Y N U
Belmont Senior Living is the building to the immediate south of Temple Solel. It is a senior living residence that has a tinyJewish population of 10-12 people. Severalmonths ago, these Jewish residents requested
our Hineynu, caring community committee from the temple, to assist them in organizing a small Shabbat Service for theresidents prior to their dinner on a Friday evening.
Much to our surprise the residents came to our little Shabbatwith 100% participation. There we were, our little minyangathering in their general dining room, performing the blessingover the candles and a piece of pita. The residents were delightedand most gracious. At the conclusion they asked if we couldreturn. How can you say, “No” to such a request?
Since that time, Belmont residents look forward (on a bi-weeklybasis) to their dependable Shabbat Service. We have assured thattheir staff provides them with a fresh loaf of Challah and we’veeven incorporated the blessing over a kosher “fruit of the vine”.
This event is calendared by Esther Nassimi and is fulfilled everyother week by volunteers who graciously give just 45 minutesof their time on Friday, late afternoon. Many young familieshave found this to be a fulfilling and rewarding opportunity to
incorporate this Mitzvah into their lives, while teaching theirchildren the routine of Shabbat and prayers. Some of ourvolunteers have incorporated a musical element into this shortservice as well.
We ask if you can spare 45 minutes on a Friday afternoon, pleasecontact us. The service is short, sweet and very informal. Weencourage you to bring yourself, kids, friends or family. Thereis no minimum or maximum number. Consider bringing afriend to share this wonderful Mitzvah with. We look forwardto hearing from you.
Please call or email; Esther Nassimi ([email protected] 760.315.8100).

why is israel important?
by Ellen Fox
Dear Parents:
This summer, I spent three weeks livingand studying in Jerusalem. One of theclasses I took was called “Engaging inIsrael.” During this class, we discussed(and read articles) about Israel, and abouthow to teach Israel to our students.
On the last day of class, we were asked towrite about why Israel is important to us,and why/how we should teach it to thestudents in our schools. This was animportant question for me because I havesuch a deep love for Israel and I try tointegrate a love of Israel into the curriculum, but I know that there are a lot of mixedfeelings about Israel on the part of manyof the parents of the children in the school.
During recent years, Israel has received a great deal of negative attention in themedia – even to the point of saying thatIsrael should not exist. But I have beenthinking about why Israel SHOULD exist, and the positive aspects we teach ourchildren about Israel.
I would like to share with you why I thinkIsrael is important to the Jewish people, and how we teach about Israel in theReligious School.
Israel is the Jewish homeland. It is the placewhere our biblical ancestors lived, and whereJews have lived from then until now.Everywhere you walk in Israel, you arestanding on or near a place that is mentionedin the bible. You are able to touch the outerwall of the Holy Temple. You are able tovisit the graves of our ancestors.
Israel is a place where Jews can come if no other place will take them. Israel hashelped thousands of Jewish refugees fromall over the world come to Israel, and hashelped them once they arrived on itsshores – Jews from Europe after theHolocaust, and Jews from Ethiopia andRussia who were not allowed to live asJews in those countries. While I do notbelieve that we should live in fear of beingexpelled from the countries in which we live,it is comforting to know that we have a placeto go if our religious lives are threatened.
Israel is a place where the Hebrewlanguage is kept alive. Hebrew is spokennot only in synagogue, but in everydaylanguage. Hebrew is the language heardin the grocery stores, on the busses and inthe homes. The Hebrew language reflectswho we are as a people.
Israel is a place where time is markedaccording to “Jewish rhythm.” Every Fridayafternoon, most stores close and mostfamilies gather to spend time together –whether it be for a Friday night Shabbatmeal or just to enjoy being with relativesand friends. Schools, stores and businessesclose for Jewish holidays and familiesspend time with one another. On IsraeliIndependence Day, there are celebrationseverywhere – on the streets, in parks, inhomes. On Holocaust Remembrance Day,the radio/television stations cease allregular programming and read the namesof the six million who died. On Purim, thestreets are filled with children and adultswho are dressed in costume.
Throughout history, Jews have prayed forIsrael, written poems and songs about ourlonging to be in Israel, cried when Israel’sexistence was threatened, and celebratedIsrael’s successes. Jews strove throughoutthe centuries (when Israel was not a Jewishcountry) to go back to the land of theirancestors and regain statehood.
Israel needs us as a friend. Just like wewould treat a friend, we may not believethat everything Israel is doing is right, but we still need to be a friend to Israelduring these difficult times.
We need to be critical consumers when we read and hear news about Israel. Everyreport we read has its own agenda and bias.
Israel is our spiritual and religious center. In our prayers, we ask that Israel beblessed with peace. At weddings, we breaka glass to remember the destruction of theHoly Temple. At every seder, we proclaim,“Next year in Jerusalem!”
Israel is our political and national center. Itis the only state in the world where Jewishpolitical parties vie with one another to holdthe reins of power. It is the only state whose
national anthem speaks of the Jews’ ages-old hope of living in freedom in our land.
Israel is our cultural center. Israel hosts a thriving Jewish cultural life filled withpoetry, music, plays, film, and art. Jews allover the world listen to Israeli singers, attend theater/movies that are produced in Israel, and buy Israeli art.
Love of Israel is actually a mitzvah, spelledout in the Torah. In Hebrew, this mitzvahis called Ahavat Tziyon (love of Zion). This mitzvah is referred to by the prophetIsaiah, who said: “Rejoice with Jerusalemand be glad for her.”
In summary, although we may be conflictedabout some of the things Israel is doing, and we may feel like we don’t know enoughabout Israel, it is still important to talkabout Israel with our students. Even thoughwe may not approve of what Israel does, weneed to teach the children that it is ourspiritual, religious, political, national andcultural center. We need to teach them thatit is important to love Israel like we love a friend – through good times and bad. The following poem by Yehudah Amichaiexpresses the circle that continues to goround and round through the centuries inIsrael and in the Jewish people – the linkbetween old and new, ancient and modern, our past, ourselves and our children.

“When I was born into this world, I found many carob trees planted by my father and grandfather. Just as they planted trees for me, I am planting trees for my children and grandchildren
so they will be able to eat the fruit of these trees.”
One of the many ways that members of our congregationhave chosen to express their deep commitment to ourcommunity is by naming Temple Solel in their will, in their
trust, in another planned charitable gift, or by making an endowmentdonation. This is a way to make a lasting contribution that continuesyour Jewish legacy in perpetuity.
We wish to thank those generous donors and to acknowledgethem as members of the Legacy Circle.
If you have named Temple Solel in your will or trust, or if you havemade another form of legacy gift to Temple Solel, we would like toacknowledge your generosity. Any amount of giving is greatlyappreciated. Please call Robin Rubin at (760) 436-0654, and we will beglad to add your name to the membership list for the Legacy Circle.
