MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Stephen A. Fleming, President & CEO

Family businesses include businesses of all sizes, from mom and pop shops to some of the country’s largest companies — in fact, currently, more than a one-third of Fortune 500 companies are family controlled.

As the CEO of a family-owned business, I am proud to note the significance of family businesses in our region and state. Family businesses employ 80% of the U.S. workforce and create 85% of the new jobs in our country. Family businesses include businesses of all sizes, from mom and pop shops to some of the country’s largest companies — in fact, currently, more than a one-third of Fortune 500 companies are family controlled. Since many of you own, operate, and/or are employed by family businesses, I’m going to focus my comments for this quarter’s newsletter on the Capital Region Family Business Center (“FBC”), the largest independent Family Business Center in California. I have been on the Board for the FBC for several years and in April will be succeeding my friend, Steve Bender, as the Board’s President. Since its formation in 2007, this 501(c)(3) non-profit organization has helped our region’s family businesses grow and prosper. The FBC’s membership includes some of the biggest names in the Sacramento business community, such as Clark Pacific, Burger Rehab Systems, Holt of California, Raley’s, Nugget Markets, Lundberg Family Farms, Teichert, and many more.

Family businesses, of course, face all of the same challenges as non-family owned businesses, plus their own unique issues involving ownership, governance, succession planning, family members working in the business, etc. The FBC’s mission is to assist its members in meeting these challenges with a terrific suite of programs, including:

• Family Forums (Major Programs with Keynote Speakers and Panel Discussions)

• Affinity Groups (Women in the Family Business, Next Generation Leaders, and Founders/CEOs)

• Family Business Leadership Series (Designed to Prepare the Next Generation for Leadership Roles)

• Talk Technical To Me (Programs Focused on a Variety of Technical Topics) • Generations Conference (A Two Day Conference held at the Sacramento

Convention Center)

I can tell you without hesitation, that the FBC is a wonderful resource for leaders in family businesses who are looking to connect with and learn from other family owned businesses, train their next generation of leaders, and continue their commitment to being lifetime learners. Although largely a volunteer-based organization, the FBC has been growing and recently hired a full-time Executive Director, Stella Premo. CLIENT PROFILE

New Leaf is a community-oriented company providing full-scope Representative Payee services to California Regional Center clients. Regional Centers are contracted with the State of California to provide services for individuals with developmental disabilities, such as cerebral palsy, autism, hearing loss, and intellectual challenges. Many of these individuals do not have family members or a close friend to assist them in their finances or the management of benefits.

By providing Representative Payee services, New Leaf helps create financially stable living environments for some of California’s most vulnerable populations while alleviating Regional Center staff members of the time-consuming duties of representative payee responsibilities. New Leaf provides money management, reporting, and technical services exclusively for Regional Center consumers who receive Social Security and Medi-Cal benefits. Their services include: representative payee and money management services for clients in independent settings or out-of-home-placements; assistance for difficult and complex issues with the Social Security Administration; and ongoing benefit eligibility review for SSI and Medi-Cal benefits.

Program Director & CEO, Ali Tabatabai, along with his father Masoud, established New Leaf in 2010. At that time, he was working from his home and helping roughly 50 people monitor their funds and expenses, improve their quality of life, and ensure their continuity of access to public benefits. New Leaf now has 15 employees and serves nearly 3000 people around the state. As the need for representative payee services continues to increase, as does the referrals New Leaf receives from Regional Centers. For each center it serves, New Leaf looks to establish a local service office and a relationship with the local Social Security Administration branch and county health eligibility workers.

New Leaf’s mission is to constantly strengthen communities by ensuring that those with developmental disabilities consistently have their basic needs met, have access to services they are entitled to, and see an improvement in their overall standard of living.

Financial CurrentsEMPLOYEE HIGHLIGHT

Matthew Huber SVP, Deposit Operations ManagerNatomas Corporate Office

River City Bank’s Matt Huber has worked his way up the ranks to become a Senior Vice President within Operations. Here, he dishes on the beauty of the Upper Northwest, the importance of integrity, and why a caped crusader is his hero.

Hometown: Visalia, CA

First Job: I was 15 and worked during the summer for the County of Tulare performing clerical work.

First Car: I drove around in a 1986 White Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Favorite Quote: “Do the right thing.”

Favorite Movie: “Batman.” I think Michael Keaton was the best Batman in the franchise.

Favorite city to visit: Seattle, WA. Seattle is a beautiful city surrounded by water, where the food and cultural scene is amazing. I travel there mainly for the boating, usually heading all the way up towards the San Juan Islands located just south of the Canadian border. On a few occasions, we have gone further north to another favorite spot of mine, Victoria, BC.

Book you are currently reading: The Big Red Barn by Margaret Wise Brown. I am reading it over and over and over again to my two-year-old!

Who is your favorite hero/heroine of fiction? Batman. He fights for justice, all the while sacrificing his personal life. Plus, he has a wide array of really impressive “Bat” vehicles like the Batcopter, the Batboat, and of course the Batmobile.

Which talent would you most like to have? I’d like to have dance moves like my wife.

What is your idea of perfect happiness? Traveling, being surrounded by my family, listening to my baby boy say “Daddy, Daddy,” and a hefty retirement fund.

What is the most important lesson you’ve ever learned? Hard work pays off.

What do you consider your greatest achievement? I recently achieved my goal of becoming the SVP Deposit Operations Manager. I began my career at River City Bank as the Assistant Branch Manager at the Natomas Branch. I slowly made my way up the ranks and I’ve been able to do this because River City Bank creates an environment that is conducive to growth.

Which causes/nonprofits do you support? Junior Achievement. I support Junior Achievement because I believe early exposure to correctly managing your finances is important. JA helps build a foundation upon which students can make intelligent financial decisions that last a lifetime, including decisions related to income, expenses, savings, and credit.

What do you like best about working at River City Bank? Along with the atmosphere of integrity, working for a highly motivated company is inspiring. Being surrounded by such a high caliber of co-workers helps me to strive for growth in my career.
