MANILA - The bidding process for the engineering design of the Light Rail Transit-Line 2 (LRT-2) West extension project has begun.
The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) said it is now looking for interested contractors to bid for engineering consultancyservices worth P200 million.
The project involves the design and construction of the 3-kilometer westward extension of the existing system from the current end-station in Rectoup to Pier 4.
It will entail the construction of three new stations in Tutuban, Divisoria, and Pier 4.
The Tutuban station will be located next to the Cluster Mall while the Divisoria station will be located near the intersection of Recto Avenue andAsuncion Street.
The new station in Pier 4, meanwhile, will be 50 meters north of Zaragoza Street.
"We continue to modernize our rail systems by building intermodal transportation facilities for convenient and efficient commutes. After recentlybreaking ground for the LRT-2 East Extension, we are now moving to likewise extend the railway up to the port area, to serve more riders," saidTransportation Sec. Jun Abaya.
The DOTC expects the opening and submission of bids to take place within next month, and awarding by the fourth quarter of the year.
The Detailed Engineering Design is expected to be completed around four to six months.
The engineering design will serve as the basis for the construction or civil works component of the project, which will be bid out once the design iscompleted. It will cover the three stations, the tracks, the viaduct, and electromechanical requirements including five new four-car rolling stocks.
Groundbreaking for the LRT-2 East extension project was held last month, and is expected to be operational by the third quarter of 2017.
The project will extend the system by 4.2 kilometers to Masinag in Antipolo City and is expected to cater to an additional 75,000 daily passengersliving in densely populated areas of Rizal.
