A warm welcome to the 24th Newlyn Fish Festival from the Newlyn Pier and Harbour CommissionersNewlyn is Cornwall’s premier fishing port, being situated on the South West tip of the Cornish Peninsula facing the Atlantic Ocean midway between Bretagne and Eire at the confluence of the English and Bristol Channels.

For centuries Newlyn fishermen have tenaciously gathered a bounteous harvest of more than 50 species of prime fish from these waters through good times and bad.

Newlyn Harbour is a Trust Port administered by the Newlyn Pier and Harbour Commissioners (NPHC), a

statutory body consisting of unpaid volunteers with relevant skills who devise strategy and policy in conjunction with the Harbour Master who fulfils the executive role delivering essential port services to its stakeholder customers.

These services include slipway, fish market, vessel berthing, water, ice via the Cornish Ice Company, fuel via various suppliers and a property estate primarily let to fishing industry tenants.

NPHC are long-standing staunch supporters of Newlyn Fish Festival working with it to promote and showcase Newlyn’s diverse catching and fish processing sectors.

We wish the Festival, our visitors and all who take part in it another hugely successful and enjoyable event.

A WARM WELCOME!

Supporting the MissionPoverty, debt, loneliness are some facts of life in our fishing communities. At best, fishing can be a precarious business. Success depends on a host of factors from the weather to fluctuating fish prices to restrictive quotas. Worst hit have been the men of the inshore fleet. Many barely scrape a living and experience spiralling debts.

The Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen is committed to the welfare of fishermen around the shores of the UK. Here in Cornwall we have a network covering every fishing port and cove to ensure that we reach active and retired fishermen and provide hope in difficult times.

Thank you for attending today’s fish festival and thank you for your support, which will help fishermen and their families here in Cornwall.

Superintendent Keith Dickson, The Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen. www.fishermensmission.org.uk

MEET THE CHEFS

Ben Tunnicliffe took over the Tolcarne Inn last year. Using local and seasonal produce and the best of the daily catch landed in Newlyn, his vision is to create a pub that

is a focus for lovers of fish with a product which is both excellent and affordable. Ben was awarded a Michelin star at the Abbey restaurant in Penzance regaining it until 2008 when he moved to the Scarlet Hotel in Mawgan Porth.

We are delighted to welcome students from Penwith College. Josh McKay and Syrus Pickhaver are going into their third year and work as commis chefs in the Penzance area. Syrus has just returned from working at a Michelin starred restaurant in Paris for two weeks, and Josh will be going to do the same in November 2013. Dave Izzard is head chef lecturer at Penwith College’s training kitchen and Senara restaurant. Dave has worked in France and Cape Town, before returning to the UK as head chef in various restaurants/gastro pubs.

Nathan outlaw has three restaurants, including the two-Michelin starred Restaurant Nathan Outlaw in Rock. His passion and knowledge of fish and seafood is considerable and he has an ethos of

cooking simply to allow the flavours to shine through. In 2012, Academy Nathan Outlaw at Cornwall College opened. Nathan will be signing copies of his book ‘Nathan Outlaw’s British Seafood’ at the Edge Of The World Books stall by the Festival Information Point after this demo.

Prosenjit Sanjay Kumar is a chef and aspiring social entrepreneur, in love with Cornish fish. Having gathered cooking experiences from around the world, Sanjay champions healthy eating and has appeared on many radio and television shows identifying the rich connection of Newlyn with fishing. Sanjay aspires to introduce a new generation of chefs to the joys of cooking and, today, he is doing just that, as four kids from Newlyn Junior School will be on stage cooking with him.

Keir Meikle and Jay orrey from the Navy Inn in Penzance have a passion for food. Now in its 10th year, this highly successful pub restaurant is renowned for its wide range of

constantly changing fresh fish dishes, consistently winning awards for all of its food be it fish, meat or its innovative desserts. It is also their 10th anniversary of cooking at the Festival. They enjoy it every year and we love having them back too!

THE FISH DISpLAY

The stunning Fish Display, created by Sue and Ducan Lucas of Passionate About Fish, is the centerpiece of the Fish Market and a showcase for the vast array of species which are caught this side of the Atlantic.

Duncan has worked for Young’s Seafoods for over 9 years as Seafood Specialist working within all areas of the seafood industry. His experience covers both independent retailers and major supermarkets as well as primary and secondary processing of chilled and ready to eat seafood. He is recognised as a leading authority within the industry, and is probably the most highly skilled ‘fishmonger’ in the UK. He holds many awards including the Guinness World Record for filleting halibut!

Sue has spent all her working life in the seafood industry. For almost 20 years, she thoroughly enjoyed life as a fishmonger, running busy independent fish shops. She then moved into manufacturing and spent over 10 years working with ‘ready to eat’ seafood. She is responsible for having developed some of the highest quality ‘Award Winning’ seafood products available through the UK’s leading supermarkets. Sue currently works for national retailer Sainsburys within product development.

Page 12: Newlyn Fish Festival 2013

Fish FilmsCome and see what it is like to be fishing around our coast and out in the Atlantic. Whether you buy your fish from one of the traders here today or from your local supermarket, remember this is where it all begins. Our Fish Films aims to bring you a glimpse of the tough, demanding and often dangerous life which these fishermen face to bring you this wonderful food. Fish Films, hosted by Suzi and Alistair Sinclair from the Newlyn Filmhouse, can be seen in the large walk-in fridge in the middle of the Fish Market. Equipment has been generously loaned by Simpsons Multimedia of Penzance.

Dan the Fishman’s Fish WorkshopsChildren’s fish workshops with Dan the Fishman from Clovelly.Come and enjoy the fun and magic of cooking your own seafood treats with Dan and Tim throughout the day. On the right as you enter the Fish Market from the site entrance. All welcome and it’s free!

Penlee lifeboatsPenlee Lifeboat Station has 2 lifeboats: the Ivan Ellen is a Severn class lifeboat, the largest and most powerful lifeboat in the RNLI. It is 17m long and weighs 44 tons. It has 2500 hp with a range of 250 miles at a full speed of 25 knots. She has a crew of 7. The Paul Alexander is an Atlantic 75 inshore lifeboat. It is 7.5 m long and has 150hp with a top speed of 34 knots with 3 crew.Penlee is one of the busiest lifeboat stations in the south west with up to 65 rescues and over 100 people assisted each year. Penlee is well-known because of the tragic disaster in 1981 when the lifeboat launched into hurricane conditions to rescue 8 people from the Union Star. All hands from both vessels, 16 in all, lost their lives. Penlee today has 26 volunteer crew members. Only the Coxswain/Mechanic is paid a salary by the RNLI. Both lifeboats will be assisting the gig race and, afterwards, taking part in a rescue demonstration with the pleasure craft, the Cormorant.

HARBOUR EVENTS

3rd Annual Lugger-Rowing World ChampionshipAt approximately 11:00, these majestic boats, lovingly cared for by individuals and groups who have the passion to keep them going, will once again race the length of Newlyn Harbour – not under sail nor engine, but powered by their own crews heaving on their sweeps, the traditional long oar used to manoeuvre the craft in and out of harbour before the days of engines. Marvel at the skill and strength! Gasp at the blisters and torn ligaments! Smell the sweat and cheer them on to victory and the coveted Gold Pilchard!Other harbour events will include jet-skis, RNLI and open boats including the Spirit of Mystery and the Irene.

Newlyn Fish Festival lifeboat gig raceGigs were working boats used to ferry pilots out to incoming vessels to help them navigate safely into harbour. Gig racing was born out of the competition to get pilots out to boats first (and receive the pilot fee) .Today, it is a rapidly expanding competitive sport, with a strong tradition in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The boats of 6 rowers and a cox will race at the Festival for the coveted Trafalgar Trophy. The race takes the rowers out into Mounts Bay to the Low Lee buoy, then Gear Pole, finishing in the harbour in front of the fish market.Parade of gigs 12:00Start of race 12:30Presentation to winners 13:30Follow the gigs on board the launch “Cormorant” setting off from the pontoons at 12:00. Adults £3 children £1.50.

Look out for Irene, a trading ketch with five head sails built in Bridgwater in 1907. She carried a variety of cargoes around the west country and to Ireland well into the days of steam and diesel powered coasters. She is owned by Dr Leslie Morrish. Her skipper, Rob Salvidge, a Newlyn Harbour Commissioner, says “Helping to plan the future of Newlyn Harbour is very exciting. There are great challenges and good prospects ahead. We need to move with the times and attract different types of vessels, including heritage vessels such as Irene, and celebrate the skills upon which the fortunes of this strategically important harbour have been built.”

HARBOUR EVENTS

Spirit of Mystery returnsWe welcome back the Spirit of Mystery, a 37’ Mounts Bay lugger, built by adventurer Pete Goss for the 2008 recreation of the epic 12,000 mile voyage by seven Cornishmen. These seven, after a discussion in the Star Inn, set sail from Newlyn in 1854 in the original Mystery bound for the gold fields of Australia.

Spirit of Mystery is now owned by Paul and Emma Doidge who are based in Cornwall and intend to cruise around the Cornish coast and, in winter, set sail for warmer climes.

Newlyn welcomes Yan GironThe Festival is officially opened at 10:00 by the highly entertaining Breton fishing expert Yan Giron. Yan is one of the world’s foremost authorities on fish, fishing and fishing policies, having worked as a consultant and advisor in many parts of the world including much of Africa and South-east Asia as well as within the European Union.

With typical Celtic pride and passion, he champions fishing as a seasonal harvesting operation, as opposed to one of production, which supermarkets and traders should work with rather than

against, thereby offering customers what is available in season and of the very best quality.

Yan’s visit to Newlyn reaffirms the strong historic links between Cornish and Breton fishermen, emphasising the potential for shared benefits from a reformed Common Fisheries Policy that acknowledges the mistakes that have been made. A reformed policy will hopefully

deliver regional management and encourage sustainable fishing practices that deliver healthy stocks and long term prosperity to a resilient industry which is witnessing investment in safer vessels and training as it emerges from a difficult period with a new sense of purpose and optimism.

Newlyn Fish Festival is proud and delighted to welcome Yan to Newlyn.

FISH TALES & FUN WORKSHOpS

Tales, trails and workshops for kids

The Fish Tales Tent has got bigger! Well, some fish have very big tails and even bigger tales! Come along to the Tent on the Mary Williams Pier and see what we have caught in our net. There’ll be mermaids and pirates, fishermen and fish-wives, salty dogs and smugglers and ... oh no! He’s back! It’s the Return of Sharky the Shark!

It doesn’t matter how old you are, if you’re young at heart, be enthralled by some of our best story-tellers. Hosted by Tracy Bowers (who knows a thing or two about Sharky), lurking in the depths will be some very strange fish indeed including John Brolly, Angela Stoner and Craig Johnson with his unmissable Squashbox Theatre.

New this year in the Tent you can get creating at Annie Vigar’s Creation Station for a fishy-themed workshop for kids.

And talking of workshops for kids, look out for Dan The Fishman’s fish workshops in the Fish Market.

And kids! Have you followed the Fishy Trail yet? If you didn’t pick up the Fishy Trail sheet with this programme, don’t worry. Get one from the Newlyn School stall by the Fish Market, which is also where you go to claim your prize afterwards. But be quick, the best prizes will go first!

Page 21: Newlyn Fish Festival 2013

The Sea Show is a quirky and hilarious mix of puppet show, natural history and comedy cabaret.

Meet crazy characters like Morwenna the ‘beautiful’ mermaid, Ruan the reformed seagull and salty seadog Captain Pemburthy, as well as a cast of mischievous sea-squirts, anemones,

limpets, crabs and pilchards. Come and celebrate the sea with tall tales, silly slapstick, fantastic facts,

live music and songs – unmissable fun for children and adults of all ages!

The Sea Show is the creation of Craig Johnson, an actor, musician and puppeteer, and long-standing member

of Cornwall’s renowned Kneehigh Theatre.

Come and see one of the special 30-minute performances of Squashbox Theatre’s “Sea Show” at 11.30am, 1.30pm and 3.30pm.

The Festival Committee would like to acknowledge the work and dedication of the Newlyn Harbour Master Andrew Munson and his dedicated staff. Every year, they prepare the site for our festival. It takes skilful planning and preparation to keep the port open for boats to land their fish right up until the start of our day. When the Festival closes, they clean and prepare the market for the boats to land their catches and get everything back to normal.

Newlyn is a busy fishing port and Andrew has been Harbour Master here for 44 years, the longest-serving Harbour Master in the country. He has seen many changes take place, notably the Mary Williams Pier, which Queen Elizabeth II opened, and the new fish market and quay extension, opened by Princess Diana. This year will be Andrew’s last as Harbour Master and the Committee thanks him for his help and co-operation over 24 successful festivals. We wish him and his wife Carol a happy and peaceful retirement.
