UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a young, prosperouscountry with one of the fastest growing GDPs in theworld. And, as the region’s financial and services sector has boomed, there is a high demand from businesses for highly skilled accountancy professionals who are fullyconversant with international practices.

Many ACAs are attracted to the UAE bythe prospect of not paying personal taxes, but often it’s the lifestyle that keeps themthere. The local currency is linked to theUS dollar offering some protection againstinflation, especially when many other

currencies are weakening. Anthony O’Sullivan, a partner at Ernst & Young in Dubai, moved to the Middle Eastsoon after qualifying, 11 years ago. He citescareer progression as a good reason to workin the UAE,

‘The region is expanding so fast, driven byoil and gas revenues. Dubai companies arenow using their spending power to buyinternational businesses and expandoverseas; our mergers and acquisitions workis extremely busy so we are expanding. That

means accountants can move up the career ladder very quickly.’

As with all international placements, it cantake time to acclimatise to local practices.

Accountants planning to move to the UAEwill have to complete documentation andorganise accommodation before arrival.

While cultural diversity is one of the region’sstrong points, new arrivals need to bemindful of cultural misunderstandings anddifferent ways of working.

To meet the need for highly skilledaccountants, the institute launched an

ACA training programme in Dubai in2007. Nauman Asif, who works for PwCin Dubai, has noticed that the influx of

young accountants and rise of numbers

of domestic accountancy students iscreating a strong professionalcommunity. ‘There is a surge in thenumber of ICAEW registered students inthe region’ he says.

So what does the future for accountantslook like in the UAE? Despite the recenteconomic downturn, oil and gas willcontinue to generate cash for investment. City infrastructures aredeveloping fast, and as the region

Rachel trained in the UK with a wellrespected mid-tier firm and qualifiedin 2000. After all the hard work to gether qualification Rachel decided thatan international move would be agood next step in her career.

Having discussed her options, Racheldecided Bermuda fitted what she waslooking for: a focus on financial services, entry to the Big Four, and a lifestyle thatwas very different to living in London.

At the end of her two year contract,Rachel had some choices to make. Shewas offered the chance to stay on withthe firm as a manager and was alsooffered roles within Big Four firms inCanada, Hong Kong and Australia. Asshe was really enjoying her work and her

location Rachel decided to stay whereshe was. After only another two yearsshe was promoted to senior manager within the financial services team – apromotion that came far faster than if she had stayed in London.

In her fifth year on the island, a European fund management firm, one of her clients in Bermuda, offered her a positionin Paris as an analyst. Her partners werevery happy to support the move and she

PricewaterhouseCoopers believesmobility benefits everyone. Employeesget a richer career experience. The firmgets more rounded business consultants. And clients get people who are betterequipped to offer sound, well-informedadvice. It’s a win-win situation.

For that reason, the firm activelyencourages movement across businessareas and countries. In the first six monthsof 2008, 763 PwC people were seconded

from roles overseas to the UK, and 462UK staff moved to roles overseas.

Colin Bates, one of PwC’s Partners, hascertainly made mobility work for him.

I’ve been at PwC for 11 years now andworked across many different clients,

countries and business practices. I startedout in Bristol and then, post qualification, moved to a different practice in Londonbefore relocating to Germany where I wasinvolved in a significant acquisition.I firmly believe that a wide range of experience develops your skills and bringsbroader business knowledge – and that’swhat clients are looking for. The more youmove around, the further you extend y our network, external and internal. My adviceto others? Think flexibly.’
