News and Notes 7
Hello Newcomers,
It has gotten to the time when some of us have been in New Bern long enough that we
no longer qualify to be members of the Newcomers Club; so we will turn the Club over to
new leadership. We have had members step forward to volunteer for most of the posi-
tions and we will vote on the following slate of candidates at the April General Meeting:
Co-Presidents - Don & Sherry Banzi Vice President - Dana Burnham
Secretary - Karen Bartsch Treasurer - Jim Kelly
Activity Chair - Steve Eppinger Membership Chair - Joan Muller
Newsletter Editor - Gloria Kelly Social Chair - VACANT
As you can see, we need a volunteer for the Social Chair, whose responsibilities are to
bring the soft drinks to the General meetings and plan the Holiday and Spring events. Many
contacts have been made over the years so the majority of effort is to “let you fingers do
the walking.” Prior to the vote we will ask for nominations from the floor so that any
other interested parties can have their names added to the list of candidates.
Our Spring Event this year will be a Pork and Chicken BBQ at Creekside Park, catered by
Roland’s BBQ of Beaufort. The menu will include BBQ Pork and Fried Chicken, Potato
Salad, Cole Slaw, Baked Beans, Hush Puppies, Lemonade and Iced Tea. The price will be a
measly $10 per person and we will also have cake with ice cream (if we can figure out a
way to keep it cold). There will be more information available at the April 14 General
Meeting.
Speaking of the April meeting, April 22 is Earth Day so Don and Sherry Banzi have invited
Bobbi Waters from the Coastal Environmental Partnership to make a presentation entitled:
“Where Your Trash Goes When It Leaves Your Home!” Our garbage isn’t sent to Fresh
Kills or trucked to Pennsylvania or put on a barge now that we are here in North Carolina,
so this will be information to help us be more responsible with our waste.

The upcoming months will again have some interesting crafts for us to try. You don’t need to be an artist or an experienced crafter to do any of these classes; you just need an open mind, a laugh in your heart, and a willingness to try. Please contact me immediately if you are interested in taking on this fun group. I have lots of information share with you so you will not need to start from scratch.
Pinochle
Whether you already know how to play Pinochle, or want to learn, this is the right
time to do it. Pinochle is a card game that is easier than bridge but just as much fun
to play. Singles or couples are welcome but it would be best to have an even count
per night. Pinochle Club generally meets on the last Saturday of the month. For
March that will be the 27th, 7:00p.m., at the home of Frank and Ingrid Phelps.
