Newcastle Music Festival Festival Strings Music Booklet Welcome to the 2019 Festival Strings in association with the Christ Church Camerata, Newcastle Strings and the Newcastle Music Festival. In this booklet you will find all of the parts for the Festival Strings. The repertoire is as follows: Purcell: Overture from Dido and Aeneas Handel: Air from Water Music Lascia ch’io pianga from Rinaldo (with Deborah Humble) Bartok: Rumanian Folk Dances Farkas: Five Hungarian Dances Banney: Three Folk Songs The parts are designed to offer opportunities and challenges for players across a wide range of abilities. The following rough guidelines are suggested in choosing your parts: Violins: 1 st Violin Sixth grade AMEB and above: all pieces Fourth grade: everything except Bartok 2 nd Violin Fourth grade: everything Third grade: everything except Bartok 3 rd Violin There are third violin parts for the Five Hungarian Folk Dances and the Three Folk Songs. Violas: Fourth grade AMEB and above: all pieces Second to Third Grade: all except Bartok There are second viola parts for the Five Hungarian Folk Dances and the Three Folk Songs. Cello, Bass: Fourth grade AMEB and above: all pieces Second to Third Grade: all except Bartok There are second viola parts for the Five Hungarian Folk Dances and the Three Folk Songs. Rehearsal dates: Please arrive at each rehearsal 15-20 minutes before the starting time to be ready to play at the beginning of the rehearsal. A reminder that the rehearsal schedule is as follows: Sunday, August 4, 2-4pm (Merewether High School, Pokolbin St entrance) Saturday, August 17, 10-11.30, Christ Church Cathedral (NB this rehearsal may finish earlier than 11.30) Sunday, August 18, 12noon-1pm, Christ Church Cathedral, Church St, Newcastle Concert: Sunday, August 18, 2.30pm, Christ Church Cathedral, Church St, Newcastle What to bring: Please bring your instrument, a music stand (clearly labelled with your name), a 2B (or softer) pencil and eraser, and water/snack if necessary. About the concert: The concert will be the Finale of the Newcastle Music Festival, featuring the Christ Church Camerata with mezzo-soprano Deborah Humble, conducted by David Banney. In the first half of the concert the Festival Strings will join the Camerata, and the second half will be given by the Camerata. Dress: Black trousers/skirt, white shirt/blouse, black shoes. (No miniskirts please!) Tickets: After playing in the first half of the concert, Festival Strings participants are entitled to watch the second half of the concert for free. For friends, family and community, tickets are available via the Newcastle Music Festival website. However, there will be a special offer for Festival Strings players – each player will be entitled to purchase two adult tickets at $20 each, or one family ticket for $50. These tickets must be purchased online, and instructions for purchasing the tickets will be provided after you register. VIOLIN 2
