3MAYOR’S WELCOME

On behalf of the Newcastle City Council, it is my honor to welcome you to Newcastle Days, and the city’s 20th anniversary celebration. I encourage you to visit the booths of our sponsors, to enjoy the offer-ings of our food and drink vendors, and — most of all — to revel in the company of your Newcastle neigh-bors!

Like you, I am blessed to call Newcastle home. Since incorpora-tion in 1994, the city has grown into one of the most sought after communities on the Eastside. Renowned for our beautiful parks, open space and trails — but most of all for its sense of community — Newcastle is a great place to raise a family or to start a business. It is a diverse and welcoming city, recognized nationally as one of the premier small cities in America. I am proud of what we have accom-

plished together.Though

young in com-parison to our neighboring cit-ies, Newcastle has a rich histo-ry. Coal discov-ered here in the 1870s resulted in a population boom locally while simultaneously feeding the growth of industry in Seattle and on the Eastside. The Baima House, on 138th Avenue Southeast, stands as one of the oldest struc-tures in King County, and as a remnant of those early days. So, too, does the historic Newcastle Cemetery, just a short walk north of Lake Boren Park on 129th Avenue Southeast. Visiting either represents a step back in time.

Newcastle’s growth continued throughout the next century — first as rural farmland and later as a suburban refuge.

The push for incorporation of the city of Newcastle began, in earnest, in the early 1990s. The much earlier incorporations of Issaquah (1892), Renton (1901) and Bellevue (1953) left an “island” of unincorporated King County, known unofficially as Newcastle and/or Newport Hills. Bellevue’s annexation of Newport Hills in 1993 spurred a public vote in favor of incorporation as the city of Newcastle in 1994. It is remark-able what we have achieved since, through good times and bad. As a new, longtime or even pre-incor-poration resident, you are a part of that journey!

A special thanks goes to this year’s Newcastle Days sponsors, without whom this celebra-tion would not be possible. This year’s Presenting Sponsors are Waste Management and Regency Newcastle. Our Platinum level sponsors include the Boeing Employees Credit Union, Coal Creek YMCA, U.W. Valley Medical Center and AT&T. Our Gold level sponsors include The Golf Club at Newcastle, the Animal Hospital of Newport Hills, HomeStreet Bank, KeyBank and Apple Physical Therapy. I am deeply grateful to each for their support.

Finally, I want to extend my sincerest thanks to the volun-teer members of our Community Activities Commission and to our city staff and maintenance team, all of whom have labored for many months to bring you a great pro-gram and set of activities.

Thank you again for joining us at this year’s celebration!

In friendship,

Steve BuriMayor of Newcastle

Take a break and come hang out with neighbors, friends and a few local celebrities at the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce Beer Garden from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The beer lineup includes Mac n Jacks, Manny’s Pale Ale and Miller Light.

Chardonnay and cabernet wine will also be served at the Newcastle Chamber Beer Garden, along with bottles of water, sodas and light snacks.

The popular Venturettes return to the Beer Garden to pour beer and wine alongside Newcastle Chamber members.

Beer garden guests must be 21; chamber volunteers must verify I.D.

Lake Boren Park hosts five musi-cal performances center stage with a variety of backgrounds, during the annual Newcastle Days celebra-tion Saturday.

Keeping with tradition, local dance groups will kick off the day’s performances at 11:15 a.m., followed by children’s musician Johnny Bregar, sponsored by the King County Library System.

Bregar is a nationally known Seattle-based kids/family musician. He performs at many local festivals and is excited to be part of the Newcastle Days celebration.

In celebration of the city’s 20th anniversary of incorporation, Newcastle resident and classic acoustic guitar rock musician Gil René takes the stage at 1 p.m. René is a native of Ontario, Canada, but spent a good portion of his child-hood in Rochester, N.Y., relocating to the area more than 20 years ago.

René also performed at the city’s

incorporation inauguration event in 1994; it is only fitting René returns as we celebrate the city’s 20th year.

The music takes an ethnic twist at 2:30 p.m. with Ruzivo

(pronounced Roo-zee-voh), a Zimbabwean group performing a mixture of traditional Zimbabwean music based on the mbira, the spiritual instrument of the Shona people, as well as contemporary compositions based on the music of Sub-Saharan Africa.

Ruzivo began as a seven-piece marimba band in 2004. The group mixes four marimbas — soprano, alto, tenor and baritone — with bass guitar, drums and the mbira. What emerges is an infectious mix of Afropop music inspiring audi-ences to sing and dance along.

The Ambience Jazz Quartet then takes you back to the “Golden Era” of jazz at 4 p.m., offering an expe-rience into the deep array of the sounds from our great American jazz pioneers. This four-piece ensemble from Seattle specializes in jazz from the “Golden Era” of American music.

Q: Would your child benefit from a specialist?

A: A dentist who has trained two or more years beyond dental school in the particular oral health care of children from infancy through the teenage years.

A: Of course! Pediatric dentists are the “pediatricians” of dentistry.

Community parade marks 20th anniversary

The annual Newcastle Days celebration opens this year with a small community parade through Lake Boren Park Saturday, at 10:30 a.m.

The parade commemorates Newcastle’s 20th anniversary of incorporation. Led by the Boy Scout Troop 499 Color Guard and bagpiper Neil Hubbard (resi-dent bagpiper at The Golf Club at Newcastle), the parade includes local high school performing groups and dancers from nearby studios.

If your organization is interested in participating in this inaugural parade through the park, call city of Newcastle Community Activities Liaison Wendy Kirchner at 649-4444, ext. 142.

Please note that due to the short length of the parade route, entries will be limited and no motor vehi-cles will be allowed.

Brazilian and other Latin genres as well. The quartet blends the deep rich sound of the acoustic bass, the warm and engaging lines of the jazz guitar, and the infinitely varied and versatile sound of the wind synthesizer with smooth and sultry vocals to create their unique and exotic sound.

The city’s celebration ends on a high note at 5:30 p.m. with Alan White, legendary drummer from Yes and his band White. Considered by many to be one of the best rock drummers of all-time, White’s impressive résumé includes performing with the legendary John Lennon and Yoko Ono in the

Plastic Ono Band, collaborating with George Harrison on his album “All Things Must Pass” and touring with Joe Cocker. After more than 40 years of performance experience that includes more than 50 albums, White’s dossier reads like a who’s who of rock legends.

His latest group White performs cutting-edge, progressive modern music with a world-class band with soulful vocals accompanied by deli-cate acoustic and driving electric guitar, complemented by punchy keyboard work. Alan White is a Newcastle resident and has taken the stage at Newcastle Days for the

past several years. He has a large following of local and area fans.

Last year, the studio opened the Blue Dog Preschool with Performing Arts, designed to allow children to experience concepts through an age-appropriate, fun curriculum incorporating the per-forming arts.

Thank you for a joyful celebration

Twenty years a city and Newcastle can celebrate its found-ing with pride.

Newcastle Days provides that opportunity, but most of all, Newcastle can look proudly at its citizens, businesses and volunteers who help make this annual event a joyful celebration of community.

The Community Activities Commission with city staff mem-ber Wendy Kirchner and all the community volunteers spent hours designing the 2014 version of Newcastle Days.

City maintenance staff members always help with the physical put-ting together at Lake Boren Park. A special thanks to them. And all the sponsors who financially support Newcastle Days: We couldn’t do it without you.

And now, enjoy 2014 Newcastle Days.
