I think we've had enough winter and are now ready to move along to spring. The snow was beautiful as it drifted to earth and goodness knows we needed a break from good weather. For those who were worried we wouldn't have enough snow this winter, you can stop praying for the frozen stuff. The rest of us are over snow and ice. Finis. Good- bye. I saw a seed catalog at church last week, so I am encouraged. If seed cat- alogs are in the mail, can spring be far behind? I look at those publications as the real harbingers of spring. Robins can get mixed up and come early, but not seed catalogs. Thanks to all who have helped make the blankets for Ronald McDonald House. We are about to finish them and get them delivered. This is a per- fect example of how we can help in our community. We also collected items for the New- burgh Food Pantry Kids' Corner. If you haven't had a chance to make your donation, we'll wait until mid-February to deliver our gifts. For February, we will collect personal care products for the teens at the United Methodist Youth Home. They need shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes, underwear, socks, winter scarves and hats and gloves/ mittens. You can bring your donations to the Senior Center any time we are open, which as a rule is Monday- Friday, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. I hope you will invite your friends and family to come and hang out with us at the Center. We have fun every day (and you never know what will pop up in the fun category). Whether it's bin- go or cards, we're playing something every day we are open. If you don't know the games, we'll be glad to teach you so you can have fun with us. And, don't forget to tell all the seniors you know, and those you don't know yet, about lunches, exercise and other things we do here. We are a well-kept secret in Southwest Indiana and we need to spread the good word. Feel free to contact me at the Center or via email and let me know if there are programs you would like to have here at the Center. We can do week- ends if you'd like, too. Please be safe this winter. Don't take chances ifthe weather is icy/snowy. If you haven't had a flu shot - and you can take one - please go get one. The flu is not a bad cold. It's a different monster and people are dying from it. It's different from a cold in that you go from well to sick in just a few hours. You will have a fever and feel misera- ble. Please contact your doctor if you think you have the flu. There's medi- cine you can take that will make you feel better quicker. Infect your ene- mies at will, but stay away from your friends and family. ks to our February Day SponsorsWe appreciate our Day

Bestwishes to Marge and Dixieand our hopes for manymore happy years! Thankyou, Marge and Dixie, forincluding us in your special

day and being such loyalsupporters of the NSC.February 15, National Hippo

Day, is sponsored by Claireand Maureen Martin, inhonor of many special hip-pos in their lives, includingthe late hippo, Donna, who,was at the Evansville Zoowhen they were children, and the wonderful baby hip-po, Fiona, who resides at theCincinnati Zoo, and just cele-brated her 1st birthday!

Gardeners needed to start planningSeed catalogs have us wishing for springand warmer temperatures, and the freshveggies we get from our garden. We have new raised planters out in the

garden area that were built last fall by thevolunteers from Alcoa (Thanks, again!) andnow we need to start planning what toplant in them and the rest of the garden.First we need to find some garden soil to

fill the raised beds. Then we need adviceon what to plant and how to keep outcritters and the best way to water, etc.If you would like to help us with this task,

even if you don't want to play in the dirt,we'd love to have you. Call or email ourmanager and let her know your interest. Ameeting will be scheduled after we findvolunteers. Also, if you have a good source for seed-lings and rooted plants, please let us know.

We have some funding available but itwould be nice if someone would donateplants or let us have them at a reducedprice. Our garden was so appreciated last sum-mer. We ate fresh tomatoes, squash, pep-pers and green onions to our hearts con-tent.However, our old garden soil, outside the

raised beds, needs help before we plantthis year. We need to either removewhat's there or get some soil to put on topof it. It's been plowed deep enough thatwe have a lot of glass shards and brokenbricks at the top.It is in the realm of possibility that we

would not plant garden stuff outside theraised beds, but use that area for flowers. We have lots of options and we need in-put from experienced folks to help us havea great garden this summer. If you know any groups that might be will-

ing to maintain the garden for us once itgets planted, that would be helpful, too. AGirl Scout troop planted for us last year, and a couple of our members watered andweeded it, but it was a bigger task thantwo or three ladies could manage once thetemperatures reached the 90s.Master Gardeners, FFA, 4-H, scouts or

high school students who need servicehours are welcome to come and help. Please let us know your availability.

Bet you didn't know thatHippo loosely translates toRiver Horse in ancientGreek. Hippo Day, then, cel-ebrates the third largestmammal on Earth. We thinkhippos are amazingtoo! Thank you, Claire andMaureen, for your support.

Helping others is a theme this year at NSCOne of our themes this year at New-burgh Senior Center is that we are notthe end of the chain. That may soundfunny when you say it, but it meansthat even though we may not be asable as we used to be, we are still ca-pable of helping others in some capac-ity.Last fall we had a visit from a repre-

sentative of Ronald McDonald Housein Evansville. We were touched by allthe support they offer families withhospitalized children. So we offered to make some blankets

for the organization to give to theiryoung patients. After we finish the lastones, we will be ready to donate adozen blankets. And that's not all.We are serving as the distribution site

for monthly food boxes for low-income seniors in Warrick County. Ifyou know someone who might bene-fit, please have them call Colleen Mar-tin, 812-598-8332.We are going to be collecting items

for a variety of causes this year, asmentioned earlier in this newsletter.

These opportunities are open to thepublic and we encourage everyone toget involved. They don't have to bethe end of the chain, either.
