News Forest Road , Coalville, Leicestershire, LE67 3SJ | 01530 831561 | [email protected] | www.newbridgehs.leics.sch.uk Editor: Mr Goacher Volume 12.01 05 September 2014 It’s that me of year when you can almost hear that collecve sigh of relief from parents up and down the land as the school holidays come to an end! As for the children, when I ask them “are you glad to be back?”, the answer has been a resounding “YES!” Holidays are all very well, but young minds need to be smulated alongside other acve brains. Newbridge students seem to enjoy school! The building looks fresh and clean for the new year. Our main office has had a faceliſt. We have created a brand new computer room in the Performing Arts area with Apple Mac computers to support the introducon of Media. With this, ipads in the library and numerous PC’s around the school, we are forging ahead with providing the IT our students need for the future. We have a more varied and excing curriculum for the new year. As well as the introducon of Media within Performing Arts, we are also teaching Dance. Within Modern Languages we are introducing Spanish. We have increased the amount of Food Technology on the curriculum and reduced group sizes in ADT. Our Year 9’s are taking a new modular course on a Friday aſternoon in which they can choose a wide range of new experiences: photography, gardening, jewellery making, strategy and taccs, and many, many more opons. All these improvements will provide the opportunies for our children to achieve success in their journey through school. Meanwhile our tutors and pastoral managers work relessly to ensure our students are supported and that we do our best to remove any barriers to learning that may arise. It’s hardly surprising our students and staff have a spring in their step. The new school year? Can’t wait! Mr Goacher Welcome to the new school year!

Welcome to the new school year!
Attendance figures up on last year What To Do If …………..
There are problems
Hopefully, you feel our new students are settling in
well, but remember, if there’s any problems contact
your child’s Tutor, or your child’s Pastoral Manager:
Lost Property
If any clothing or property is lost/left anywhere,
encourage your child to go to the Site Team’s Office, (based in the Pavilion), as this is where all found belongings go. Mr Paul
Osborne and Ms Tina Smith, our Premises Officers, will do their best to recover items.
First Aid
If your child hurts themselves or is feeling sick, they should report to one of our First Aiders. They are:
Your child is too ill to come to school
Telephone school as soon as possible and give or leave a message:
child’s name and form,
reason, and
expected date of return.
Your child is late
They should report to the Office and sign in the Late Book (or they won’t get registered, and you might get a call
or text message asking where they are).
Your child has to leave early
For such as dentist appointments, they should go to the Office, sign out in the Signing Out Book and wait in Reception if
someone is collecting them. (A phone call or note in the planner is useful to confirm their need to leave school.)
Your child has a school lunch
Students will need to put money onto their Cashless Accounts regularly to ensure they can buy drinks or food
from our Diner.

Home to school Transport from September 2015 You may have heard that Leicestershire County council are planning some changes to eligibility for home to school transport from September 2015. However this will not affect our students. Buses will continue to be provided from Thringstone, and there will be no changes to the arrangements.
Our Development Plan Goals
Journey to success
Every Newbridge student will progress on a
journey to personal, social and academic success.
Overcoming barriers
Every Newbridge student will thrive in a
supportive community
Aim High, Achieve More
Education matters! It makes a massive difference to
the future happiness and well- being of your child. To
be successful as learners our students need to learn
the skills of working independently. This is really
important for good GCSEs and beyond. Homework is
one way in which your child can practise their
independent learning skills.
As parents you can really help and the start of the
school year is a good time to establish some good
routines.
Encourage your child to do their homework as soon as it is set
Encourage your child to be independent, only helping if they are really stuck
Provide a quiet space for them to work without TV, computer games or other distractions
Sign your child’s planner weekly and tick off homework when it is done
We will be emphasising the importance of homework
with the children this week. To support those who
prefer to work in school, access IT facilities and
receive support from school staff we will be running
an after school homework club every Monday,
Tuesday and Wednesday from 3.15 – 4.15. Students
who fail to complete homework will be expected to
attend a homework detention that takes place from
3.15 – 4.15 every Friday.
By working together on this issue we can make a real
difference to the progress your child makes at school.

School policies
All school policies are reviewed and renewed regularly. If any parents /carers are interested in being directly involved please call or e-mail school [email protected] FAO Mrs Warren. Key policies going through this year are:
At Newbridge we believe that everyone should learn in every lesson. We reward hard work, a positive
attitude, resilience and good behaviour with house points, praise, rewards, recognition and the book of
excellence.
If students disturb the learning, bully or break our rules we have a clear and well understood system for
helping students to be self-disciplined and make the right choices.
See below for our clear, well known rules.
If a student breaks a rule they get a “stage” or a “Blue slip” so that they can get back on track.
A “Stage 3” means the student is “removed” from the class so there are no more
disturbances for others.
In the “Remove” room students have to reflect and a sticker is put into their
Planner to inform parents.
If students get more than one Remove in one week they will have to serve an
after-school detention, school will phone home to make arrangements.
During the after school detention, students are given the opportunity to complete
coursework and homework, catching up on work missed following the Remove.
If students get too many “Removes” e.g. three Removes in a six week period,
parents will be contacted so that home and school can work together to get
students re-focused to learn and achieve.
Mrs Warren
Good behaviour at Newbridge
Co-operate by following instructions and working together
Listen in silence to anyone addressing the class
Effort – try my hardest to work and learn
Arrive on time and equipped to learn
Respect others’ rights to teach and learn
Starting the new year with great
behaviour for learning The year has begun again with students being rewarded for the type of behaviour that helps them to be happy and successful at school. Students earn house points by doing the things that we know help them learn and achieve e.g.
A point for attending school every day and being on time to all lessons all week
A point for high quality work and/or progress
A point for attending extra -curricular activities such as football training
A point for being well equipped and another for having PE kit for both lessons each week
A point for extra hard work on homework or class-work
A point for being particularly helpful to others Every 6 weeks the points are totalled and rewards presented to groups of students:
A gift for the students with the most points in the tutor group
An early lunch for the winning tutor group in each year group
A non-uniform day for the winning House
An end of year trip for the winning House. Our Houses connect with the heritage of our local area.
