This year, you will be working alongside over 150 staff and close to 700 students. We operate as a larger school with a smaller school within us, known as the Newark Education Center. There is a focus on the whole student and their academic, emotional, social and behavioral development. As a result, regular goal setting and progress monitoring is carried out. Students feel the warm, caring relationships between members of the school community. Staff acts not only as teachers but also as counselors, advisors, and mentors. There are high, but flexible expectations for students. The numbers in each program are small to foster a sense of community, and to enable personal interaction between staff/students. We strive to give students some degree of freedom from standard district and mainstream school operating procedures. Staff and often students participate in the management and

decision-making. It is important that these students continue to experience opportunities to deepen their connection with the overall school community, this is done by providing links between the school and the student's future life. As needed, counseling is integrated into the normal operations of the Alternative School. Each program affords teachers flexibility in design strategies and methods that will work with their students. Specific strategies include individual learning, cooperative learning, team teaching, peer tutoring, remediation and teaching to multiple intelligences. Curriculum varies from a focus on content to basic skills to working on personal development and behavior. At Newark High School, we have two programs within our Alternative School at the top of our pyramid of interventions, at the tier III level. One program functions as a program for students in or nearing a downward trajectory. Work completion is often possible, but is a secondary focus. We attempt to stabilize these students, who typically carry significant stressors and risk factors to school with them each day. Additionally, this program is an alternative to suspension for our IEP students. The second program caters to students that experience a regular ebb and flow to their ability to access teaching and learning. The following are the distinct student profiles present in each program: Student profile A-academically and/or behaviorally in the red zone (not ready/unable to access instruction): (1) Who-NMS placements and NHS placements (2) When-8:24-1:42 pm (3) Location: 139/141 (4) Placement-per NHS admin. (5) Duration-per goal setting/progress monitoring via SRT (6) Objective-grade repair/credit recovery. Replicate classroom based instruction without actually being in the classroom. Student profile B-academically and behaviorally in the yellow or green zone (ready/able or approaching ready/able to access instruction): (1) Who-NHS students (2) When-8:24-1:42 pm (3) Location 139/141 (4) Placement-per SRT (5) Duration-per goal setting/progress monitoring via SRT (6) Objective-insulate the student from reaching the red zone by mitigating the variables suggesting potential credit loss. Maximize access to classroom-based instruction without actually being in the classroom. Student profile C-level II-III code of conduct infractions: (1) Who-NHS students (2) When-8:24-1:42 pm (3) Location 139/141 (4) Placement-per NHS admin. (5) Duration-per code of conduct (6) Objective-stay on track to meet classroom based objectives. Student profile D-IEP suspension: (1) Who-NHS/NMS students (2) When-TBD (3) Location 139/141 (4) Placement-per NHS admin. (5) Duration-per NHS admin. (6) Objective-meet IEP The Alternative Education Program has a distinct focus on academic ends and is staffed with content specialists, a special education teacher, counselor, and support staff. It should be noted that all teacher of record rules apply, so in any Alternative School program it is the teacher responsible for attendance that provides all student work. Announcements: There are several venues through which to communicate school business. Examples include The Reds Tale (published weekly), the television and video production studio, e-mail and the public address system. -Staff should refrain from using their school e-mail to communicate items not relevant to school business (i.e. for sale items and March Madness brackets). -The public address system is typically used daily from 2:25-2:29 pm. Main office clerical manage these announcements.

-The Reds Tale is finished on Wednesday's and distributed by Thursday. All are welcome to submit an announcement. -Our all staff e-mail is [email protected]. -Television announcements should be sent to [email protected]. APPR: The overarching goal of the teacher evaluation system is to promote student learning and improve teaching and professional practice. The APPR encourages professional growth and development through a process that is based on current research on best practices and aligned with New York State’s Teaching Standards. It assures a common language, and common expectations among all teachers and evaluators. It is intentionally linked with the district’s Professional Development Plan to ensure teacher-driven professional development and support. -This document is negotiated annually, as a result be sure to confirm the copy you access is current. •Link(s): http://www.newarkcsd.org/Domain/503 Attendance (Staff): Each staff contract defines vacation, personal, sick time etc. differently. As a result, review your contract for relevant details. -In the event of a sudden departure from your school assignment, please seek to connect directly with a main office administrator to be cleared of your remaining duties. -A main office administrator, on a case by case basis, is able to grant prior approval for expected irregular absences (e.g., late arrival, early departure, temporary departure). When granted permission to adjust a work day the staff member must sign out and note PP for "principal permission." -NTA members, in consultation with the principal, are expected to exercise their incremental (one hour blocks) time off request option as appropriate. -Staff cannot assume that a conversation with a member of the clerical team is adequate communication regarding a tardy or absence issue. Teachers (NTA) should have a direct conversation with a principal and teacher assistants/monitors (NPA) with an assistant principal. •Link(s): http://www.newarkcsd.org/page/462 and https://aesoponline.com/login2.asp Attendance (Student): Board Policy/superintendents regulations guide building procedures. As a result, there are several documents relevant to this topic. The document pertinent to day to day operations is included in the student handbook located on the high school webpage under "Student Tools" •Link(s): http://www.newarkcsd.org/Page/381 Attendance Taking: It is the responsibility of each staff member with student assigned to them to take timely attendance at the beginning of each period.

-Staff are expected to reconcile attendance errors and to make changes regularly throughout the school day (i.e., check the attendance of students missing your class to determine if they attended the class before and/or after yours and address class cut as needed). -Expect daily contact from the attendance office in regards to absenteeism. Our attendance officer has been granted full access to staff during the school day as it is our belief that the first way to be sure of student safety is to have accurate attendance. As the principals designeee, you can treat requests from her (or her substitute) as a request directly from the principal. -Staff with student rosters should print them regularly in order to update sub plans and the Emergency Red Folder. -It is the obligation of the attendance taker to develop a tardy to class threshold and to address the behavior when the threshold is passed. -When students leave an assigned space, staff should expect students to check-back in to their classroom to ensure they were present per their pass. Auditorium Etiquette: Disruptive behavior in our auditorium can significantly impact the overall culture and climate of the building as it is customary for those being impacted by the bothersome behavior to wonder who should be addressing the behavior and why they are not addressing it. To that end, we will emphasize positive behavior and more thoroughly address negative behaviors. This begins with agreed upon norms for auditorium behavior supported by staff sitting with THEIR students in the auditorium. All staff in the auditorium have the authority to expect a student to remove themselves from the auditorium when unable to conduct themselves appropriately. Administrators will support the removal effort. Awards: The high school vision states that staff embody the school values and impart confidence while providing an inviting classroom environment with clear expectations and specific academic and behavioral goals. Awards are one such vehicle through which to impart confidence and to honor students that meet or exceed our goals. The most noteworthy awards ceremony is the Academic Awards Assembly in June, planned by the counseling office administrative assistant. This event requires a great deal of coordination between school and community stakeholders. -Other Newark High School honors include: Script N, Academic Excellence Dinner, Commencement Awards (graduation), Wall of Fame, National Honor Society Induction and individual club, activity and athletic honors such as Division I signings. •Link(s): http://www.newarkcsd.org/cms/module/selectsurvey/TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=215 Badge/ID: All staff are expected to where their ID badge at all times. This includes contract staff as well as all staff supervised by the NHS and NEC principals. Expect to be addressed when not displaying your ID and plan to adjust immediately.

Breakfast Program: We pride ourselves in our flexibility and virtual unconditional support when it comes to nourishing students. Students may enter the serving line at any time before 7:30 am to grab breakfast from a full menu of breakfast items. At 7:30 am, the serving line and dining area close and any student in the cafeteria must depart for class. Students are welcome to take their breakfast with them and must comply with teacher expectations for dining in the classroom. Students missing the initial serving period may sign up at the greeter desk to access a pre-set bagged breakfast. This breakfast will be delivered to the classroom between 8:05 and 8:20 am. Building Usage: In order to activate an appropriate response from building offices such as the maintenance and custodial offices it is important to request any non routine building usage using the approval process. This applies to all. Approval cannot be assumed given the demand placed on the facility and the cost associated with securing resources to support its usage. A main office administrative assistant manages the NHS facility usage process. -A building usage calendar is kept on the building web page. When completing request be specific on the details of the event in order to activate the highest quality of service prior to, during and after the event (i.e., if you will have food in the space, indicate this so the garbages can be emptied of food items that may spoil over night). -The principal has the final say on building usage. In the event of a double booking the event most connected to the building mission and vision will be approved. •Link(s): See Ms. George Cafeteria Supervision: A typical duty for staff is to supervise the cafeteria during the lunch block. Secondary dining spaces include room 258 and the space outside the cafeteria. Since our students have a tendency to view their time in the cafeteria as very loose, they unquestionably require regular behavioral supports and reminders to follow procedures. Be sure to: (1) Expect students to secure a hall pass when leaving the cafeteria for any reason. (2) Report on time and stay until the bell rings. (3) Identify one monitor who will secure a two-way radio for use in the space. A cashier typically holds the key to the closet at the entrance of the cafeteria where the radio is docked. (4) Identify two monitors to actively circulate through the space to correct student misbehavior and one monitor to manage sign outs and passes (5) Two minutes prior to the dismissal bell ringing, a pair of cafeteria supervisors should post up just outside the doors to stop students wishing to exit early. This is a challenging duty, but can be a positive experience when viewed as a relationship building exercise. Capstone: The Capstone graduation requirements is representative of a student’s successful embodiment of our mission and vision. Meeting our Capstone requirements will give Newark High School students the

opportunity to develop a range of skills and extend their learning beyond the classroom: (1) Public speaking (2) Research and writing (3) Reflection and critical analysis (4) Responsibility (5) Career exploration (6) Community awareness (7) Networking (8) Communication (9) Time management. -The class of 2017 was the first class to meet this graduation requirement. •Link(s): http://www.newarkcsd.org/Page/4699 Club and Activities: The full development of the mind, body and spirit of Newark students is not possible without an outlet beyond the classroom. As a result, students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular clubs and/or activities. -Staff are encouraged to support students aspirations to pursue their interests beyond the classroom by volunteering to coordinate a club or activity. Club and activity coordinator stipends are available on a limited basis. New clubs are formed only after the Board has had a chance to hear directly how the club is viable and student centered. Opportunities are typically offered through September. -In general, paid work associated with club and activity coordination occurs beyond the school day. -A signed Non Athletic Extracurricular Code is required for participation. -If a staff member wishes to start a club they should work with interested students to develop a proposal for submission to the principal. This is the first step in order to designate a club or activity as recognized or approved. Confidentiality: In order to provide the warmest environment and to cultivate the best relationship with students it is imperative that staff be trusted with highly sensitive information about students and their families. When provided such information it is assumed that staff will exercise the highest level of professional judgment and not disseminate the information in any manner other than the manner identified by the principal or his designee. -Staff should refrain from discussing grades, behavior etc. of specific students with their peers. -Staff should refrain from openly discussing a students gender (http://www.nysed.gov/Press/Transgender-and-Gender-Nonconforming-Students-Guidance-Document) that is not their chosen gender. -Student work should be recorded and stored in a manner that respects the privacy of its owner. -All matters revealed to staff that indicate a potential safety or security risk to the reporting student, peers and/or staff must be immediately revealed to an administrator, nurse, counselor and/or school psychologists. Staff should openly share their reporting obligations to students regularly throughout the school year. Doing so in a manner that maintains a safe and trusting relationship between the student and staff is encouraged.

Copying: Most staff copy or print in one of two ways. The first includes sending copy jobs to district office. The second is to use the building copier located nearest your classroom and office. -As a courtesy, a machine should not run when it may interrupt others in a mulit-use area such as the LGI. •Link(s): http://www.newarkcsd.org/cms/lib07/NY01000239/Centricity/domain/84/staff%20handbook/copy%20request-07072014083433.pdf Credit and Exam Requirements for Graduation: Diploma requirements are vastly different now, compared to when staff were graduating from high school. It is important to understand the required units of credit and examinations for a Regents diploma, a Regents diploma with advanced designation, or a local diploma. Regularly discussing diploma requirements with colleagues, parents and students (while avoiding inaccuracies) is critical when looking to share equally in our mission. -Understanding how your department and the course within it fit in the overall high school academic program is critical to student success, but also your success. -A great deal of thought should be put into the process of proposing elective courses, as their addition to the course catalog can impact other courses/departments. •Link(s): http://www.p12.nysed.gov/ciai/gradreq/intro.html Credit Recovery: The overarching objective of the NHS credit recovery program is to reduce the number of students not advancing in course work because they are too busy remediating. Recovery is an option for repeater students not appropriate to rejoin the regular classroom model of instruction, particularly if it mirrors the classroom model from the prior year. Affected courses include English 9 and 10, social studies 9 and Global History and Geography, Algebra I and Living Environment. The instructional delivery model in a credit recovery classroom is most successfull when it is developed after getting an advanced sense of student needs. No matter the delivery model, a sense of community and positive reinforcement strategies should be built early and often. Students should have maximimum direct contact with the classroom teacher. Independently driven/self directed work has not proven effective in the past as that is typically the deficit area leading the student to prior failure. The typical student profile will include some or all of the following: (1) Course failure (2) Failure/inability to remediate in summer school (3) Failure to master critical course standards due to willful behaviors (4) Regents failure (5) Willingness to engage in the credit recovery service while making progress in the next course in the sequence. (6) The need to lighten the second semester load to capture a .5 credit in another course. At close out in June of each year, teachers of the above-mentioned courses will develop a folder for students failing their course and/or Regents. The items added to each folder (do not need to be new items), when completed to a satisfactory level, will represent evidence of course completion. The items assembled are at the sole discretion of the close out teacher and could be assessments, projects, activities, etc. Answer keys/scoring rubrics for the aforementioned items will need to be included in each folder. A certified

teacher in the content area will provide student specific remediation the following year in a credit recovery class and will evaluate all work completed. A sliding scale will be developed for the credit recovery teacher so that a score can be provided to the counseling office upon recovery of the credit. The scale for the final credit will likely look like this: 88-100=75%, 75-87=70% and 65-86=65%. Prior to full recovery of the credit, the student will be managed like an AIS student for the purposes of mark reporting, which is to say they will receive a comment only and not a score (S-satisfactory or U-unsatisfactory). Like any intervention service, the student can be exited if a compelling reason is provided to do so. Additionally, once the student recovers the credit they may remain in the credit recovery section with a new goal that can be reached with content specific supports from the credit recovery specialist. SRT will convene each summer to finalize placements after summer school has closed. Additionally, options are available for credit recovery that go beyond the aforementioned, and require the following per NYSED, "In the case of a school district or registered nonpublic school, the student's participation in the make-up credit program shall be approved by a school-based panel consisting of, at a minimum, the principal, a teacher in the subject area for which the student must make up credit, and a guidance director or other administrator." Crisis Management: In the event of a crisis the main office and the director of counseling will collaborate on a course of action. The first action is always to confirm the accuracy of the informatoin prompting the building response. Some other factors that will heavily influence the crisis response include: (1) Student, staff, parent etc.? (2) Details of the event that triggered the crisis. (3) Local agency involvement. Custodial and Maintenance: Mr. Mike Steve is our Director of Buildings and Grounds and supervises all the maintenance, cleaning and custodial work that occurs in the building. -It is the responsibility of Mr. Steve to deploy his team per building priorities. As a result, communicating maintenance/cleaning needs via the HelpDesk desktop app is important. Additionally, cleaning tasks that may have arisen unexpectedly or were missed and can impact instruction should go directly to Mr. BJ Forjone or his designee. Discretion should be used in what is passed along to the cleaning team without prior notice to Mr. Steve as time spent reacting to specific staff needs can take away from routine cleaning. Drop/Add: There are various options available for the awarding of credit to New York State high school students outlined by NYSED. As a general rule, the building principal is the Commissioner of Education's designee charged with managing course credit. In the event a student is interested in dropping/adding a class, the counseling office has the discretion to do so within the two to three week window after the student has started the class. Otherwise, dropping/adding classes is a thoroughly (start to finish) collaborative function that includes the main office, teacher, student, parent/guardian and counseling office coupled with tiered interventions. Key indicators that collaboration is occurring include but are not limited to data collection and analysis, face to face meetings and group discussions regarding the effectiveness of a

variety of interventions. During the 2019-2020 school year the collaborative process is scheduled to end on Friday, September 27, 2019 for year long and first semester courses and on Friday, February 14, 2020 for second semester courses. Duties: See the teacher contract. •Links(s): http://www.newarkcsd.org/page/462 Emergency Plans and Procedures: See your Emergency Red Folder or ERF. •Link(s): https://www.newarkcsd.org/cms/module/selectsurvey/TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=221 Field Trips: Field trips are encouraged assuming that budget, supervisory and time constraints allow for the planning and scheduling of the trip. When allocating funds towards a field trip one must always consider the overall impact of each individual absence on the academic program of each student. As a result, trip dates and students attending should be proposed through supervisory channels to open dialogue relevant to scheduling the trip. Field trip requests need to be submitted 30 days before the date of one day trips and 60 days before the date of overnight trips. Every trip must have the minimum number of chaperones (ONE DAY TRIPS: K-5, 1 staff member to 25 students; 6-12, 1 staff member to 30 students; ) (OVERNIGHT TRIPS: number of chaperones must be higher than one day trips; will be determined by the administrator); advisers are able to use more. The Administrator can waive the chaperone requirement depending on the circumstances of the trip. Chaperones must be Newark CSD employees. Non-Newark CSD employees must be on the district Approved Volunteer List in order to attend. Principal approval is required. New to the process is the addition of the trip to the school calendar. Communicate this information to any main office clerical per the approval form immediately upon getting notice the trip can be supported. -As a general rule assume field trips (this includes in house activities) will end at the close of school on the Friday of the first full week in May. •Links(s): https://www.newarkcsd.org/cms/module/selectsurvey/TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=345 https://www.newarkcsd.org/cms/lib/NY01000239/Centricity/Domain/512/High%20School%20Field%20Trip%20Checklist.pdf https://www.newarkcsd.org//cms/module/selectsurvey/TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=301 Fire/Electric Code: Classrooms and offices must meet NYSED standards. This approach established a Freshman Team of teachers and counselors within the school as a smaller educational unit with some separate educational initiatives/programming. Because this model most closely replicates a small school, it is most likely to produce the positive effects of a small-scale educational organization. This model contributes to increased student well-being, sense of community, student achievement, and educational attainment. On an annual basis, freshman teachers and counselors should expect to engage in norming activities around tier I interventions under the supervision of a principal/teacher leader. Additionally, freshman teaming compels teacher to be actively involved with freshman outside the classroom. This level of engagement is strongly encouraged and appreciated. Fundraising: School based fundraising is encouraged when done so under the supervision of a district staff member and under the conditions set forth by the district coordinator of fundraising. -Please contact Chris Corey ([email protected]) to facilitate the streamlining of the fundraising process in order to reduce duplication, eliminate multiple fundraisers happening at once, and to maximize the efforts of our school and community to help our students. Fundraising that generates funds not immediately destined for a properly vetted extra classroom account is not typically allowable. •Link(s): http://www.newarkcsd.org/Domain/68 Gemini: Students can earn college credit during their regular school day without ever leaving high school! Through FLCC’s Gemini program, high school students have the opportunity to complete FLCC courses tuition-free at their high school prior to graduation. The college credits earned will apply to an FLCC degree, or can transfer to another college or university. Students earn high school and college credit simultaneously. Qualified high school teachers are approved by FLCC to deliver the college course. Courses are tuition-free for students with a $5 per credit hour student fee. The student fee is waived for students who are eligible for free and reduced meals. Student's in the Gemini program, are considered an FLCC student. They get access to valuable services such as FLCC’s online library resources. •Link(s): http://www.flcc.edu/gemini/ Gender Neutral/Transgender: Newark High School adheres to the guidelines developed by NYSED regarding transgender and gender nonconforming students. This occurs in many ways and is not limited to student access to gender

neutral bathrooms throughout the building. While gender neutral bathrooms convey that all are welcome, appropirate norms for students in individual stalls remains at one student per stall. •Link(s): http://www.p12.nysed.gov/dignityact/documents/Transg_GNCGuidanceFINAL.pdf Grading: Students in a full year course must earn a passing average using the four quarter averages, the mid-term exam, and the final exam in order to receive credit for the course. The breakdown for final course grade calculation for full year courses is as follows: (1) 20% per marking period totaling 80% (2) Mid-term examination totaling 5% (3) Final examination totaling 15%. It should be noted that each marking period carries equal weight in terms of the final grade. Students in semester courses must earn a passing average using the two quarter averages and final exam in order to receive credit for the course. The breakdown for final course grade calculation for semester or half year courses is as follows: (1) 40% per marking period totaling 80% (2) Final examination totaling 20%. Once again, it should be noted that each marking period carries equal weight in terms of the final grade. Teachers may grant course credit when a student fails a course, but passess a comprehensive summative examination (Regents or locally developed). On a case by case basis it may be necessary for the principal to collaborate with the teacher and/or counselor to determine whether to grant course credit when the condition of a passing summative examination and failing course grade are present. -Teachers are discouraged from developing zero tolerance and/or negative reinforcement approaches to classroom expectations (e.g., homework). Instead, positive reinforcement such as praise and privileges are encouraged. -Students should always be encouraged to complete work no matter the deadline, when it is placed along the practice and formative assessment continuum. This work should be recorded as exempt or missing instead of with a zero. Teachers should follow our SchoolTool Gradbook Expectation to ensure compliance in this area and related areas. -Students earning a quarter grade of fewer than 50% points in any quarter during the first semester should receive a grade increase to 50%. In the absence of a grade increase, the teacher should submit a "Grade Repair Plan" that details what the student needs to do in order to improve the poor quarter grade to passing should they choose to reconnect to their studies. Grade Repair Plans should be submitted with grades at each mark reporting deadline. -Increasing a grade to 50% (also knows as a circle 50) keeps our highly at risk population connected to their studies well into the fourth quarter, despite significantly poor first semester progress. -Increasing a 63% or 64% to a 65% is an agreed upon best practice as it eliminates the concern that a grading or book-keepign issue has prevented a student from passing. -A Grade Change Authorizatoin Form needs to be completed when changing a quaterly or final grade. These forms are located under "Staff Tools" and in the counseling office. Guided Study hall: A guided study hall is similar to a study hall in name only. Students placed in a guided study hall require significant supports in acquiring the necessary skills to be self starters and to work independently. As a result, staff assigned to the space work closely with students on the roster to ensure they are making

regular gains. With only a few exceptions, students in a guided study hall should remain in the study hall as opposed to leaving via a pre-signed pass. Hall Monitors: We are lucky to have a team of hall monitors assigned to designated locations in the building. Assuming they are able to divert their attention away from maintaining safety and security in their areas they are able to assist you in transitioning students through the building or performing helpful tasks (e.g. delivering work to in school suspension) that keep us all focused on teaching and learning. Teaching staff are encouraged to look for moments to support monitor efforts as often times partnerships in redirecting student behavior bear more fruit among challenging, but impressionable teens. -Donice Mulberry works predominantly with seniors and is located in the senior hall/lounge area. Hall Passes: See student handbook. -For the purposes of this section assume that a pass is a school issued pass, a teacher generated pass or a planner pass. Small totems are not recognized as passes since they rarely contain specific information such as time and date. -Staff are expected to supply any student wishing to leave their assigned location a pass and should confirm their whereabout while out on a pass. -Staff are required to set strong limits on classroom departures (one student out at a time, no visitts to cafeteria, and essential business only). -Staff must check that students out of the classroom with a pass are going from A to B only in a timely manner. -As a professional courtesy, pre-signed passes should be supplied to students making appointments. The teacher that makes the appointment is responsible for supplying the pass. -Hall monitors have been directed to detain students without passes and to send them to their assigned location and not their desired location. Please note that the absence of a hall pass can lead to difficult and sometimes hostile exchanges between well meaning monitors and students. -When a hall monitor alerts you to suspected pass misuse please confirm or deny it as this information is tracked on a student by student basis and informs interventions. -Study hall students must report to their study hall before reporting to another location. Seniors with privileges are the exception. -Cafeteria monitors are responsible for ensuring students leaving the cafeteria have a pass. -All staff should keep a room sign-out sheet that compliments the information on a hall pass. •Link(s): http://www.newarkcsd.org/domain/183 Health Services: The Newark Central School District offers important health care services for every student. To take full advantage of these services, you should contact our health services professionals in the health office. Ms. Rothpearl possesses licensure to be an R.N. and Ms. Monahan an L.P.N. In the event a nurse is not available a principal acts as their designee.

-In the event a student or staff member falls ill or experiences and injury, no matter how serious, it is critical to seek care on their behalf from our health office. -Be careful second guessing students requesting care, as it can lead you to be vulnerable to scrutiny from parents/guardians and health care professionals. HelpDesk HelpDesk is the desktop app through which ALL maintenance/cleaning and tech. requests must funnel. Please avoid making these requests via the clerical team. Homeroom: Homeroom is the time period during which we are all expected to tune in to the televised announcements found on channel 68. Occasionally, homeroom teachers are asked to engage in some outreach associated with student health, wellness and safety. -Homeroom should mirror your class expectations and students are not to be dismissed prior to the end of this period at 8:20 am. -If announcements run long, students should be held until they are completed. Independent Study: Independent study courses are only offered after careful analysis of the program the course is associated with and when all avenues to take the course through traditional means are exhausted. Independent study courses require principal approval prior to being offered. Interim Assessment: Our quarterly assessment or 10 week assessment routine is being repurposed as: Interim A, Mid-term and Interim B. Courses required to administer these three common assessments include courses ending in a Regents and courses that build to a Regents (Social Studies 9 and English 9-10). Other courses may forego these assessments or may operate outside the parameters of the Interim Assessment schedule established by the assistant principal. We are a school focused on instructional planning that fills gaps revealed per regulary assessments. Teachers are expected to develop and administer their Interim assessment based on the building best practices in assessment design noted on the Assessment Quality Analysis Rubric. -These assessments are typically the subject of close scrutiny per the building Assessment Data Analysis Protocol and the building improvement plan. As a result, they should remain secure with the teacher until such time they have been analyzed. -Interim assessments are noted in the SchoolTool grade book according to a specified nomenclature. Be sure to follow the naming scheme designate for each assessment.

The building principal signs off on all key requests. -A key FOB is an electronic device or badge that interfaces with a sensor mounted outside of the main entrance and south entrance. Seniors with priviliges are provided FOB's that log their arrival and dismissal, but do not open a door. As a result, we attempt to maintain property as long as it is physically appropriate to do so. Most property with little or modest value is typically located in a bin in room 258. Other property can be found in any of the offices our students frequent (e.g., athletic office, main office, counseling office). -We work to avoid donating lost clothing to Reds Threads. -If you recover property in or near your classroom you are encouraged to seek to find its owner for a time period prior to moving the property to our general lost and found or to an office. -In the event money is found, every attempt is made to find its owner. However, most of the time the student that found the money receives it after a time period designated by the principal. -If the money is not claimed, it is donated to a school/community based service organization such as Interact Club or the Alex Eligh Community Center. Main Office Clerical: We have two administrative assistants assigned to supporting the main office. They are Ms. George (Ms. Ross and Mr. Dentel) and Ms. Mateo (Mr. Roote). Mr. Roote's administrative assistant manages key and maintenance requests, payroll, staff attendance, budget, and extra-classroom accounts. Ms. George manages driving and parking and building usage. Other clerical in the building located in the counseling and attendance offices manage functions such as suspensions, tutoring, transcripts, attendance, enrollment etc. -Our clerical staff are required to meet daily deadlines associated with systems upkeep throughout the building. As a result, they do not have the ability to disconnect from their regular duties to perform

teacher specific tasks such as: (1) Copying sub plans (2) Processing copy requests (3) Finding coverage when being cleared by the principal for a temporary absence. Mailbox Mailboxes are located in the main office. Supervisors are at the left of the bank of slots, coaches towards the top and the rest are arranged alphabetically. -Please check your mail slot daily in the AM and PM. -A mailbox is treated as confidential space assigned to the user only. -If you have a need to move your mail slot you are able to do so by talking with a main office secretary. Whenever possible, these requests are honored. -Mailboxes are closely monitored by our digital security system so privacy violations are easily deterred. Mark Reporting/Interim Reporting: Mark reporting is an important time of year driven by strict deadlines and system requirements of SchoolTool. As a result, it is important that all staff adhere to several guidelines. -Mark reporting: (1) Score and percent columns must match (2) Posting grades from the SchoolTool is done under the direction of the counseling office. (3) Save, save and save! Remember to save after each class or navigating between sections when entering grades (4) Every student must have a grade (5) No grades over 100 in percent or score column (6) AIS/Resource/Learning Center must have a S or U for all students in every section (7) Some courses are pass/fail so be sure to know the status of your course (8) All grades must be complete before the respective deadline (ten school days for incompletes). -Interim reporting: (1) Save, save and save! (2) All courses and sections must be given a comment, including AIS, Learning Center, and Resource (3) Remember to put in the PR in and fill all-then save, save and save each section (4) There should not be numerical grades for this grading window (5) All comments must be complete before the respective deadline Non-athletic Extracurricular Regulations: Non-athletic extracurricular activities at Newark High School include but are not limited to the fall drama, spring musical, student council, National Honor Society, Interact club, Youth to Youth, Masterminds etc. As we put our eyes on college and career readiness and the Capstone graduation requirement, we encourage participation in one or more of these activities. In advance of it, we appreciate your support reinforcing the essential school practices that are covered in these regulations. Once these regulations are signed, they are in effect until graduation. A missing signature does not mean the student is not accountable to our regulations. Our expectations demand that our students are responsible, respectful, trustworthy and safe. Students need to make commitments, which imply sacrifices and dedication to an active lifestyle in mind, body and spirit. As a result, these regulations apply to not only alcohol, tobacco and other drugs but also to conduct that could be perceived as detrimental to the school mission, vision and values. These behaviors include, but are not limited to illegally absent/tardy, fighting, significant academic failure, failure to cooperate with academic interventions, failure to meet major graduation requirements etc. Significant findings in health research

have pointed out the undesirability of using tobacco, alcohol, marijuana and other controlled substances, especially at the teenage level. We endorse these findings. Unfortunately, education and reasoning alone are not always sufficient to deter improper behavior or use of tobacco, alcohol, marijuana and other controlled substances; therefore, Newark High School must require its students who are involved in activities to follow certain rules and regulations. As parents, you can assure a more positive experience for your child by helping him/her understand and comply with the regulations in this document. These regulations apply to situations that happen both on and off school grounds. No student shall be in possession of a controlled substance. No student shall be under the influence of a controlled substance. Controlled substances include but are not limited to alcohol, and/or tobacco products, inhalants or any drug paraphernalia, except by prescription. Students must not attend any social functions where alcohol or tobacco is being used by minors or where controlled substances are being used unlawfully by anyone. The student must leave the site immediately upon the knowledge of alcohol or tobacco use by minors (persons under the age of 21) or unlawful use of controlled substances by anyone. Parents, by law, must not host or participate in any social functions where minors are using controlled substances. This includes any functions held at a property when the owner is not present. The implementation of any discipline for a violation will be administered immediately after rendering judgment following an investigation. All reported incidents would be investigated by the building administration. First offense: (1) Self-report*, mandatory counseling-no penalty. (2) No self-report-penalty, three hours of school/community service. Second offense: (1) Penalty-limited participation (per the administrator and activity supervisor) and six hours of school/community service. Additional occurrences will warrant more severe consequences (e.g., permanent removal from activity). In the event of a self-report, the participant must make immediate contact to detail their real or perceived infraction. The self-report must be directed to the supervisor and principal in an e-mail, phone call, meeting etc. prior to the close of the first full day of school after the infraction. -Supervisors must keep the building administration abreast of their rosters and their efforts to educate participants to the tenets detailed above. For activities that meet regularly a weekly roster should be submitted to the main office. For activities that meet infrequently or irregularly a roster should be submitted to the main office after each meeting/activity. Outdoor/Alternative Dining: Dining in our busy cafeteria can be a challenge for our students. As a result, students willing to follow our agreed upon protocols are able to access dining with teachers, in room 258 and outside the cafeteria. Dining outside the cafeteria is only allowable when we can adequately keep the building safe and secure as students move in and out. This starts with staff being stationed at the door to open and close it for students. The door may not be propped. Staff that offer their room as an alternative dining location must expect a timely arrival and must hold their students until the bell. Parent Conferences: We are an RtI/MTSS driven school (response to intervention) and as a result parent conferences are an important step on our pyramid of supports. All staff are encouraged to initiate a parent conference as a proactive measure to honor work being done and as a reactive measure to change the trajectory of a student.

-Ms. Verbridge is on standby to schedule these conferences when the assistance of a team of teachers, counselor, service provider and/or administrator is appropriate. -Parent conferences can be an emotional experience for all involved. It is critical that an end time get established upon opening the conference. Additionally, some ground rules associated with conduct and format should be presented along with the name of the meeting facilitator. -Never respond to hostile or aggressive behaviors with similar behaviors. Simply respectfully ask the facilitator to provide you with an opportunity to exit the meeting. -A good design for conferences is to start with some complimentary remarks, then identify the desired behaviors and close with recommended actions and supports to maximize the occurrence of desired behavior's. Closing with words of encouragement and optimism is almost always well received. Progress Monitoring As a result of our tiered system of supports for students, progress monitoring/academic support occurs via the main office, counseling office and learning center. Staff are required to respond to requests for student progress/academic support within forty eight hours of the request. This practice maintains the fidelity of our interventions (ISS, alt. school, home tutoring etc.). Quiet Dining Space: A quieter dining space in the building is in room 258. Students can go to the space for peace and quiet, a time-out, help, advice, or just to talk to someone in confidence during their lunch. The Reds Tale: A weekly publication (usually distributed Wednesday nights) from the main office designed to replace the regular production of memos (e-mail etc.) and mass e-mails. The "Mash Up" and "Calendar Share" sections of the publication include timely information related to operationalizing our work. Other sections are designed to motivate and inspire. Most staff that regularly consume information in The Reds Tale identify it as their main source of critical information (deadlines etc.) from the main office. Reds Threads: A self service thrift rack (clothing) created by former student Cheyenne Yatteau that is open to all students. The "rack" is located in an alcove near the office of instructional coaches. Safe Reds Zone or Safe Place/Space: A “Safe Reds Zone” is subtly different than a "Safe Space" or "Safe Place". The key idea of a Safe Reds Zone is a place in the building frequented by staff that have shown an ability to provide empathy, acceptance, support and resources for students. Students will know where each Safe Reds Zone is by the

Page 21: Newark High School Staff Handbook 2019-2020 · 2019-08-21 · Newark High School Staff Handbook 2019-2020 Last Update: 8-8-19 Foreword: Dear Staff Member, Welcome or welcome back

symbol posted above the door of the space. Students at or nearing crisis mode can go to the space for an infrequent time-out, help, advice, or just to talk to someone in confidence that will be supportive and accepting. The counseling office is the appropriate space for ongoing efforts to meet the dynamic needs of students distracted by social/emotional challenges. Therefore, each Safe Reds Zone is treated as a temporary location to address student needs until a counselor can be accessed. A Safe Space or Safe Place is a location routinely identified by a student as a preferred location to an assigned location. Examples of the needs of students accessing these spaces include routine avoidance, frustration, anxiety, fear, anger or some combination of the preceding. All instances of students accessing a Safe Place regularly (two or more times in a week for consecutive weeks) require attendance office, counselor and principal/assistant principal oversight. Therefore, when student Safe Place access becomes routine, the staff that track the student attendance are given an opportunity to consider the value of the Safe Place vs the assigned space. When a Safe Place is an acceptable alternative to an assigned space it is up to the staff responsible for the Safe Space and the staff responsible for keeping attendance of the student to communicate up to three times a class period. This would include an on-time check, check-in and check-out. Additionally, the student and staff associated with the Safe Space must have an advanced understanding and commitment to our hall pass system as this system informs our safety and security protocols that account for students. Schedules: In the event of an early release or school delay every effort will be made to develop a class schedule that maximizes and equitably distributes instructional time given the overall academic pogram. These schedules will be released as soon as possible, but will be developed on an ongoing basis in order to continuously account for program needs through the year. Senior Privileges: The Newark High School Senior Privilege Program honors the effort made by our upperclassmen to follow a personally established code of ethics that is consistent with the high school mission, vision and values. Students regularly embodying these tenets are more likely to experience life-long success and as a result, are honored with the Senior Privilege Program. -A senior with privileges may: (1) Utilize the Fox Den and senior hall when not assigned to a class where their attendance is taken. (2) Leave school grounds when not assigned to a class where attendance is taken. -Seniors receive privileges at only four points in the school year. -The principal reserves the right to revoke privileges at his discretion for chronic/extreme behavioral incidents and when students fail to reach critical academic checkpoints in the school year, e.g. incompletes, English 12 paper, Capstone and PIG hours. -Students wishing to appeal their loss of privileges may do so electronically (see NHS homepage). Appeals are only reconciled at the five week mark of each quarter. -Donice Mulberry, located in the senior lounge hall is a great contact regarding senior privileges. -Teachers must not extend privileges beyond what is noted in the guidance documents. -Teachers should communicate to the main office each time an incomplete is reversed leading a senior to gain their privileges back.

The hall pass procedures should complement the sign-in and out procedures, one is not a replacement for the other. Staff Mailbox: Mailboxes are located in the main office. Stipends/Extra Pay: Stipends are offered on an annual basis for selected Board approved clubs, activities, service groups etc. The modest stipends are in place to honor the after hours effort made to work with students as they aspire to broaden their horizons and challenge themselves. Prior approval from an administrator is required to collect a stipend or to be eligible to submit a time sheet for extra pay. Student Management: Whenever possible teachers should seek to manage student behavior through positive reinforcement and relationship building activities. Nonetheless, while in a school bases setting teenagers frequently challenge school norms. Our norms or code of conduct is designed to guide you as seek to determine the seriousness of behaviors. If a behavior is a violation of our code of conduct and disruptive to the teaching and learning environment you are expected to produce a disciplinary referral. -Staff are expected to inform student when they receive a disciplinary referral and to contact parents. -Parent contact is important for contextualizing behaviors. Unfortunately, a positive outcome seldom results when students are afforded the freedom to explain their behaviors, absent of a staff perspective. -The main office team of administrators and counseling office team of counselors and psychologists are on standby all day every day to support your ongoing efforts to promote an environment conducive to teaching and learning.

-Teachers may never put their hands on students in order to promote compliance or to correct behavior. -Our more challenging students rarely respond well to sarcasm and flippant remarks. As a result, consider your audience and refrain from engaging in these behaviors as they are nearly impossible to defend. Student Support Services: One of the most obvious indicators of individual academic success at NHS is the presence of one or more services designed to wrap around our students. Services include the following, used alone or in concert with others. (1) Individual and/or group counseling/services (2) Prevention counseling/services (3) Home tutoring (4) Alternative school (5) Student referral team (SRT) (6) Individual support team (IST). -The aforementioned services are designed to supplement, never supplant, direct collaboration with an administrator and/or school counselor. -The most effective strategy for reaching disconnected youth is to express your concerns with their progress directly with a principal, counselor and psychologist. Regular home contacts complimenting the preceding are equally important. •Link(s): https://www.newarkcsd.org//cms/module/selectsurvey/TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=350 Study hall: Study halls are one of the most important venues within which our students can attend to their studies. As a result, study hall monitors must cultivate an environment conducive to quiet study. -When student leave a study hall they must have a pass and must sign out. -Students must report to their study hall before having a pass honored. Seniors with priviliges are the exception. -One of the most common "holes" in student supervision is associated with inconsistent expectations in study halls. For example, staff must expect students to return to study hall prior to the end of the class period so there whereabouts can be confirmed. Here is an example of how a student takes advantage of the system (1) Leaves study hall with a pass (2) Never arrives at location designated pass or visits multiple locations, most not on the pass (3) Student never returns to stud hall so that staff can confirm there whereabouts. Substitute Plans: In the event of an absence it is the responsibility of each teacher to have a plan in place that accounts for the skill set of a substitute teacher and the need to continue ahead with teaching and learning. -Office secretaries are not expected to prepare plans in any way. The role of the administrative assistant in the event of a teacher absence is to be sure that classroom coverage is in place and to ready the substitute to account for their students. -In the event assistance is required to execute a lesson plan, a departmental colleague should be accessed and not a secretary. -Substitute plans should be complete with rosters, ERF location and notes related to high needs students and important procedures.

-Very often high needs students struggle to function with substitutes, their counselor and administrator should be alerted whenever possible as a pro-active measure in anticipation of disruptions. Staff are expected to routinely access the IT Department Overview and related areas in order to understand their role, systems and protocols required when bringing technology to NHS. Pay particular attention to "Help Desk Ticket" expectations. •Link(s): https://www.newarkcsd.org/Page/475 Textbooks: Teachers are encouraged to keep abreast of the most effective trends in curriculum design and delivery. In many cases, a textbook that is well aligned to the critical learning objectives of the course is the best way to accomplish this. When a text becomes misaligned and/or outdated it can be disposed of in order to make space for current resources. The preceding is accomplished through the district office of curriculum and instruction. •Link(s):http://www.newarkcsd.org/cms/lib07/NY01000239/Centricity/domain/84/staff%20handbook/Text%20Book%20Disposition%20Form%20NCSD%202013-2014.pdf Transportation:

The building level transportation budget is built based on a per pupil allotment using BEDS day numbers. As a result, responsible decision making in how trips requiring transportation are approved includes looking at the teaching and learning associated with the trip request. In order to submit a transportation request understanding the web based system VersaTrans is required. Transportation costs change annually, as of this writing the hourly wage for drivers is $21.00 and the mileage cost is $2.00 per mile. Visitors : Visitors are welcome in to our building assuming they clear our vetting process. -Visitors must have an appointment with staff in order to see them during the regular school day. -The process for being pre-screened to enter the building is as simple as the receiving teacher alerting the greeter desk that they expect a visitor. Their name and business should be provided to the greeter desk. -Visitors must inform the greeter desk of all their stops in the building. -Visitors may not move freely around the building before or after reaching their scheduled location. It is the responsibility of all staff to confirm that all visitors have a name badge affixed to their clothing and were cleared by the greeter desk. -Consult the ERF for what to do in the event a visitor presents as an intruder. Volunteers: Volunteers are welcome in the building. -Volunteers must be cleared through our Work Experience Office. -Volunteers must adhere to the code of conduct
