Small: 690 wineries, 31,057 hectares of producing vineyards, 205 million litres of wine produced (2009).

Young: Modern industry began in 1973 with first Sauvignon Blanc vines in Marlborough.

Fast: Export sales up 500% in last decade to NZ$1.0 billion per annum.

Over 25 grape varieties planted in commercial quantity in NZ.

Key Facts and Figures

In New Zealand, grapes are grown in a wide variety of climates and soils, allowing the production of a diverse range of styles. There are 10 key wine growing regions and over 580 vineyards throughout New Zealand, of which the majority are small boutique, family-owned vineyards.

WINES...... So fine

NorthlandNew Zealand’s oldest and northernmost

wine region, Northland has warm, sub-

tropical growing conditions.

The boutique vineyards of this region

produce ripe, well-rounded whites – such

as Chardonnay – and substantial, savoury

Cabernet Merlot blends.

AucklandAlthough rich with winegrowing history,

Auckland mostly serves as an administrative

base for many of New Zealand’s largest

wine companies.

As well as its main ‘head-office’ role, the

region also grows quality wines – rich, ripe

Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon; and mouth

filling whites such as Chardonnay and Pinot

Gris.

Recent attention has been focused on

the acclaimed subregion of Waiheke

Island, as well as emerging subregions such

as Matakana.

Waikato/BayofPlentyThe warm temperate countryside of this

region produces a variety of flavoursome

wines.

Sprinkled across the warm, temperate

Waikato and Bay of Plenty countryside, a

small number of vineyards produce wines

such as Chardonnays and Cabernet

Sauvignons, that boast complex, ripe

flavours with moderate acidity.

GisborneThe world’s most easterly wine-growing

region, Gisborne is the first to see the sun

each day.

The warm, coastal Gisborne region is

renowned for its generous, highly

approachable wines – especially lush, softly

mouth filling Chardonnays.

Hawke’sBayNew Zealand’s leading producer of red

wines and second largest wine region in the

country, Hawke’s Bay has a long, rich heritage

of fine wine production.

Aided by a warm, maritime climate and

varying landscape, the region excels with

classic grapes such as Merlot, Cabernet

Sauvignon, Chardonnay and more recently,

Syrah.

Other Hawke’s Bay white wine styles include

weighty, oak aged Sauvignon Blanc with

ripe tropical fruit and gentle herbaceous

flavours; Gewurztraminer; Pinot Gris; Riesling;

Chenin Blanc; and Viognier.

Wairarapa(includingMartinborough)A small wine region with a big reputation.

Wairarapa combines the robustness of the

warmer North Island regions with the fresh,

aromatic intensity, typical of the cooler

southern zones.

The area is best known for its mouth filling,

richly flavoured Pinot Noirs – wines that have

placed Martinborough on the world wine

map.

NelsonThe picturesque valley vineyards of Nelson

benefit from a sunny maritime climate.

Nelson yields some of New Zealand’s most

freshly scented, intensely flavoured

Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling,

as well as vibrant, supple Pinot Noir.

MarlboroughNew Zealand’s largest wine region,

Marlborough is particularly famous for its

strikingly pungent Sauvignon Blanc.

Abundant sunshine and cool nights also

ensure vibrant complex flavours are

displayed in the region’s other white wines

as well as its Pinot Noir.

With 85% of the country’s Sauvignon Blanc

plantings, Marlborough is New Zealand’s

(some say the world’s) Sauvignon Blanc

capital.

Canterbury(includingWaipara)From the valleys to the plains, this region is

particularly distinguished for its Riesling and

Pinot Noir.

The Waipara Valley and Canterbury

Plains districts of this dry, southerly, cool

climate region are acclaimed primarily

for their scented, racy Rieslings and intensely

flavoured Pinot Noirs.

CentralOtagoThe dramatic mountain valley vineyards of

the world’s most southerly wine region have

excelled in recent years.

In particular, the vibrant, cherry-like spicy

flavour and velvety texture of Central Otago

Pinot Noir has gained a strong following.

5.1 Venture Hawke’s Bay

5.0 Hawke’s Bay

Hawke’s Bay Wine Country is a lifestyle second to none and sets the scene for visitors to explore award winning wines and fresh produce, from gourmet meats to a vast array of epicurean delights. The warm climate is conducive to all things living and has earned Hawke’s Bay the reputation as a leader in food and wine production.

No matter when you visit, there is always something ‘in season’. Spring heralds new asparagus, strawberries, lettuce and herbs. Summer kicks into life with sweetcorn, eggplant, berries, cherries and stone fruit. Autumn harvests apples, pears, avocados and olives while winter is the time for citrus fruit and hearty vegetables.

One thing remains the same – the wine, which can be enjoyed all year round. Although, there is nothing better than early autumn after harvest when the leaves change colour to create red and golden hues, or the splash of fresh green buds in the spring time throughout the region. The many cellar doors and winery restaurants throughout Hawke’s Bay offer the perfect opportunity to match local wines to food sensations created from fresh local produce.

All year round, food and wine trails lead direct to the door of dozens of local artisan and commercial producers, while traditional farmer’s markets every weekend let you chat to growers directly while enjoying an unbeatable gourmet experience. Local produce fresh from the orchard, market garden and farm gate is always a feature in Hawke’s Bay’s many award-winning restaurants.

Hawke’s Bay has an amazing capacity to celebrate and is brimming with different events to tie in with your visit throughout the year. Art Deco, food and wine are central themes and annual open air concerts, winery festivals and sporting events draw in the crowds.

There is a pillow with your name on it waiting in Wine Country. Relax in luxury retreats and romantic cottages tucked away along the coastline. Recharge in elegant country houses and hotels where metropolitan sophistication meets old fashioned provincial sincerity. Superior motels, urban apartments and self-contained houses offer families all the space they need, while camping grounds and holiday parks let kids and kids at heart escape from real life whatever the budget.

We look forward to welcoming you to Wine Country!

Your tour of the winery will include a visit to New Zealand‘s only wine museum where you will start to hear of the people, the passion and the pure

hard graft that today is so strongly reflected in the character of our place, our Cuve Room, Tom McDonald Cellar and our wines.

8.1 Destination Marlborough

8.0 Marlborough

Wine and food is a key attraction for visitors to Marlborough, and with more than 100 wineries responsible for 69% of New Zealand’s total wine production as well as great restaurants, boutique producers and amazing seafood, it’s easy to see why.

No trip to Marlborough would be complete without visiting at least one of the 43 cellar doors to taste award winning wines and the beautiful Marlborough Sounds is the perfect setting to enjoy a glass of sauvignon blanc whether it be on a cruise, or in a secluded bay after walking the Queen Charlotte Track. Just as wine tastes better in a glass, it tastes better in Marlborough.

Marlborough is New Zealand’s largest wine growing region, specialising in sauvignon blanc. Its long-ripening season also produces superb aromatics, elegant chardonnays, fine methode traditionelle and rich pinot noir, some in limited quantities available exclusively at cellar doors. The region is home to approximately 135 wineries from well-known international brands to small boutique family producers. For those who prefer beer Marlborough also has a number of boutique breweries.

Allan Scott Family Winemakers is a family owned and operatedvineyard and winery group founded in 1990, although the family’s history in winegrowing began in 1973 when Allan came to Marlborough to plant some of the first grapes in what is now one of the world’s premier winegrowing regions. The winery is now firmly nestled amongst the prime vineyards in Jackson’s Road surrounded by mature trees and manicured gardens where the Cellar Door shop and Twelve Trees

Restaurant complete the facilities available. Allan Scott Wines has developed its ownreputation as a Marlborough icon and a sound name for outstanding wines and fine food. MediaAngleBoth Herzog wine and the restaurant have received high accolades in New Zealand and internationally. The Wines have been included in French wine critic Michel Bettane’s book “The World’s Greatest Wines”. Malcolm Gluck from the UK Guardian wrote in his latest book “Brave New World” - “Hans Herzog makes wines. Indeed the sensitive taster is quickly made aware as s/he tastes that no-one is making better wine in the whole of New Zealand than Hans Herzog.” The history of Therese and Hans Herzog’s cosy Rimu cottage goes back many decades. It was the original building on the estate and was their private residence before they came to live fulltime in this wonderful region.

11.1 Destination Queenstown

11.0 Queenstown / Central Otago

The ultimate in taste sensations, the Queenstown region is foodie heaven. There are more than 150 restaurants and eateries to choose from in Queenstown and Arrowtown alone. Many nationalities, cultures and influences cook up truly tantalising menu options that are well spiced with diversity. Choose from international level fine dining, Pacific influenced, traditional pub, winery kitchen, stylish café bar, Asian, designer burgers, Italian, Japanese, Indian, Chinese, Turkish, Vietnamese, Mexican and more. Restaurants are everywhere, some poked into the tiniest corners and it’s easy to find lake or mountain-view establishments. Arrowtown is home to some of New Zealand’s most awarded restaurants with highly prized fare that make it worth the short drive. Several winery restaurants dotted between Lake Hayes and the far end of Gibbston Valley are also not to be missed. Coffee and tea culture flourishes in downtown and lakeside areas. Many cafés have courtyard space ideal for people-watching as you sup and in spring and summer the streets buzz with al fresco diners basking in late sunsets. In winter, cosy-up with hearty fare in front of roaring fireplaces. As the world’s southernmost wine-producing region, it’s also one of its most glowingly awarded. Skilled and innovative wine producers put the shaly soils and perfect wine growing conditions to good use, adding their own flair to create a rich family of varietals including Pinot Noir, Rieslings, Pinot Gris, Chardonnays and celebratory bubbles.

11.4 Tourism Central Otago

From the harshest of climates comes the finest of produce. Set amongst stunning alpine scenery 200-450 metres above sea level at 45 degrees south, Central Otago vineyards thrive on short, hot growing seasons, cold nights, and soils ranging from windblown sands to heavy silts.

Nurturing a fledgling yet rapidly growing wine industry, Central Otago is already recognised for producing some of the world’s best Pinot Noir and other fine wines of unique vibrancy, purity, flavour and colour.

Take the Cromwell and Bannockburn Wine Trail along the spec-tacular Kawarau Gorge and Lake Dunstan to where most of the region’s vineyards grow. Follow the Clyde and Alexandra Wine Trail to vineyards nestled among rugged schist rock and historic gold landmarks. Held within Clyde’s historic precinct each year on Easter Sunday, the Clyde Wine and Food Harvest Festival celebrates the best of what the Alexandra area offers in wine and food.

Central Tastes are stronger, cleaner, reflecting the most extreme environment in New Zealand; acting as a crucible that ensures that the quality is exceptional.

The region has long had a reputation as being the fruit bowl of the south, particularly Cromwell and Roxburgh. These places are famed for their orchards and road-side stalls of delicious, sun-ripened apricots, nectarines, cherries, plums, pears, apples and peaches. Each year in December the New Zealand Cherry Spitting Championships are held in Cromwell to celebrate the first stonefruit of the season.

Central Otago’s specialist food industry is small in scale, but makes up for it by producing the highest quality product. The best olive oil, saffron, wine, preserves, sauces, chutneys, honey and more - you will find it right here. Visit the picturesque, historic precinct of Old Cromwell Town to experience the Cromwell Farmers Market. This seasonal market generally runs from October to February.

Unique combinations of tastes heighten and highlight the products of Central found nowhere else. Thyme, cherries, walnuts and other distinctive Central flavours!

Experience A World of Difference in Central Otago - relax in luxury and boutique accommodation, indulge in excellent wines and great food and let the rejuvenation process begin!
