Hike – Tongariro Alpine Crossing Acknowledged as one of the fi nest one-day walks in the world, hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in the company of a local guide. Rust red craters, black deserts and cobalt blue and jade green lakes make these landscapes amongst the most colourful in New Zealand.

Kiwi watch – in the wild! Stewart Island New Zealand’s hidden gem, Stewart Island, is home to the brown kiwi and is the only place in New Zealand where these timid nocturnal birds can be reliably seen in the wild. Getting Around New ZealandHow you choose to travel around New Zealand is a question of both preference and time. An excellent network of roads makes either driving or coach-travel the most popular options and are complemented by effi cient air, ferry and rail services.

Self-driveThe main advantage of having your own vehicle is the freedom to travel as you please and at your own pace. This is especially true if you hire a motorhome, when quite literally the whole country becomes your potential lodging. In a land where every bend in the road seems to bring another amazing view to savour, such independence is truly appealing for couples, friends and families alike.

InterIslander ferryOperating daily between Wellington and Picton, the Interislander Ferry crossing takes 3 hours with 3 to 5 sailings daily. There is no need to take your car on the ferry. You simply leave it at the ferry depot, check-in your baggage and pick up another vehicle on arrival. However, for motorhome hire, you will need to take your vehicle on the ferry. Pre-booking is essential during peak times.

Domestic fl ightsFlying is a great way to travel between the main centres in New Zealand if you are pressed for time or should you wish to focus on specifi c regions. Air New Zealand is the largest domestic operator offering economy class fl ights to 26 destinations throughout the country. In addition, a number of domestic fl ight routes are offered by Qantas and both airlines also operate Trans Tasman services between New Zealand and Australia.

Rail journeysTrain journeys are both leisurely and scenic and can add a delightful variant to your self-drive itinerary. On the North Island, The Overlander is a glorious journey through the interior, travelling between Auckland and the capital Wellington. On the South Island, The Coastal Pacific runs through Marlborough wine country from Picton to Christchurch via Blenheim and Kaikoura and ties in with the InterIslander ferry service.

NorthlandTwin Coasts - Maritime - Historical RootsStretching 350km north from Auckland, Northland is New Zealand’s only sub-tropical region and with its above average sunshine record and glorious beaches, it is popular with locals as well as visitors. Winters are mild and citrus fruits and even bananas grow among its gentle hills and valleys.

To the east, on the sheltered Pacifi c coast, is the renowned Bay of Islands where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840, in which the Maori chieftains sealed their future alongside that of the ‘pakeha’, the whites. Today the Treaty House, Maori Meeting House and 100ft long war canoe compete for visitor attention with the natural attractions. Gorgeous white sand beaches dissolve into a turquoise sea studded with many islands that can be readily explored on a scenic cruise, dolphin swimming excursion or big game fi shing trip.

The small town of Paihia is a favourite place to stay, being centrally located and within

a short distance of Waitangi Reserve, while historic Russell is smaller and more peaceful. Thrashed by the Tasman Sea, the windswept west coast couldn’t be more different, its long beaches backed by dunes and forests of ancient kauri trees.

The oceans meet at New Zealand’s northernmost accessible point, Cape Reinga, a volcanic outcrop at the end of Ninety Mile Beach. Specially equipped coaches drive along this superb stretch of sand and surf, following the trail of the ‘spirits’. Legend has it that the departing spirits of the Maori head north along this route to leap off the headland into the sea.

The Pacifi c Coast region includes the verdant Coromandel, famed for its scarlet-blooming pohutukawa trees, glorious white sand beaches, secret coves, and luxuriant rainforest. Just south of this sits the varied landscapes of the Thermal Explorer region, renowned for its Maori culture and geothermal Rotorua.

New Zealand’s Coromandel Peninsula is renowned for its beautiful coastal scenery, wonderful beaches and its rich tradition of gold mining. The scenic Bay of Plenty, with its golden beaches and kiwi and citrus orchards, extends over 200km in a great arc from the Coromandel to the East Cape. Along the coast is the lively port of Tauranga and Whakatane, the base for trips to the nature reserve of Whale Island and volcanic White Island. Here hissing steam and sulphurous gas clouds escape from a desolate crater.

Long and picturesque coastal roads lead to the country’s most

easterly city, Gisborne, which is the fi rst in the world to see the dawn of a new day. Further south, Hawke’s Bay is the second largest wine-producing region. It is here that New Zealand’s most unusual city, Napier, was rebuilt in Art Deco style following a devastating earthquake in 1931.

In the geographic heart of New Zealand’s North Island, the immensely varied landscapes of this acclaimed region encompass fertile farmlands, snow-capped volcanoes, steaming geothermal fi elds and crystal clear trout fi lled lakes. The main highlight of the region, Rotorua, has become one

of the most visited places in the country famous for mud pools, spouting geysers, redwood forests and scenic trails for walking and cycling. The fertile Waikato is home to world-class gardens, the Hobbiton Movie Set and the glowworm caves of Waitomo.

Lake Taupo is another of the region’s hot spots and is peppered with geothermal areas as well as the mighty Huka Falls. From the lofty Southern Alps to the broad Canterbury Plains, the peaceful spa resort of Hanmer Springs to the bustle of Christchurch, this stunning region is one of great diversity. On the other side of the island, the West Coast is wild and dramatic with wave-pounded coastlines, lush temperate rainforests, mountains and accessible glaciers.

Boosted by riches from the 1861 gold rush, Dunedin grew from an isolated outpost to a bastion of European culture, whose architecture could be equally at home in Edinburgh. With New Zealand’s oldest university and a thriving youth culture and rock music scene, abundant pubs and cafes, this is the place for lively nightlife as well.

North and South of the city, the rugged coast is peppered with unusual geological formations, sheltered sandy bays and sheer cliffs, including those of the Catlins, a vast forest and coastal reserve, popular with outdoor enthusiasts. Not surprisingly, the region’s

wildlife is a big draw, with onshore colonies of penguins and albatross on the scenic Otago Peninsula, which also boasts dazzling rhododendron gardens at Glenfalloch. For rail enthusiasts, the 77km Taieri Gorge Railway ranks among the world’s great rail journeys.

Invercargill, New Zealand’s southernmost city also has a marked Scottish character and its streets echo the names of highland rivers. Ferries depart from the nearby port of Bluff for the hour-long crossing to Stewart Island, most of which now comprises Rakiura National Park.

Sandy beaches and lush rainforest form the landscape, providing the natural habitat of the kiwi making it one of the best places to observe this bird in the wild.

Day 9 Tongariro-Wellington (332 km) Wellington, the vibrant capital city, has a superb location on a sheltered bay and is easy to explore on foot.

Day 1 arrive Auckland Transfer to your hotel in the city for an overnight stay.

Day 2 Auckland-Bay of Islands (236km) Collect your car and drive to the beautiful Bay of Islands, in Northland.

Day 3 Bay of Islands-Coromandel (386km) Today head south to the coastal town of Whangamata, an ideal base for exploring the Coromandel Peninsula.

Day 4 Coromandel-Rotorua (146km) Follow the coast road to the lively port of Tauranga before heading inland to Rotorua, New Zealand’s premier geothermal area and a centre for Maori culture. This evening attend a traditional Maori feast ‘hangi’ and concert (optional, own expense).

Day 5 Rotorua-Napier (225km) Enjoy a morning at leisure before heading further south to Lake Taupo and then on to Napier.

On arrival in Picton, collect a second rental vehicle and drive the scenic road to sunny Nelson, famed for its arts and crafts.

Day 8 Nelson-Kaikoura (247km) Depart Nelson today and make your way to Kaikoura and experience eco-tourism at its best. Kaikoura’s strength is its diversity of marine mammals and bird-life so accessible to its shores, a truly unique area to New Zealand.

Day 9 Kaikoura Spend a day at leisure.

Day 10 Kaikoura-Lake Tekapo (400km) Drive to Lake Tekapo famed for its amazing turquoise blue lake and for having the clearest, darkest and most spectacular night sky in New Zealand.

Day 2 Auckland-Hokianga Harbour/Omapere (290km) Today pick up your rental vehicle and head north via Muriwai Beach and Matakohe.

Day 3 Omapere-Bay of Islands (215km) Make your way to historic Russell via Opua and the car ferry.

Day 4 Bay of Islands A free day to explore the bay and its attractions - the Hole in the Rock, swimming with dolphins or a visit to Waitangi and its Treaty House.

Day 5 Bay of Islands-Auckland (250km) Drive south on the east coast road, taking advantage of your 4x4 vehicle to explore some of the lovely coves and beaches en route.

Day 9 Te Urewera-Napier (320km) Today’s route traverses the heart of Te Urewera National Park. From the coast it is a short drive to Napier, renowned for its magnifi cent art deco architecture.

Day 10 Napier-Tongariro (190km) Drive the historic Gentle Annie Road and the Desert Road where you are almost in sight of Mt. Ruapehu, a splendid snow-capped volcano and the highest peak on the North Island.

Day 11 Tongariro-Whanganui (315km) Take the Old Post Road, which follows the scenic valley of the Whanganui River. Continue to Wellington, New Zealand’s capital, a cultured city with lively cafes and pubs.

Day 12 Wellington-Picton-Nelson Lakes (190km) Catch the early ferry across the Cook Strait and then Queen Charlotte Drive for some stunning views of the Sound. Head inland to St. Arnaud, in the rugged Nelson Lakes National Park.

Day 13 St Arnaud-Hanmer Springs (250km) Take the Maruia Saddle Road, a splendid 4x4 route which winds among sparkling streams and rainforest and on to Hanmer Springs, famous for its thermal pools.

Day 14 Hanmer Springs-Kaikoura (135km) enjoy a whale watching trip in Kaikoura or swim with seals or dusky dolphins.

Day 15 Kaikoura-Christchurch-Mt Hutt (275km) Cross the Canterbury Plains to New Zealand’s garden city, Christchurch, situated at the foot of the Southern Alps.

Day 16 Mt Hutt-Lake Tekapo-Kurow (235km) Leaving the Canterbury Plains, you’ll reach turquoise-coloured Lake Tekapo. Take an optional scenic fl ight to the glaciers or Mt Cook before continuing the drive into Central Otago, where you stay overnight in an historic hotel.

Day 17 Kurow-Queenstown (350km) This region of the South Island staged a great gold rush in the 19th century and people fl ocked here from all over the world. Drive via Clyde and Naseby to Queenstown, famed for its stunning location overlooking Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables Range.

Day 18 Queenstown Perhaps try out one of the many activities on offer in New Zealand’s ‘Adventure Capital’ – rafting, jet boating, or take a quiet cruise or gondola or

day trip to scenic Milford Sound either by car or on a scenic fl ight.

Day 19 Queenstown-Wanaka-Franz Josef (360km) Take the road across the majestic Crown Range to reach Wanaka. Then head over the Haast Pass to Franz Josef Glacier for your overnight stay

Day 20 Franz Josef-Greymouth (160km) The west coast offers a combination of rainforest, mountains, glaciers and sea. Hike to Fox or Franz Josef Glacier, take a helicopter sightseeing fl ight or stroll around Lake Matheson.

Day 21 Greymouth-Christchurch/Canterbury region (260km) Optional drive north to the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki, before heading over Arthur’s Pass.
