Air Purifier is a device which cleans the polluted air and is capable of effectively removing bacteria, viruses and particulate matter present in the air. Air Purifiers are
different from air cleaners in their application, size, cost and area of purification. There are mainly four types of air purifying technologies used in air purifiers and
these are described below.
High-Efficiency Particulate Arrestance (HEPA): Air purifier integrated with HEPA filters comprises a stack of fibers that eliminate allergens and other airborne
particles of 0.3 micrometers, with an efficiency of 99.97%.
Electrostatic Precipitator: Air purifier removes contaminants by electrostatic discharge produced by alternately charged plates arranged in its filters.
Activated Carbon Filter: These air purifiers are made up of absorbent filters, which are capable of absorbing pollutants, trapping impurities inside and releasing
pollutant free air to consumers.
Ion & Ozone Generator: It contains an ionizer that generates high electric field by ions. The positive and negative ions attract other charged particles in the polluted
air and release fresh air into the environment.

Industry Brief
According to TechSci Research report, “New Zealand Air Purifiers Market By Filter Type (Prefilter + HEPA + Activated Carbon, HEPA + Activated Carbon,
HEPA, and Other Air Purifiers), By Price Segment (Low, Medium, High), By Sales Channel (General Trade and Modern Trade), By Region, Competition,
Forecast & Opportunities, 2030F”, the New Zealand Air Purifiers market is forecast to grow at a rate of over 7.42% to reach USD14.48 million by 2030F. The
market growth is stimulated by various factors such as growing urbanization and increasing disposable income of consumers which results in rising purchasing
power of the consumer. The demand for air purifiers in the projected period is likely to register good growth owing to an increase in pollution level and the need
for fresh air to breathe. Air purifiers are meant to remove indoor air pollutants such as pollens, allergens, cooking fumes, dust mites, pet dander, tobacco smoke,
and so on. They are quite beneficial for those who suffer from allergies, have asthma or other respiratory problems, or homes with infants and small children.
Even though New Zealand has superior air quality in comparison to many other nations, in recent times, there has been an increasing instance of respiratory
diseases and approximately 300 cases of tuberculosis (TB) are diagnosed each year in the country. Moreover, growing exposure to airborne pollutants and
irritants is anticipated to increase the risk of airborne diseases. This has led to an increasing focus on health and wellbeing among the people in the country. As
air purifiers have the capacity to clean the air and keep users away from these diseases, the demand for air purifiers across New Zealand is expected to register
growth during the forecast period.
Airborne diseases such as the common cold and flu spread through tiny pathogens floating around in the air. When one family member catches the flu, it is not
uncommon for the rest of the family to get sick as well. This happens because everyone is breathing the same air that is infected with bacteria and viruses. Air
purifiers with HEPA filters capture these bacteria and viruses. When you remove the cause of airborne diseases, you safeguard yourself and your family from
them. If you live with elderly people, children, or anyone with a weakened immune system, air purifiers are a must in those houses. Indoor air pollution can affect
your cardiac, respiratory, and even neurological systems. Chemicals and gases from common household products can accumulate in your lungs. The airborne
particles are so small that they penetrate the blood-brain barrier, impacting your brain and cognitive functions. A good air purifier traps even the fine particles
providing you with better air quality.
Anticipated improvement in the country’s GDP in the coming years is expected to boost the personal disposable income of consumers, thereby shifting their
focus towards preventive healthcare from traditional curative healthcare. This is anticipated to augur well for the New Zealand air purifiers market during the
forecast period.
The New Zealand air purifiers market is segmented into filter type, price segment, sales channel, region and company. In terms of filter type, the market is
segregated into Prefilter + HEPA + Activated Carbon, HEPA + Activated Carbon, HEPA, and other air purifiers. Out of these, the Prefilter + HEPA + Activated
Carbon registered a market share of around 47% in 2020 because of the rise in airborne diseases and health concerns, whereas the HEPA filter type is the
fastest-growing air purifiers among others. In terms of the price segment, the New Zealand market is segmented into low, medium, and high. Among which the
medium price air purifiers is more purchased by the consumers across the country due to cost efficiency as most of the consumers prefer to get good air
purifiers at a medium price range. Furthermore ‘low’ price range air purifiers registered the fastest growth with a market share of approximately 29% in 2020. In
terms of sales channel, the market is segmented into modern trade, and general trade, wherein the modern trade has dominated the market with a majority
share of around 77% in 2020. In terms of regional analysis, the New Zealand air purifiers market is divided into North Island & South Island. Among which, the
North Island dominates the air purifiers market across the country, due to high per capita income and higher spending of people on lifestyle.
“The rising health concern is stimulating the growth of the air purifiers market across the country. Air Purifier removes harmful radon, eliminates hazardous
asbestos particles. Companies are coming up with the best technologies to stay competitive in the market.” said Mr. Karan Chechi, Research Director with
TechSci Research, a research based global management consulting firm.
