PROGRAM DESCRIPTION & OBJECTIVES The objective of this meeting is to present a comprehensive review of current trends in orthopaedic surgery, emphasizing the orthopaedic surgical subspecialties of shoulder surgery, sports medicine, pediatrics, hand surgery and trauma. The program includes lectures and case presentations. Current residents in training are required to participate and will present cases to the alumni audience.

Alan DeForest Smith Lecturer Thomas S. Thornhill, MD, was born in Charleston, West Virginia. He completed his undergraduate studies at Williams College, where he earned Highest Honors in Biology. He received his Doctor of Medicine Degree from Cornell University Medical College in 1970.
He is currently a John B. and Buckminster Brown Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Harvard Medical School and has been the Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Brigham and Women’s Hospital since 1996. Dr. Thornhill performs over 250 major surgical procedures annually ranging from arthroscopic procedures in early arthritis to major joint revision procedures for patients with joint replacements that have failed.
Dr Thornhill has published and lectured extensively on total knee arthroplasty, total hip arthroplasty, total shoulder arthroplasty and total elbow arthroplasty. He is the Director of Operation Walk Boston, bringing total joint arthroplasty to the Dominican Republic.
Frank E. Stinchfield Lecturer Oheneba Boachie-Adjei, MD, was born in Kumasi, Ghana, on December 16, 1950. He immigrated to the United States in 1972 and completed undergraduate studies at Brooklyn College, where he received a Bachelor of Science (summa cum laude) in 1976. He received his Doctor of Medicine Degree from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1980. He was Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Minnesota (1987-1990); Clinical Assistant Professor, University of Southern California (1990-1994) and Assistant Clinical Professor, University of California College of Medicine, Irvine (1993-1994). His clinical appointments included the position of Associate Medical Director at the Southern California Complex Spine and Scoliosis Center in Whittier (1990-1994). Since July of 1994, he has been Associate Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery
at Weill Cornell Medical College and Chief of the Scoliosis Service and Associate Attending Orthopaedic Surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Boachie-Adjei has published and lectured extensively on spine surgery, with special emphasis on surgery to correct spine deformity. He is an inventor who holds several patents for devices used in spine surgery. He has started a foundation, F.O.C.O.S. (Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine) to provide orthopaedic medical care to underserved populations in West Africa and other third world nations.

Distinguished Alumnus Award Robert Jon Neviaser, MD was born in Washington, DC, the son of a prominent orthopaedic surgeon. After graduating from Phillips Academy in Andover, MA, he received his A.B. from Princeton University and his MD from the Jefferson Medical College. He spent two years as an Intern and Assistant Resident in Surgery at the New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical Center, followed by three years as an Assistant Resident and Resident/Junior Annie C. Kane Fellow in Orthopaedic Surgery at the New York Orthopaedic Hospital of the Columbia University Medical Center. After two years of military service, he did a one year fellowship in Surgery of the Hand at the Orthopaedic Hospital of Los Angeles. This was followed by one year at the University of Connecticut as Assistant Professor of Surgery (Orthopaedics) and Chair of the Section of Orthopaedic Surgery.
He then moved to the George Washington University School of Medicine as an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, eventually being promoted to the rank of Professor five years later. In 1987, he was appointed Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the George Washington University, his current position.
Dr. Neviaser is the author of over 120 publications, has given over 250 presentations worldwide, and has been the Visiting Professor or Presidential Guest Lecturer at nearly 60 institutions and societies, nationally and internationally. He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, as well as numerous orthopaedic organizations. He is a Founding Member and Past President of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons and is a Past President of the Western Trauma Association.
Dr. Neviaser was an Associate Editor of the Journal of Hand Surgery for five years. He was also a North American Editor (five years) and the Editor-in-Chief (12 years) of the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, now holding the title of Editor Emeritus. He has been the recipient of numerous honors, including the GWU Orthopaedic Chief Residents Teaching Award six times over the past 25 years. Twenty-five percent of all residents trained under his Chairmanship are in full time academic positions. His two brothers (one also an NYOH alumnus) and one of his four children are also orthopaedic surgeons.

FOREWORD To Our Fellow Alumni: We have a long leadership heritage which is a source of great pride for us all, and we share many fond memories of our years of training. Many alumni have brought honor to New York Orthopaedic Hospital through impressive accomplishments in medical centers throughout the United States and Canada. These include deanships, chairmanships, faculty appointments, and leadership positions in national organizations and local communities. The practice and teaching of orthopaedic surgery continue to evolve. We believe the basic strengths and skills learned during our rigorous and challenging clinical training will stand us in good stead as we face the dynamics of change. The Alan DeForest Smith Memorial Lectures The Alan DeForest Smith Memorial Lecture was established in honor of an orthopaedic surgeon who dedicated his career to the achievement of excellence in medical education and patient care. Dr. Smith directed the New York Orthopaedic Hospital from 1940 to 1956, a time of critical transition for the Hospital. It was during these years that NYOH joined the family of hospitals known as Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, a collaboration which has proved most fruitful. Dr. Frank E. Stinchfield, Dr. Smith’s successor, initiated the tradition whereby the Alan DeForest Smith Memorial Lecture is given at the New York Orthopaedic Hospital Alumni meetings by a visiting professor prominent in the field of orthopaedic surgery.

Frank E. Stinchfield Memorial Lecture Chairman and Director of the New York Orthopaedic Hospital from 1956 to 1976, Dr. Frank E. Stinchfield guided NYOH into the future of orthopaedic surgery. He reformed residency education, established a program in orthopaedic research, introduced subspecialty clinics to improve patient care, and both led and inspired the development and implementation of innovative surgical techniques. To honor and commemorate the forty-eight years of distinguished service and leadership given by this visionary surgeon, researcher, administrator and educator, the Alumni in 1993 voted to establish the Frank E. Stinchfield Memorial Lecture. Beginning in 1995, the lecture is to be given at each biennial meeting of the NYOH Alumni Association by a visiting professor who is prominent in the field of orthopaedic surgery. 1995 David P. NYOH Alumni Association By-Laws ARTICLE I Name The name of this Association shall be The New York Orthopaedic Hospital Alumni Association. ARTICLE II Purpose The purpose of this Association shall be the advancement of the practice of orthopaedic surgery and the
promotion of fellowship and educational activities among alumni. ARTICLE III Membership a. Active Members: all persons who have served on the house staff as residents or fellows in the
New York Orthopaedic Hospital shall be eligible for membership. b. Associate Members: all persons who have served on the attending staff and/or the New York
Orthopaedic Hospital shall be eligible as associate members of the association. After five years, associate members will automatically become active members with all privileges including voting and eligibility to hold office.
c. Honorary (special) Membership: active members of the association may propose candidates for honorary membership in the association. Written application accompanied by three letters of support and curriculum vitae shall be presented to the Executive Committee of the Alumni Association and presented for election to membership at the biennial meeting. Honorary members will not be voting members or eligible for office.
ARTICLE IV Officers Officers of the Association shall be President, President-Elect, Secretary/Treasurer. ARTICLE V Election of Officers Officers of the Association shall be elected by ballot at the biennial business meeting and a majority vote
of those present shall constitute the election. Nomination of Officers Nomination of officers shall be made by the nominating committee appointed by the Executive
Committee of NYOH. Other nominations may be made from the floor at the biennial business meeting. Election of Officers Officers of the Association shall be elected by ballot at the biennial business meeting and a majority vote
of those present shall constitute the election. Term of Office The Officers shall hold office for a term of four years or until the successor is appointed. President-Elect
will serve two years as President-Elect and two years as President. The Secretary/Treasurer shall be a member of the faculty. Officers will be installed at the close of the biennial business meeting at which they have been elected. Officer may not serve more than two consecutive terms.

NYOH Alumni Association By-Laws (continued) ARTICLE VI Duties of Officers President: The President shall preside at all meetings of the association. He/she will appoint committees
and shall be ex officio of all committees. President-Elect: The President-Elect, in the absence of the President, shall assume the duties of the
President. The President-Elect shall serve as program chairman for the biennial meeting following the election. The President-Elect, with the consultation of the Executive Committee, will choose the social chairperson for the biennial meeting.
Secretary/Treasurer: The Secretary/Treasurer shall keep a record of all transactions of the association, have charge of all property of the organization, and send out all notifications to members. He/she shall collect and receive all dues and donations, have charge of all monies belonging to the association, and make all necessary disbursements. He/she shall make a full report, in writing, at the biennial meeting.
ARTICLE VII Historian: A historian will be appointed and serve at the pleasure of the Executive Committee. The historian will be
responsible to preserve and recount a history of the association and the hospital. ARTICLE VIII Expulsion: A member may be expelled from the association by a majority vote of those present at the biennial
meeting after he/she has been provided the opportunity to defend himself. ARTICLE IX Amendment(s) to the Constitution and By-Laws Amendment(s) to the constitution and By-Laws may be proposed at any biennial meeting and be adopted
by 3/4 vote of members present. By-Laws Section One: Stated meetings should be held at least biennially at whatever time is decided by the
Executive Committee. Section Two: Annual membership dues shall be enough to cover the functions and expenses of the
association. The amount to be determined by the Executive Committee. Members retired from the active practice of orthopaedic surgery are dues exempt with all rights and privileges of the organization. New graduates are dues exempt for two years with all rights and privileges of the organization.
Section Three: The By-Laws may be suspended at any business meeting by a 2/3 vote. Section Four: Executive Committee - all business of the association shall be transacted by the committee
composed of the officers of the association and the past president. Section Five: Committees -committees, as deemed necessary, will be appointed by the Executive
