1 Golden Gazette New York Guernsey Breeders’ Spring 2017 Members Attend Annual Meeting & Awards Luncheon Over 75 Guernsey members from throughout New York, traveled to Saratoga Springs to celebrate this past years’ achievements, recognize individuals who have gone above and beyond for the Guernsey breed and select those who will serve the Guernsey association throughout the next couple of years. The day begin with the Board of Directors Meeting taking place. The meeting focused on the upcoming National Guernsey Convention, however, time was also spent discussing the New York Spring Carousel Sale and Show and discussion on the selection of the new American Guernsey Association CEO. Following the Board of Directors Meeting, the New York Guernsey Annual Meeting was led by Association President, Wayne Foote. The meeting kicked off with the Junior Association report given by Caylie Axtell. Axtell reported that youth raised $4,208 during fundraising efforts at the New York State Fair with expenses totaling $3,482. Axtell also named the new slate of youth officers which includes Caylie Axtell, President; Daniel Ripley, Vice-President; Kaitlyn Grant, Secretary; Benjamin Axtell, Treasurer; and Grace Harrigan, Promotional Chair. Following the youth information, Natalie Gilbert delivered the treasurer’s report stating that the association has $96,453.90 as of February 28. David Coon then spoke on behalf of the American Guernsey Association, stating that the new CEO, Doug Granitz will be a great asset, as he possesses a strong business background and has already been on the road meeting breeders. After David Coon delivered the American Guernsey Association report, Eric Craig updated members about the New York Spring Carousel Sale. In his report, Craig informed attendees that long-time sale auctioneer David Rama, would not be doing the sale this year. Fame Daughter Garners Champion Honors at Spring Show JudgeMikeBerry,Oregon,placedover50headofGuernseycattleduringtheSpringCarouselGuernseyShowonSaturday,April8.ToppingtheshowwasKnappsHillpointMBFameTiaownedbyP.MoreyMillerandHillpointPartners.Tia,aFamedaughter

fromthefamousKnappsAceTamera,wontheFive-Year-Old class before claiming both Senior andGrand Champion honors. Reserve Senior andReserve Grand Champion was awarded to thesecondplaceFive-Year-Old,GR-CraigMoorCameroStarlet-ET. Owned by Chascidy LaQuay, Starlet issired by Ripley Farms Lexus Camero and was the2016NewYorkStateFairGrandChampion.

Earlier in the day, Knapps Kringle Tappy-ET wasselectedastheJuniorChampioninboththeJuniorandOpenShows.Tappy,ownedbyLandreeFraley,wasthewinningWinterYearlingHeiferandissiredbyKringle.ReserveChampionhonorswenttoTooliteMintsVivianownedbyRichardTooley.Vivian,aMintdaughter,wasthewinningFallCalf.

IntheJuniorShow,GR-CraigMoorCameroStarlet-ET,thewinningFive-Year-OldownedbyChascidyLaQuay,wasthenamedtheGrandChampion.EmilyFisher’swinningSeniorTwo-Year-Old,Topline JudgmentVadalia,took home Reserve Grand Championhonors. Knapps Kringle Tappy-ET, ownedby Landree Fraley, was selected as theJuniorChampionwithToplineRexPenny,the winning Fall Calf owned by EmilyFisher, being named Reserve JuniorChampion.

Tamera Daughter Tops Spring Carousel Guernsey Sale Withover110peoplewatchingviaCowBuyerandapackedhousearoundthesalering,biddersfromalloverwerepresenttowatch17liveanimalsand1embryolotsellattheNewYorkSpringSaleonApril7.Toppingthesaleat$3,800wasafullsistertoKnappsRegisTambourine.Lot#1,KnappsRegis Trotter-ETV was consigned by Daniel Thurston and followed in her family’sfootsteps inshowcasingpowerandstrength.Trotter remainedincentralNewYorkafterbeingpurchasedbySherylandGlenTaylor.

Wee Acres FarmsteadMacaerna-ETVwas the secondhighest seller with the gavelbeing tapped at $3,200. During the luncheon, Adyson Miller ofChateaugay was named the Calf ScholarshipRecipient.Miller, a FFAmember and 4-Her hadpreviously leased aGuernsey from the Tromblyfamily.CaylieAxtellofRipleyFarmswasnamedthe 2017 Achievement AwardWinner and thencrowned as the New York Guernsey Princess.Axtellwill spend thenext year representing theNewYorkGuernseyAssociationatvariousevents,showsandsales.Throughouttheluncheon,severalherdsandcowswere recognized for outstanding production as

wellastype.RipleyFarmsRiveraCTwix,ownedbyElizabethRipley,tooktophonorsinTotalProductionintheJuniorDivision.Twix’srecordof31,172poundsofmilkmadeher an easy winner in the category. Monument View Verdict Raspberry was thewinning junioranimal,ownedbyHunterDuval, inTotalSolids. Raspberry took thefirst-placeawardwithherproductionof1890poundsoffatand957poundsofprotein.

RipleyFarmsBlazeYogi,ownedbyRipleyFarms,wastheleaderinLivingLifetimeTotalSolids.Yogi’stotalsolidsequaled17,434pounds,with9397poundsoffatand8037pounds of protein. Ripley Farms, Moravia, was also named the leader in herdproductionforfarmsover100Guernseycows.Ripley’sherdaveraged19,881poundsofmilk,1129poundsoffatand745poundsofprotein.MonumentViewFarmwasthewinningherd for25or less cowswithaherd average of 21,997 pounds of milk1129fatand745protein.CoonBrothersFarmLLC,Amenia,wasawardedwiththeMost Improved Dam-Daughter Award.Smithfield Daunte Merigold, Very Good85, and her dam Smithfield AtlanticMolly, Fair 76,were thewinningpairofthe award based on the mostimprovementoftypeandproduction.
