Rural Northwest Health Aged Care Nurse a Finalist in National Awards
Warracknabeal enrolled nurse Katie Ramsdale is one of five
finalists in the Individual Distinction category of the 2014 HESTA
Aged Care Awards to be held at Melbourne’s Hilton Hotel next
month and was recognised for her work in a unique new role
and for her fundraising efforts.
Katie is pioneering a unique role as a cognitive rehabilitative
therapist, working both in the Yarriambiack Lodge aged care
facility and in the broader community. She has worked for many
years in aged care and has had many successes including helping
to raise over $40,000 for Wattle Crescent.
If Katie were to win a share of $30,000 she said she would donate the money towards her dream of opening a
memory support shop in Warracknabeal’s CBD where community members living with dementia and Yarriambiack
Lodge residents could work together daily.
We are wishing Katie all the best in the Awards!

Project: Speak Your Mind
With one in five Australians experiencing mental health issues each year, it's vital
that personal stories of survival and resilience are told. Let's share these stories,
get talking and show that we’re all in this together. Tell us what it was like when
you were in the middle of a mental health challenge. How did you cope? Who
and what helped you through? Was help easy or hard to get? How do you deal
with the stigma? How are you now? And how do you maintain a mentally healthy life?
We also want to hear from the families, carers and loved ones of those affected. How did you get through? Who did
you talk to?
We hope that by sharing stories written by people that have experienced mental illness, we can increase awareness,
reduce stigma and promote hope, which is what the Speak Your Mind project aims to achieve. The project will form
part of an ABC campaign for Mental Health Awareness Week in October called ‘Mental As..’.

Arthritis and Osteoporosis Victoria (A&OV) has received funding from the Ageing and Aged Care Branch of the Department of Health (DH) to train staff or volunteers in Government-funded, community-based organisations to become leaders in conducting local Tai Chi for Arthritis (TCA) classes for older people.
TCA is a modified version of Tai Chi which is designed to provide a gentle form of mind-body exercise to promote general health and wellbeing. TCA is evidence-based and has been shown to be effective in falls prevention. The TCA leader training program enables participants to learn how to safely and effectively conduct TCA classes.
Who can do the TCA leader training? The leader training in each region will be provided free to approximately 20-25 suitable participants who work in/with Government-funded, community-based organisations and have the prior endorsement of their organisation to then establish and deliver TCA classes to their older clients and/or older persons in the future. Apart from being physically able to undertake the TCA leader training, other personal pre-requisites for people suitable to undertake the TCA leader training are as follow:
People without a formal qualification in health or exercise who have current and comprehensive experience in conducting exercise classes under the supervision of a relevant health or exercise professional
Health professionals (such as occupational therapists, exercise physiologists, physiotherapists, nurses, allied health assistants, diversional therapists)
Fitness instructors
People who are familiar with Tai Chi and have personal experience of practising Tai Chi
In many organisational settings, it is also recommended that people who lead physical activity classes should have current first aid and CPR accreditation.
When will the training take place? The leader training sessions will be delivered around the state with a session being run in Ballarat on Saturday 25
and Sunday 26 October.
For more information please email [email protected] or phone Georgia Sackville (Project Officer-Health
Promotion) on 8531 8022.
Creating a Vision for Integrated Care – Supporting the work of ICDM
Monday 15 September 09.00 am – 1.00 pm - Room 1.10 50 Lonsdale Street Melbourne
Vision is critical when pursuing fundamental change in health care delivery. So is the willingness to question
assumptions, upset the status quo, learn and use tools from other industries, set goals, delegate, motivate, inspire,
and hold everyone from the Board of Directors to front-line workers accountable. All this, while also empowering
people to try new things and make mistakes. Talk about challenges! Leaders from a range of health care
organisations say great things can be achieved if the organisation has fostered a culture that values continuous
improvement and quality. And if everyone, at all levels, has a way to be involved. (2012 Institute for Healthcare
Improvement)
Key note speakers Dr Rachael Addicott, Senior Research Fellow, The King's Fund, United Kingdom, and Prof Chad
Boult, Healthcare consultant, Teacher, Researcher and Physician board-certified in Family Medicine and Geriatrics;
Past Director, Improving Healthcare Systems program, Patient-Centred Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), USA.
This conference brings together representatives from State & Local government departments, volunteers, potential volunteers, ethno-specific, interfaith and multicultural organisations, service providers, researchers, academics and students.
A diverse range of speakers will share their experience, research and insights into the benefits, challenges and the social impact of volunteering within ethnic communities.
The conference will include an address from Andrew Elsbury, Liberal MP for the Western Metropolitan Region.
Free for all volunteers and potential volunteers. Organisations: $90. Includes morning/afternoon tea and light lunch.

AESTmyAlly A mentoring program for allied health professionals (AHPs) and allied health assistants (AHAs) working in the public health sector across rural and regional Victoria. It has been built and is coordinated by FBG with funding from the Department of Health. AHPs and AHAs can register as mentors or mentees, and will be partnered with a suitable participant to form the mentoring relationship. Key features of the program: • A comprehensive website with program information and mentoring resources • 24/7 access to e-learning modules • Tailored matching process • A dedicated support team at FBG Thinking about being a mentor? Anyone who has an interest in developing people can be a mentor. You don’t have to have any special skill. We need people who can tell their stories and encourage developing professionals to see the enormous value in developing non-technical skills to advance their careers in allied health. Thinking about being a mentee? Mentoring is a unique opportunity to receive personalised support to deal with the host of challenges in delivering allied health services in regional Victoria. Other development offerings may not give you that opportunity to focus purely on helping you solve your unique challenges. The development opportunity is about building non-technical skills which are arguably more critical to a successful career in allied health than building technical skills. Working across disciplines is the way of the future. A mentor in another discipline can help you fast track your capability to work across disciplines. Applications open 1 August. In the meantime if you’d like more information, please visit
www.fbggroup.com.au/myally or contact Paul Clifford or Carly Newman on 03 9600 0067.

Chronic Disease Blights Good Report Card
Lifestyle-related chronic diseases are rife in Australia despite our longer life expectancy, lower death rates for cancer and a world-class health system, a new report shows. While Australia has been given top marks in many areas of health, there is room for improvement in cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and mental health which blight an otherwise pleasing report card, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.
