INTRODUCTION

This document details the changes on tax returns for the 2018 tax season. Many of the changes will relate to all the tax return types however this is mostly about ITR12s.

We do not deal with the changes in any particular order.

On May 25, 2018 we ran a webinar where Sini, Accfin’s Technical Director gave a presentation of the tracking and control aspects of an ITR12 tax return.

These changes have come about because of the wonderful interaction that we have with our clients and the suggestions by our staff.

NEW ICONS

You will notice two new icons above which you will find at the bottom right of the screen. The bell is an indicator of all outstanding sticky notes or tasks that have been allocated to the user that has logged in. There is an option setting which will display the outstanding tasks if you set it. Choose the function key indicated by the top arrow and then select general settings.

Click Show Reminders on start-up as indicated by the second arrow. Just below that there is another indicator which will show when the sticky note or task must generate a sticky note when the task is changed. By clicking this option the system will allow you to track who has made the change to the sticky note, audit trail if you like.

When the software loads it will show all the outstanding tasks for the user who loads Sky. It is then just a question of clicking on the note that you wish to work on. All outstanding notes where the deadline has past will be shown by an orange date. If the note is black there is still time to attend to the note. You can click on the including completed notes to show all notes and any reminders. By clicking on the new icon it’s a simple matter to make a reminder for yourself, and this will not be stored against a particular client but will be shown to you when you log in. If a sticky note is for a particular client it will be shown on the client records as well.

The first icon will allow you to make a new sticky note in the form of a personal reminder and the icon next to that will allow you to duplicate a personal reminder or sticky note and then change the words. Sticky notes will prevent you having to keep any form of paper notes.

Each record has a client code for reference.

There is a new icon next to the reminder(bell) icon at the bottom. This will open the new dashboard screen as shown below.

There are three boxes at the top of the screen which indicate the numbers for the following; awaiting documents this is where SARS is waiting for documents to be uploaded returns not assessed this is returns not assessedcorrespondence this is where correspondence has arrived

if you click on any of the squares it will show you a list of the clients that require to be processed or the fact that you’ve received correspondence for. Returns not assessed need to be investigated.

The TAX REPORT PACK for ITR12 now prints everything as one report in the tax return i.e all the sheets that have been activated, i.e. all the schedules etc. All page numbers will now appear on the bottom of each page.

To print selected pages choose Report Pack and select the pages you want to print.

and you change the value in the nett column as indicated below it will automatically create an adjustment for you to cater for the new balance on the fixed asset account.

This will allow you to make the changes for the New Year quickly.

Switching back to the detail view the screen will look like this

All you have to do now is enter a remark if you want to.

IT12 DATA ASSESSMENT ENTRY PDF button on assessment entry screen will show red if no Assessment PDF linked to it.

TAX RETURN ERRORS The validation messages are NOW more descriptive and should be easier to follow.

IRP5 INPUT The number of records will show between navigation arrows as well as on the tab (this applies to all income screens with multiple records allowed) as illustrated in the example below. When downloading from SARS, we will not create the line item if the amount against the source code is zero. When submitting a tax return, we will not submit any line items with a zero amount.

RENTAL INCOME You will be able to roll various income screens from the previous year. The screen below will show the situation when there is rental income last year and we have just created the tax return. Orange means there was data last year. Click new and the following screen displays.

Tick the properties that you wish to open.

Click Roll Over and then the rollover icon in the system will commence the rental screen based on the previous year. All amounts will still need to be entered.

The system will not allow any negative amounts (it will take out the negative sign and leave the positive amount in)

The source code will default to the profit code for rental and will change accordingly if it becomes a loss. You are now unable to select the code any more.

The validation has improved and you will receive a message on save if any of the following fields are missing, the screen will nevertheless be saved.

The system will not allow you to enter partnership percentage until partnership checkbox is ticked.

BUSINESS INCOME The business income screen will work in a very similar way to the rental income screen. The system will show a screen on NEW allowing you to select which records to roll over from previous year.

The system will not allow any negative amounts (it will take out the negative sign and leave the amount in) The system will display a message on save if any of the following fields are missing but will still save the record.

o Unique number o Description o All Other description fields o Partnership percentage

INCOME AND DEDUCTION TABS The system will mark tabs as green when the sections are filled in and orange when there is something last year and nothing this year as indicated below.

The number field on additional info screen is now right justified.

We have changed the look of the screen to be more consistent with rest of the screens.

Resized the input fields to be more consistent with the value for them.

When the taxpayer is marked as married in community of property and you enter trust distributions it will create a return for the spouse if it can find the taxpayer on the system.

The trust tax number is now validated.

MEDICAL The number of contributions has been limited to the amount SARS allows (12)

The number of disability records have been limited to the amount SARS allows (20)

The tabs turn to green when the section is filled in.

Changed the taxable income to show 2 decimals and as a rand value

TRAVEL ALLOWANCE Validated closing KM’s to not be smaller than opening.

DONATIONS Validated the NPO number.

SECTION 10 DEDUCTIONS Added validations as to what is required on the ITR12 form.

VCC Added validation for VCC number.

ASSETS AND LIABILITIES The Assets and Liabilities is mandatory to submit to SARS in the following instances;-

o Any foreign income

o Business and rental income o Farming income o Director of a company

Changed the submission of the return to only send it if it is needed. On the tax calculation screen, it will indicate that the Assets and Liabilities section will be sent to SARS if the above criteria are met

The capital recon has a tick to indicate that the assets and liabilities have been checked and verified. It will not submit if not ticked. See the green arrow below.

There is now a validation to not allow the same asset code twice.

TASKING AND TRACKING USING STATUS We have taken status usage to a different level. When various processes are implemented the status changes automatically i.e. when you create a new year or when you file. Making use of the status filter is very powerful. When you click on the found set indicator as shown in the window below the status view will display indicating the situation with each client as indicated below.

Note the graph on the bottom, each bar is in the order of the statuses listed.

CORRESPONDANCE WINDOW You can individually download assessments and correspondence from the e-filing tab.

And use the function key to download in bulk.

By clicking the flag the screen below shows only those communications from SARS.

The correspondence tab will look as follows. Click on the view button to open a document.

When correspondence downloads a sticky note is opened as is shown below indicating that the user needs to react.

IT14 GENERAL We have reviewed existing validation message to be as descriptive as possible. Many of the changes are the same as the for ITR12’s.
